Pantheons

The people of Trozan largely worship one or more of the following deities.  Unless one is a cleric, there is seldom conflict between the worship of one and another of the deities, except in the instances noted where there is particular conflict between deities.  Clerics are, of course, devoted to only one of the deities, though out of politeness they may participate in any of the holy day celebrations that are not antithetical to their deity, and are generally polite to clerics of any other deity as long as there is not a specific conflict between them (as with Brelig and Coram, for example).

In a long-ago past, there had been conflict between the gods, and clans are often named after the deity that they sided with via the format na'[genitive form of the deity's name]  Commonly, the genitive formation is through either adding an “i” (eg Uric = na'Urici) or changing the final vowel to an “i” (eg Ardruna = na'Ardruni).  This is not, of course, the only way a clan is named, but in such clans the worship of that deity is preeminent, but rarely exclusive, and the culture of the clan is largely in keeping with the ideals of the deity in question.

Uric and Melios were the first-born of the gods, followed by their sister Riegin.  Uric and Melios were both good, kind, and just with no conflicts between them; Riegin provided the strength and honor to uphold their good intentions.  Additional gods were born – fraternal twins Nalagar and Lovianis who are wholly dissimilar and hate each other for their opposite ideals; Brelig is an especial enemy of his brother Coram; Indolent Dhuris and industrious Ardruna are frequently at odds, as are orderly Bragla and self-serving Seidrun.

Cleric PCs may choose any non-evil deity.  While there is a normal alignment (which matches the deity's own alignment) other alignments that match on at least one point are acceptable.  For example, Ardruna, who is Neutral Good normally has clerics who are Neutral Good, but they may also be Lawful Good, Neutral (True), or Chaotic Good.  As long as the cleric's behavior doesn't stray out of the range of permitted alignments, the cleric will remain in good standing with the deity.

In general, the cleric must be either of the same alignment as the deity or an alignment directly to one side or a vertical single step (diagonal lines would be two steps away, and thus not acceptable for a cleric).

Lawful GoodNeutral GoodChaotic Good
Lawful NeutralNeutral (True)Chaotic Neutral
Lawful EvilNeutral EvilChaotic Evil

Access to spells by spheres are up to the maximum listed as a parenthetical number next to the major and minor access for each deity.

Many of the demi-humans of Trozan worship the deities of Trozan, and may also have dedication to one or more of the deities of their own race.  This is largely known and accepted, although temples and shrines are largely restricted to the areas populated with a majority of the population of the given race.

Beyond the realm of Trozan, there are other deities who are often worshiped.  The worship of these deities is generally not accepted within the bounds of Trozan (although some of these cults were popular in the past), and these deities are generally unknown except to those who have had significant interaction in the other nations or are especial scholars.

Ardruna

Ardruna –  goddess of the sun, harvest, fertility, and life
Alignment of worshipers: any non-evil
Alignment of clerics:  normally Neutral Good
Colors: Gold and green
Holy Symbol: Sunburst medallion of gold
Symbols: barley, the sun, hawk
Patronage: farmers, healers, rangers, midwives, artisans.
Major Access (7): All, Astral, Charm, Creation, Divination, Guardian, Healing, Necromantic, Plant, Protection, Sun, Weather
Minor Access (3): Elemental
No Access: Animal, Combat, Summoning
Appearance:  Friendly, smiling woman of middle years with long, curly sandy-brown hair and blue eyes, dressed in sandals and green robes.

Ardruna is considered to be the goddess of the fruitful earth, giver of life and plenty.  She is the patroness of nurturing, growth, and peace.

Her clerics are 60% female, and usually prefer natural healing (herbal preparations) over spells.  However, when they do use their spells, they heal an additional +1 to the roll.  Her clerics are permitted to marry, and husband-and-wife teams are not uncommon.

Clerics fight with a staff-flail or flail or quarterstaff.  Spells granted are usually related to healing, plant growth, weather control.

In good weather Ardruna is worshiped outdoors, usually in fields.  Small open shrines are also common.  Worship normally takes place at noon on the day after the full moon (16th) of every month.  Fruit, nuts, or other natural produce are normal offerings.  Other holy days are Sun Day (2nd of New Month, day after the winter solstice), Field Blessing (2nd of Spring, just before planting), Harvest Fest (20th of the Month of the Bear).

Bragla

Bragla (the Death Crone) – goddess of death and the underworld
Alignment of worshipers:  any, but commonly lawful and/or neutral
Alignment of clerics:  normally Lawful Neutral
Colors: Red and black
Holy Symbol:  Twisted blackwood staff or deadwood twig
Symbols:  bare-branched tree of white wood, gate of petrified wood
Patronage:  fighters, mages, illusionists, executioners.
Major Access (7):  All, Astral, Charm, Combat, Creation, Divination, Guardian, Healing, Necromantic, Protection, Summoning, Sun
Minor Access (3):  Elemental
No Access:  Animal, Plant, Weather
Appearance:  a twisted old woman with a grim demeanor, gray hair straggling out from the hood of musty black robes

Bragla is considered the keeper of the underworld, Ruhnkeil.  She has care of the souls of those sent to her with proper rites.  She may also claim one who was sent off without the proper rites, but it is usually considered far better for the dead to be given those rites, as the lack may keep the deceased out of Ruhnkeil.  Treatment of the souls in Ruhnkeil depends on the status in life and send-off to Bragla.  She sends the demigod Erin the Hunter to collect souls and bring them to the stone halls of Ruhnkeil.  Speaking her name is considered to be bad luck, often accompanied by death and ill-fortune, and so most people only dare to refer to her as “the Death Crone”.

Bragla has few dedicated clerics, although nearly every cleric (not just those dedicated to Bragla or Erin) knows and would perform the proper rites for marking the deceased for collection by Erin the Hunter.  Although her clerics make most people uneasy, they are also known for being fair dealing, noted spiritual advisors (particularly to those with lingering illnesses), and no fear of death and a fatalistic disregard for personal danger.  Clerics will help injured on a battlefield, tend to the sick during epidemics, and so on.

Clerics usually fight with a staff of twisted blackwood, but may also use a sling.

There are two major temples to Bragla in Trozan, but many shrines are found in cities and towns near graveyards.  These shrines are one room buildings where worship takes place on the day of the new moon (1st) of every month.  Offerings are typically burnt offerings of aromatic herbs, twigs, a pair of coins, or other small objects associated with funerals.  Major holidays are Crone's Return (1st of New Month), Day of Risk (16th of Chivalry), and Metamorphosis (1st of Hunter's Month)

Gambros

Gambros (The Bat God or Timelord) – god of entropy, decay, and death
Alignment of worshipers:  any Evil
Alignment of clerics: normally Chaotic Evil
Colors: brown and black
Holy Symbol: dried foot and claw of screech bat
Symbols:  two-faced bat, sundial
Patronage: assassins, murderers, torturers, those who fear death, those concerned with the march of time
Major Access:  (7)All, Astral, Charm, Combat, Creation, Divination, Guardian, Healing, Necromantic, Protection, Summoning, Sun
Minor Access (3):  Elemental
No Access:  Animal, Plant, Weather
Appearance:  a man whose face shifts between that of a young brown-eyed, black-haired man with a perpetual frown and that of a gaunt, skeletal, white-haired old man; may also appear as a giant screech bat with two faces (young and old)

Gambros is spiteful, unpredictable and cruel with patience which wavers between much and none at all.  He is generally worshiped by those who hope to gain mastery over death or otherwise control time, as well as alternately by those who want no change or those who want total upheaval.

Clerics are often favored with blessings like perpetual youth or an extended lifetime.  The stagnant cycle is unspectacular, but when the god craves change and destruction, his clerics have been responsible for horrible sacrifices, cruel tortures, and other obscenities to satisfy the whim of their god.  The cult has been outlawed in most of the civilized areas of Trozan, though worship does tend to continue in secret.

Clerics fight with a falchion as their weapon of preference, or a spiked flail.

Temples may still be found in many towns and cities, although no longer openly frequented (there are often suspicions of secret pathways into these temples to allow clandestine worship).  Gambros is worshiped weekly with blood sacrifices of animals and monthly with a human or demi-human sacrifice.  There are rumored to be several holidays, but the details of ceremonies are largely speculation.  The one known holiday is Hold Time at the spring equinox when the moon appears to be taking a retrograde path in the skies.

Lan Loros

Lan Loros (Father of Mist) – god of fog and the ocean
Alignment of worshipers:  any non-lawful
Alignment of clerics:  normally Chaotic Neutral
Colors: blue, gray
Holy Symbol: rune-carved walrus tusk worn around neck
Symbols: fog, sea gull, walrus, water opal
Patronage: thieves, fighters, those who need stealth, sailors
Major Access (7):  All, Astral, Charm, Combat, Creation, Divination, Guardian, Healing, Necromantic, Protection, Summoning, Sun
Minor Access (3):  Elemental
No Access:  Animal, Plant, Weather
Appearance:  a mature, weather-beaten man with grayish skin, long gray hair, a curling beard and blue-gray eyes dressed only in a loincloth with a talisman hanging from his neck made of gull feathers and walrus tusks

Lan Loros is responsible for the land mists, the great Wall of Fog, and the ocean waters.  He can control weather and cause or ease storms and the winds that bring or disperse fogs.  He is silent and undemonstrative.  His worldly followers tend to be off-beat and daring persons.  He responds to his followers with aid in the form of a cloaking mist, a sea gull or a walrus.

Most of his clerics are independent-minded adventurers who enjoy missions requiring subtlety rather than force.  His clerics fight with nets or crossbows as their weapons of preference.

Temples are located in cities, but mostly in those areas which has high incidents of foggy weather.  The temples are constantly surrounded by a magical fog, and he is worshiped within with simple meditational ceremonies once a week and honored on the 3rd of each month with sacrifices of shellfish, other goods from the sea, or burning incense.

His major holiday is the Ceremony of Mist (3rd of New Month) when those in the temple are enveloped in a fog which provides a god-sent euphoria resulting in dream-visions.  Another holiday is Sea Return (10th of King's Month) on a date when odd magical fogs appear around the land.

Lenoris

Lenoris – goddess of woodland nature and wildlife
Alignment of worshipers:  any Neutral or Good
Alignment of clerics: normally Neutral (True)
Colors: dark brown, blue, silver
Holy Symbol: sprig of isvahn (thornberry) worked in silver
Symbols: isvahn (thornberry), leaping stag, short bow
Patronage: druids, rangers, hunters, trappers, wilderness dwellers
Major Access (7):  All, Animal, Combat, Creation, Elemental, Guardian, Healing, Necromantic, Plant, Protection, Sun, Weather
Minor Access (3): Divination
No Access:  Astral, Charm, Summoning
Appearance:  a beautiful, slim woman with green eyes and waist-length straight brown hair.  A garland of isvahn is on her head, she wears a plain tunic and carries a short bow.  She is normally depicted in the company of a number of small forest creatures.

Lenoris is the goddess of woodlands and wildlife, though with only small influence in deserts and places with little forest vegetation. She is the mistress of the elementals in her domain.  Although she cares about woodland life, she understands the mortal dependency for sustenance on that life and aids hunters.  Her blessings are asked of her before an animal is killed and their souls commended to her care.  Isvahn (thornberry) is a hallucinogenic plant with silvery leaves and blue berries on a dark throny stem.  Consumption by her followers—three berries—is done in the hopes of receiving a vision from the goddess.

Most of her clerics are called Warders of Lenoris, and are functionally druids who do not permit hunting within a certain radius of their grove.  Warders are vegetarians and generally pacifists, though they will use a club or quarterstaff if necessary.  A second-class group are clerics of generally Neutral Good alignment who will leave the woodlands for adventure and fight with a short bow as their weapon of preference.

Lenoris' most holy spots are found near natural springs in woodland areas.  Temples are usually made of unfinished, hand-hewn wood.  Monthly devotions are held at sunrise on the 20th of each month with offerings of flowers, fruit, or woodland greenery.  Her greatest holiday is called the Spring Rites which begin on the 7th of Spring and culminate on Druid's Day on the 9th of Spring.  Once every ten years, there is a Grand Conclave of druids in the month prior to the Spring Rites during which challenges and other druidical business is resolved.

Melios

Melios (The Healer) – god of scruples, service, and healing
Alignment of worshipers:  any Good and Lawful Neutral
Alignment of clerics: normally Lawful Good
Colors: light blue
Holy Symbol: amethyst-tinged quartz
Symbols:outstretched hand with blue aura, mortar and pestle
Patronage: anyone, especially clerics devoted to healing and persons devoted to charity
Major Access (7):  All, Astral, Charm, Combat, Creation, Divination, Guardian, Healing, Necromantic, Protection, Summoning, Sun
Minor Access (3):  Elemental
No Access:  Animal, Plant, Weather
Appearance:  a middle-aged man with bushy white eyebrows and hair, a gentle-appearing visage, and blue eyes.  He dresses in a pale blue robe and sandals carrying only a walking stick and a piece of healing quartz in a pouch

The Healer is one of the most helpful deities, giving aid to persons willing to help themselves and who truly need his help.

The clerical practice is not for the lazy or slothful—the temple requires hard work for the members of the order who are expected to search out those in need of help and create ways of being of service to the community.  They do not covet material wealth for personal use, and seldom eat meat.  They are sometimes called Bluerobes due to wearing the light blue robes of their god.  They fight with the quarterstaff as their weapon of choice, seeking only to stun rather than injure or kill.

Melios has temples in both cities and country.  Most are small, humble affairs, a simple base of operation from which clerics operate to help the community.  There are a few which are more lavish due to the gifts given by grateful followers.  Melios is worshiped weekly and accepts any offering that was neither acquired at the expense of or by hurting another being.

Most popular holiday is the Day of Thanks (11th of Summer), when gifts and contributions are made by worshipers and the clerics throw a feast for the followers.  Day of Healing, on the 4th of Harvest, is a day when difficult cases are treated.

Riegin

Riegin – goddess of war
Alignment of worshipers:  any except Chaotic Evil
Alignment of Clerics:  normally Lawful Good
Colors: Red, Yellow, Black
Symbol: small wolf's head carved out of a carnelian stone, worn as a medallion
Symbols: red wolf, wolf's head, wolf's eyes
Patronage: any fighter or one who defends their personal honor
Major Access (7):  All, Astral, Charm, Combat, Creation, Divination, Guardian, Healing, Necromantic, Protection, Summoning, Sun
Minor Access (3):  Elemental
No Access:  Animal, Plant, Weather
Appearance:  A wiry, mature woman with amber eyes and red hair, she wears her hair in a single braid, and wears chain mail and carries a mace.  She may also, at will, take the form of a red wolf.

Riegin is the mightiest fighter among the gods, and has taken it upon herself to squelch disagreements and infighting amongst her brethren.  Like her brothers Melios and Uric, she believes the others should behave honorably and work for the common good.  This has earned some resentment from other gods who consider her ways high-handed, but none dare confront her face-to-face.  She has an unbendable sense of honor and fairness, and admires stoic endurance of hurt or ill.

Clerics of Riegin are slow to give their word, as once they have given their word on a matter, going back on that word would cost them their clerical powers.  They are skilled fighters but do not neglect their temples to mix in mundane conflicts.  Those who wish to seek out confrontations in a good cause join the Brotherhood of Wolves, the military arm of her temple.  Clerics use a mace as their weapon of preference.

Temples are located in both cities and the country, and a few at the site of ancient battlefields.  In war, a small portable shrine may be carried with the army and set up in the camp or at the site of an imminent battle.  Special prayers are offered before combat, and she is also worshiped once a month with the offering of valuable goods (preferably those acquired by force of arms or as a reward for help).  Her greatest holiday is Challenge Day (22nd of Chivalry), also known as Knight's Day.  On this day, honor feuds and other personal challenges are resolved by combat after invocation of the goddess who is believed to aid the one who is in the right.
