Ehri lived in a small, uninteresting house on a rather large lot (in comparison) full of weeds and small shrubs.  It was easy to overlook, and not terribly well-maintained... on the outside.

Inside, it was cozier, and better-maintained, but didn't look like much... but then they went down to the basement.

Down underneath the house, it was clear why the lot was so large.  The basement was huge!  Crammed full of equipment, machine tools, computers, computer parts, strange devices, and a seemingly endless supply of various kinds of mechanical and robotic hands.  Strange lights flickered on as Ehri entered, and some kind of light, upbeat instrumental music began playing.

As she entered, her appearance changed-- her clothing altered, becoming a lab coat, her glasses, never needed, disappearing, and her skin altering to become its true natural light blue tone.

"Here we are," she said.  "Umuru, would you mind getting up on the table there?  I'd like to scan you for signs of damage or needed maintenance.  You were in a hole in a church for a long time.  Dan, you might as well go on and ask questions."

"So, you're really blue?" Dan said. "That is...unexpected..."

Umuru climbed up on the table and laid down.

"Yes, I am," said Ehri.  "My blood uses hemocyanin instead of hemoglobin for oxygen transport. The majority of sapient species in this galaxy are roughly humanoid, but with various variations, such as skin color, horns, antennae or tails."

She began to scan Umuru carefully.  An army of floating hands had gathered around her, and were assisting her, manipulating controls, handing her tools, and so on.

"...well, there are a few minor issues," she said after a bit, "but you appear to be a very healthy young demon, Umuru.  As nearly as I can tell, anyway.  How do you feel?  Do your internal diagnostics show anything I should look for?"

"No," Umuru said. "I am feeling conflicted and strange. I am not used to having conversations or being around others that want me around. Even knowing I am defective.  I am interested in this Earthling named Dan and learning more about this world and its customs."

There was a loud gasp from Dan.

"...I see," said Ehri.  "Well, I suppose that's understandable.  Being curious about things, I mean..."

She looked over the scans again.

"I don't think you're defective in any way," she said.  "Well, I suppose the killing issue might matter for some purposes, but I don't know that it's likely to matter here.  And I'm sure we can both help you understand this culture.  Luckily, we're in a part of it that has unusual things happen on a fairly regular basis, so it should be easier for you to fit in."

"Will it? The locals do not have tails," Umuru said.

"That part will be more challenging, but we may be able to find a solution," said Ehri.  "Hiding it under clothing, perhaps, or wrapping it around your waist.  You'll need local clothing, but I can arrange that.  And you can stay with me, of course.  Do you need any kind of food or other fuel?"

"No, but I enjoy eating as a hobby," Urumu said.

Ehri nodded.

"All right," she said.  "That's fine.  I keep plenty of food on hand.  Do you have any other requirements?  Sleep?  Entertainment?"

"What is entertainment like on this planet?" Umuru asked.

"There's various kinds," said Ehri.  "Music, for example.  Visual performances of stories in various lengths.  Books.  Dances.  Nothing that directly inputs into senses, though, or in three dimensions-- it's all on screens or live performances.  Well, aside from participatory entertainment like dances or social events."

Dan, doubtlessly, would be eager to show her some, but she'd let him say that himself.  Ehri was still trying to get her own feelings on the issue sorted out.

"Do you wish to perform more tests? I am happy to comply as thanks," Umuru said.

"Well, if you don't mind..." said Ehri.  She caused some very large hands to emerge to test strength, power output, and so on.

The strength tests resulted in an average strength score as being able to lift 406.419 metric tons, destructive energy output was impressively high (Not much on Earth could produce it or stand up to it).

Then Umuru began to undress for the full body scans. Dan, had some blood trickle out of nose and turned away. (With the occasional peak).

Ehri found herself pausing occasionally.  And saving images, but she was going to do that for perfectly logical, plausible, scientific reasons.

But the scientific research was important, too.

"Well, Umuru," she said, "I must say, your engineering is excellent.  There's room to fine-tune your design in the future, if you like-- adding some versatility to your weapons settings and the like-- but you're a well put-together cyborg.  I'm impressed, and I assure you, I don't say that lightly."

"Thank you?" Umuru said, confused.

"Pleasure was all ours, really," Dan said.
