Re: Chapter 3: The Tundra and Beyond
"Nicely done with that lock, by the way. That's a handy skill to have."
Mallory took the compliment with a smile and indulgent curtsy. "When one works in shipping, one learns to be handy with both lock picks and crowbars. It's quite bothersome how many imports come bolted shut and having lost their keys in transit." A fair notion, though the fact that Mallory had her picks stowed away inside her left boot perhaps could've been a mite on the suspicious side. Though she did also indeed have a crowbar strapped to her satchel too. A noble unaccustomed to the traveling life, but at least one suitably economic about it.
"My vote would be to continue on to Caer Konig on the morrow."
Again, Mallory was in agreement with Rhydd. "Indeed. Though it does make for a tantalizing bit of mystery, the lost mercenaries' lives take priority. Best we spend as little time as necessary getting supplies in Caer Konig and set into the wilds with all due haste."
On the matter of their purchases, the young noble smiled and shuffled over her pack to sort out a few different items. The utilitarian tools - rope, block and tackle, climber's gear and tinder kit - were all apparent in their use. With the group heading out to delve into a Netherese ruin, having plenty of gear suited to scaling broken paths and icy ledges was vital. Less obvious were the novelties she'd acquired. Scarves and books and doll clothes, a chess board, a fountain pen made of carved emerald that looked better suited to a royal desk?
"Had a week to spend burying myself in that shop, I'd have done so gladly. Such wonders at a glance! I found some lovely gifts to bring back for Dannika and Moyrah when we return. And our little Chwinga friend as well." she grinned as she held up the tiny doll clothes between her gloved fingers proudly. Given the nature spirit's fondness for man-made items and their own roughly hewn coats, she expected they'd be delighted. "I bought a Dragon Chess set as well, in case any of you fancy a game? I can't play against Astre: he cheats."
"Mmrrrm." the Tressym remarked from where he laid in Mallory's lap in a lazy sprawl.
"Don't you give me that. My being able to predict the future is no help in chess." she retorted, then primly ignored her cohort's eye roll as she gathered up the other trinkets to show around. "As for the rest, I spotted some magical bits and bobs. This pen writes without ink in an illusory script; handy for covert messages. The die will roll whatever number one wills them to. And the needle is unbendable - not necessarily impervious to all harm, mind you, but it's quite an interesting thing to have for a mere copper piece." While she seemed pleased as punch with her finds, it would be quite easy for a more cynical eye to label such items as a total waste of gold. Mallory gave Khulekani a smile and gestured to the clockwork she'd bought for herself. "That piece of yours is a most curious device too, Squire. The still-beating heart of a Modron, perhaps? It's rare to find items directly linked to other Planes so readily, let alone one bound to Mechanus of all places."
