The City of Bukhir

A large offshoot of Crane Bay, once known as the Imperial City, Bukhir would be considered a metropolis in its own right if it were located elsewhere. The city was initially planned out ahead of time, with a well spaced and connected core eventually blending into a chaotic mess as growing demand for space outpaced the architects’ plans. The core is primarily the domain of various corporations and the families of lesser executives, whilst the suburbs sprawl out for dozens of miles in all directions, the city is big, and it’s easy to get lost.
The city is nestled in a River valley just to the northwest of Crane Bay, and runs on a combination of hydro-electric and nuclear power, with some small wind turbines set up around the city to take advantage of the constant updraft generated by the city’s waste-heat.

Downtown: Dominated by sleek skyscrapers, small garden spaces, and carefully maintained roads, the surface of Downtown looks like your typical solar-punk work of art; the underground portions honeycomb the ground for a couple hundred meters, containing public transport, maintenance, and utility systems alongside small restaurants and stores that take advantage of the large volume of foot traffic. The tallest structure is the Inogen Arcology Experiment, a mostly self-contained community with enough housing for 10,000 individuals as well as the hydroponics equipment necessary to support them, it’s roughly egg-shaped form dominates the southern quarter of the district. The majority of other buildings are also skyscrapers, with floors divided up between residential and business purposes.

Twen Vale: What was originally a park has now become a densely packed shanty-town, as homeless individuals congregated and eventually settled there. Initially, law enforcement attempted to stop them, but eventually gave up when they just kept returning. The communities that formed eventually gained semi-official recognition from the city and some effort was put into organizing and cataloguing the residents, the better for taxation. Crime is high, but cost of living is quite cheap; most residents have some sort of garden/growing operation, and it’s not uncommon to see officers performing a drug-bust somewhere in the neighborhood.

The Industrial District: Dominated by pharmaceutical plants and end-point manufacturing, not a whole lot special going on, the processes are mostly automated so the streets are often sparsely populated in comparison with the rest of the city. Authorities occasionally sweep through the area in search of black market activity, but rarely turn much up.

Chuhon Bazaar: A lively commercial district, the night markets have gained a reputation for being almost akin to a perpetual carnival, tourists are often found gawking and getting ripped off by the local merchants whilst the natives stick to the less garishly decorated streets and more reasonable prices. Most transactions are done with cash only, the better to avoid taxes, and one may find clandestine deals being made/offered in the darker corners of the district. There are some low-cost residential buildings in the area, for those who can tolerate the perpetual noise of people hawking their wares and arguing about prices. Law enforcement isn’t very welcome here as a local militia-turned-mafiosos has taken to ensuring that business goes smoothly, and nobody scares off the customers.

Bunet Grove: Stretching up along the western slope of the river valley, this medium-density residential area is primarily populated by the upper-middle and low-upper class, every house has a small yard and several stories, being like small towers of metal, glass, and ceramic. Not much happens here, the streets follow the curve of the hills, and trees have been replanted all along them to provide shade and prevent erosion.

Taipal: By far the largest district of the city, Taipal is the urban sprawl that out-paced the growth of the planned sectors, it contains an eclectic mix of homes and businesses with no immediate pattern to their distribution apparent. It stretches out from Bukhir University, and virtually fills the southern half of the valley, a subway system connecting the district to the rest of the city was recently finished, and the subterranean network of Downtown is steadily being reproduced here, but until that time busses are still running on the surface. Crime varies throughout the district, but is mostly concentrated around the poorer areas and their surroundings, whilst the police tend to favor the middle and few upper class areas.

Bukhir University: A top-of-the-line pre-k to college graduate mini-city with it’s own internal districts dedicated to each level of education and housing for out-of-town students. It is located on the other side of the river south of Downtown, being connected by several bridges.

Downtown is situated on the northern coast of the river, The Industrial district down river to the east of Downtown, Cuhon surrounds Downtown's western portion, Bunet Grove stretches from Cuhon upriver to the west, Bukhir University mirrors Downtown on the southern shore, and Taipal surrounds and stretches out for a couple dozen miles in either direction along the river and about 10 miles up to the peak of the valley,Twen Vale is sandwiched between Downtown and the Industrial District.
