This is Barovia - Toril? Eberron? Mystara? Whatever the Greyhawk planet is called? No one remembers the name of the world this land was once part of, but it is now its own plane that you have magically been brought to by the demonic forces that keep everyone here. Forever.

Where are you from? It can be any existing DND world.

How did you get here? Obviously magical accident, but how? Were you trying to teleport to Avernus? Were you being burned at the stake for being a witch? Did you drink an expired health potion?

If you don’t know typical settings I suggest being from Waterdeep in faerun, it’s the most common forgotten realms city. Like you said, it won’t matter, but I cringe when players say “I don’t remember.” or put no effort into who they were.

I feel like keeping secrets from players isn’t my style. I like building the story together. Not a “my world and you all live in it” but a collaboration, I’m just the chief editor.

Of course once we get into the module secrets will abound, but I already showed my biggest secret: Stuart is actually Strahd.

As for beginning adventure... maybe run an Adventurer's League module or old 2e module or a freebie/cheapie off of DM's Guild? Something to get our feet wet without the need to Death House...

How about The Way of The Ascendant Dragon from UA? I don’t think the undead would relish a fire damage from unarmed and breath attacks. Are there any UA kits off the table?

I don’t know all of UA, so it’s not not allowed, if you know what I mean. I’ll look at the dragon thing you mentioned and see if it seems not broken or over powered and as long as it’s a good fit for the party it’s cool.
