The game is set in the the region of the former United States known as Appalachia. The vast ranges of mountains cover several former states and scattered settlements exist in the region which was somewhat less devastated by The Nuke than other parts of the mighty nation.

In general the area is mountainous and hilly giving way to wide valleys with huge forests and a multitude of streams and rivers (many of which even contain safe water).

Some settlements have managed to hold together and survive. They have establish agriculture, trade, some manufacturing, and relative safety in and around their controlled areas.

What the hell was Granny Helwig talking about?

The atmosphere of the Earth has been irrevocably altered by The Nuke.

Most days the sky is Blue and things are fairly normal.

When the sky is Green or Violet or other off-shades it heralds sudden dangerous weather changes that travelers need to be extremely wary of.

When the sky is Red the clouds rain Death. This takes the form of many things not the worst of which are acids and toxins that can kill a human sized animal in minutes. Some things that fall from the sky on those days are weirder and potentially even more harmful.
