The World of Prince Valiant
The world outside of Camelot is violent and lawless. The only centers of civilization and law are, in the West, King Arthur's kingdom in southern Britain, and in the East, the Byzantine Empire centered in Constantinople. The Goths, Vandals, Saxons, and other barbarians wander Europe, pillaging the remnants of the crumbled Roman Empire, and the relentless Huns sporadically ride forth from their homelands in distant Asia to conquer and burn. From the north, the Picts assail the Old Roman Wall, seeking a weakness in the Britons' defenses.
Yet, since Arthur famously drew the magical sword Excalibur from the stone at Londinium, revealing himself to be the rightful High King of Britain, he has united once-feuding kings and dukes under his benevolent rule, with the learned wizard Merlin giving him counsel. The light of civilization has been rekindled at Camelot, and the horn of chivalry has been winded, attracting those of noble heart to flock to Arthur's banner.
