Re: IC 000: Introduction

"Oh, Celestials? Nope! They exist inside space-time and we exist entirely outside space-time. Very difficult to deal with, and thankfully they almost never break their own timelines directly."

"It's less... 'always have, always will' and more... like your human concept of  simultaneous but like a recursively nesting set of infinities moreso. Your brains evolved to deal with three-dimensional space and one-dimensional time; our neurological models indicate that attempting to demonstrate our nature mathematically would have a 99.27% chance of permanently preventing you from undertaking Missions."

The Timebroker looks... sad. "We are sorry for any uncertainty and/or reduced morale this unsatisfactory answer may have caused."

Re: IC 000: Introduction

Funnybone’s lyrical delivery fascinated Sally. The burning skull hadn’t scared her after his initial “flaming on”. His look reminded her of the Grateful Dead poster art already making the rounds in her world. Everything about Wade’s fiery persona brought to mind the heavier new sound in rock music. His spectacle distracted Sally from her irritation with the Timebroker’s smugness.

Sue, bless her, maintained her scientific approach. Sally stepped up beside the blonde biologist. “I don’t think that’s gonna get you anywhere, Sue. Evasiveness and acting mysterious are his trip...if he’s even a person, and not some projection of our collective consciousness.” She looked at the Timebroker. “You said that we’re here to repair the Multiverse. How do we accomplish that?”

quote:
"Okay, I get that.  You don't...work with any other entities? The Celestials, for example?
...
Just kind of do your thing, always have, always will?"

Iron Fist continues to listen in silence as the Timebroker speaks to he and his companions. Finally, he looks from Unseen to their strange new host, his expression unreadable. "I think what she's trying to say is, what's the catch?"

Re: IC 000: Introduction

Polaris:
She looked at the Timebroker. “You said that we’re here to repair the Multiverse. How do we accomplish that?”

"We're going to send you to broken timelines. One at a time, from your limited perspective. You're going to fix each individual timeline by correcting the deviation, putting the timeline 'back on track' and preventing it from collapsing and taking 'nearby' timelines with it-- thus saving every sentient life in both the timeline you repair and those 'nearby' timelines."

The Timebroker gestures with an open hand and a golden gauntlet has suddenly always been floating above it, twirling slowly to let you see it from every angle.

"We've devised this system, called the Tallus to assist you. It will relay our instructions to you clearly and precisely so that you can complete your objectives as efficiently as possible."

"And, of course... each and every one of you will be given the opportunity to repair your own personal timelines as soon as we have repaired enough of the Multiverse to make that possible."

Iron Fist:
<quote Iron Fist> "I think what she's trying to say is, what's the catch?"

The Timebroker scoffs. "There's no catch, Mister Rand. You're already dead; we've already demonstrated our capacity to deliver our rewards. This is a one-hundred percent carrot operation."

"Our exhaustive psychological models on you-- all of you-- indicate that we can safely admit, without compromising long-term mission integrity, that we do not have the means to discipline your team in any fashion. Thankfully, we selected all of you on the cold mathematical assurance that discipline wouldn't be necessary."

You could've brought Em Jay with me when you plucked me out of there.  You just.  You just let her die?

The colors on Spider-woman's suit flicker from white to black in some places, going back and forth every few seconds.  Way too many tiny spiders move back and forth over the color-changing areas.

She's crying, and some of the tears are black drops that turn into spiders when they hit the ground.

The Timebroker claps his hands, once, and rubs them together. "Well! We think orientation has gone delightfully, and now that our 'questions & answers' portion has concluded, it's time to get down to business!"

"As soon as you nominate a leader to wear the Tallus, you can get your first mission briefing and start saving the Multiverse!"

“He already told us, Spider-Woman. If we play his game and restore these timelines, you’ll save your friend.” Sally sympathized with her, but the Timebroker only revealed what was convenient for him to share. “I nominate Sue. She’s the most level-headed one of us.”

"Sue? The one with the talent for hiding? Good call," Funnybone said. He looked about the group. There was the hippie, the little girl made of spiders, the guy who didn't like to talk, the Thundercat (who spoke even less), and the possibly hallucinatory blue bunny. Or him. "Yeah, seconded."

Re: IC 000: Introduction

Iron Fist keeps his eyes on the Timebroker, still not sure whether to trust the strange, seemingly-omnipotent being. Danny's punched out his share of demons, mystic entities, and even a "god" (lower-case 'G'), but nothing quite like this guy. The idealist in him that he buried so long ago wants to believe the altruistic message coming from their hosts' mouth. After all, he and the other heroes are alive, when judging by their stories they should all be dead right now. Maybe it's best to go along with this plan, and see where this group ends up... for now.

He shrugs as the question of leadership is brought up. "Fine by me." Sue seems to have a good head on her shoulders, at least as far as he can tell.

Re: IC 000: Introduction

Susan thought back over some of her outbursts and reactions, and was surprised.   Frankly, she was a little burned out on gizmos, after being married to Reed.  Not that he let her handle much of his precious work.  But, what the hell.  She'd once had an Ultimate Nullifier in her keeping, and lived to tell the tale.   And she was already dead, anyway.  So...

"Okay. Alright.  I feel sort of like I should give an acceptance speech, like Oscar night:  And, I'd like to thank...nope, never mind.  Let's just get this show on the road.  I need to get home.  Woodstock is next month. I've got tickets."

Re: IC 000: Introduction

"I'm not done with our question time.  You left out some rather critical information important to any business getting done.  I'll recap the important points, then tell you where you messed up."

So let me recap:  We don't exist.  You'll be sending copies of us to other timelines to fix them in a way you think will stop them from messing with other timelines.  Multiple timelines, no clear number outside at least the seven we started in.  You mathematically calculated it would take a minimum of the seven of us to have favorable odds.  You can copy our minds back to before we died in a way that lets us change things.  You're a... what was Quill's earth term.  Oh, right.  You're a total superhero fanboy gushing joy at our involvement.  And the distinct leash you just offered with a supposed lack of consequences means there is a very real chance we won't all make it out of your mess.  That sounds like BIG problems you got there."

"Here's where ya went wrong:  It also sounds like a LOT of work.  And work certainly means getting paid.  A lot of pay for a lot of work, and big payouts for big jobs.  You want my help, I want an assurance I'm getting what I want.  And I don't want that tied to some hidden contract detail like if I make it back or not."

Rocket pulls a certain twig out from his jumpsuit, and holds it up to the Timebroker.

"I want you to set this right.  If you actually wanted heroes, he should be the one here."

((If people were questioning his stability before, that twig is quite the fire starter. XD  Rocket can address the whole 'leader' thing after his demand is addressed.))

((EDIT: I am super curious if any players managed to figure out what the stick is by this point.))

The Timebroker glowers at Rocket; his countenance grows woeful and he grows massively in stature without growing in size. He is not some conjuror of cheap tricks. "Your analysis is very astute, Mister Rocket, but you are mistaken. We did not actually want heroes. We wanted highly competent, highly motivated superpowered individuals who can get the job done."

The Timebroker visibly relaxes. He sighs.

"Your acumen and your paranoia were part of why we selected you for this team, Mister Rocket. This conversation was accounted for."

"There is nothing we can do about it if you die in the line of duty. We cannot intervene twice. But your timelines are broken, broken by your deaths, and if we cannot return you to them intact... we are still required to solve them by any means necessary. This is not enticement, this is multiversal necessity."

Rocket:
Rocket pulls a certain twig out from his jumpsuit, and holds it up to the Timebroker.

"I want you to set this right.  If you actually wanted heroes, he should be the one here."

"As we already stated, we do not want the best heroes we can acquire. The best heroes, mathematically, will fail. We have calculated inerringly that Groot is more efficient as motivation than as a teammate. We made the same calculation with Mary Jane. With Alex. With Johnny. With Vanessa."

Unfortunately, the color I'd picked for the Jugg Havok wasn't the best idea.

"The only assurances we have left to offer you are that we are doing everything in our power to save your loved ones, but you-- our eXiles-- are, literally, everything in our power."

"Mathematically speaking, you're going to sort yourselves out now. You're going to do your jobs, and you're going to save the Multiverse. Our professional orientation is now concluded. The Tallus will take care of everything else you need."

Suddenly, the Timebroker was never here.

In reply to Polaris (msg # 53):

"That was very odd, the Timebroker? I'm pretty sure never met them before. As for being dead, I don't feel dead. But saving worlds? I'm good for that." He rumbles with a chuff at the end.

This is very odd, he thinks to himself, but in for curiosities sake is definitely  worthwhile.

"Anyway, So, anyone have any other odd things they want to share?"

Re: IC 000: Introduction

Spider-woman's hood peels back (without her hands touching it) showing a 20-year old (at most) blonde girl wearing a black headband.  The top half of her costume morphs into a plain red v-neck t-shirt, and a white button-down shirt that ties itself around her waist.  Below the waist it remains black leggings with blue ballet flats - looking less like a costume and more like normal clothing.  She's really thin, but what's there is muscle.  The costume change involves a lot of tiny legs moving while it happens, but ends up indistinguishable from cloth after just a few seconds.

She's not exactly happy, but seems a little calmer.

"I have one more thing."  She shouldn't say it, he can probably hear.  Gwen isn't the most subtle though.  "I think Timebroker set the bomb."

Explosion big enough to kill me instantaneously with no warning from Spider-sense?  Way beyond the capabilities of New York's current Supervillains.

OOC: I noticed the stick first time around when you checked your pockets.  Hoping something interesting comes out of that.

Re: IC 000: Introduction

Susan frowned at Fem Spidey's implication, that all their deaths may have been arranged.

"I really f--king hope not.  But, whether true or no, it doesn't change our route to the exit sign."    She glanced to Twig Daddy, but said it as much to all the others:

"Look, I'll wear this Tallus thingy.   But, I've zero interest in trying to assert myself as some kind of GI Jane field commander.  Back home, I was an indie, not a team member.  I believe in the power of freewill.  What I would advise, is that we try to get a clearer picture of each other's strengths and knowledge, so we've some idea who should make the call in which situation."

She watched Spider-Woman's transformation into her street togs.

"That's really, really handy.  Though if it feels like bugs crawling all over you, you must have nerves of steel."   She glanced down at her own halter-crop top, bohemian long skirt, and sandals.

"As for the rest of us?  Are we like stuck with the threads we came here in?   I can't even ride a motorcycle in this!"

“Well, I don’t know if I want to fly in this getup.” Sally motioned at her jewel-toned psychedelic mini-dress & go-go boots with a downward flourish of her hands. “It’s cute for the Doors show I wanted to catch, but I’m gonna flash a LOT of super-baddies in it! I dig what you’re saying about leadership style, though. I care less about establishing hierarchy and more about getting back home to my man and my world.”

“Of course they’re alive!” Wade’s quip about Elvis drove an important point home for Sally. “Wait a minute. Are you & Bugs from the future?” She grinned with wide eyes at the possibility. Please tell me that Nixon was a one-term president, and that they finally legalized abortion!”

She did her best to adjust to the leering death's head visage.  "They're all still alive in mine.   Jimi is at Woodstock, next month.  The Doors turned it down, for some reason -- I still can't believe it!"   She gave Sally a look of profound empathy.

"Dying before a Doors show - that's...I'm sorry."

Sue then tried to get the image of a ninety year old Elvis, striving to gyrate, out of her mind.   It was nearly as bad as the death's head.

Gwen is used to the weird looks about the spiders.  They don't phase her anymore (well, a little when they do things she didn't ask them too)

To Sue, she says "My life is weird.  I made my peace with it, and this way I don't have to do laundry.

slight pause.  All of those people died way before I was born.  The omnipotent jerk said the Tallus would provide 'everything you need.'"  There are air quotes involved.

"That's gotta include clothes.  And I was not joking about that pizza.  I don't think Bugs and Tony will blend into our worlds just from a trip to the mall.  At least Bones has something figured out  Let's find out what we're up against."

Re: IC 000: Introduction

"Nixon is... complicated," Funnybone replied. Nixon was still a hot-button issue, decades later. The assassination was a distinctly polarizing event in American history. But talking about abortion wasn't something Funnybone wanted to engage in; Wade and Zarathos strongly disagreed on the subject. "But I think we'll have plenty of time to compare universes. Sounds like it's still nineteen sixty-nine, maybe, where you come from...? Viet Nam and Ban the Bomb? If so, my world would make you cry. Twenty-twenty sucked.

"Anyway, if we need to save the multiverse, that sounds like a pretty big project. Not as big as putting together a desk from IKEA, but big. Maybe we ought to get started."

He paused. Looked around. They were still on the endless patch of desert, with nothing else in sight.

"I don't think we go anywhere until someone—" he stared at Sue "—puts on the tallus."

“Oh, it’s cool, Sister.” Sally flashed Sue a Peace sign with a tiny smile. “I saw them play Whiskey A Go Go. This Woodstock sounds like the ultimate happening, though. I dig Jimin Hendrix...!”

The way Spider-Woman—who turned out to be a petite blonde only two years younger than Sally—said “Music History Class” revealed a telling tidbit about her, too. “Between your unisex clothes and funky hairstyle—and the fact that people apparently wear spiders where you come from—I’m tuning into a futuristic wavelength for you, too.”

Wade’s revelation sobered Sally up. “Someone assassinated Nixon? Whoa. Heavy, man.” Luckily, talk of the Tallus distracted Sally from too much rumination about the dark world of 2020.

“Yeah, Sue. Put it on.”

Spider-Woman:
"I think Timebroker set the bomb."

'Oh god, why didn't I piece that together?  I'm so used to blaming Quill it got in the way!'

Unseen:
"[...] it doesn't change our route to the exit sign."

'and his profiles on us are exceedingly accurate it seams.'

Rocket calmly puts his twig away, and picks up his gun again.  While he's cleaning it up again, he'll talk.

Spider-Woman:
I don't think Bugs and Tony will blend into our worlds just from a trip to the mall.

"Don't be hard on yourself like that.  Besides, I've been to Earth multiple times!  Outside a lot of stares, nobody starts nothing.  As soon as they can't figure out what to do, they jump right to their default behaviors with clearing my throat a couple times.  And if I can manage business interactions there, you and Tony will be fiine."

Funnybone|Polaris:
"—puts on the tallus." | “Yeah, Sue. Put it on.”
'Oh, great, now I got to deal with two Quills.'

"I'd suggest we leave the damn leash off until we're all on the same page about just how dangerous it is.  I don't know if you caught the context of that round of bad news, but let me clear up a few additional things.  I lied about the fanboy thing to annoy him, he was gloating to himself about his 'math' working.  That means he's not an 'applied' expert.  Things will go wrong, its instructions may be impossible, and there is a very real chance that Timebroker fellah has enemies that started the whole mess he wants us to clean up, or he himself is working on multiple solutions in tandem that will conflict with one another.  Either way, or both, whoever puts on his way of keeping us under control better be the hardest among us to steal it from, because that crippling crutch is a massive bulls-eye."

"I am glad some of us caught on to the fact that he wasn't asking us to choose our leader, he was asking us to choose who wears our leader.  That gaudy gauntlet is going to be calling all the shots as it's our only way home.  And if you were counting on it doing anything useful this adventure, the Timebroker clearly 'calculated' that we were all the math he counted on."

"It frustrates me to no Krutacking end that he gets to get away with killing at least half of us, and he's got us all pegged so well we're still stuck dancing to his tune.  So if anyone wants out, I understand.  But he got me right, and I'd kill Quill's god complex living planet of a first dad all over again solo to see that done.  Know I've dealt with his type before, and we'll find ourselves a decent loophole for you get out with."

"I doubt anyone missed that we only have one shot at this, but to make things worse, every time we fix one of our own dimensions OR someone croaks, we lose manpower.  Don't die out there trying to protect any of us.  Keep within your means.  I assume most of you got your own skill set to draw from."

"I also suggest you actually listen to what I say."
Rocket glares at Wade with that line, but not the following.  "If I tell you to do something like 'steal that yellow shoe off that guy' and you don't, there's a very real chance another team got to keep their Tallus and continue disrupting us.  Leadership will be a crutch here, so I don't care who wears the krutacking knick-knack, but they sure ain't no leader.  I don't work in that kind of team anymore."

"On the note of listening to what I say, I have quite the literal and extensive library of nearly all things engineering exceeding what I know of Earth's capacity directly forced into my brain.  I wouldn't suggest we take apart our new boss, but if it happens we'd better keep the pieces."

"If anyone else has some key insight to contribute on the topic of how screwed we are, I suggest sharing.  If I can listen to Quill's stupid ideas and Earth references, you guys should be a breath of fresh air."

((EDIT: Quotes.  I'll miss the little things like here most.  Leaving out the word 'sign' after exit.  'Bugs' to 'bugs' / 'tallus' to 'Tallus' and such.  I'll miss them.))

"1969," she affirmed.    "I thought 2001 was the future.  But, I don't know any Nixon.  Howard Stark's the president of our US."

To Sally: "The Whiskey -- are you from SoCal, too?  I just moved to Ocean Beach. It's like San Diego's Haight-Ashbury.  You and I need to rap more.  I'm curious now how much your world resembles mine."

Sue had taken it in stride that Spider-Woman's apparel wasn't a familiar style.   Aside from Sally, no one's style was familiar.  She said to her:

"Weird is relative.  Relatively, we've all got weird lives. Or after-lives. Whatever."

The time had come:  "Okay. So. The Tallus. Sounds like the name of a naughty toy, doesn't, it?  A Tallus is a girl's best friend," she soothed, with a wink and a faux-wicked smile.

Then, without more ado, Sue put the thing on...
