Chapter 4-B: Guardians of the North

Caer-Konig was situated on a slope which eventually led to the tall and imposing Kelvin's Cairn in the distance. Usually, a well-trodden path led to its lush base in the warm months, but now, even the cairns which were to mark the path during winter struggled to peak through the layer of snow that had continued to pile up without relief. The crest of one could only be seen intermittently. Fortunately, though cloudy, the silhouette of the solemn mountain stood there unerringly to navigate by.

The closest of the Owlbears' caves was about a four hour trek from the town. It laid on the western foot in the direction of Lonelywood, so the shortest path would be to tangent the Dwarven Valley. There wasn't much in the way of wildlife here – typically, this was a lush grassland with plenty of trees and foliage for an Owlbear to thrive in, but now the occasional naked birch only stood as a monument to the regions barrenness. The Rabbits, Hares, or Dear which used to graze these fields were not to be encountered, for those that still endured had surely retreated to what little refuge Lonelywood offered.

How about Rhydd and Stormheart both give me a Survival with Advantage? Working Together, but also independently.

Edit 9/13: Stormheart could give me a Nature instead if he so wishes.

Re: Chapter 4-B: Guardians of the North

Stormheart had made a quick stop for supplies and some meat for the owlbears. They might have hunted along the way, but worried about taking the time, mostly.

He lead the way from town, not out of arrogance, just because he had been close to where they were going recently and knew where he was going. The cold didn't bother him, like most Goliaths, but neither did the snow that much either really.

He also grew a little bit more relaxed and content as soon as they stepped outside of the town, which grew more pronounced the farther away from 'civilization', such as it was. Or maybe not relaxed, as he was alert and mindful, but...more in his element.

08:23, Today: Stormheart rolled 24 using 2d20+7, dropping the lowest dice only.  Survival (new & improved with advantage).

Re: Chapter 4-B: Guardians of the North

Righty, a visit to the general store warrants its own segment. We'll rewind the clock a tad, so those Survival rolls will be put on hold.

Caer-Konig had one, singular modest shop which imported most of what the town needed from Bryn Shander. The former-ranger, a man Rhydd knew as Atenas Swift who was many times his senior, had never had a knack for paperwork, but what was one to do when old age settled in and your knees called it quits on your behalf? He ran the shop, which he'd called the Frozenfar Expeditions the best he could, and his experience in the wilderness had him know what was quality wares. Luckily he had company in his Dwarven wife Jarthra.

It was situated a stone throw away from the town itself, for Atenas kept sled dogs. They barked as they recognized Rhydd from the small sheds they were tethered to in pairs, pulling on them until they reeled. Sled dogs were lively. One, Arker, who was the oldest and the leader of the pack, was the odd one among them – he remained still and watchful as he sat atop his allotted wooden block, tethered on his lonesome.

"Out here again?" Atenas called out to Rhydd as he emerged from his shop to meet the arrivals he'd spied from his window. "I thought we'd gotten rid of you when you fled south . . . g'day," he nodded toward Stormheart and Khulekani. Jarthra emerged behind him, slower into her outerwear. "Rhydd! What a surprise!" she beamed, as was typical of her.

Anyone who greets the dogs can give me a Perception check, alternatively Insight.

Re: Chapter 4-B: Guardians of the North

Stormheart grinned widely at Rhydd as he heard the dogs. "Dogs! I like dogs!"

It put a spring in his step and he hurried forward. He did hesitate when he saw the person emerge from the store and greet Rhydd. He slowed to a halt, glancing between - and clearly torn between - the dogs and the man as well as the emerging woman.

Finally, he gave a bow of his head to two owners. "Greetings! I am Stormheart. It is wonderful to meet you both."

He hesitated another moment, gesturing towards the dogs, "If it's okay? I'll be right back.", before then continuing on towards the dogs. He smiled widely again and got close enough for them to be able to smell him and get used to him, kneeling down and allowing them to approach him if they wished. "look at you, all so beautiful!"

14:34, Today: Stormheart rolled 15 using 1d20+7.  Perception.

"Just like a bad copper-piece," Rhydd chuckled in response to Jathra's warm greeting, "turning up just when you thought that you were well-rid of me."

"And g'day to you, as well, Atenas," he said, turning to the old ranger. "But, mind, 'fled' is such a judgmental, nasty-sounding word. I much refer 'served as a much-needed guide for some clueless Southrons'."

Turning to his companions, the archer kept speaking -- granted, 'twas a bit of an oddity for one who was generally a man of few words. "Stormheart, you now know. This other fair lass is Khulekani Kumalo, a squire in service to the Radiant Heart Axillary."

Re: Chapter 4-B: Guardians of the North

"Go on ahead," Atenas nodded Stormheart's way. "Jarthra is just about to take some of them on a ride. They'll get rather loud."

It was clear their excitement to greet a new person was compounded by the promise of exercise. Most of the Dogs eagerly approached Stormheart. The pack leader's attitude, however, was due to more than just steadfast vigilance. He was injured.1

Farwalker arrived a moment later after having stayed behind with Mallory to ensure the bodies were properly wrapped and stored. A funeral could be arranged later, as she doubted either of them would have wanted a Goliath's. For those who died among the clan, it was one of pure duty and solemn silence for those who remembered them. There was no burial – the corpse was carried away and left out somewhere for the carrions to feast upon. It was the same for the Goliaths who had the dignity to expire in life.

"I meant no ill," Atenas strode to clasp Rhydd's hand in comradery. "I would say having someone like you down there would be like shooting sparrows with ballistas . . . now what can we do you for?"

1 Stormheart's Perception check on the Dogs [15]: The old Dog had one eye shut and a myriad of scars, some new, but most of them old. When ruffling his fur, Stormheart could confirm by their size and shape they were likely from the fangs and claws of his fellow Dogs.

In reply to DM Bears (msg # 7):

Rhydd puffed out his cheeks in response to Atenas' inquiry. "Well, there seem to be problems aplenty these days, but Stormheart," here the archer turned and motioned towards the big Goliath, who had stepped over to greet the sled dogs, "tells me that you have been having some issues with Owlbears, hereabouts."

"We stopped here for some supplies before heading out into the Wilds."

Re: Chapter 4-B: Guardians of the North

"Hmm," Atenas pondered. "Jarthra mentioned something like that, but frankly I can't keep up. Running shop is taking up all of my time, even with as slow as it's been as of late. I've left the roving to Jarthra." He nodded toward his wife who was busy getting all the reins for the Dogs ready. "But supplies I can get you. What do you need?" He spoke a bit louder so Stormheart also would hear.

Some of the Dogs became disinterested in Stormheart and sat to howl. They were too numerous to all be chosen for a ride, so they had to wait in turn for Jarthra to come and select the lucky winners.

Stormheart's Animal Handling into the Dog's wounds [24!]: This was something that happened from time to time among packs of wild animals. The older Dog, which seemed healthy and capable enough, was being ganged up on either in a contest of leadership or simply for an outlet for aggression. Sled Dogs didn't always adhere to a structure one would expect to find in packs of Wolves; their 'leadership' alternated and was heavily predicated on who was the sled's frontrunner, a role which usually rotated between a select few of the Dogs.

It was complex, in other words.

Re: Chapter 4-B: Guardians of the North

Stormheart slowly changed from joyful exuberance as he petted and played with the dogs to a concerned frown. After a long moment, he turned to look at the two owners. "Pardon me, I don't mean to intrude on your...business or lives but..." He hesitated and then pushed on, "Are you aware of this dog's injuries and how they happened? It looks like they are from the other dogs ganging up on him. Most of these are older wounds and I cannot heal them at this point." He stepped back, "My apologies. I should not impose myself or my views."

He stepped towards Atenas as the dogs started to howl. "Yes, I am going to see about helping the owlbears and ensuring that they aren't a danger to others as well if possible. And the whale ferry after that if I can." He hesitated and then spoke once more, gesturing at himself. "I am afraid, however, I do not have money at this time. My money was recently...lost during a journey I was forced on. As you can see, I have but the clothes on my back and my armor really." He touched his holy symbol. "And this."

He looked down and sighed. "The only three things I would really need - anything else I can manage without and if they can't be provided I will make do looking for game along the way - would be rations, meat for the owlbears and a waterskin." Small pause. "Unless you have a shield available." He looked up. "If you do see your way to helping me, I will try to pay you back as soon as I am able. If you do not or cannot, please know that I understand and do not judge you. I know that Icewind Dale can be a harsh place enough without charity and you don't know me."

Re: Chapter 4-B: Guardians of the North

"Aye," Jarthra sighed in earnest, "Wee Arker's had a rough go of it as of late. He's become more resigned, even though he's as strong as ever. He just . . . let's it happen." She walked up to pat his head before continuing on to strap up a different dog. "We've tried preventing it, but when we're out riding watching five dogs at a time is much for one person, so there's been the occasional situation while resting. Last one two days ago, but it wasn't a bad one, thankfully. Can't leave him here, either, poor fellar. Needs his trips just as much as the rest."

Upon listening to Stormheart's request, Atenas went to the cabin. "Hold on, let me check the ol' iventory . . ." He returned later with the requested items – some jerky, some stockfish, and a bag with a larger piece of discard meat, specifically rib, frozen solid. "Rations aren't going to be enough for an Owlbear. Thankfully we're saving everything these days." On his back was slung a wooden shield of Dwarven make. A 'War-Door' as they called it. It ran the height of a typical Dwarf, but it barely reached Stormheart's hip. "Might this do? If not, I'd talk with the Town Speaker and hear what he's got in the armory. There's also a Master Smith in town now if you're looking for something more tailored, but if you've no coin I can't promise how far you'll get."

He handed Stormheart everything. "Take it. The good you do out there is payment enough for us. And let us know if there's anything else."

Khulekani bowed as Rhydd made the introductions to the towering Goliath. It seemed that Icewind Dale held a fair number of the mountainous giantfolk. Then again, the Spine of the World was not far away. Perhaps there were tribes up there that she was not aware of, that made it down from time to time.

"Forgive me, Master Stormheart, but if I might make a suggestion? Dwarvencraft items make for fine tools of war. However, based on your sheer size, might I suggest visiting a carpenter if you do not have the time to wait for a smith to craft you an appropriately sized metal shield. A heavy oak door, made to protect an inn, or other domicile, would make an excellent kite shield for you..." she suggested with a small shrug and a warm smile.

Re: Chapter 4-B: Guardians of the North

Stormheart gave a nod to Jarthra. "I understand, I suppose." He smiled at her, though there was a tinge of sadness to it. "I do not like to see any animal suffer if I can help it, but in this case...I can't. It is the nature of things."

After Atenas came back out, the Goliath made a face of someone who was feeling genuine heartfelt warmth almost to the point of being overwhelmed at the moment. It took him a moment to speak once more. "I will not forget your kindness. I am a cleric, so if either of you, or your dogs, need healing or anything I can do, do not hesitate to let me know." He smiled and waggled one finger. "And do not think I won't share my bounty with you once I...have bounty to share once more." He let out a chuckle.

He quickly packed things away but mouthed the word "war door" with amusement. He glanced at Khulekani with a thoughtful look. "That...is not a bad idea. I would not have thought of that. A door. A war door of my own!" He boomed a laugh even as he hefted the current shield, shaking it a bit, turning it this way and that. "Though...for now, this will do nicely."

He smiled still and gave a bow to the shop owners. He turned to his two companions. "Have you need of anything, or are we ready to depart?"

Rhydd smiled at Khulekani's and Stormheart's mention of a "war door". "May it serve you well," he said to the Goliath.

"I'll take a week's worth of field rations," Rhydd replied, looking from Stormheart to Atenas, and opening his coin-pouch.

"Normally, I would not bother with such tasteless victuals. A group such ourselves could hunt for our dinner, I feel certain."

"But at the moment, with the weather being so uncertain . . ."
the outdoorsman shrugged.

"I could see a blizzard blowing in, and us spending time hunkered down in a snow cave. Best to be prepared for that sort of thing, just in case."

OOC: I am the world's worst when it comes to "bean-counting" and keeping my PC's Character Sheet updated. Perhaps I was an accountant in a previous life, and spent way too much time toiling over ledger-books. :)

For example, Rhydd's Character Sheet shows that he has 23 GP and assorted silvers and coppers on hand. I'm pretty sure that he has more than that, but even if we stick with what is listed, it should be enough to buy some field rations.

"Skill alone can't make the impossible possible, but then again I find myself surprised thinking about what we managed to do out there . . ." Atenas said after giving Rhydd the requested rations, refusing any coin for it. "The Dale isn't as it used to be. Take care, be vigilant. And Rhydd, a word, if you would," he nodded for them both to take a walk away from the others.

"Have you heard from Hawk?" Meaning, of course, Eyes-of-the-Hawk. "She paid us a visit a Tenday-and-some ago, warning us of . . . things. She warned us of the Duergar close by and that they were the least of our concerns. Something called Chardalyn has driven certain folk mad, not just the Duergar, but the Regheds too. And Halvdan1. She asked of us something we could not do. Well, something I couldn't do. Jarthra wasn't willing, bless her heart." He paused for a moment, drawing in the frigid air. "That's a lie. I could do it, knees be damned. But I am afraid, Rhydd. I am a coward and I am afraid. I've started to tremble," he held out a gloved hand, shoving significant tremors. "I am haunted by nightmares. The sun hasn't risen for two years and it's only a matter of time before something truly, truly terrible happens . . ."

1 A Verbeeg – a type of Giant-kin referred to as Human Behemoths due to their resemblance to Humans – who was indicted into Eyes-of-the-Hawk's band of rangers. Stormheart would have interacted with him at some point too. A stoic, immensely intelligent roamer who had none of the destructive qualities typical of the Frost Giants who once ruled the region.

Rhydd shook his head. "Nay," he replied, "I have neither seen nor heard of Hawk recently. Although our group has been on the move, and it could be that we have not crossed paths as of late."

Truth be told, it surprised the archer to see Atenas so . . . jittery. It seemed that between Hawk's warnings, the gloomy, blustery weather, and all the various signs that pointed to Trouble on the horizon . . . well, 'twas easy to see how a man could get his nose out of joint.

~But, still . . . it bodes ill that heretofore steady men are starting to crack under the pressure, to . . . jump at shadows.~

"Not to worry," he said, "if push comes to shove, you'll be just as stalwart as e'er you were. You'll see." Rhydd hoped that he was right.

He cleared his throat and asked of his erstwhile brother-in-arms, "What is this thing that Hawk asked of you?"

Atenas hesitated as he stopped and put his trembling hands back into the pockets of his coat. The slopes of Caer-Konig were brilliant this afternoon, sparkling in the starlight. It was a resplendent beauty, though a cursed one. The howls of the dogs, whom Jarthra had mostly rounded up and fastened to the sled, rang in the distance. "She wanted help tracking down Halvdan, primarily," he eventually said, sighing. "He was the best of us and the things she said he'd done . . ." Atenas swallowed as a lump swelled in his throat. "I dare not even speak them."

"Hawk is overwhelmed. It looked like she hadn't rested for months," he continued. "We are all overwhelmed, frankly. However, if you find it in yourself, I'd go and seek her. It might take some searching – she's good at covering her tracks – but if anyone can find her, it'll be you."

"I admit, having lived here all my life, I do not notice the cold that much." He leaned in to stage whisper, "being a goliath doesn't hurt, either." He winked at her and leaned away again.

The smile faded. "Though...even I have noticed that it is getting colder than is usual." He shook his head. "It is part of what is causing issues among the animals." He let out a small sigh but seemed to perk back up, or pretend, once more. "But hopefully we can help out at least some, maybe in bigger ways soon as well."

He clenched one fist. "I feel we shall do great things together and then celebrate mightily!"

Re: Chapter 4-B: Guardians of the North

Back out in the wilderness . . .

A trek like this in times like these was taxing. The snow was deep and snowshoes awkward, so one could wonder if skiing would have been the better option. But nevertheless, it was made and the distance laid. Though the sun had already set, the day would conclude long before the return trip could be started. Unless Rhydd, Khulekani, Farwalker, and Stormheart wanted to go to significant lengths to exert themselves, camp would have to be arranged.

About halfway around the foot of Kelvin’s Cairn some tracks were encountered.

Rhydd's Survival [14]: Of all the places in Icewind Dale, Kelvin's Cairn was among the most dangerous. It was a steep, rugged mountain where many a creature nestled in its crevaces and cliffsides. Harpies, Peryton, Orcs, and Giants used to lurk in its heights, though who remained Rhydd wasn't sure of. Halvdan had a lair here, once, though it was just one of many.

Stormheart's Survival [
24]: The tracks belonged to some hoofed animals, likely Goats. It wouldn't have been noteworthy, but noting the distance between each print, it was likely they were in flight. The snow had yet to crystallize around them, so they couldn't have been more than hours old.

Re: Chapter 4-B: Guardians of the North

Stormheart looked to be well in his element after they left 'civilization' behind and headed in to the wilderness. He seemed...happy, or at the very least content, by the looks of it. He lead the way out and onward until he slowed and stopped. He crouched down and began looking at the ground, moving forward slowly.

"Hmmmmm." He glanced back at the others for a moment. "Goats...maybe. In a hurry. Fleeing from something. And...not that long ago."

He glanced both ways. "Perhaps we should investigate before we set up camp? It would not do to be taken unawares but by some predator chasing them...or worse."

In reply to Stormheart (msg # 32):

Rhydd once again marveled at how comfortable he felt in the frigid, bone-chilling weather -- no doubt it was due to the marvelous boots that Mallory had magicked for him, he felt certain. ~For a Southron, she had adopted to life here in the far North quite well,~ he decided.

His thoughts had turned to picking a likely spot for their night-camp when Stormheart noticed the tracks in the snow. After studying the signs for a moment, the archer nodded. "Goats or deer do seem likely. And it does seem as if they were moving at speed . . . fleeing, most like."

Rhydd straightened up and brushed the snow from the knees of his cold-weather trousers. "I agree that having a look around, mayhap following the tracks for a bit, is a wise precaution."

The outdoorsman glanced around at the ground again, then turned his gaze upwards. "Perhaps I missed the other tracks, but I do not see any sign of whatever was pursuing these fleeing animals. Could it have been flying, I wonder?"

Following the tracks led the group half-a-mile until they rounded rocky outcrop where the chase had reached a climax. The snow showed signs of a larger scuffle and bloodshed. One Mountain Goat laid dead atop a larger stone. When investigated, it was clear its heart had been ripped from its chest1, and that this was its only fatal injury.

Stormheart lead the way to follow the tracks. He suddenly stopped and frowned as he saw the dead goat. "Ahhh, my friend. What a shame. To kill not for food, but only to take the heart? Shameful."

He looked around slowly as he stepped towards it, scanning for any tracks or signs of what might have happened to further make up his mind. Or any pieces of the missing organ or a trail of blood.

Then he knelt next to the goat and quietly uttered a prayer, barely making any sound as he did so, the words only for the goat's spirit and his god.

Some variance in the skills that are used for checks is healthy for the narrative. Stormheart's Investigation stands since it is applicable, the two other rolls are stricken (Survival on the grounds it was rolled prior, Nature on the grounds Rhydd covers it).

Stormheart's Investigation of the scene [12]: Counting the tracks up to now, five Goats were chased. Here, one was dead, and after walking the perimeter, Stormheart comes to the conclusion three had scattered.

Rhydd's Nature for further insights into the scene [16]: This was most likely the work of Perytons, magical creatures the cross between Giant Eagles and demonic-looking, fang-toothed Stags. They tend to rip the heart from paralyzed targets, and it is said a Doe is not fertile until she has eaten a fresh heart from a Humanoid. Highly territorial and vicious, if one laired in the mountain it was wise to steer clear entirely.

There was little in the way of shelter nearby. A few rocks and the occasional lone tree was all that offered refuge, unless one wished to climb further up Kelvin's Cairn in hopes of overhanging cliffs or even the uninhabited cave.

Although it was cloudy, the air did not forebode snowfall.

The way I see it you have two options if you wish to make camp right away; do so out in the open, or head further up the side of Kelvin's Cairn. Perhaps you are able to conceive of additional options?

Re: Chapter 4-B: Guardians of the North

A bit further and up the foot of Kelvin's Cairn was the Daledrop, the northern entrance to the Dwarven Valley. It was a natural switchback, and a strategic chokepoint the Dwarves used to fend off marauding Orcs or Reghedmen. Whether or not the sentries allowed in guests for the night was a toss-up, but Stormheart's recent stay indicated they were currently accommodating.

The closest and most minimal of shelters was Bruenor's Climb, a reconstructed, fifteen foot high stone spire which offered a commanding view of the Valley, the Towns, and the tundra to all sides. While it didn't house, it was an excellent windbreak.

And then there was Halvdan's former lair, a bit further up the mountain's south face than the Daledrop. It was spacious and comfortable, once. What had become of it Rhydd didn't know.

Alright, here's something I should have done waaay earlier; create a map! Keep in mind you haven't been traveling for too long. A couple of hours, tops. The terrain is very difficult, though, for everyone except for Rhydd, and that only gets worse the farther up the mountain you go. Eventually one would have to use climbing gear.

As a reminder, it's somewhere between 7 and 8 PM currently.

Let's knock out the traveling times too, since we have a map now:
Bruenor's Climb -> 30 minutes.
Daledrop -> 1 hour.
Halvdan's Lair -> 2 hours (you'll have to start up the steeper parts of the mountain).
Owlbear Cave -> 2-3 hours.

Edit: Increased the time to the Owlbear cave from 2 hours to 2-3 hours. I also put the current time to somewhere between 7 and 8 PM, up from just 7, as the original estimate was from before you spent some time following and investigating the Goat tracks.

Stormheart pondered and discussed with Rhydd and Khulekani. They all seemed to agree that something not too far away but with a measure of shelter would be a good idea. So he began to lead them to Daledrop, which was a bit farther than Bruenor's Climb, but seemed like it might be a little bit better, though...time would tell.

And he didn't want to be out and about too late if it could be helped.

Seeing as not only wasn't she a native to these frozen lands, but was not an experienced frontier survivalist, she trusted those with her in order to lead them to proper shelter. While she had many fine qualities, at least a few that humility would allow her to admit too, they were more concerned with matters of faith, martial prowess, and equestrianism. And so, trying to keep Zula warm with her own body, the Athkatlan followed behind Stormheart and Rhydd without complaint.

Re: Chapter 4-B: Guardians of the North

The keen eye could spy Bruenor's Climb as the expedition passed it by, looming over yonder. It was far from an imposing structure, but given its height and situation, it made a significant landmark.

The Daledrop was not much further. Only up a steeper hill, and Stormheart and Rhydd could glean the entrance. One wouldn't be remiss to forgo it, for a keen eye was needed here too, as its mouth was sunken and roofed below the earth so it bore no visible connection to the deep valley which split the Dale. But once one had rounded the corner and viewed it from above, the Dwarven entrance greeted onlookers in all its splendor. Hewn from the rock were two statues, standing like steadfast columns – one of Dumathoin, patron of the Shield Dwarves and their deity of mining, and the other of Gorm Gulthyn, their god of vigilance. At the southern entrance stood Berronar Truesilver, goddess of hearth and home, and Moradin himself. Just past the statues at either location were heavy stone doors, elaborately engraved with their characteristic intersecting lines.

Rhydd and Stormheart knew this wasn't all for show. In the summers and springs that were this entrance looked beautiful and lush, even more so than the rest of the Dale, because the plants enjoyed the soil so steeped in blood. Here, the fiercest of Reghedmen had fallen, and countless Orcs. So while it appeared tranquil and deserted, it was anything but. Eyes peered through cracks in the stone, and crossbows and balistas were loaded at the ready – if there was one thing one could count Dwarves to be, it was watchful.

"Halt!"
a booming voice pierced the stone before any of the party could reach the door to knock it. "Stay where ye are if ye value yer lives! Name yerselves, and yer cause!"

Stormheart received a similar greeting at the southern gate. The Dwarves were wary of anyone not a Dwarf, regardless of who they were, and the policy in rough times was to allow none without due cause inside. And these were certainly rough times.

I suggest you either nominate a spokesperson, in which case you can Work Together so they can give me a Persuasion at Advantage (or whatever skill check you find appropriate), or you can do a Group check where none of you have Advantage. In the case of the latter, two of you will have to succeed.

Rhydd has probably been in the Valley before, but that doesn't mean these specific Dwarves know him.

"...the destiny of many," she concluded the motto of the Order of the Radiant Heart with easy familiarity.

While the answer came easily, Khulekani, she was surprised to hear it hear, so far north. As far as she was aware, there were no Radiant Heart chapter houses in this country, and surely this Dwarven defender was not a member, unless he had retired or forsaken his oath. Perhaps the speaker had merely heard it in his travels previously.

Whatever the case, she was curious to hear how this Dwarf knew her deeply held motto.

Re: Chapter 4-B: Guardians of the North

Shortly after Khulekani's reply the heavy stone doors rumbled open. Inside stood three Dwarves, burly and fiery, their hands resting on the pommels of their war hammers, the foremost of which crowned his beard with a near horizontal braided mustache. "Our apologies," he as he sniffed and indicated the symbol of a heart on Isiliva. "Soon figured ye could've taken the sword of somebody else!" He then stepped aside and eagerly waved the four visitors in. "Well, what're ye still standin' out there for?! Get on in wit'ye before yer bloody ears snap off! Any friend of the Radiant Heart is a friend of the Battlehammers!"

Each of the Dwarves made to grasp Khulekani in true Dwarven warrior fashion, and spared no lesser greeting for the rest, be they Human or Goliath. The first introduced himself as Daldur, the two others as Tormyl and Geirar, and all of the Hammerstones.

The roof was just barely tall enough to allow a Human to stand upright. Stormheart and Farwalker had to bow both through the door and while they were inside this entrance tunnel. Additionally, much of the cramped room was taken by a ballista capable of firing bolts large enough to skewer ten queued Orcs. It fortunately got more spacious as one moved deeper into the Valley, which was more like a giant fissure, further deepened by Dwarven excavation, than any conventional valley. And though the central walkway peered upon an open sky, it was impenetrable like few fortresses were. "Yer a long way from home, Squire," Daldur spoke as he led them through the tunnels. "What brings ye to these lands? The nice weather, perchance? Hah!" he bellowed and slapped his armored abdomen with a resonating thud.

Stormheart was glad the paladin had come along with them. He could have spoken to the dwarves, and some of them may or may not have known who he was. But Khulekani made things much easier. He smiled at the dwarves after the greeting, though he had to bend down as he entered. It was not the most comfortable for him, but he endured. "Thank you. We appreciate it."

When asked their business, he grew a bit somber. He didn't want to put the paladin on the spot for what were, essentially, things he had asked for help with. "She and Rhydd are helping me. I travel much though the whole area and many things are brewing in Icewind Dale, which I'm sure you've heard of some things that are waiting for now."

He crouched down to save his back a bit. "For now, we're going to see if we keep a couple of owlbears from being trouble for anyone, then check on the Whale Ferry Angajuk, which is having..." He glanced down and then looked back as he shook his head. "There is an issue but I don't have the details." He then looked more grim. "Ware the Tribe of the Wolf, and ware the Red Rust Ravagers. The two other sentries remained at their posts as Daldur led the way down a steep stairways within the tunnel. Corridors branched at every opportunity, for the Dwarven complex was vast indeed. Some of them ran deep underneath Kelvin's Cairn, where these Dwarves considered the real riches to lie.

"Elves?!" Daldur blurted in customary response, but it was, for those who knew the Dwarves, more fanfare than legitimate antagonism. "Nay, 'aven't seen no pointy-ears passing through, nor any Hawks or Verbeegs. Although, we did hear word a Goliath had recently stayed in the southern hold. Anyone ye know?" His armor clanged and rattled as he rounded each corner of the tunnel in turn. It proceeded through the barracks, then the storage rooms, and finally out into the open where it met with a long and meticulously tiled switchback. Bridges connected the two sides of the valley, but the buildings here out in the open were limited to just their facade. In the eastern wall were several roughly hewn buildings, connected by stairs so narrow any non-Dwarf would be anxious to climb. The most prominent was the temple carved to Berronar Truesilver, the Revered Mother looming with her silver rings as a tall and imposing cut. Several residential chambers were here too, and an inn known only as 'Ye Olde'.

Daldur stopped at the survey and turned to Khulekani. "Should ye wish to cross to Southern Hold, just say that Daldur sent ye. And beware the Halls of Black Ice."

One eyebrow rose and he did smile when asked about the Goliath. "Almost assuredly."

He glanced around as they traveled, looking at all the different bridges, buildings, and stairs. His head tilted to the side when he saw the inn. "Should we ask about rooms for the night?" He smiled slightly.

On some nights the archer would have been hard-pressed to find the coin for an inn-bought dinner and a room, but tonight this was not the case -- Rhydd had sufficient coin to pay for all of their meals and rooms, if it came to that. And he felt like some good, warm food -- and lots of it -- together with shelter from the elements would do them all some good.

He had been a little disappointed that the Dwarves had heard naught about Hawk or Halvdan -- it might have made things a little easier. But he was used to the gods paying scant mind to his wishes, so he resolved to simply keep putting one foot in front of the other, and continuing the search . . .

Rhydd smiled at Stormheart's getting a little confused about "rede" and "reed".

"I see the problem, I think," he told the Goliath. "The word I used is a very old one, I think. It is spelled diferently than the reeds we find in swamps."

Re: Chapter 4-B: Guardians of the North

At dawn – or at least what constituted dawn in Icewind Dale – and with the entire day disposable the trek to round Kelvin's Cairn seemed infinitely shorter. It remained cloudy, and light and unhurried snow muted the surroundings.

"I shall be visiting our clan," Farwalker declared as the group scaled a craggy and rocky slope of the mountain, "after this." She had considered going southward directly from the Dwarven Valley, but she had given her word that she'd accompany Stormheart to the Owlbear cave. Not that it made too great of a difference. The detour was short.

Stormheart knew the cave drew fairly close and, as expected, there weren't any signs of activity nearby. Except for one – they were pursued by an airborne beast with the head of a Stag and the body of an Eagle. It was the Peryton they had seen signs of yesterday. Rhydd was first to spot it way overhead, but he knew not how long it had been following them. Farwalker had not spotted it at all, which was uncharacteristic of her, and had to have it pointed out.

Stormheart glanced back at his kin and started to smile when something caught his eye. He didn't look up at it directly, for the moment. He tried to keep his voice casual when he replied to Farwalker in their native tongue, [Goliath] "Farwalker, there is a Peryton tracking us from above. We saw a kill of its the other day."

He then switched back to the common tongue, but kept his voice quiet, and glanced at Rhydd, "What do you think? Should we try to drive it away, lure it in, or just get to the cave? It is not far now."

Rhydd knew exactly what the "It" that Stormheart mentioned was. ~Good eye,~ he thought to himself.

~Good on him for spotting the Peryton lurking above. 'Tis easy to miss dangers lurking above one's head, as opposed to those on the same footing as oneself.~

The archer grunted and nocked an arrow. "I am inclined to press on for the cave," he replied.

"If we can get inside, that will limit the direction of yon creature's attacks -- if it decides to pursue us still, once we are under cover."

"Be ready, though. If it gleans our plan, it may decide to attack us afore we can reach the cover of the cave."

Stormheart was deliberately not looking up at it directly. He kept his sightings to its shadow or out of the corners of his eyes, that sort of thing. He didn't want to make it accelerate it's plans.

He glanced at Khulekani and gave a nod but also a shrug. "I have some spells that could be of use in either targeting the creature or keeping it at bay a bit." He then smiled widely. "Of course, if I can get a hold of it, I think I can also keep it on the ground if needs be."

For the moment, he kept leading them towards the cave and tried not to hurry.

Re: Chapter 4-B: Guardians of the North

As foreseen, the cave was close. The terrain was jagged and rough, and hid the cave mouth well. From the looks of it, it wasn't too small of a complex, slanting slightly downward from the entrance. It was difficult to glean anything from deeper in the cave by sound or sight, so it was easy to label it inactive. And in a way it was, Stormheart knew from the forest animals, with only an Owlbear snoring away.

The Peryton continued to hover above, but as the party got closer to the mountain's face, it flew past them and perched on a rock high overhead, scratching its antlers with its wings as it remained attentive.

Stormheart took note of the change in the creature - it was no longer following them. It was just perched and waiting. Likely to attack soon, he assumed.

He paused near the cave entrance. He waited for everyone else to enter first, so he could bring up the rear in case it attacked.

He spoke in a quiet voice. "Something I should probably mention beforehand. When this starts, I will change. Please do not be alarmed." He didn't elaborate further.

He got ready and waited.

"Before you go, allow me," Farwalker said, then slowly ran her hand across her closed eyes. When she opened them again, they shone dimly green, and Rhydd could sense his vision adjust. Though the group carried torches, the darkness beyond their light became less intense, the contours it hid more obvious. He could see far, farther than ever, even. "That should last one hour."

Rhydd went as quietly as he could, but in an already quiet cave where sounds bounced and echoed, assurance in his ability was not a given. Stealthy or not, there were several branching tunnels to choose from and none stood out immediately. The one to the left, however, appeared to contain something the other two did not — a statue of a kind. As he got closer, he could see it was of a Unicorn, albeit a crude one carved directly from the stone1. Scattered in the cavern were several empty and cracked pots. There was nothing else of note in this chamber.

As Rhydd pressed on and came across, down the sloped tunnels, he came across a floor of ice, and heard what he thought to be the gentle rumbles of a snoring animal. More curious, however, was the singular blot of blue mucus nearly imperceptible against the cold ground. Had he not seen well, he likely would have stepped in it.2

The wad of gunk radiated a faint steam. One could easily attribute it to a warmth of the substance, but as Rhydd leaned in he found the opposite to be true – he could feel the wad of gunk was extremely cold without even touching it. Far colder than the environment, which was rather impressive.

Mucus or not, Rhydd's investigation was coming to a close as he pressed inward just a bit further. He descended some natural steps onto a platform of solid ice, then rounded a corner to see what they had come here for, namely the Snowy Owlbear, fast asleep near a lone rock on a frozen pond. The large creature didn't seem to have noticed Rhydd.

Rhydd's Survival into the blue goop [21]: This is fresh discharge from a Frost Salamander. Massive, extremely dangerous creatures. Not native to the Prime Material plane, but they have been known to find their way to Icewind Dale the occasional winter; one such incident occured thirteen years back, when a group of mountaineers disappeared. Initially, Yetis had been attributed with the abduction, but on further investigation remains were found near a large hole going deep underground, along with the same mucus Rhydd had now nearly stepped in.

"The Peryton may not come in, which would be good, but we need to make certain that the Frost Salamander is no longer in here as well."

"That I can do," Farwalker said and took a step back from the mouth of the cave. That way she could peek the Peryton overhead. She hadn't ever fought one, but she knew of them and she knew they were quite fearsome creatures. Frost Salamanders, on the other hand, she had never heard of.

The tunnel yet to be explored led to a small chamber. Rhydd, Stormheart, Khulekani all noticed something before they entered it properly — tracks. They had been obscured nearer the entrance, probably trodden over or whisked out by reaching winds, but here the faint, undisturbed snow had preserved them as soft, rounded imprints. The one who likely made them was slouched against a rock, motionless. Beside them was a large rucksack, a pair of ice axes, some dry twigs, and a piece of flint.

Normally she might lay this person into a pose of repose, but even she knew his body was likely frozen through if he was dead. So instead she stayed on her knees and gave the deceased last rites.

"May the The Crying God have made your passing a merciful one, may The Loyal Fury have seen your duties all completed, and may The Maimed God have deemed your ending a just one. May your rest be an easy one. May your soul find its final place. We mark your passing with grief, and celebrate the life that you lived. So be it," Khulekani recited sadly.

After she finished, he murmured a quick and quiet prayer for the soul as well, just in case.

"I think their tracks are the ones I found. Unless there are more human-sized beings inside as well."

He paused. "Can Frost Salamanders travel through snow and ice, or stone?" He seemed to be musing as much as asking.

Stormheart wasn't being particularly sneaky, at first. If there was a frost salamander about that might be a threat to the owlbear, he WANTED it to know he was here. He wanted it to come after them instead of the owlbear.

He strode effortlessly down the passageway, only slowing and becoming stealthy as he neared the owlbear, not wanting to wake them or spook them in to a fight. But he wanted to make sure there was no danger to them and also to inspect them and see what might need to be done. It did little to mask the crunch of their boots against the cold surface, which Rhydd, Stormheart, and Khulekani all tried in vain to muffle. If there was a Salamander here, it was highly likely it could hear them, Rhydd and Stormheart both knew. But deeper in, it wasn't the Salamander who met them.

As they rounded the corner and peered upon the frozen pool on which the Owlbear hibernated, they found him roused. With slow movement and heavy claws it mustered itself up, its head turned to see who disturbed it. A low grumble sounded as a less than friendly greeting, accompanied by angry eyes glaring like daggers. If not downright hostile, it was most certainly irritated.

"Any ideas as to why the Owlbear was starving?" he asked, glancing between his two companions.

"Hold," Khulekani said softly, holding up a hand.

Pointing upwards, the armored woman indicated the shelf near the ceiling. There she pointed out the large spherical eggs with light blue shells, stuck together with the goo they had encountered earlier from the Salamander.

"Aside from being an Owlbear den, this seems to be a nesting ground," she mused, thinking about the best way to proceed.

Stormheart frowned and asked the owlbear, hoping to get an answer before it slept - and not its anger. "But why are you not hunting? Is something wrong?"

He hadn't made a move from the spot but he swiveled his head to look at Khulekani when she spoke. His eyes narrowed at the eggs she pointed out. He took in a deep breath and let it out slowly.

"I...think one of the two, either owlbear or eggs, would need to be moved. And moving the eggs might cause the...mother...to not be able to find them again." Not that he was looking forward to trying to convince an owlbear to move either.

Rhydd:

Animal Handling Survival would be the roll. I've gone ahead and rolled for you.

Rhydd's Animal Handling Survival into the reason for the Owlbear's lack of appetite [16]: The Owlbear was simply moderating itself after a long period of fasting. It's inclination to hibernating for an extended period of time was more concerning, and had been the reason Stormheart had brought them here. It was unlikely to starve itself to death inside the cave, but if it awoke too weak to hunt it was going to die of starvation. The batch of food made that less probable.

This was likely the utmost anyone could do for it, so if it decided to not awaken then that was it. Further deliveries could only make it dependent.

"You did well to see that -- I did not," Rhydd replied to Khulekani's pointing out the Frost Salamander's eggs and nest.

"I have heard it said that the Hells have no fury like a woman scorned. To that, I would add the example of any mother defending her young. My advice would be to leave the Frost Salamander and her eggs undisturbed."

The archer turned and smiled at Stormheart. "And now that it has a full belly, the Owlbear seemed more inclined to nap than to venture out of the cave."

Rhydd glanced back down the cavern corridor from whence the threesome had approached.

"Mayhap we can find a spot near the entrance to the cave that will shield us from the worst of the Frostmaiden's icy breath, yet which will be far enough from this chamber so as not to seem a threat to the Owlbear or any of the Frost Salamanders, either adult or young."

Stormheart frowned at the owlbear and then over at Rhydd. He reached up to rub his eyes, but did then give Rhydd a nod of agreement. He turned his back to the owlbear and moved away towards the front of the cave once more.

"I believe this is one of the owlbears I was looking for, and I cannot just leave them here if the frost salamander is likely going to come back and the heart-eater is hunting around this area as well." He let out a sigh.

"But it does not sound like the owlbear will want to leave. It does not even want to out and hunt right now." He smirked. "And moving an owlbear against its will...seems like it will present challenges."

Rhydd nodded at zstormheart's observations about the Owlbear. "I also had the impression that it has no desire to move until what it referred to as "The Melting" -- if we even have one of those this year, given the odd weather that we are having."

When Khulekani asked her questions, the archer stroked his chin-whiskers thoughtfully. "In my opinion, the Salamander will fight to the death to keep us from disturbing her nest or eggs. Thus, we need not be concerned as to whether she will follow if the eggs are moved -- or leave, if they are destroyed. In either case, I suspect that she will be dead, beforehand."

"Truth be told,"
he added after a moment, "I am not convinced that the eggs or nest need to be destroyed. Frost Salamanders are not high on my list of favorite creatures, but they are part of Nature's natural order, without being actively malicious or evil, in the fashion that some are."

The Owlbear had shut his eyes and resigned himself sleep. But when Stormheart spoke, it was with words of wisdom the creature respected, words from someone who knew the wilderness. Stormheart wasn't just any ordinary biped, after all – he was an equal. So it was that it opened one eye, peering at him pleadingly before a last protest was squelched before it was voiced. It knew it was weak, and Stormheart knew it knew. "Prrrfh," it tutted lazily, then rallied its remaining strength to rise. It lumbered over to the pile of food, taking a larger piece of stockfish in its beak, then shuffled along toward the exit. "Let us then go . . ."

He then relayed the news to his two companions before he headed straight towards the entrance and stepped outside to see if the creature was still there or if he got attacked.

There was limits to the commands the Owlbear would. He did not, in fact, stop to eat some more, but continued straight on and expected his visitors to follow.

Outside, the Peryton had indeed attacked. Farwalker stood primed with her shield and axe, her circle of aurora swirling around the perimeter, visible as Stormheart, Rhydd, Khulekani, and the Owlbear reached the mouth of the cave. The creature was, however, prone on the ground and unharmed, appearing to be unconscious. "Good timing," Farwalker spoke. "I have cast a spell on it, it will remain asleep for a minute."

"Well done," the archer said, favoring the big Goliath with a nod of his head.

"Now what?" he asked, glancing around at his companions. "I dislike attacking defenseless foes. But in this instance, I fear that given the Peryton's aggressive nature, it will soon enough be attacking us if we simply leave it lying -- a minute is not o'erlong."

About the peryton he quietly said, "no, while I take no pleasure in it, we must kill it quickly. the owlbear needs to be gotten to safety and having this gluttonous predator at our backs is an unacceptable risk."

He contemplated shifting but instead, for the moment, did not. He walked over to the creature and reached down to touch it, the other hand on his holy symbol.

Khulekani looked away as the two butchered the Peryton. She understood their reasoning. But she had never been able to fully set aside her heart, or her faith, in the face of pure pragmatism. But these were good men. She had no cause to raise her blade to stop them, when they were simply taking the direct path. But still...

"If you wish to weep for every death," Farwalker said as she stooped, jumping the axe in her hand so she held it right by the head, "you best start soon." With the sharp blade she cut a length of rope which she used to bind the Peryton's taloned feet. Then, after she had plucked a good few of the shimmering red and purple feathers that were unscathed by Stormheart's necrosis, she tied the wings down to the best of her ability. She had honestly preferred if Stormheart hadn't cast his spell. Rhydd's arrow was a cleaner method and if that wasn't enough, they had ready access to its jugular.

She hoisted the beast atop her shoulders. It was large and bulky, but so was Farwalker.

The Owlbear mostly kept beside Stormheart, but he wasn't overly wary of the Goliath's three companions. In fact, although lethargic and somewhat unstable, he was quite brazen in his pathing and oft threatened to sweep any of their feet from under them as they went down the mountainside. Stormheart was intimately familiar with the terrain and knew there would be at least a few candidates for a new den a bit further down the slope.

When they came to the first one, a smaller cavern with far less headroom, a quick inspection was enough to clear it of any threat. The only thing he found inside was the spent arrowheads of the Green Moss tribe, but the Orcs seldom had it in for Owlbears. The cave's layout, being narrow and winding, lent itself to defense, so any delve would likely be their last should the one he had in tow accept it. Which it should, for it was frankly superior in every sense except sheer volume.

Rhydd was a little wary of the Owlbear, which seemingly paid little heed to where its traveling companions might be walking. And with the footing being snowy and slick, the outdoorsman did not wish to find himself pushed off-blance by the massive creature. However, on the bright side, Stormheart's magicks seemed to be keeping the Owlbear calm, even if somewhat unstable.

The archer liked what he saw when Stormheart pointed out a new cave for them to consider. It seemed clear enough that no other creatures had taken up residence in this one, and its natural shape seemed to lend itself to defense.

"This one should do nicely, in my opinion," said Rhydd, "although it is not quite as roomy on the inside as that last cave."

Turning to Stormheart he added, with the ghost of a smile playing at the corners of his mouth, "You may need to cuddle up with your new friend. At least that will make for warm sleeping."

He didn't comment on the owlbear being slightly passive-aggressive towards his allies. It was a little amusing, so long as no one actually fell or got hurt. It wasn't nice, but Owlbears weren't really known around the world for their kindness and compassion.

He inspected the cave they found and smiled widely. He nodded and looked over at the owlbear. "I think this will do nicely, don't you?"

He stepped aside and let the owlbear take a look. Then he set a bit more food down at the entrance before he began to move away.

"Good enough," he concluded, laying down to rip off the last shreds of the stockfish he had brought along, the food Stormheart had set looking more and more appetizing as his hunger slowly returned. He had smelled a hare on his way here too, which he hoped he could happen upon. Better to hunt here than to travel to the lakeside to fish.

Okay, there's a storm coming, then! :)

Stormheart could feel it just as Rhydd could — that the winds were changing. Some snowfall, sharper than one would expect from a genuine calm, had begun to fall and refuge would have to be arranged. It was about that time, after they had safely left the Owlbear to its new abode, that Khulekani received a message in her mind from a voice she didn't recognize.

It was a male voice, high-pitched and nasally to the point of note, but it was declared the message was Mallory's. It consisted of a brief instruction to heed the original plan and head to Bryn Shander, whereupon Mallory would meet them. The spell allowed Khulekani to immediately mentally respond in an equally concise message, should she wish to inform her on their state of affairs.

Re: Chapter 4-B: Guardians of the North

Halfway between Termalaine and Bryn Shander, the storm hit for full. The wind blew like an erratic battering ram spurring on flurries of sharp, painful snow, and the visibility was reduced to nearly nothing. Neither Rhydd nor Stormheart knew if they were still following their trail, and ultimately it was decided they would have to seek shelter. The squat hills in the area provided little relief, but after a search they were able to find a small ledge they could reinforce with packed snow that at least kept the worst of the winds away. Goliaths were handy to have around in the circumstance, their skin more acclimated to the frigid onslaught and their hands more willing to toil.

The four huddled in close for a long night. Thankfully the storm abated somewhat in the deepest hours — not enough to light a fire, but it at least made it possible to sleep. Nearing dawn, Farwalker was up first, preferring to keep watch and tend to the project she had brought along. She had hoped to roast the meat of the Peryton that was still good, but that plan was out the window, so she contended herself with stripping some flesh off some bones she wanted to carve later. And unless Stormheart, Rhydd, or Khulekani wanted it, she planned to bring it along as she headed south for her tribe.
