Fort Triumph.

Glenmark Hedgewood has a different idea- a contact he knows, from years ago, who knows the neighborhood better than he does.

A contact who got out of that neighborhood years ago, in a manner similar to Glenmark's escape:  by taking up life in the service of the crown.

But not as a constable, because they didn't exist back then.  As a soldier.

Fort Triumph is located at the mouth of Aux River, where it meets the seaway.  It has a commanding view.  It's position is well chosen- not only to see, but to be seen.  It was decided, years ago, that it would make a very good impression if the first thing a traveler saw when approaching Auxene was an imposing fortress full of soldiers.  It was a way of letting people known Pomera was serious about defending itself.

Of course, for the most part using soldiers to solve crimes and apprehend criminals didn't work well, but when it comes to doing the more normal duties of soldiering, there are fewer criticisms.  They regularly protect Auxene from the outside, and this includes frequent patrols through the nearby countryside to keep the soldiers fit and sharp, and repel any raiders... and the constant nuisance of Goblins and their ilk.

As a result, soldiers are often out for extended periods of time.  But when Glenmark arrives and informs the gate guard of his purpose, he is in luck:  the soldier he came to see is here.

The two meet in the armorer's shop, currently not in use.

"S'good to see you, mate. Thanks for taking a few moments to come and have a sit. I don't want to waste your time, mate, so we can go grab a pint to catch up later if you like, but for now it's business."

"You working your way up like you did inspired me to do the same,"
Hedge pointed out the uniform in case it hadn't already been noticed. "Seems there's a group of youngens what's been robbing and stealing from folks down in the harbor market. They wear colors, so I know they ain't just a group of back-watchers, they're organized."

"There's plenty I don't know, I realize. Just saying."

"I think they been hiding out in the old fortswall, yeah? Over on the west side, there. I knew if there was anybody what would know how to get inside there and where the youngens might be hiding out, it's you. Can you tell me, or show me, how to get to the good spots inside?"

"The Old Town wall..."  the soldier thinks back. "Was it supposed to keep the Docks people out of Old Town or the Old Town people out of the Docks?"

It was a bit of a joke, of course- it was originally built for the same reason as all town fortifications are built- to protect the town, or at least the core of it, from invasion.  But the invasion never came, and the town grew faster than construction could adapt, and now the wall runs between two densely populated areas of Pomton.

"Kids go there a lot, especially when they're told they shouldn't."  Bozh switches to a mock Old Lady voice.  "Don't climb the wall, you'll fall down and break your head."

Then he tries to tackle the question.

It's a lot of wall, running all the way along Old Town's west side.  No longer vital for defense, the maintenance is only mediocre.  Enough to keep it from being a public safety hazard.  And to keep it standing, because maybe in the future it really would be needed.  In the mean time, to keep it from falling over, the city engineers make periodic assessments and repair it using mostly conscript labor.

Ergo, part of the problem.  The conscript labor uses some prisoners.  The prisoners often volunteer- hard labor like this takes time off the sentences.  But that also means some ex prisoners return to life on the street after a few years, knowing that wall a lot more intimately than anyone else.

They fix breaks and loose stones, but frequently skip some that "don't look so bad".  These are the gaps the kids use as hiding places.

"The top of the wall, the parapet, that's pretty much a young couple's place these days.
But the parapet walk was built over a strong gallery, an interior walkway running the whole length, with firing ports.  The official doors are all sealed, to be opened if its ever needed for war.  The fun part was finding unofficial ways in.  But that changes year to year, as the crews fix things.  You'll need to walk the wall and scan it with good eyes.
Look for an area where the joints in the stones look dark in a strip from the bottom to the top.  The kids will chisel out some of the mortar in the joints, so they can climb up.
At the top of that, look around, what they do is push a stone in, and put a light wood cover in its place, painted to look like stone.  From the ground level, you'd never know."

Hedge laughed and responded to the jokes in kind. "That's brilliant, mate." Hedge thought back to the kinds of things they used to do like that when they were kids. "Kids always have the best ideas."

When you didn't have years of experience telling you how you should be doing things, your imagination could actually come up with some incredible ideas.

"This new gig seems like a good one, but it's gonna mean having to do things that go against who we was before, yeah? Long as the youngens don't get out of control, I'll keep them safe best I can. I got a job to do, but I know that life like none the rest the constables could. If you hear there's trouble like that, gimme a shout, yeah?"

"Well don't beat the kids up too hard," Bozh DeMoot says.  "They don't all turn out bad in the end.  If you watch out for the them and try to separate the bad from the good, I'll do what I can to help out.  Some of them that's gang members now.. probably they were little ones playing in the streets when I was there."

"Well that's that, innit mate? I 'preciate your help, mate. I need to get back an see how the rest of them is doing, then go and have a looksee at that wall. I wasn't barking about that drink though, I owe you that either way, yeah?"

Hedge made ready to leave, going through the usual rituals of parting ways with old acquaintances.
