[Lore] Airships

There are 3 primary means of air transportation on Thresher.

Lighter-than-Air Craft
Lifting gas is a gas that is lighter than the normal atmosphere of Thresher, and thus tends to buoy upwards.  Due to its nature it is hard to keep in one place, but specially built rubberized bags, and gnomish brass cylinders are capable of holding it.  Large enough rubberized bags can provide lift to a small wooden carriage slung below, and that is the basis for most lighter-than-air ships.  The largest ships have bags hundreds of feet long, with space for low hundreds of passengers.

Airships are propelled by gigantic sails or, for the most expensive ones, propellers driven by magic (although these are rare).


Heavier-than-Air Craft
An alternative approach to flight is a wooden bird-like structure, covered in fabric, and animated by powerful magic to give it flight.  These craft are fast, durable (compared to lighter-than-air craft), and can fly at much faster and sustained speeds than gas bag airships.  The cost for this flexibility is increased costs, making these craft reserved only for the very wealthy or in the military of large city-states.  They are seldom larger than 80 feet long.


Flying Steeds
There are a variety of flying creatures living on Thresher, the only limit on their usefulness is their ability to stay aloft for the many hours (or days or weeks) required to fly between plates, and a rider's tolerance to staying in the saddle for just as long.
