Experiment 3: 34 moves, stacking, 9/6

Round 1:
15:39, Today: phantom rolled 5 using 1d34 ((5)). - A Magic Item
15:39, Today: phantom rolled 10 using 2d6 ((5,5)).

It all started with, Zedrax has the bright idea to liberate some items from a travelling merchant.  So we setup and waited, unfortunately for us some bandits assulted the merchant first.  I looked at Zedrax and said "We can't let them take what we were gonna take!  That ain't fair!"  So I charged forward shooting them bandits dead and causing a distraction as Zedrax snuck around.  Zeddy wounded the leader and they retreated.  The Merchant was so happy for our help, he gave me this magic bow, the Blassster.  It never runs out of arrows and allows me to do all kinds of tricks.

Zedrax enjoyed that everyone in the tavern was paying attention to him, the kobold, for once. "Yeah, so this adventure started when me and the big guy here were caught out in the open by beetle-men. We ran to this old abandoned fort nearby and tried defending it against them... We didn't feel too bad about killing 'em, because beetle-men aren't really... intelligent? They aren't people, they're just sort of moving bodies that really get their orders from their queen using magic or mental powers or smell or something. The problem is, beetle-men are still tough to kill! I'd used up all my potions and broken a short sword trying to keep 'em off the tops of the walls, and I got a really painful cut on my tail!"

End of Round 1:
17:07, Today: phantom rolled 32 using 1d34 ((32)). - Negotiating
17:09, Today: phantom rolled 3 using 2d6-1 ((1,3)).

And then I tried to negotiate with the Beetlemen, they all froze.  I'm thinking I got them good.  I look and Zeddy and grin.  I lay down this great tell of how if they let us go, we will give them the fort.  Like it was our to give.  The seem enthralled and I was feeling pretty good.  And just I turn to say something to Zeddy, the whole world is upside down and suddenly the ground crashed into my face.  That hurt like heck!  It turns out we ran INTO their nest.  And their champion just evicted me.  I lost site of Zeddy though.  DustGnoll trying to build up suspense, forgiting that Zeddy is next to him.

09:00, Today: The GM rolled 17 using 1d34 with rolls of 17.
Competing in a contest.
11:59, Today: The GM rolled 10 using 2d6+1 with rolls of 6,3.

"Before us sat the Beetle Queen," said Zedrax to the tavern of listeners. "The queen of that particular hive, anyway. 'It was exciting to see through the eyes of my drones and chase you,' said the queen, 'but now I'm bored again. Let's have one last challenge before you die... Win, and you both go free. What will it be, mmm?'

"'How about a test of strength?' DustGnoll suggested, looking at the scrawny arms on all the drones and their queen.

'Yes, that may prove amusing...' said the queen. 'Here is my champion...' and a big beetle with arms and legs as thick as a good melon stepped out of the shadows. He walked over to a big squarish rock about twice my size, pushed, and pushed... and rolled it over.

Dusty stepped forward, and grabbed it, and heaved... and put it back where it was before... by lifting it.

'You win your freedom,' said the queen. 'But before you leave, there is something of which I wish to speak to you... Something that I think you two may accomplish which I cannot...'"

22:58, Today: phantom rolled 4 using 1d34 ((4)). - Powerful Ritual
22:59, Today: phantom rolled 6 using 2d6 ((1,5)).

Then the Beetle Queen pulled us aside and showed us a book.  I looked over at Zedrax and said, is that what I think it is?  Zeddy looked back at me and said Yes, 'That looks like the Lost Tome of Ebez'.  The Queen confirmed that it was a tome, but that she needed the blood of two righteous defenders to complete a ritual that will restore to life her favorite daughter.  I prepared for a fight.  She said nah, I don't need much, just a few drops.  I nodded and so did Zeddy here.  She brought forth a chalice and had us each cut our hands with an obsidian knife and drop several ounces of blood into it.  Once complete, she returned our stuff and allowed us to leave.  We ran from there as fast as we could.  Minutes later, there was a massive arcane explosion that destroyed the fort and knocked us at least 100 ft.  When I came too, Blassterr, my bow was destroyed.  I found zeddy and he was OK luckily he didn't have any magic on him.  I still have a scar across my back from that explosion.

"We started walking toward the nearest steading, but after less than twenty minutes, a regiment of paladins rode up to us and asked us what that big explosion was that they'd seen and heard from a distance. 'And your answers better be good, boys,' said the armored jerk in charge.

We tried to explain, but they just madder every time they heard things like Beetle Queen and Lost Tome of Ebez and Necromancy and stuff-- especially every time Dusty here tried to help explain. 'That ruined fort was a sacred pilgrimage site to our order-- we go every dozen years,' said the head paladin. 'And you two just helped blow it up? I think you'd better come with us...'"

14:40, Today: phantom rolled 12 using 2d6+2 ((5,5)).

So here are these arrogantly dumb paladins who weren't listening to us. So I dug my heels in, and said "Listen, we were forced to participate in a ritual by the Queen Beetle-thing.  We barely made it out with our lives!  Look at my back! The wound was still fresh.  And to prove it< I Invoke the Right of Divine Combat in the name of AnBas! If I defeat your champion, then we are telling the truth, should we fail, then you know that the God of Death finds us lacking.  The Lead Paladin sighed "Very well mongrels, have it your way" he then gives a wicked smile and dismounts. "I Sir Imperius will be you opponent. And the challenge will be of strength and agility.  The Paladins fan out forming a circle, interestingly no paladin was directly opposite each other.  We found out quickly and they pulled out crossbows.  So, I started to grapple Imperius as the Paladins starting firing, filling the circle with arrows.  I used my strength and agility to dodge and move Imperius into them.  It went on for a few minutes, before I fell back and down throwing Imperius off balance and threw him to the ground.  I then snatched a bolt from the air and slammed it into throat of the Imperius, killing him. In the name of AnBas, we are telling you the truth!  The paladins were shocked, but showed they did have honor and let us go.

Round 4 is up!

"Just then, from the east... came a rumbling noise, like an earthquake getting started, or a tidal wave, or a landslide..." Zedrax looked around the tavern, keeping his audience in suspense. "The horses all got nervous, stamping the ground and letting out the occasional low shriek of fear... and then... We saw what it was... Because it came from beneath the earth... Beetle-men! But with white, dead eyes! Zombie beetle-men! Fast ones! They'd burrowed straight for us, and now they were up above ground to get us! The necromancy must've killed the queen-- and spread its undeath to all her soldiers!

The horses bolted. I grabbed a tail. I don't think the horse even noticed. But I started slipping... I couldn't hold on much longer...

--Dusty grabbed me! He'd been smart and jumped onto the empty horse of the guy he'd killed!

Then I returned the favor by whacking a zombeetle that popped up and jumped at 'im! I got it right in its antenna, which blinded it, since its eyes were useless..."

21:36, Today: phantom rolled 16 using 1d34 ((16)). - Discovering a secret
21:38, Today: phantom rolled 7 using 2d6 ((3,4)).

We fled the Zombie beetlemen, several of the Paladins with us.  We rode hard to a nearby monastary for safety.  The holy ground seems to stop the zombie beetlemen.  But they were quickly surrounding us.  Zeddy and I spoke to the Paladins and the Monks.  The Abbot of the monastery said he was familiar with Ebez and his foul magic.  He showed us a book, Zeddy and I recognized the some of the language. The Abbot said that this book held the key to stopping the zombies, but he couldn't read it.
Zeddy and I took the book and based on what we learned from the Beetle Queen, we were able to start a translation.  We completed it and gave it to the Abbot.  He smiled and gathered the monks and paladins.  He began the ritual.

Dusty looks over the listeners in the tavern, all waiting with bated breath.

Zeddy and I headed for the gate and peered outside.  While the monks and paladins worked their magic.
Pale green lightning began to flash striking the zombie beetlemen, we saw the queen rise to the front, mere 100 ft from the gate.  Glowing green and looking even scarier.  Then the chanting stopped and the day grew as dark as a moonless night.  Then a horrible shreiking came from the monks and paladins followed by a pillar of swirling purple and green light blasts up into the gathered clouds.  Then the same colored lightning rained down blinding us with its intensity.  After a few moments, the storm stopped and our vision cleared.  Outside the zombie beetleman lay destroyed.  We opened the gate and went out to check.  They were all dead, again.

I told Zeddy to ready some horses and I went back to the Monks and Paladins, but they all appeared dead and the abbot was missing.  I checked each one and they were all gone. I grab their coin purses, and ran to Zeddy.  We need to go now!  I mounted and we fled...

Round 5 is yours.
Fyi, unbeknowst to Dusty and Zeddy, the revived Ebez.  That was our failure

"As we rode, we could see a sort of orange-glowing pillar of fire glowing back behind us... slowly following us.

Then it started tossing fireballs at us.

Its aim was terrible... But I realized that there was a reason for that-- the horse we were on had blue-glowing runes on its saddle, magically worked into the leather... it was protecting us from fire.

Unfortunately, the fireballs did set fire to the dry grass on the plains we were riding through... Dusty had to keep trying to slow down and calm the horse down... and every delay meant that that pillar of fire caught up to us a little more..."

20:00, Today: phantom rolled 5 using 1d34 ((5)). - A Magic Item

We were riding hard as we could, but the fire spooked the horses.  I did my best, but the fire, the fireballs and the pillar of fire didn't make it easy.  And the pillar's aim was getting better.  But I noticed that we were coming up to a village and it had a well.  I turned us towards the well and indicated to Zeddy to jump!  We jumped into the well, grabbing the rope as we did.  And it was a good thing to because the magic in the horses' saddles gave out and both were destroyed by fireballs.  I got singed as we ended up in the well.

ROUND SIX (OF SEVEN)

16:36, Today: The GM rolled 30 using 1d34 with rolls of 30.
Defending (advantage and disadvantage cancel each other out)
16:37, Today: The GM rolled 9 using 2d6 with rolls of 5,4.

"A few more fireballs hit near the top of the well, but none flew down to hit me and Dusty. There was a lot of screaming from villagers, but it was all the 'run away!' type of screaming, rather than the 'being killed by magic' type of screaming.

Suddenly, Dusty tossed me up out of the well-- just before the rope broke! I looked down, and there he was, clinging to the stones at the side of the well and working on climbing out.

'What's all this then?!?' yelled a human voice, and I turned and saw that the village constable had rounded up a posse.

'Magic evil thing!' I said, because I was in a hurry. 'Chased us here! Chased me and my gnoll buddy still in the well! Don't know where it went!'

'A kobold and a gnoll, eh? Sounds to me like--'

Then a herd of undead cattle came around the corner of the street-- mostly skeletons.

'It's raised a herd of undead cattle! Stampede!' said Dusty, who'd just gotten his head above the level of the well...

Well, we fought that undead herd as best we could-- Dusty was great at it. One hit from him to an old skeleton and the whole thing crumbled. A lot of the constable's posse got gored or trampled, though... It was all I could do to just survive..."

19:37, Today: phantom rolled 11 using 2d6+1 ((5,5)).

Dusty smiles and nods. "Yeah Zeddy, had a hard time of it.  But we succeeded, Zeddy, me and the Constable."  I was panting for breath and Zeddy and the constable looked half dead. Well, I didn't expect undead cows.  So I guess we know where the magic tornado of death went.  He looks down at one of the skeletal remains and notices that one of the cow skeletons looks like it has a crow. "Hey Zeddy, what was that legend you told me about cows?" I ask as I pick up the skull. Zeddy looks over and is confused for a moment. "Oh, the legend of the Cow King, an Arcane Master who was supposed to be more powerful of Ebaz.  Yeah, he left a warning that should the world be in trouble he would return to defend the pastures of the world.  We need to place that cow head on the right stone marker to open the way to the Cow level."  We look at the Constable "Can you take us to the cow pastures?  Perhaps we can save the world." Zeddy nodded "Yes, Save the Cows, save the world.  That is the name of the legend."

son of a gun, competing in a contest.

"The constable led us to the cow pasture... and the closer we got to it, the more the crown on the skull I was holding began to glow with a bright green light.

When we got to the pasture, we saw that out in the middle of it was an ancient ring of standing stones...

And between us and it was a huge longhorned bull. 'I come at you,' the bull said. 'Stop me, or lose all.'

And it charged Dusty.

And he STOPPED IT. It just pushed and pushed but his big clawed feet dug in too, and he stopped it.

'You are worthy,' said the bull, and it walked up to the fourth stone and tapped it. 'This one,' it said."

In reply to The GM (msg # 17):

21:46, Today: phantom rolled 21 using 1d34 ((21)). - Finding a Path (+2 Dusty's advantage)
21:48, Today: phantom rolled 13 using 2d6+2 ((6,5)).

And as soon as we placed the cow skull with crown on the stone, everything when black.  I called out Zeddy, Constable are you there? They both answered yes.  Using my hearing, I tracked them down and we held hands.  A voice called out "Solve the labyrinth and see the Cow King, Minos!"  It remained pitch black.  "I got this I said"  I stood still a moment, took several deep breaths and then leaned close to ground and started sniffing.  I was able smell the correct path and lead us to the center of the maze.  Suddenly we could see again.  And before us, was a Giant Minotaur with wearing a crown.  He looked at us and smiled.  "I am Minos, the Cow King.  You have reached my Arcane Sanctum.  How my I help you.
Zeddy explained the situation and Minos frowned. "I shall help you."  he then summoned his staff, slammed it into ground and there was a bright flash.  When our vision clear, we were back in the Pasture.  And Minos was flying away.

I looked at Zeddy and Constable *shrug* and said "I need a drink."  We then headed off to find a drink.

OOC: Well this worked out pretty well.  We didn't get too many stacking bonuses, but it did help keep it interesting.
I think this is the best iteration for two players.

I suggestion we post this in the Amber OOC and see if anyone wants to give it a chance to try it out with more players.

It was amusing to me how we went from beetle-men to beetle-queen to human paladins to fireballs to a rodeo-themed event... with THREE contests...

I have a similar idea to this experiment in mind that I'll be developing when I have the time... heaven knows when exactly THAT will be...
