Hi all

Nice to be in a soulbound group :)

Although all the character archetypes are great I have to admit I have a big soft spot for Kurnoth Hunters and would love to play one if a game comes out of all this chat

Eight points would it be possible to have a character creation thread I'd love to show you all the Kurnoth Hunter I created

Hey there.

I'm pretty flexible when it comes to what I'd like to play and would be quite happy to adjust to whatever suits our third person (or more besides) so we have a more varied cast. At present I'm leaning towards one of the Black Ark Corsair and Isharann Tidecaster, probably favouring the Corsair but they're both equally interesting.

Sure thing.  I tend to like to dig deep at characters but honestly, I'm a bit of a klutz at mechaniky things.  As a GM I tend to be player centric, so I'm probably way more lenient than most.  But sometimes I miss when I need to give player cues.

Quick question on how you read the following talent for a Kurnoth Hunter

Ancestorial Memories:
You can draw upon the memories and experiences of your Sylvaneth ancestors and learn from them. When you complete a Rest, you gain Training (1) or Focus (1) in one Skill of your choice, or increase your Training or Focus in a Skill you already have by 1, to a maximum of 3. You retain this benefit until you finish a Rest, at which point you can choose a new Skill or keep the Skill you already have.

does this mean that if I take a rest I can choose a skill or focus learned from my ancestors and keep that until my next rest where I can either keep it or after that rest choose another skill / focus?

so for example I chose lore because it might become handy in the next part of the adventure so I get lore trained at 1 until I rest again at that point I can either keep lore until the next rest or change it for say Might trained 1 going forward?

I think you have it right. You will always have +1 training or +1 focus floating somewhere and it takes a rest to have the character meditate-y enough so that you can switch it. A very handy way to push a skill with 2 training all the way to the limit, for example =D.

Thanks, Thorfred. Now I only have the challenge ahead of me of actually realising it and making all that mean something XD

As for putting your to shame, Jamat, I really wouldn't worry about that. The vast majority of what I've written there is unlikely to be immediately relevant unless we're adventuring in a specific corner of Ghur, and it's no promise that I'll find my feet actually playing my character faster than you might. At the end of the day it's all really just a bunch of anecdotes to throw as fit the situation. So long as you know what you want from your character there's nothing stopping you from just coming up with that sort of thing on the fly.

Thank you all of you.
I'm beginning to see how I can give all your characters a reason to be at this investigation, even if this does still amount to "someone took you aside and told you to do it" ;)

Something for all of you to consider now:

How much do you know about each other; and how long have you been a Binding for?

Is this your first outing together (for mechanical purposes yes)  but you may have had some other tasks previously.

What were the circumstances surrounding your binding?

I haven't got any particular preference when it comes to how long our characters have known one another. Obviously with this Binding being on the smaller side you'd expect them to be fairly familiar if they've been working together for a little while, although I'm sure they'd still have more than their fair share of secrets. I suppose one benefit of having them know each other before we start play is that we can perhaps smooth over some of the potential coldness and antagonism. They're less likely to be at each others' throat when there's already some respect in play.

Part of me kinda likes the idea that this isn't our first notable task, but at the same time I'm in no way wedded to that idea.

I'm honestly not sure I understand the last question. Sorry.

OOC: Discussion

I feel like the big question here is just what kind of wizard you want Eris to be. We've already expressed a mutual interest in wanting this game to be more than just combat, and "practical battle magic" could easily mean a focus of any one of dealing damage, buffing allies, and debilitating enemies rather than an even distribution. Your four choices need to reflect who she is as a character to some extent.

If we assume you're going to take Healing Glow and some kind of non-combat utility (so you have something relevant to exploration/social stuff) then that leaves you with two choices*. By the look of things at least one of those is going to be a debuff, so for the other one you'll want to decide whether you want a second debuff, a buff for allies, or a second damaging spell of some kind.

So how does Eris apply her battle magic in combat:
  • Does she use her power to obliterate key targets?
  • Does she rally her comrades and empower them to overcome threats?
  • Does she control the field and rob the enemy of their strength?
I'm not saying you have to think about things this way, but I think a Battlemage's approach to their discipline has to say more than a little about their personality. How do you see her carrying herself in a fight?

*Obviously you could always take three combat spells. Nothing's stopping you.

I always appreciate some kind of frame of reference, when thinking things like that. DPS, buffer, debuffs? Hard.

I do not think Eris as someone who just destroys her enemies. I think she is more about overpowering them as well as protecting those she cares about. I will most likely get fly, that is of such utility that I almost have to.

I also took Tactician, which is actually the most efficient damage "spell" I have, for it gives an extra attack to either one of you WITH a whooping +4 dice. A lot better than anything Eris could manage by herself. To maximize the usefulness of Tactician, I will most likely take some kind of buffing spell. There are just so many options... A spell upping one character's melee by 2 or even 3 is completely doable. Perhaps even upping it 2 for the entire team in right circumstances. A light guiding the minds of the affected, a clarity like they have never felt.

Another buff I have eyed with utmost interest would be one that imbues the weapons of the team with magic, ignoring any armor the opposition might have. Ignoring even 2 points of armor is the equivalent of rolling 4 more dice in even situation, with 3 points of ignored armor the "bonus" is raised to 6 dice.

Now for the last slot, which I am considering for a debuff. I am torn between Aetheric net or some such providing "Restrained" (though "blinded" would also be of great use) AND the delicious option to get something with "Stunning". The last option would be her ultimate boss debilitating  ability, because stunning prevents the stronger opponents from using mettle.

You see my brainlock =D?

EDIT: Stunning will prevent enemies from using mettle to take additional actions. They can still double training/focus etc.

I feel like I would be more inclined to play it safe and go with Restrained. It's more universally applicable and we don't know how often we'll be facing Champions or Chosen.

I'll let you worry over the intensity of buffs required. I just stab things, no thinking required >:3

So does anyone know where in the book is the state for the great now listed in the morning hunters equipment list.

On the ranges weapons table they have a great crossbow and a bow but not a great bow.....I would have thought a great bow in the hands of a 9ft tree person would cause a little more damage than a normal bow

After all a great sword does one more point of damage than a normal sword

It's not exhaustive, but mostly the classification is written in parentheses next to it. So RAW, the greatbow is just a bow. Maybe more weapons will be added later as they need more distinct types.

Technically, I agree, but then they would need listings for all the racial staffs which are "just" quarterstaffs. It maybe a deliberate oversight because unless a character is specifically built, (Trade Prince or whatever the class is)  the Hunter is the only class in the book that uses a bow. It may also be a distinction to help the GM if mobs are armed with bows and they can't find the class. The equipment element across the archetypes is a bit more inconsistent than other areas. I'll have to see how it pans out overall, but I'm open to adjusting it.

I have a post mostly done but there are two things I'd like to check:
  1. Do we definitely know we're getting transport or are we waiting in hope for it (i.e. we've met with people on-site vs there's a prior arrangement we expect to be met and it could fail to turn up)?
  2. What 'structure,' for lack of a better way of putting it, should blank canvas interactions take? Is it okay to flesh out characters and details (i.e. Nirva's got to know a member of Alberich's retinue on the journey and specifically engages them, with me providing a name and scant details), or should we be working in broad strokes when not talking to established characters (i.e. Nirva approaches the group and poses an open question) or directly expressing our intentions OOC for you to follow up on?

I'm sorry that last one is a really overthink-y question, but that's just where my head goes when I'm a bit uncertain.

Update: I have a full post prepped for the world where we're not sure when to expect the coaches and I can toss out an NPC, but I have absolutely no issue with adapting if someone else is more confident and wants to post first. Don't feel you need to wait for me if you're in a position to get the ball rolling.

Go ahead with some characters and details but if you're looking for something specific, like  Fyreslayer or someone more outlandish, run it by me first ^^

I updated the character, adding a spell from the book and created one of my own. Eris really seems to form as a practical battlemage in my mind, one who is not stranger to the clash of battle and all the gruesome visages it has to offer. I also added a description to the character, hopefully I did not go totally overboard as I tend to get carried away sometimes.

BTW GM, could you add a character sheet to Eris, so that I can copy the mechanical bits and pieces there. I would also appreciate if you would be willing to add the "Lightweaver" as Eris' last name. More aesthetic in my eyes, when I read it from the left side of the posts =D.

The new book contains:
  • Four new Archetypes for the Lumineth (Alarith Stoneguard, Alarith Stonemage, Scinari Cathallar, Vanari Warrior)
  • One additional new Archetype for everyone except the Free Peoples (Khainite Shadowstalker, Grimwrath Berzerker, Isharann Soulrender, Aethric Navigator, Knight-Zephyros, Spite Revenant)
  • Unique rules for different subfactions within the factions - essentially a trait representing your place of origin, with a bonus talent or 2xp of skills as an alternative.
  • A huge number of new talents, with many of them helping you further define your character's playstyle. Quite a few have higher attribute or training and focus requirements than those in the core book.
  • New Miracles and Spells for all the factions (including a Teclis-themed set of both)
  • A rather small section of new equipment
  • Around forty new Endeavors
  • Expanded rules for allies and contacts
  • and a pre-gen Binding for getting people straight into games.

There's also some nice fluffy things like a section meant to help hash out which deity sanctioned the creation of the PCs' Binding and why, as well as faction-specific tables with suggestions for short and long term goals. One other thing I really liked was the table you can roll on to develop reforging side-effects for Stormcast characters. There's just a lot of good stuff.

I've kept wanting to look in here but it's just been too hard to face. Any plans I've made have tended to fall apart in short order.

I definitely still want to be involved in this and I'm going to do my best to get a post up later on today. No promises though sadly :(

This is supposed to be a slow burner anyway. I know what depression can do to you and it is always worse when combined with other issues. You do you Nirva, at least I will be hanging around here.

Yeah no rush the game will find its own pace and will move with the eb and flow of all our real life issues.

You take the time you need I'll still be here when you get back

Okay things went really crazy and I'm sorry I've been incommunicado for a month. Slightly more settled than I was and a high possibility of a job in the near future. Hooray!  I'll try and recentre with Soulbound and hopefully I can get the wheels turning again if you are all still here listening.

Thank you for your patience and best of luck.

OOC: Discussion

Dear players.
I am still job hunting and things are looking positive for the future. At the same time, I have definitely not given this game the attention it deserved so I have reluctantly decided that the best thing is to close the game.

I really appreciate you all taking the time to make characters, and put up with my quirks.

For the interested: The circle would go up against a beastherd corrupting the wilds. I was torn between this or a failing Sylvaneth grove.

At the end you would face a (potentially lore breaking) reluctant dragon Ogor shaggoth. And it would have been your choice whether to leave him be, or kill him.

Ultimately, I still feel that closing the game is the best thing to do, and it actually hurts to write this.

At the end of next week, I will delete the game.

Thank you again, and I hope to meet up with you all again, maybe as a player, instead of a not very effective GM. Best wishes to you all

Thanks for getting back in touch with us to provide a bit of closure. It's definitely interesting to see what your plans were.

Glad to hear things are looking up on your end, and I hope they work out for you :)
