While we wait...

Kassidy appears sullen and removed from the action. Despite the exciting events occurring she retreats to a nearby tree and stares off blankly while dealing with her inner demons.

The burly lumberjack shakes his head, looks slightly concerned, and then lets out a boisterous laugh.  Hah!  Boris say it is no time to rest!  There is villians to slay, treasures to pocket, and mead to drink!  And think of the starving children.  She is so strong and so sad.  Boris can make her happy. Boris will wait for Kassidy.

Ezra suddenly feels the weight of all his 70+ years. For a brief moment, he feels lost and unsure of what has happened over the last few months. The moment passes and a look of resolve returns to his old visage. He realizes that he does not need to bear this weight alone. Looking fondly at the other, he can count on those around him.

Did we use italics to say things out of character last time?

Did I teach that crow to sit menacingly on my shoulder and say grim and dark things?

Also will I get a separate NPC character thread so I can still post as the dog?

I think we used orange font or something last time, but let's just use italics for saying things out of character and bold for dialogue.

You'll have to wait and see about the crow.  :)

I created a new player (Ben the dog) for you. Let me know if that works.

Actually, looks like we used:

Bold for dialogue with quotes
Italics for inner thoughts
Orange for OOC. You can highlight text with a color by selecting it in the styled text menu, lower right.

Down to one!!!

I've read the first and the last (and the summary) at this point. I'm going to try to read through one journal entry a day until I get caught up.

I think the last one is the important one. It seems to have the quite a bit of exposition/background/what's really happening info in it (although it also has a bunch of spoilers for what came before ... so if you want to read it sequentially and be surprised at our antics ... that's probably the best (but slowest) way to get caught up).

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)

The way I currently understand it:
1. We've just arrived back to the caves with the refugees after a successful supply run.
2. We've learned the origins of the Spiders (how they were created by the mysterious Sa Karan wizard race ... and that they were banished to another dimension). Evil Sa Karan might be the "Masters" of the Spider race (iirc .. not 100% sure about that).
3. They want to experiment on humans (& maybe halflings) (but kill other demi-humans outright (elves, dwarves)). Humans were created by Sa Karan originally.
4. We've found a portal to their dimension, but it was gated and we had no way through.
5. We know the Spiders have killed the King and all of his heroes (i.e. the Nine?). I think we have all of the Nine accounted for at this point...
6. We know the Spiders have captured the Princess (now Queen?) (probably planning to experiment on her).
7. We know that Lord Herrick leads the refugees and wants a big showdown with the Spiders. We've secured the allegiance of the Orcs & the Dwarves (& I vaguely recall the Lumberjacks/Woodsmen ... not 100% sure of the last one).

What we need to do (as I see it):
1. Rescue the Princess!
2. Help build the resistance (i.e. Lord Herrick's Army). Attain the allegiance of the Elves maybe? I believe there's some other human city-states as well that live down the coast. Thematically, it does feel like we should go get the Elves to help too.
3. Inspire the Refuges to not give up hope.
4. Get Buzzby some better pipeweed! Whatever he's been smoking stinks up the camp!
5. More chicken for Ben the dog!
6. Teach Nute to shave ... cause that thing on his upper lip is just embarrassing at this point.

Post when you have 1) checked your character sheet and 2) read enough of the journals to think you're ready. I know it's a lot, but the one-journal-a-day is how I did it.  I still need to provide a synopsis of the last scene in the Timeline and get ready for ACT V!!!

Anybody playing any good games lately? I'm always looking for good ones to play with the family.

I somehow got a copy of Warhammer Quest: Cursed City, so I've been burning my hobby time putting together the miniatures for that. They're beautiful, but not for the novice/faint of heart. I'm planning on making my kids play with me (that's why I had them after all! :-)).

I also pulled out my old copy of Magic Realm the other day/month (the 1970's was the pinnacle of boardgame design donchaknow) and it was a pretty big hit too! The Boy played the Woods Girl and sniped monsters in the Deep Woods and the Girl played the Berserker and berserked her way across the Realm. I played the Dwarf and got eaten by Giant Bats...

Played a game of Blitz Bowl with the boy yesterday. Literal Fantasy Football that takes place in a dungeon. My Undead Team against his Skaven/Ratmen team.

I was down 5 points going into the last 2 plays. I managed a clean sweep of the scoring objectives (taking all 3 ... gives a bonus of 2 points) after my Ghoul threw an obstructed pass for a touchdown to a Skeleton on a 6 on a d6! The crowd went wild as I scored 8 points in a single turn, putting me ahead by 3.

The devious Skaven came back strong on the final play though, sneaking a Rat lineman into the endzone and using their speed to scoop up the ball. A long pass needing a 5 or 6 to tie up the game ... and it goes wide!

The buzzer sounds and the Undead wins! Woooooohoooo!!!

Sorry everyone, I sort of forgot about this for a bit there.

Daryl, finding a Cursed City is supremely lucky. Good jorb on that!

Is Blitz Bowl a variation of Blood Bowl or a competitor to it?

Talisman Star Wars, Harry Potter, Batman and Kingdom Hearts are kind of killing my love of the game. One is great. Four (and more on the way) is a bit much and frankly I don't have enough time to play the original.
I got the super special edition Talisman RPG but the thing is so riddled with editorial issues it's hard for me to read. It look pretty on the shelf next to all my 2nd and 4th edition Talisman boxes though.

We've been doing a lot of low to medium weight cooperatives. My girls do not get along so competitive play doesn't work in my house anymore. So the Funko Back to the Future and Ravensburger's Horrified are the current "most played".

Blitz Bowl is the "starter" Blood Bowl that GW sells exclusively through Barne's and Noble. It's a surprisingly fun beer and pretzel's game. It doesn't hurt that I've somehow managed to pick up a few (like 8-10) blood bowl teams over the years ... so I can field a pretty large swathe of the optional content that comes in the box.

I also got Lord's of Waterdeep recently, I like it. It's very much a simpler (and easier to understand) version of Agricola. Since one of my issues with Agricola is it's difficult to grasp how "well" you're doing wrt score at any particular time ... I think it's a slight improvement.

The current big hit is "Marrying Mr. Darcy". We went through a Jane Austen kick with the kid's a few years back after listening to Pride and Prejudice during a long car trip. When we got home we saw the Kiera Knightly movie, and then the "Death at Pemberly Hall" on Netflix. When Ethan can handle it, maybe we'll watch "Pride & Prejudice & Zombies". Last game three of the four of us all tried to marry Col. Fitzwilhem and he turned us all down! Then to add insult to injury we ended up as bitter and alone Old Maids ... it was hilarious!

In reply to Ezra (msg # 42):

That would explain why I'm clueless on the Blitz Bowl. The Target and B&N exclusives have been a massive thorn in the side, not because of lack of sales but lack of information. Games Workshop, as one example, does not send out alerts to us that they're doing a new product with X exclusive contract, so all we get is random call from customer saying "can you get this in? I'd like to buy through you" and then I spend a week trying to figure out why it exists on BoardGameGeek but not in any catalog or website. The industry keeps coming up with new ways to use my time.

Waterdeep and Darcy are definitely modern classics. I miss the story driven games like Darcy. Most everyone I play with wants heavy thinkers. I'm all for puzzle games from time to time but I need to mix it up too.
Chris moved back to New Mexico so I'm out my normal "lighter faire" gaming buddy.

I still check in here occasionally though.

We've been revisiting Love Letter while we eat lately. It's probably the best game of its style out there. It's alway fun when you make a lucky guess with a Guard on the first turn and take someone out.

I also picked up GW's Dominion box set (mainly for the cool old style orcs ... they look like they'll fit in well with the 100+ Grenadier Orcs I painted when I still lived in Colorado Springs).

Boulder currently has 3 game/hobby shops! I don't know how long that will last for, it doesn't feel like we're big enough to support three.

I keep imagining doing a narrative side story with just Kassidy and Ezra but not sure how to do it beyond just "add on a story" style which can get stale fast with two people.

GW has been pumping out the amazing large boxes. The Orc set was astounding and the new Kill Team box is pretty amazing too. I'm glad I'm not a miniaturist or I'd be drowning in "to do" lists.

Colorado Springs is up to 9 game stores, 3 comic shops with gaming, 2 hobby towns, and 6 strictly comics that still sell pokemon/magic cards. Throw in Barnes & Noble, Target and Walmart selling designer games and the total number of competitors in this market is well over 30. I'm ASTOUNDED that I'm still in business.

As for games, I've been playing a lot of Shadows of Brimstone/Forbidden Fortress which is now my favorite game. I've also been playing Eldritch Horror, which would be so much fun to play with all of you. Morgan and I continue to play two-player Marvel Munchkin (I created a two player variant that is more fun than playing with 3 players), but I'm losing her to teenage years as I did with Ella. For the kids, I can get Erin to do brain games... abstracts, Ingenious, Chess, Cathedral... but to be honest I think I am the problem there. It doesn't interest me as much as it does her. Still, she spends time with me, so that's a plus. For Claire, it has to have a tie-in to Anime or Video games. So I can get Kingdom Hearts Talisman on the table but not regular Talisman. Stardew Valley the boardgame sometimes... And with the release of the My Hero Academia card game, she's now in to a CCG... back to money-sink gaming for me! Yeehah! But generally, it's me doing the begging now. Solo gaming is becoming more my thing. Although Reed and I have been doing a TON of Marvel Champions at the store. Store gaming is a practice in patience and non-concentration so mainly it's Reed playing the game and me distractedly reacting.

I like Atomic Goblin in Longmont. I've worked with them indirectly and I have the impression they're really cool. They also have a better HobbyTown IMO.

Okay, so, let's get this party rolling!!!

I'm doing well ... still here! I check in a little less frequently now, but I'm still checking in.

I somehow missed the part where Paul said he has a Lake Cabin. I now want to go visit Paul, and sit on a dock playing board games! I have a new-ish house (3 years ago), which is actually in Boulder. It's about 100 meters from a trail head. So that's been an awesome change. It also has a huge game room/bar in the basement, in case anyone wants to visit.

I don't know if I mentioned it before, but we also got a dog. Rosie Posie Laikha. I will not confirm whether or not she was named after one of the 3 named female characters from Lord of the Rings (and the love interest of the main character!). She's mostly hyper allergenic, so if anyone visits it's unlikely she'll set off allergies. She just turned a year old.

On the game front, I bought "Space Marine Adventures: Countdown" from Barnes and Noble recently. It's another one of the bookshelf games that GW only sells through B&N. It's a 20-ish minute cooperative/solo game. The boy puts up with playing it with me, although he says he like the theme of Crypt-Hunters (a similar game ... but with paladins and ghosts) better. It uses hexes ... and I have a thing for hex based systems.

I also got a chance to play D&D. A couple of people at work run a Halloween D&D game every year (a one-shot). It always pulls in a bunch of beginners, so it's kept very kid's glovey. I think we had one combat (which lasted a single round ... I got to swing my axe twice) over the 8 hours we played. I had fun making my 5th level Goblin Maniac (i.e. Berserker Barbarian) though. I got to eat a lot of snacks too! So that's a win!

While we wait...

Still here! Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.

I'm hoping to play some games with the kids since they don't have school this week. We played "Poetry for Neanderthals" yesterday ... I got to hit the boy a couple of times with the "No!" club. That's my definition of a great game!

Paul, I don't know if you still watch Survivor, but we had a surreal Survivor moment last night. I was looking at the new shows on Netflix and there were new episodes of Survivor. I started it up and Sudha's like ... "I know that person ... we used to work together!" Apparently one of the contestants was a tech writer at Oracle in Sudha's group. That could've been you!

BTW, when are we doing the Amazing Race! :-)

While we wait...

In reply to Ezra (msg # 52):

I'm checking in once to twice a month. So we're on the same schedule here, Daryl.

Man, if my life wasn't so booked solid, I would make a concerted effort to come see you. I'm so tired of interruptions in my gaming that I've gotten sort of tired of trying. The store is obviously customers needing help so I can't say no to that, and at home my girls do NOT get along so it's only a matter of time before games boil down to a petty argument that results in one person stomping away or being sent to their rooms... sigh. So yeah, a lake cabin and or another persons home sounds so amazing.

We were set to go up to Ian's for thanksgiving. Planned on a ton of games as I'm the expected game master at our families events, but today Trina (Ian's wife) tested positive. So we're staying home with no food since they were planning it... spaghetti dinner for Thanksgiving I guess. Neither Rebecca nor I want to go to the grocery store tomorrow. We're a tad bit lazy and a lot bit tired of trying.

I dusted off my Weird War Savage and started reading that. Also, my old RPG manager wrote a book (Jackals by Osprey) that's set in a fantasy sword and sandals world loosely based on Egypt, Rome, Babylon sort of empires. I sort of want to run that too but the idea of teaching and learning new systems... man I am whiny, and old, and tired...

Happy New Year! May this year be better than the last.

I went to the front page and I see there is 64 posts in this group. I go into the group and I see 54 in this thread and 8 in the announcement thread ... for a total of 62.

Where did the other 2 posts go? hmmmm ... I bet there's a secret thread I'm not invited too. It's high school all over again!

You go Buzzby/Brett!

My Nephew (Sam's son (Paul might remember Sam)) just took a job at Amazon in the Seattle area. I now have another reason to head to the Pacific Northwest! Just need to get over this whole Covid thing so I can travel again.

Time for a check-in...

Just picked up the Labyrinth role playing game. Oddly they titled it adventure game which is what I define something like Talisman but, grasping at straws...
For young to tween kids it works pretty well. It's basically just a big book of encounters and you randomly play through a set number of them until you make it to the final encounter of the Goblin King. Not bad. If you want a light rpg I'd say it's worth looking into. It's about 5 years too late for my house but maybe I'll get to do it with grandchildren or my teens might take pity on me some day.

Reed and I have been playing 'The Loop' and the GI Joe Deck Builder, both cooperative, which is nice to not be nailed into the ground repetitively by Reed's luck when we play competitive.

Nothing really new to report. Just miss you all.

Just poking my head in.

Anybody else checking in periodically.

I picked up Everdell this week, so I'm going to try that with the kids (maybe tonight). I'm hoping I get to play the hedgehogs! Go Hedgehogs!

I have played several games of Everdell. It's good, but I still don't quite have a handle on what's going on/how to win. Sometimes a strategy that works well one game completely falls apart the next. Go hedgehogs!

Anyone here?

I bought Root, but haven't had a chance to play it yet. It's thematically the type of game that the whole family likes (cute and cuddly forest critters), but direct conflict games tend to go over poorly at my house (only Ethan and I like them). We'll see if the asymmetric race rules makes it more interesting for the others.

Looking forward to using guerrilla tactics with my Woodland Creature Alliance to take down the haughty Cats and aloof Raptors.

Since my last update, we played Root. It was good, but very competitive. I messed up and went for the quick win with my cats. I couldn't pull it off. Ethan then came back from an untenable position to win with the birds/crows.

BTW, I also saw this and thought of Cam: https://ifelix.net/3d-talisman-board

A long time ago, I gave some thought to pulling together miniatures for all of the talisman characters, but couldn't find matching ones for about 1/2 (and decided that I couldn't paint fast enough to get 60+ miniatures done in a timely manner). It strikes me that it would be a much easier project now (there are quite a few more mini manufacturers and I'm a much faster painter now too).

I love Root!

I have been playing Dayz as my video game escape reality mechanism.  If anybody wants to run with me, let me know!

"Root!" didn't really take off at my house. I thought it looked fun, but it's a bit too competitive for my wife. Settlers of Catan has been making a comeback. It turns out my son's school library has a copy and he sometimes plays it over lunch with his friends.

I've taken a pass at updating my character, here https://ohoh7.atlassian.net/wi...es/1376292/Ezra+Mihn

I also noticed that there is now a bunch of initial skills you get for "free" (stealth, persuasion, etc) at character creation in the Adventure's Edition. I vaguely recall I had to pay points to get those. Should we be getting some "free" skill points too?

To be transparent, the min-maxer in me is intrigued by the Leadership Edges. In particular Tactician and Master Tactician with Natural Leader seem pretty amazing for making the entire party better in fights. So if I can redistribute some skill points to pick up Battle d6 and swap out 2 of my edges (Beast Bond and Common Bond probably (i.e. the 2 I just picked up)), I can pick up Command and Natural Leader. Then I can start to pick up some of the interesting Leadership Edges.

A Year's Catch Up

I tried keep up with Daryl's check in's and appears I forgot around spring last year. Now I feel crumby.

Okay, I'm trying to catchup on all the rules. TBH I'm not great with rules these days so I'll update character as I can figure it out.

I should be up to speed on all the log-ins and bookmarks, though, so minor victories!

Don't feel crumby on my account. I just pop in here periodically to wax lyrically on random topics. I also have a blog that no one but me ever reads. I'm used to talking to myself. :-)

When are we starting up again?

A Year's Catch Up

Under Your Account -> Preferences on the right there's a place to get Atom/RSS/RDF feeds.

You can plug those into a news reader and it will show up ... but the minus side is you now need to check a news reader (something like feedly). I'm not sure that's much help (unless you are using a reader semi-regularly already).

Although this page also has a number of ways to track an rss feed (minus the news reader):
https://www.quora.com/How-do-I...-feeds-into-my-email

The Google chrome one looks promising (assuming you use chrome). I might install it and see where that goes.

A Year's Catch Up

I played around with those but in the end opted to just put a daily weekday reminder to check on rpol.  :)
Sometimes, simplest is best. It doesn't help if someone posts a Kassidy-needs-to-reply entry, but at least you all know I should be no more than 23 hours and 55 minutes later.

That being said, I like the Google Chrome one and may end up using it for other things.
