Places in the Neighborhood

Pelori High School

The social scene for the characters is centered on a Pelori High School in Night City located just south of Japan Town and East Park.  The neighborhood is stubbornly trying to remain middle class and because of its location just about manages.  South of the school the neighborhoods get more dangerous, eventually blending into the Combat Zone.  North is Japan Town which becomes more affluent the farther North you go.  To the West is the University District, though mostly student ghettos on the South side of the U proper, and to the East J-Town merges and blends with Little China.

All of the principal characters (PC or NPC) go to Pelori, or dropped out of there, etc.  Whatever the situation or however often they actually attend classes, that is the center of gravity.

The Obelisk Club

The Obelisk is a night club catering to the juvie scene; that is, they welcome the under 20 crowd and try hard to attract that demographic by trying to stay 'shiv.'  It is on the corner of Effinger Avenue and 26th street, a few blocks south of Japan Town and about three blocks east of Pelori High School.  The original décor is Gothic industrial, but it was retrofitted with virtuality nodes.  The club owners designed ten different themes for the club, and they run a poll every evening for the next evening’s theme selection.  The only rule is it must be different.  The club does not turn away older patrons and maintains a stock of alcoholic beverages.  It is said that if you know the daily pass-code you can get an alcoholic drink regardless of age.

In layout, the club is in four quadrants:  There are two main entrances; the North one opens into a restaurant with booths and tables.  The restaurant (NE quadrant) is separated from the bar/club by a dividing wall with an inner door.  It opens into one side of the bar (SE quadrant) with regular round tables and a billiards table.  This section also has the night club main entrance with the coat check, etc.  The next area is the club proper, the other side of the bar with more tables of the high bar-type (SW quadrant), and the dance floor (NW quadrant) with a stage for live music.

Places in the Neighborhood

Like many urban mallplexes in the United States, the New Harbor Mallplex began life as a heavily secured shopping mall set around a core, or magnet store (in this case, the national Shop-Mart chain) and was constructed on the ruins of a previous shopping center vacated during the Collapse. By 2011, the Mall held almost a two dozen varied stores, as well as a small business office tower added in 2012. It was only a minor step for the Mall's corporate owners to add in several levels of residential conapts and suites for its employees, culminating in the final micro-arcology of today.

Make no mistake; the New Harbor Mallplex is huge almost five thousand people live packed into its labyrinthine corridors. Its residential areas now extend deep into the muddy bay bottom surrounding eastern Night City, as well as in two towering levels above the three level public-access shopping mall. The Mallplex has its own food stores, rec-complexes, fire stations, power generators, private police force and broadcast stations. It is a city within a City, self contained and increasingly isolated from the outside by its fortress mentality.

Each level and area of the Mallplex is dedicated to a specific purpose; no space is wasted. Security is amazingly complex and tight, with every square inch covered by cameras and sensors. Mallplex cops are the next best thing to Nazi stormtroopers. Passcards are required just to get from the public areas to the residential sectors; a lost or stolen card carries a 1000 eb fine or potential eviction from the Mallplex.

The Mallplex is broken into eight areas; Living Areas Alpha, Beta and Gamma (containing conapts, schools and ser.'ices), the Business Tower (with rental space for businesses usually connected to the Mall in some way), the Administration Complex (with Police, Fire and Administrative Services), the Magnet Store (Shop-Mart) and the Main Shopping Concourse (what most people see of the Mall.)

Shop-Mart:  This is the magnet store for the New Harbor Mall complex. The upper two levels are an immense discount store, featuring housewares,. cheap furniture, tools, books & CD's, inexpensive personal electronics, everyday clothing for mallplexers on a budget, cosmetics, a drug store, a soda fountain and small cafeteria. The lower, ground level, is a large supermarket divided into three sections: Lifestyles (with expensive pre-pack for upscale mallplexers and beavers), American Values (cheaper pre-pack and bulk foods for what used to be called the "blue collar" class), and Generics (kibble, human-chow, soymeat-in-a-can and other bulk foods one step above dog food).

The New Harbor mallplex

The Shopping Concourse is three levels, and altitude often equals expense.  Usually, the higher up in the mall, the more expensive the stores and the more exclusive or designer the products. There are exceptions, of course.

Some sample stores on Level 1:

Darrow is the place to go if you want to be a well dressed juvieganger. Decent clothing at reasonable prices, with a fanatical following among Night City's teenage set.

If you're looking for inexpensive fashionware in the newest styles, Parts N' Programms has it all. Need any chipped boosterware? They'll beat any price in town

Other fashion stores:  Dignity, a British store offering mid-to-high end; Bastion Swimwear; MaxiWear, interchangeable leisurewear; Rapture Fashion Concepts, when price is no object; Action Jackets, armored clothes.

Outdoor Sports Emporium is on the second floor, as are the stores listed in the CyberGen equipment section, inclduing Hot 'Za at the entrance to the food court.

Otherwise, use listings from the Night City Sourcebook if you are interested in shopping.
