Homebrew

I'm establishing a separate thread for rulings and homebrew. For rules related discussion, refer to the 'Ruling Discussion' thread. This is the thread where I formalize any rules we come up with.

Ruling: Nonmagical and Magical Fire

Nonmagical and Magical Fire

Rule 1) Fire that spreads from magical fire is considered nonmagical, barring a few exceptions. If the spell's description states that the spreading fire possesses some innate property that cannot mundane it is considered magical. Examples; Green-Flame Blade, Fire Storm.

Rule 2) Magical fire cannot be extinguished through nonmagical means, unless those nonmagical means are extreme or the spell's description states otherwise. The fire that is created by the initial cast of Fireball or Firebolt can exist underwater, and a bonfire made by Conjure Bonfire can exist underwater. The fire that spreads cannot exist underwater, meaning fire-based spells effectively cannot spread fire if the environment is unable to sustain nonmagical fire.

It is worth keeping in mind that any creature that is fully submerged in water takes half damage from fire (PHB p. 198). The fire from Searing Smite and any other spells that specify they can be extinguished by nonmagical means are exempt from this rule.

Magic Item Crafting

This is a modified version of the rules outlined in Xanathar's. The main changes consist of a drastically reduced time to craft and looser restrictions on crafting materials and Tool Proficiencies.

To craft a Magic Item, a character has to spend time, gold, and the appropriate raw materials. Additionally, they need a Formula to work from. Specific Magical Components are required for Magic Items of the Uncommon rarity or rarer. Typically such components are exotic materials harvested from monsters or unusual environments.

RarityHoursCost
Common 1650 gp
Uncommon 32200 gp
Rare 1602,000 gp
Very Rare 40020,000 gp

(Halve the listed price and creation time for any consumable items).

If the crafter
has Proficiency in Arcana: A Formula is not required to craft Magic Items of the Common or Uncommon Rarity.
does not need to craft the item from scratch, has Proficiency with the appropriate Tool Kit, receives help from a character with Proficiency with the Tool Kit, or receives help from a character with Proficiency in Arcana: Halve the time requirement (the time requirement may only be halved once).

Complications: For every item you craft, roll 1d20. On a 1, the DM rolls on the 'Crafting Complications' table (listed in Xanathar's Guide to Everything, page 129).

Additional Rules for Copying Spells

These rules supplement the rules on Learning Spells of 1st Level of Higher.

Copying a Spell Without a Source. A Wizard Spell can be written in the book without the need to reference a Spellbook or Spell Scroll. The Spell can only be added if it is of a level you are able to prepare. For each level of the Spell, the process takes 2 hours and costs 50 gp. When you write a Spell without a reference, you must succeed on an Intelligence (Arcana) check with a DC equal to 10 + the Spell's Level made with Disadvantage. If the check succeeds, the Spell is successfully written.

Facsimileing Spells from a Spellbook for Later Reference.
A Spell in a Spellbook can be copied exactly as the Spell appears in the original Spellbook. For each level of the Spell, the process takes 1 hour. Facsimileing a Spell this way does not add the Spell to your Spellbook and you will be unable to cast it until you copy the Spell into your Spellbook (see below).

Copying Spells from a Facsimile. A Wizard Spell from a Facsimile can be copied into your Spell Book following the normal rules for copying Spells into your Spellbook. Due to potential discrepancies between the Carbon Copy and the Spellbook, an Intelligence (Arcana) check with a DC equal to 10 + the Spell's Level is required to successfully copy the Spell.
