The commanders office

Hida Tamenari, the commander's attendant, met Jiro at the door. "Ah, good to see you, Jiro-san," he said ingratiatingly. "There's an important person who wishes to speak with you, but it needs to be kept quiet."

"...kept quiet?" said Jiro.  That was odd.  It was also not exactly his key skill.

"Well, all right," he said.  "I'm here.  I'll be quiet."

"Go on in, then," Tamenari said, stepping aside.

In the room was a samurai-ko, small but strongly built, wearing well-used armor.  While he had never seen her before, the large warhammer resting on the desk meant this could only be Hida O-Ushi, the only daughter of clan champion Hida Kisada.

"Have a seat," she said, gesturing toward a chair. "Tea? Sake?"

Jiro's eyes widened, and he sat.  This was... not what he'd expected.  At all.

"I am honored," he said, "and sake, please."

In the face of whatever this was, he needed a drink.

O-Ushi poured herself a cup of sake from a bottle on the table, then pushed the bottle and another cup across the desk to him.

"So," she said. "Word got back to us that you might have thought you saw the Kuni daimyo doing something out of the ordinary last week."

Well, shit.

"I would never think of questioning the actions of the daimyo in any way," said Jiro, firmly. "Please understand that!  I... may have seen something I did not expect, I admit.  But I am a humble bushi.  If I thought I saw the daimyo speaking with goblins, I can only assume that it was for excellent reason, or that I did not understand precisely what was going on in that situation.  I certainly make no accusation of any kind."

"No one is saying you did," O-Ushi said, taking a sip of her drink. "But the daimyo wants to make sure that nobody gets the wrong impression.  Your commander says you're not always the best at hiding things, am I right?"

The shit of a thousand onis eating beans.

"I... am not the best suited to such things," Jiro admitted.  "It may be my greatest flaw."

"But you're also a good warrior," she added, "and since you're newly married, the commander was thinking that this posting isn't a good fit for you.  So we have a couple of suggestions.  One is a posting close to Shiro Hiruma, where you can achieve greatness by retaking it for the glory of the clan." Her tone clearly suggested what she thought the odds suceess were.

Jiro couldn't help it.  He winced at that one.

"...I would never turn down an obligation to the clan, but my wife has less practice in fighting the Shadow, and perhaps might not bring as much glory as desired," he said.  "You said there were other suggestions?"

"There's one other," she said. "We sent a magistrate to Ryoko Owari to look into a couple of clan officials we lost to the opium trade, and she hasn't been heard from recently.  We need someone to locate her."

Well.  Snakes and monsters either way.  But... the posting to the city was less clearly suicide.  Also, and more interestingly, it could be an opportunity-- a chance to make his talents shine that went beyond warfare.  Yes.  He was already nodding as the thoughts showed on his face.

"That might suit me well," he said.  "And with my wife's training and talents, we might be able to accomplish great goals for the Crab in this arena. Perhaps that would be more useful for the clan?"

"That's what we were thinking," O-Ushi said.  She sat up and tossed him a wallet of documents. "There are travel papers, some funds, and a letter of introduction to a retired Hiruma bushi who can get you set up."

"I will," said Hiro, gathering up the things he'd been given and heading towards the barracks.  Perhaps this would make Kasumi happy...?
