* Technically the Commissar is a commissioned officer. However, by custom and practice they defer to the squad's sergeant. The only exception is when the sergeant is unable to lead, perhaps because they are dead. In that case, the commissar will select the new leader of the squad and begin deferring to them. The commissar should only lead if there is no other option.
