Caer-Konig was situated on a slope which eventually led to the tall and imposing Kelvin's Cairn in the distance. Usually, a well-trodden path led to its lush base in the warm months, but now, even the cairns which were to mark the path during winter struggled to peak through the layer of snow that had continued to pile up without relief. The crest of one could only be seen intermittently. Fortunately, though cloudy, the silhouette of the solemn mountain stood there unerringly to navigate by.

The closest of the Owlbears' caves was about a four hour trek from the town. It laid on the western foot in the direction of Lonelywood, so the shortest path would be to tangent the Dwarven Valley. There wasn't much in the way of wildlife here – typically, this was a lush grassland with plenty of trees and foliage for an Owlbear to thrive in, but now the occasional naked birch only stood as a monument to the regions barrenness. The Rabbits, Hares, or Dear which used to graze these fields were not to be encountered, for those that still endured had surely retreated to what little refuge Lonelywood offered.
