The Stage
Technology
People may have cybernetic implants and realistic-looking (but not perfectly seamless) replacement limbs. There are freakin' space ships, cities floating in space, three Dyson Spheres (and only three), some planets and moons terraformed once long ago (this technology has been lost and attempts to duplicate it have been disastrous, see also the Lost Moon of Serenis) and run on ancient generators.
Communication between star systems is not instantaneous, and there are many messenger ships which flit between carrying important news. To captain one of these messenger ships requires membership in the Guild of Spacenautics [name possibly to be changed], and they are pretty darned jealous of their rights. There are of course privateers.
Holographic messages a la a certain space opera we all know and love work about as well as they do in that space opera (i.e., the recordings are finicky and easily damaged).
There are robots, androids, and AI, but robot rights are not something humans or any other sentient species in the galaxy concern themselves with. If robots, androids, or AI concern themselves with this idea, they're keeping it to themselves for now. Historically speaking, there may have been a few tense moments here and there, depending on the planet and the war, but there are always tense moments in history.
Medical technology is good, but the secret of immortality has not been unlocked, consciousness cannot be uploaded to a virtual reality (although there is a cult that believes they're getting close), and how good it is depends on how quickly you get to it. War technology has, unfortunately, outpaced medical technology.
You cannot download information directly into your mind. You have to learn it. You also can't download martial arts or any sort of physical activity directly into your mind and then expect to be able to do that physical activity. However, there are certain ways to enhance your ability to learn and of augmenting your physical body...
