OOC I

Come one, come all!

In my rush I forgot to specify a couple of things related to the game.

Posting rate: We'll go however fast we go, I think. Mostly this depends on how good the game is and how engaged everyone manages to stay. I'd say 3 times per week, but I'm not sweating it too much. I'll likely be on more frequently than that.

Starting level: I was a bit back and forth on this and it ultimately depended on whether or not there were any new players. There isn't (that I'm aware of), so I say we go full throttle and start at level 3.

"How do I determine my stats?" you might ask. An excellent question, one I should have thought of on my own. I originally wanted everyone to roll for stats, as rolling dice is fun, but I have reconsidered as it quickly imposes problems related to fairness. Instead, we are doing pointbuy. If you are unfamiliar you can find the information on page 13 in the Player's Handbook. 27 points, as described.

You can find some more information in the Character Creation thread I made earlier today.

Pretty sure there's something else I'm forgetting, but that's going to be it for now.

OOC (Out Of Character)

I'm in the process of adding everyone - not everything has been finalized, so it might be a bit longer.

I actually have a solution to that sense of fairness when it comes to rolling stats, if you are interested. Everyone rolls for stats once, then they can pick whichever stat lineup they like the most to use. This way there is never really any stat envy.

Or just point buy, that works too!

Re: OOC (Out Of Character)

DM,

I see that we are beginning at 3rd level. How are Hit Points determined past 1st level?

Thanks.

Re: OOC (Out Of Character)

All,

As is often the case here on RPoL, I see that we will be using colors for our character's spoken words and unspoken thoughts. Everything else being equal, I normally use blue for my PC's words.

But if anyone else really has their heart set on blue, I can go with green. :)

Thanks!

I think we’re just gonna go ahead with pointbuy. And if we’re not rolling for stats, we might as well not roll for hp *shrug*

I have been screwed over so many times by the thrice-damned Dice-Roller, not rolling for Attributes or Hit Points is fine with me. :)

In reply to Fighty McFighter (msg # 7):

Eh. I prefer it for the chance to have more than a fourteen for willpower. Which is why I find everyone rolling and choosing between themselves nice. Hard to get all eights when you have four to six stat lines to choose from.

But then, I wanted to play a goliath as a cleric, so I only have myself to blame.

Are you suggesting letting the players choose between their dice-rolls (for both Attributes and Hit Points after 1st level) and the Point-Buy (for Attributes) and Average + 1 + Con Bonus (for later-level Hit Points), whichever is better? I'd be fine with that, as long as we don't have to stick with the Dice-rolls, but I'm not sure that the DM has put that option on the table. :)

Re: OOC (Out Of Character)

In reply to Fighty McFighter (msg # 9):

I don’t think so? The idea is that everyone rolls for stats, then everyone picks which set they prefer. Keeps things fair. But I prefer either everyone rolling, or everyone taking point buy.

As for hitpoints, I prefer just taking average. Rolling and then taking average if you go under is just odd to me.

In any case, GM said point buy and average, so that’s that.

Re: OOC (Out Of Character)

Yeah, having point-buy as a 'fall-back' just skews the dice rolls upward, so we either fully commit to dice rolls or we do point-buy. In-betweens get too messy for me.

Edit: Alright, that's one more character. Now I just need my Druid, who has two potential applicants. In the process of getting sorted out which one as we speak.

Hello hello, your resident avenging Paladin reporting for duty. While we're discussing text colour I'd like to nab goldenrod if that's OK.

Re: OOC (Out Of Character)

Darn, you snatched goldenrod before I could call dibs.  :3

Hello all!  I'll be your local Divination Wizard/possible source of gallows humor comedic relief.  I am squishy and soft and my job is to stand waaaaaay in the back and make you all look good while you do the heavy lifting.  Apparently I'm also pulling double-duty for a lack of a party Rogue as I've got proficiency with Thieves' Tools.  I'll go ahead and snag Coral while it's still on the table.

Farwalker:

See, you say that, but I was chatting about with the DM prior to the game registration opening up and point buy being set.  I tossed out two sets of rolls and this is what I got:

Set 1
17, 12, 11, 11, 11, 11

Set 2
16, 15, 12, 9, 8, 7

Neither set are exactly helpful for completely different reasons.  One is straight-up meh across the board and the other is major dump/spike mix as to be ridiculous, while both are below being driven up by Racial ASI in any useful manner.  Rolling stats can be fun, but there's just way too much likelihood of characters being skewed in competency at the same level, and it doesn't make any sense to just let us roll a bunch of times until we're satisfied with what we get than just go with a Point Buy in the first place.

With a Point Buy, I can spread out my numbers as such:

Point Buy Set w/Racial ASI
15, 15, 13, 12, 8, 8

This way I can use my Racial ASI to push two stats up into more useful +2/+3 territory while having very specific weaknesses (STR and WIS, in my case, as suits the character).  The result of having a capable character with specific shortcomings the party can cover for is a lot better than just being an all-rounder either way.

Re: OOC (Out Of Character)

Good morning, everyone!

SO . . . is anyone going to be joining me in Night City this evening, looking for Johnny Silverhand? It's been a Looooong wait! :)

Insofar as our game is concerned, Rhydd may look like a ranger and act like a ranger, but he will be a Fighter with an archer's build. I've been curious as to how a character like that would compare to a true range when push comes to shove. :)

Re: OOC (Out Of Character)

Does the downloadable version of 2077 unlock tonight?  I thought it wasn't available until tomorrow?  Either way, I'm gonna just dive headlong into that for a good, long while.  :3  Knowing myself, I'll spend way too long in character creation alone.

The word that I have gotten is that it will be playable as of 7:00 p.m., local time (I am in the U. S. Eastern Time zone, GMT-5).

Of course, it could all be smoke and mirrors, and the game will be delayed again. :)

Re: OOC (Out Of Character)

I doubt it will be delayed so close to release.

I'll probably be playing it to some degree. I haven't followed the development too closely, but there's such high expectations surrounding it that it would be foolish to not at least give it a shot, I figure.

I enjoyed the Witcher 3, though I never really played all the way through that game.

Re: OOC (Out Of Character)

I didn't have the time to play Witcher 3, though I watched a very in-depth let's play and was quite happy with that.  Such a well-written game.  Really gives me high hopes for 2077, especially if they follow through with quality expanded content later down the line to build on the base game.

I've been annoyed at some of the early reviews for 2077 though, which is really my fault for even bothering with them.  The majority make the game sound like it's not worth bothering with or that it's some kind of buggy mess, when reading the whole thing in context reveals the reviewer is basically saying "the first 10 minutes of the game didn't make me instantly have a full-body orgasm into a state of Nirvana, so it's disappointing in that sense".  I should know better than to pay attention to click bait.

Oh, absolutely not. I was employing some gallows humor. :)

As a matter of fact, the game has already downloaded on my console -- I am just waiting for it to be playable.

Re: OOC (Out Of Character)

DM,

I know that you are quite busy with game set-up and rounding out the party. But when you have the time, can you flip the switch (mark the box, or whatever) so that we can get started on our PC's Character Sheets, along and along?

Thanks!
