Re: OOC ~ The King's Hall

Sorry I missed your question. Looks like it's been resolved.

As a side note, I'm keeping track of the passage of time, an enjoyable habit I've developed in other campaigns I've run, and I'll keep a record of the current time and date as of my most recent posting under my profile description.

Not that your characters have access to clocks and calendars, but you would likely be aware of the current date based on religious observances (like holidays and local customs) and monastic hours (which are marked by the ringing of bells).

Re: OOC ~ The King's Hall

That all makes sense to me. Thank you for including such details. Keeping track of the time according to what bells are ringing makes a lot of sense to me.

In case anyone is interested.

My day is filled with Zoom meetings and training. I'll try to get a post out during my launch break within the next hour. Otherwise I'll be unable to post for the next eight hours.

Re: OOC ~ The King's Hall

Och, my mouth waters. It's a first edition, but still, if I had the spare money, that would be tempting.

I also put the Prince Valiant books on my wishlist on Noble Knight Games, so they should send me an email if they get a copy in. Fingers crossed!

Re: OOC ~ The King's Hall

I get daily updates from Ebay in this catagory. I'll keep sharing links if they are helpful. That older printing is actually easier to find these days than the more recent reprints.

I can't recall if you'd already mentioned this or not, but what is Sir Gerod's horse's name?

It appears that I haven't given my horse a name. Zounds! I must ponder this.

Re: OOC ~ The King's Hall

And now we come to a fight!

Drawn by the sight of a knight in armor, many of the pirates will come at Sir Gerod at once. However, they will be limited by the restrictions of fighting on or between ships, which will limit them to about two at a time.

Torah won't face this challenge initially unless she does something to make herself a focus of the pirate crew's ire. She will likely face a single opponent at a time.

Your throws will generally be Brawn + Arms or Brawling + any modifiers from armor, weapons, or other factors (location, morale, weather, etc.).

You will be making Opposed Resolutions against the pirates.

Depending on the actions you describe taking (or intending to take), I will apply appropriate modifiers. Most of the fighting will incur a -1 penalty due to the unsteadiness of fighting upon a ship deck (neither of you has earned your sea legs yet!).

Additional challenges, such as leaping across the gap between ships or climbing the rigging may further decrease your coins as the difficulties pile on.

Alternatively, using the environment to your advantage will give you positive modifiers - tumbling a barrel between you and your attacker, setting something on fire, attacking from higher ground, and so on. I encourage you to be creative and put on the Storyteller hat to improvise useful items you might reasonably expect to find aboard ship, worn/held by your allies/foes, etc., even if I didn't initially describe them being there.

Given that this is a large combat scene, there are three ways I currently see that we could handle this:

   1. You describe your intended actions and wait for me to tell you what coins to throw. Given our slower pace, this could take longer.

   2. You describe your intended actions as above, but at the end you may append your unmodified coin throw. Then I'll apply modifiers, either adding to (throwing on your behalf) or reducing your coins thrown ("deleting" your throw results one by one, beginning from the last coin thrown and working backward).

   3. I could perform all of your coin throws on your behalf.

The last two options seem like they would be faster, but I want to allow you as much sense of agency as you would like. It's fun to roll the dice!

Re: OOC ~ The King's Hall

Excellent!

Of the three options I prefer the second one if that is acceptable to you. Having you do all of the coin tosses is also cool if that makes your life easier.

I'll give the scene a good think and then make a post.

Agreed, option 2 sounds best... but I'm fine with option 3 as well.

To help with setting the scene I want to confirm that this is the type of ship we are currently standing on. Is that correct? I neglected to double check before my previous post and don't want to make the same mistake twice.

In reply to Sir Gerod Angrave (msg # 42):

That is correct! I read that knarrs were often used to convey livestock like horses as well as cargo, so that's what I've been picturing.

I saw this cover of a song from "Assassin's Creed: Valhalla" and it made me think of Torah: https://youtu.be/KRqIkTlGIOE

Nice song.

I’m going to wait for Gerod’s IC combat post before I make my own.  I’m also expecting a busy weekend too.

Torah, if you don't mind I'd like to wait to decide how Gerod will react to all of this until I see how Torah is taken out of the fight.

I'm here!

Sir Gerod's player hasn't logged onto the site since May 3rd. Hopefully, everything's okay with him.

No pressure from me -- as soon as he's able to return, I'm happy to resume the game.
