With a breathy sigh, Sally shook her hands, and hopefully shook off the nervousness, too. She walked toward the cafe with a feigned nonchalance. She deliberately kept her eyes off the S.H.I.E.L.D. pigs. Look at them. Pretending to be normal. Pretending that they fit in and aren’t government Spooks. It reminds me of what I heard about the CIA assholes infiltrating the Black Panthers and the Anti-War groups, she thought ruefully.

Sally kept her eyes forward and her Magnetism pulled tight. If they came ready for her powers, then they came ready to detect her, too. How would they know about me? I’d better rap with Sister Sue when we get back. I think this movement may have an infiltrator! What she looked at discreetly were her options in the environment. She took a mental inventory of the most conductive materials handy. She’d learned how to work with electricity’s before the Timebroker snatched her. She worked out ways to improvise an EMP that would disable any Spook circuitry.

As she arrived, Sally approached Jennifer Walters with the easygoing smile that people associated with her. She sympathized with She-Hulk’s cause, so the smile came naturally. “Hiya, Jen! I’m Sally. This scene is kinda played out, huh? Why don’t we go see if the Village isn’t as sold out as I’ve heard?”

"Good," Danny replies to Luke. "Danny Rand can do fancy. And if push comes to shove, he might be making a very... hasty... entry into the food business. Here's the plan..."

But before he can elaborate, he notices one of his partners is suddenly gone. He watches as Polaris approaches Jennifer and strikes up a conversation, trying not to visibly react for fear of alerting the SHIELD agents that something's up. He can't help but sound a little annoyed as he comments, "Damn, she moves fast."

"Yeah, let's go catch up with her," Wade agreed with Danny. Sally had just sallied forth without waiting for the guys. Now it might attract the wrong kind of attention for the two of them to come strolling up to join her. But what choice did they have?

Danny nods to Wade and heads over to the table where Sally is.

It looks like until a few minutes ago, this cafe was packed.  There are a few empty outdoor tables nearby, still with half-eaten food on them.  All the customers except for Jen appear to have left in a hurry, some of them watching from whatever they consider a safe distance.

Sally sends a magnetic ping through the area. 

The agent is still talking to the woman seated at the outdoor table as she approaches.

"Miss Walters, please write a retraction of the editorial you published this morning.  You signed an agreement to work for us so the optics of the situation..."

"No, the Hulk signed that document.  Without having her lawyer look at it.  If you knew anything about the law regarding two entities sharing the same body you'd know..."

Then Sally strolls up to them and introduces herself.

Jen looks really confused, after all everyone else is trying to maintain a safe distance.  "Look.  Sally.  This isn't really the place for..."

She spots Wade and Danny and gets another slightly different confused look.   "Just, do what you want.  I'm kind of in the middle of something."

“Actually, you have another appointment, Ms. Walters.” Luckily, Sally & Sue turned up modern etiquette for terms of address, and both delighted in this “new” term that gave women autonomy from the burden of marital status. That Gloria Steinem founded a magazine by the name left them ecstatic over what came to pass after they left their worlds! Sally’s smile showed that she enjoyed saying “Ms.”

“Remember? You’ve got an interview scheduled with our magazine. I was just kidding about the Village. They tell me that I’m too free-spirited, but I’m trying to get them to let their hair down, well, one of them doesn’t have any hair to speak of, but you dig what I’m saying? Right?”

Sally smiled amiably, hoping that Jen caught on, and secretly worried that the Agent tuned into her wavelength. She waved at Wade & Danny. “Oh, hi, boys! This is the client the boss wanted us to interview. The whole piece about how our Constitutional rights are currently under attack? He wanted Ms. Walters’ expert opinion. Like, the whole WORLD is gonna see it,” she said with a meaningful grin at the Agent.

"Oh, hello ladies. It's fascinating to find you again. I was trying to catch up with a friend." Says a voice from the shadows with bright feline eyes. "Looks like I found her! Hi Jen!" He grins and waits. "I wanted a bite to eat and you found what looks to be a good place, and you were literally the last place I expected!" Tigro says, "Is this a bad time? Am I interrupting anything?"

“No, Grant. It’s cool. Glad you could join us!” Sally nodded slowly with a sunny grin. “Groovy.”

In reply to Polaris (msg # 27):

"Yeah, gimme a minute," he says as he pulls up the sweatshirt from the hideout he's had for a while and tucks his tail inside the pants. Before slowly comes forward hand in his pockets.

Jen puts her hand to the side of her head.  She closes her eyes for a moment.  The SHIELD agent says "Miss, please give us some space while we talk."

Jen ignores the agent and responds to Sally "Look, I don't know you too," nodding towards human-looking Tigro.  "But I'm not dealing with Wade before my coffee and," pointing at the agent "YOU can go because The Hulk isn't here right now and I don't think you're going to like it when she is."

"Well, then... let's get you some coffee," Wade said in his serious, grown-up voice, snapping his fingers in the direction of a waiter. If the waiter had any sense he'd have quit his job five minutes earlier, but he was still there. "Because we really do need to talk."

(Responding to Jen)
"It's alright, I do understand the need for coffee when dealing with certain people." He smiles and hangs back. Hand in his pockets "Let us know when you want to chat."

“It looks like whoever works here took their own coffee break, Sister.” Sally peeked around the coffeehouse, her eyes stopping on the espresso machine where the baristas (she wouldn’t know the term) cowered. “Maybe that’s a good thing, because this place strictly…Squaresville,” she said with a disapproving wrinkle of her nose. “It’s New York, there’s gotta be someplace funkier than this overpriced turn off.”

"I love this place."
"Miss Walters is not free to leave yet.  I'm going to make a call to my superiors.

Mr. Wilson, I can't believe I'm asking this, but can you try to talk some sense into her?  We need She-Hulk to help with an incursion in Midtown."

The agent heads back to his car.  The SHIELD androids back up slightly.

Wade snickered. He couldn't help it. Apparently the Wade Wilson of this world was as annoying as Funnybone, and — mistaking him for his doppelganger — people kept expecting the worst of him.

"What's an incursion?" he asked, reasonably sure he knew the answer. They were an incursion.

The agent just laughs and shakes his head at Wade's question as he walks back to the truck.

Jen gets up from her table and heads into the building.  She shoves several hundred dollar bills into the tip jar.

"Sorry about scaring everyone away.  Can I still get my latte?  And whatever they want?"  She asks the people cowering behind the counter.

"Coffee," Wade said to the barista. "Black as the devil, hot as hell, pure as an angel, sweet as love."

“Right on, Jen,” Sally said with an appreciative smile for She-Hulk. “I hate to mooch, but if you’re offering, can I have the Matcha Green Tea Latte?”

Danny had been keeping his eyes peeled for any sign of danger, content that his teammates could handle the talking. It was reassuring to see how they were handling this so far. Even Dead-- no, Funnybone, was a far cry from the Wade Wilson he knew back home, who no doubt would have gotten the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents on their backs before he'd said more than two words to them.


"Matcha green tea lat--" he starts, then blinks in surprise as Sally orders the same. He'd already been impressed by Polaris' smooth approach to things. But the lady had good taste as well.

The baristas work on the drinks - Wade's simple order comes out first.  "Sweet as love."  There's no sugar.  If he was expecting Turkish coffee with that phrase, it's not what he gets.

As soon as Jen grabs her cup, she says "You should say whatever you need to before he comes back."

“Your righteous pal, Luke Cage, sent us here. We’ve gotta beat feet and rendezvous with him. Like now.”

"Well tell him he should stay away from me.  You'll just get blamed when she causes an incident.  Keep SHIELD away too.  They want a Hulk, and they already lost one."

With time growing short, Sally finally lost her patience with Jen’s dismissiveness. “Look, Sister, I don’t know what went down between you and Luke. I’m gonna lay this on you, though: I don’t care.” She glanced toward the S.H.I.E.LD. van, scanning subtly with magnetic senses, then back at Jen. “What I know is that your world stands on the precipice of falling into a fascist nightmare! Yes, people have been hurt, even died, and I care about the innocents who were hurt because a bunch of super-powered jackasses had to prove who was the biggest badass of all…and children died because of it! Yeah, real big men, and Tony Fucking Stark has to show America that he’s the Top Dog, the ‘Biggest Man’ of them all!

I’m hearing some way out things about his plans for dissident Super-Types, like beyond any Alcatraz or gulag! Captain America is pissed…and how many more people will get hurt, or die, when Captain America and Iron Man wage the next Civil War?!” Sally stared Jennifer Walters in the eye, refusing to be easily dismissed. “I’m hearing some scary shit about what’s gonna go down if we don’t get it together and bring this pending Civil War to a halt!” She thought of the violence that ravaged so many streets over the fight between Civil Rights protesters and the police upholding segregation. She thought of the college kids back in her time risking all to fight against an endless war that burned on in Vietnam, grinding American boys and Vietnamese civilians alike under the bloody wheels of the War Machine.

Sally Dane wouldn’t let a superhuman version of that domestic war tilt this world into chaos without a fight. “Look, you’re afraid of your power. I get it. I swear that I do! But I also believe that you’re a good woman and that you don’t want the world to go helter skelter because of this feud! Please, come with us. Just hear us all out in a safe space. If you don’t like what we lay on you, then you can us to go to Hell or whatever. Please. We don’t have time for this!”

"I don't know much about law," Wade said, throwing his proverbial hat into the ring. "Usually, I find out by breaking them. But I know that SHIELD is looking to protect people at this moment. Later today it might all be about the suppression of civil liberties and other fun stuff like that... but that's not what the deal is right now. They said something about an "incursion" and they made it sound important.

"So Hulk up... Hulk out... Hulk it... whatever. Stop making me be the voice of reason."
