Hello everyone!
Working on my char sheet :)

Question DM, for animal companions we also roll the HD after the 1st one? I did roll, and I got a 1 & 2, so if we take those numbers, my companion will last until the end of the first combat :)

Snakebite Striker for simplicity's sake. Currently sacrificing a bit of AC for style but otherwise playing it pretty straight.

Unsure how married I want to be to the proper gentleman thing. Main things I'm tempted to break character for would be ranged weapons and armor. Parade armor I think isn't unreasonable for a gentleman not-at-war to carry.

Do we know this is a potentially violent job?
I he's expecting violence I could give him a short sword, heavy shield and heavy crossbow as sensible protection even though he can punch for more damage than the shield is capable of doing.

Stelian is a cleric of Pharasma with a particular dislike for Undead things. He was being "trained" to hunt Undead but got over zealous and jumped into the action before he was finished cooking.

He means well and brings the healing so hopefully Stelian might relieve some of the healing pressure from our beloved Bard.

*chuckles*

Originally we were a group of a Ranger, Brawler, Rogue and Bard.  Choosing to be a bard was a half-measure to give us a little bit of arcane and a little bit of healing at the same time.

Now that we have a Cleric and Warpriest we've got the healing down much better.  Add in the Brawler and Barbarian to handle fighting on different levels (also the Warpriest and Cleric).
Valus has the troublemaking down pat as our rogue.  That then allowed me to shift from Bard to Arcanist so we'd have some serious arcane strength as well rather than a half-measure.

Character Creation:
Deities.
The party will be from Greyhawk. So use the Greyhawk gods if your character is of a Divine class.

Stelian:
Stelian is a cleric of Pharasma with a particular dislike for Undead things.

Um is this right?

If you just want a deity who HATES undead, then  Pelor is the big name in Greyhawk, the Flan Deity of the Sun. "Pelor is wrathful against the forces of evil, and is especially opposed to the undead. However, Pelor urges his followers to remember that excessive attention to things of evil can blind one to the truly important things: compassion and goodness. These are what must be emphasized above all."

If you want a death deity who doesn't like undead, there's not much Chronepsis fits the bill but he's mostly a Dragon deity, not usually worshiped by humans.

Full disclosure Friedhelm though not overly religious admires Mayaheine the most. Mayaheine was a paladin of Pelor who ascended to demigoddess. But as I mentioned Pelor is possibly the most popular deity in all the Flanaess so he comes up often.

Re: OOC

Saerenrae is good but isn't one of the Greyhawk deities where we'll be starting out at, of which they have plenty to choose from.  Pelor is a good one like Friedhelm mentioned.  Wee Jas works only if the whole undead angle is nuanced with your cleric.  For Wee Jas making undead is okay as long as they are sourced lawfully and aren't raised against their will. :)

Re: OOC

Greyhawk actually has fairly deep lore if people are interested in diving into it mostly centered around the Greyhawk war ironically named after the neutral state which happened to be about at the center of the crescent shaped conflict. There's not everything under the sun like Forgotten Realms, or the Spell Punk thoughts about a world full of magic.

For instance it took me several read through to get Friedhelm's geopolitical position down though I did pick Sterich for being a politically unstable region with many petty nobles who may or may not actually be nobles.

Still we're going to be starting out Greyhawk and like Friedhelm's mentioned it has some really great lore as well that is often overlooked.  Mind of course while we are starting out Greyhawk at some point in time we'll be drawn into Ravenloft...or so went the initial advert for this game.

Re: OOC

Erm well the thing is Ravensloft is designed as an encapsulated setting, because baseline D&D is all power fantasy and big damned heroes which doesn't translate well to creating horror.

That said while many D&D setting crossover canonically with Ravensloft Greyhawk's intertwining is by far the greatest.

The end of 2e was a Greyhawk-Ravenloft-Planescape game setting called "Die Vecna Die!" which ended 2e and gave a reason why 3e everything changed, like say Vecna suddenly appearing in the Deities section of the Player's Handbook, when he wasn't a deity before. But I'm pretty sure the god of secrets would take my hand and eye if I gave away too many of his.

I just want to know how a game I remember coming out while I was in high-school is now old enough buy drinks in the US.

Re: OOC

So not sure your long term feat plans are but if you do spend the needed feat on exotic weapon proficiency (battle poi) you count as having TWF for attacks with the poi which can fake TWF. Which is fine up to at least 8th level for a pure rogue when you'd first be able to qualify for improved TWF.

There's a goblin feat called "Burn! Burn! Burn!" that works with battle poi and is reasonably impressive for dual wielding small characters. Adds 1d4 fire damage so 1d3+1d4 for small battle poi.

I figured halflings probably don't organize themselves into as byzantine heirarchy, like they'd probably stop at something close to a city, and made their rulers "kings" because they weren't beholden to anyone above them.

So, in practice they are closer to maquis or dukes in actual rank, but they get away with king/queen/prince/princess because the humans basically say "that's cute"

That's a strix example and what Keen is. I think Valus running away is what humans should do lol :) Course I'm small and can be easily carried off by the mean strix.

Course being a goblin everyone is out to get me. And Valus is a thief so....

Re: OOC

Quick question, been using stealth and got high rolls (over 30) so how did anyone noticed it was me? Also, I don't believe anyone noticed me moving about and getting under the table but I did make it noticable but not near the table. I don't believe Friedhelm would even know what/if I was doing if anyone at all. So thinking the DM would post and whatnot but with a high stealth....

Even if I roll the lowers I can get is a 23 stealth.

You walked into a fairly empty lit bar in broad daylight stealth check automatically fail when observed. Friedhelm is then warned about pickpockets immediately before you do the bump on the person he deems most likely to be an archeologist thus able to help him find money.
So yes no rolls are needed to have seen that part though he simply suspects rather than saw you take anything. Mostly because of her reaction.
Given you've been sticking to crowds and sneaking through chairs your movement would be impaired so you should be moving at half speed and then half speed for stealth which is quarter speed, a staggering 5' movement which must begin and end in cover.
Hence saw you kept spotting you infrequently lost track of you over that way but he's willing to gamble someone else's money on being able to stop you from leaving in hopes of proving you stole something before doing something about it.

Solid points!

But now, are you roleplaying or rollplaying? Because if you're going to bring up what I would call most excellent points - ones that I would say lean in your favor - you probably should drop a perception roll yourself, considering your argument leans towards rollplaying with stats as opposed to roleplaying.

Because it is kind of bad form to simply ignore Valus' rolls and presume Friedhelm will actually be able to spot them, just because.

Fried. It is bad form to ignore the other characters agency. You should await for me to adjudicate the results of Valus post. If you really needed it for you to post, that is what "waiting for" thread is for. No Godmodding will be tolerated.

In the future, remember, you control your character, I control the world. If you want to affect the world, roll or use a spell, or a special ability and I'll adjudicate. Don't assume the results if your rolls, let alone the other player's rolls. Specially not rolls that have beeb adjudicated already.

Please edit you post and don't do it again.

(Oh and if you are going to rules lawyer, at least do it to argue in the party's favor not against a fellow player)

Re: OOC

So the dispute is whether or not Friedhelm could observe Valus. My contention is there were 3 points thus far when Valus was not and could not be stealthed.

1) When he walked in the front door of the bar.
Obvious action (door opening)
No cover.
Friedhelm would have thought a goblin odd but not note worthy
2) When he bumped into the gnome.
Steal takes a standard action
Reaching a table as tall as you are plus your arm's reach to get to someone your height's belt means you're not under the table. Since she was seated closest he couldn't be behind the table. There was no cover.
Beginning or ending the turn close enough to take the standard action breaks stealth. So unless there's some mechanical reason that it wasn't it was broken.
Friedhelm is looking for people with information about the nearby ancient buried wizard. The gnome is the most interesting person for this goal. He was also just warned about pickpockets.
3) When he's sitting next to the door.
No cover
Attention attracting action nearby.

There are three facts the point to Valus being a thief.
1) He's a goblin
2) The missing coin purse of the woman he was seen standing next to.
3) He keeps disappearing (using stealth)

Not claiming Friedhelm knows exactly where Valus is, but he aught to be able to indicate the general direction he went from the door where he was last not stealth. Not sure the half-orc has any reason to believe him.

The main point of contention seems to be observing Valus next to the gnome scholar moments before she can't find her purse. Apparently we're fairly close to that table (surprising to me) but given that how did Valus have cover for that moment?

Re: OOC

Ok three points:

1) Stealth isn't just about being unseen, it is also about not being noticed. The stealth im this case is about blending in the crowd and not standing out.
2) Your character's passive perception is relatively low, unless you were explicitly looking for Valus in the crowd, he should have passed unnoticed by you

3) This is not PVP, this is you bringing a fellow player down. Would you rather be right? Or would you rather get along?

Re: OOC

1) Disguise and bluff seem more appropriate in those situations. Also see the rules for hiding behind soft cover under stealth.

2) Friedhelm was looking for someone with info on Castle Greyhawk so ancient buried wizard treasure. Is there anyone in the bar more likely to have information about this then the gnome scholar? Lady Yesgrace warned him to watch out for pickpockets. So yes right at that theft while thinking about thefts.

3) So does the not PvP apply to other players? Because Valus causing a scene stealing blocked planned action and caused danger for my character. Keen provoked a half-orc and then mistook my character for the best dressed bouncer in the world.

Counter points:
Blaming the not currently visible goblin doesn't mean the goblin is caught anymore than Keen's stunt means Friedhelm lost a fight.

If you want to retcon go back to before Keen acted and change it so the tables are far apart. For the scenario where given all the reasons Friedhelm should notice Valus to go unnoticed you can at least put some distance between. At which point Keen's action isn't possible. For that to happen at the next table over to someone he wants to talk to when that possibly happening was and practically spelled out for him creates an absurd situation for Friedhelm not to notice. At least give me like a sizeable gap and people between them if you want me to go with noticing despite focus and lack of cover

Fine, if that is the (mole)hill you want to die on, fine. You have convinced me, you can roll perception to see if you notice Valus. And you bring good points of this being a harder case, so I'll penalize Valus roll on the opposed check. So... beat 27, if you roll 28 or more, you noticed Valus.

1) After reading the OOC, Fried came off as kind of a douche nozzle. I get the "action economy" side of things, but it seemed like he was about using the rules to justify not having to play a particular response instead of just roll (literally) with it.

I am an Arcanist at the DM's suggestion from another game.

2) Valus, yes. EDI or Caprica Six. My face claim, Tricia Helfer, did the voice acting for EDI in Mass Effect 2 & 3 as well as played the role of Cylon Caprica Six in Battlestar Galactica. My jest was, who is my personality going to be closest to, EDI or Six?

I let the DM handle it. So let is not talk about it for bring it up will cause undo hardships. I want to have fun and roleplay. Not rollplay. I view it as 'its not combat, doesn't effect you, ect' It seems he had it out for me without any reason. Its the past, leave it there and have a blast with current events :)

How did I magically bump into you when I followed at least one other in and made a point to note you and that you were being spoken to?

If you want to indicate that you bump into me and blame me for it, by all means. However, please do not dictate what my character does and does not do. I know it is just a bump, but it A) Makes no sense given the context of my previous post and B) has you dictating my actions without even asking me if it was alright.

I know you're saying you want everyone to have fun. But you've already gotten into it with another player, you just got through rolling your eyes at me over having to clarify something that amused at least two other players, and now when I look IC, I see that my character, through no fault of her own, magically ran into you and reddened your nose, whereupon you felt the need to write out a less than subtle threat of "if they were alone / outside"
