Hi, Dave. I got your email. Thanks for the add. I know you don't particularly want special ops characters in the game so I've put together a fire support specialist with an interesting background.

Lance Sergeant Robert "Kiwi Bob" Carter, a STA gunner-observer, member of the Honourable Artillery Company in the Territorial Army reserves, civilian employment as a part-time employee of the education department at the Victoria and Albert Museum, while working on his PhD. Born and raised in New Zealand, but now resident in London.

Sounds good. Fire support specialist with... ISTAR and signals/radio skills?

I see where you're going with the HAC. I think I can fit that character into the game. Do you want to go it alone or do you want me to add a NPC from the same unit at the start of the game? I can't promise they'll survive, but... the offer's there:)

Re: Character Proposals and Character Creation Chat

G'day,

John Rowe here.  I'm looking to play.

I have a Sergeant John Henry Bookman, Territorial Army.

Bookman is 37 years old.  Born 29 October 1963.

Originally with 3(V) Military Intelligence Battalion, he was mobilised in late 95 or early 96 and posted to Joint Services Intelligence Office in Bielefeld and from there to 71 Int Stn, 1st UK Armoured Division or wherever the GM wants me.

He worked at Defence Intelligence, Ministry of Defence, in civilian life.

He is a specialist on Soviet Operational Art and recently wrote a monograph on the adaptions and variances to Soviet operational doctrine in Afghanistan.  He's also written a number of briefing pamphlets on the Soviet Army for the Army.

Bookman speaks fluent Russian and German, though he is NOT a trained interrogator.

I have a full character 'sheet' which actually runs to about 35 pages.  Both character and player are a little OCD...

Re: Character Proposals and Character Creation Chat

So what I'd like to know now is:

Are wearing our Noddy suits?

and: What kind of gat do I have?  Does it have to be an L85A1 or could I get away with an L1A1 or a Sterling? I am a Territorial after all...  :)

How do you insert emojis in these messages?

71 Intelligence Section will be your parent unit at the beginning of the game, but you'll be assigned to 12 Armoured Brigade for operational purposes.

I'm going to assign a junior NCO as a NPC at the start of the game. Also a Land Rover Series III Lightweight (1/2 ton) GS with soft top, last production model (1984) so 12 years old with some significant mileage. Feel free to throw bergens and camera cases and jerrycans into the back.

Ok.  You did mention two blokes and a FFR.  Has that changed?  I've got a couple of pages of shit for the land rover, including a trailer and an extendable tent for the landy itself.  If we've got radios we can set up a radio watch.  OTOH, if there's just the two of us at Bde HQ I'm guessing we lump in with them.  What sort of an Int Shop does a British Brigade have?

Plus, do you have a map of the 'British I Corps operational area' you mention on the daily background posts, plus a notional projection of that area into Pact space?

Yeah, I don't know why I put a lightweight GS. I think I copied & pasted the wrong one from my list of vehicles for the PRG. Your own vehicle should be a Land Rover Series III 109 FFR. The radio shelf in the back will have a Clansman PRC-321 HF radio and a Clansman PRC-353 VHF radio. The vehicle has a Sankey 2 wheel GS trailer (3/4 ton).

I'm going to start you with one NPC - probably a young freshly trained Int Corps Corporal. When the company group reaches it's "good luck, you're on your own" moment,  who knows how many NPCs and vehicles will survive.

12 Armoured Brigade has its own intel shop: 712 Intelligence Section. During the TTW period, the section is brought up to wartime strength with recalled reservists and TA attachments. Overall it's 1 lieutenant, 1 staff sergeant, 5 sergeants, 5 corporals, and 2 lance corporals.

Well, I sat down to work on equipment and gear, but I spent at least an hour learning about the history of Baker Rifle armed rifle-green jacket wearing soldiers operating in small groups, in comparison with red-coat wearing musket-armed infantry operating in massed formations.

Re: Character Proposals and Character Creation Chat

Ok, I'm slowly working on gear and this is not complete, but I wanted to check on a few things:

1) Is this an OK format or do you prefer something different?
2) Do you want Fatigues & Parka broken out any more than this?
3) Does the L85A1 weight includes sling and cleaning kit?
4) Between v1.0, v2.2, and Paul's site, is there an order of preference for weights?  For example, v1.0/2.2 lists a 30-rd 5.56mm magazine at 0.5 kg, Paul has it at 0.55.

I'm still researching what Gas Mask, NVGs (I found some stuff about L4A2 - maybe?), and Body Armor (a good friend gave me a resource to help with some of these!) were in issue during the period, so if anyone has specifics on those, that would help me out.

Unless the Ref prefers something different, I typically I will use the 1.0/2.2 book weights for gear, unless other, lower weights are found.  Since the rules for character strength and encumbrance were likely balanced by the designers with the gear weights, some of which are a bit off (Kevlar helmets for 0.5 kg, radios, NVGs, for example), I try to stick to the book weights for kit available in the base game.  Of course some stuff you have to get from Paul's site or Internet resources.  For example, Entrenching tools rarely appear in the TW2K rules, but they are staple for many in combat arms.

Thanks in advance!

If you decide to add a NPC from the same unit that would be acceptable. If there are two of us that should give us a good chance of qualifying for a Land Rover. Can we get the lightweight 90? It doesn't necessarily need to be fitted for radio, because I'd prefer to have a manpack we can bail out and move with. Whoever you create as a NPC should have a high WVD skill and not be afraid of driving like a bat out of hell.

For personal weapon I'm thinking of selecting a trusty L42A1 sniper rifle. I think I might want a backup weapon for when a sniper's rifle isn't appropriate, but I don't want a handgun. Does it make sense to spend some of my equipment allowance on a L2A3 Sterling? I'm also thinking of adding a L32A1 shotgun to the mix. Is that too many weapons? The shotgun would be a shared item between my PC and the NPC.

What ever equipment you want, you can have, bearing in mind that if you have to bail out of your vehicle you're the one who has to carry it.
