GM: Visiting Tylwyth

This is a thread for the sole purpose of practicing the system on 3 characters I have created and advancing them for my own enjoyment.  If you have the issue of Dungeon Magazine #77 from Nov/Dec 1999, Vol.XIII No.5, you can follow along.  I'm sure I'll be embellishing.

Eli Oakroot - Fighter: Closest to the core book.
Hatter Redbender - Mage: Using core book with some deviation to create a more unique casting experience, hopefully
Wythmyre - Elf Artist: starting with Elf archetype from core book, but making up the artist and using elements of Keyforge for items.

GM: Visiting Tylwyth

Hatter Redbender is settling into his house in Northbank.  The formally haunted house proves to be a better living quarters than the other empty house in town.  Varni, local resident and hometown hero, is more in charge of the house than him and he really only needs it to sleep when he is not at the wizards tower studying in the enchantment room.  Varni is more well liked in town as the townsfolk associate their recent troubles with Hatter's arrival.

Varni is also more celebrated as it turns out she had been stalking goblins as a tiger in old Northbank and was able to clean up the goblin troubles soon after the issue with the undead wizard was satisfied.  Hatter sent for his friend Eli in the hopes that Eli would have someplace interesting for him to go other than Northbank.  Eli arrives with a companion, a young elf (or rather, young for an elf, still older than either of them), going by the name of Wythmyre.

Eli, seemingly at home no matter where he goes, sits at the table in the dining room and props his feet up on the edge of the table, "Hatter! Wythmyre.  Wythmyre, Hatter.  Wythmyre needs an escort to a clansman who does magical statues."

He sees Varni giving him the stinkeye about his feet, but only winks in return.

Varni walks behind Eli and kicks the chair out from under him.  (1 Wound).  "I told you to be respectful of my home."  Varni lets some of the inner Were-tiger come out and bares fangs and claws.

Hatter takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly counting down from five.  "Wythmyre.  You've suffered with my friend this far, please."  He gestures to a chair at the table, waiting for her to sit before sitting himself.  "Clansman and magical sculptures?"

Wythmyre watches Eli eye Varni as he stands and sets his chair up and sits with his feet outstretched on the floor.  "It's not been that bad, he has many tales," Wythmyre states sitting.

"My Uncle Tylwyth, we are both of Clan Teg.  As part of one of my clan's many rites of passage I am to go to him and learn some of the history of the clan.  He lives in the Anderida Forest southeast of here.  I know the way but the forest can sometimes get dangerous and I didn't want to make the journey alone.  He is a master woodcarver, though his sculptures are not magical to my knowledge, only appear so."  Wythmyre is excited to tell of her journey especially to the mage that Eli spoke so highly of.

"A woodcarver, huh," Hatter scratches as his chin wondering if he could get some pointers on sculpture.  "You've traveled a ways today, it'll be dark soon.  You should rest this evening, and tomorrow morning we can head out.  The name Tylwyth sounds familiar.  I'm fairly certain that Kendrick has some of his sculptures and Dar would surely have mentioned him.  Dar has an interest in anyone with above average skills."  Hatter looked at Eli and raised an eyebrow.

"That means eating," Eli said.  Eli was about to order food from Varni but closed his mouth as she slowly looked at him with cold daggers.  "Local tavern any good?"

"I served me well the first week I was here.  We can cut behind the supply store and it's right across the road."

GM: Visiting Tylwyth

After a meal and a good night's rest, Eli, Hatter, and Wythmyre were on the road.  Varni declined to journey with them, but instead wished to clean up Norada's place some more and journey to the Teg elves to see if an herbalist or alchemist would want to migrate to Northbank.

Anderida Forest was a couple of days journey where Wythmyre met with another large group of elves also considered Clan Teg.  From there Wythmyre found the path she remembered and walked with Eli and Hatter to the edge of the Anderida Forest to the Dymfedd where the atmosphere changed considerably.

The Dymfedd was far more overgown and ominous.  A palpable humidity was in the air and stones glistened with moisture and drips of water, or at least you think it was water, patted onto the ground and foliage from above.  Some of the trees had fallen and along the fallen giants, a thick glistening soft mat of lichen had grown.  Wythmyre navigated over some of these fallen giants and around others following the subtle signs of a path.

After crossing over another lichen covered stone into a small clearing of only about fifteen feet diameter it sudenly felt as though they were being watched.  Straining to see into the underbrush, you see a nut-brown, beady-eyed face peering at you.  It's near a tree outside of the small clearing in the thick vegetation.

Hatter steps back behind Eli and pulls a pair of rough rusty keys from his belt pouch, "Let's not be too threatening.  Maybe it's just an animal that is going to run on its own."  Eli looks to Wythmyre to see if she has any insight into the creatures of this jungle.

Wythmyre compels the plants to part and reveal the creature in front of them that looks on with interest.  She spreads her hands in front of her directing her energy to the plants along the way.

Eli ducks and weaves his head and body trying to get a clear view through the foliage, but cannot tell what it is.  Even when Wythmyre parts all plants to either the left or right revealing the thing for what it is.

"It's hanging off the side of the tree," Hatter notices as they edge closer.  The thing does not move at all as it seems to stare them down.  As they get closer, Wythmyre recogized it for what it is, one of uncle Tylwyth's scultures.

"Uncle Tylwyth made it!" she says.  "It's one of his sculptures.  In this case, carved right from the tree itself.  A little old gnome."

Eli puts his sword away and pokes the sculpture in the nose with his finger.  Hatter drops his keys back into his pouch and Wythmyre picks up the trail once again.

Now that the party is aware of Tylwyth's subtle sculptures, they find them everywhere.  Finding them and pointing them out becomes quite the game between the three of them with the real challenge between Wythmyre and Eli.

"There!  There!  I found one!" Hatter calls out before the other two pointing at one large crude sculpture.  While many of the sculptures had some grotesque and odd quality about them all, Wythmyre refrained from many comments.

"That is," Mythmyre giggled, "Not one of Uncle Tylwyth's finer ones."

Then the sculpture opens its eyes, "HOOO, HOOOOM, WHOOOO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE, BONE BAG?"

Wythmyre gives the others space.  She did not want to fight any creatures of the forest and she also knew that Uncle Tylwyth had friends.  Perhaps the Treant was friendly and they'd only offended it slightly.  Treant's were normally difficult to offend regardless.

"Apologies accepted.  Though I'm not much surprised.  And you should put that sharp thing away lest you hurt my bluebird nest.  Then I would be quite wroth.  Tylwyth came and had a nice chat a number of days ago.  Tell me what you think though; should a warm wet soil be used for producing more worms or a cool dry?  Or maybe you'd know more about the robins this time of year.  I say a batch fly eastward six days ago and I thought it should be more northerly if only such."  The treant was careful not to make any sudden movements as a bluebird flitted into his upper branches.

"Put that away, Eli," Hatter stepped close to the treant to study its face a little closer.  It seemed to study him back.  "What did Tylwyth say?  About the soil that is?  I may or may not agree with him.  I should like to discuss it with him and then come back with a more informed opinion.  Where could I find him to question about the soil?"

Wythmyre caught on immediately to Hatter's ploy and tried to join in, "Agreed, Hatter.  In fact if Mr. Treant should be so kind to inform us, then maybe we could fetch Tylwyth and come back to talk about soils and robins."  Wythmyre felt a little embarrassed about her comment and wanted to make it up to one who was clearly Uncle's neighbor.

Eli reluctantly put away his sword.  He wasn't sure what Hatter and the elf were going on about, but he didn't want to hang around a tree and talk about birds and dirt.  He hoped that this uncle had a fine wine or something that he could stay home with while the others blabbed about nature.  He was along for the job of delivering a person to a destination.  That and Hatter asked him to come and fight a magical staff he was working on.  He wasn't one to turn down an easy fight.

"Oh, call me Gnarlybough.  Indeed!  Indeed!  Bring back Tylwyth so we can talk about the soil issue.  He was on the side of Warm and wet and I did want him to clarify further.  Along with that, we were also talking about the mating seasons of the Anderida Purple Moths.  That's a most fascinating species that I've seen come through here three times in the pat decade.  How wonderful they are when there are a little cluster of them flitting along.  If you continue along the path over there, you won't be far from the Tylwyth's Grove."

Hatter and Wythmyre thank Gnarlybough for his assistance and quietly argue between themselves about purple moths until they are out of earshot.  They continue along through the thick of trees along the thin path until the line of trees suddenly seems to thin and a wonderful vista unfolds.  A gigantic, ancient oak on the banks of a like spreads its branches over a fantastic sculpture garden.  The oak has been made into an elven house.  Windows pierce the trunk, while balconies and walkways decorate the upper branches.  A shed nestled behind the tree houses goats and chickens.  Entering the clearing, you see heroic statues, bizarre topiaries, lifelike animals and sylvan creatures, birdbaths, fountains, sundials, bridges, gazebos, wind chimes, and mobiles.  Chickens wander around the garden, and ducks paddle along the edge of the lake.
