Morrigan's Sanctum

After a warm and sunny weekend, the temperature has dropped sharply. The wind from the ocean is moist and chill, rattling the windows of the weathered but brightly painted two-story beach house at odd intervals.

Occasionally, you catch what you imagine to be a voice in song, a single melodic cord echoing from behind the house, seemingly from the sea.

Having arrived in Quincy recently, you've been directed to Morrigan's sanctum for lodging and an introduction to Quincy.

As everyone arrives, Morrigan greets you from the porch, ushering some into the living room and kitchen and providing everyone fresh chocolate chip cookies, water, and canned beer.

Morrigan "Welcome to my humble abode. I'm waiting for everyone to get here before I dive into my spiel. Feel free to wander around downstairs and outback. If you wind up upstairs and my sheets restrain you, you've been warned. I can answer any questions you may have while everyone arrives."

"Hi Marlo! Welcome to Quincy. No rush but I appreciate it, my place always winds up as a hostel for transient mages. I'll take the favors from the wise and powerful though. I should have some tea around somewhere, just a moment."

Morrigan rummages around in her kitchen until she finds a box of miscellaneous teas and a random tin of tea leaves.

"Here you go Marlo, the water's hot and I've brought sugar and cream as well." She says as she sits the tea box and tin on the living room table along with a glass of steaming water and two containers of brown sugar and cold cream.

"Feel free to yell, I'll be posted by the door as everyone arrives"

Morrigan's Sanctum

Pulling up to the house is a black limousine with tinted windows. It parked in front of Morrigan’s house and sat there for a few minutes before the passenger door opened and a very well built Afro American stepped out and walked to open the back door. Out stepped a very attractive young Egyptian woman with green eyes. She looked the place up and down for a moment then she began to walk to the door. The man quickly followed behind her and kept quiet.

She rang the door bell and waited for someone to answer

If anyone was watching her they surely would of noticed her eyes slightly rolled as she wondered why this place when there was many other nicer places.

As Virgil’s ride approached, he noticed the limousine pulling off and a sly smile swept across his face. His momentary frustration was abated as he stepped out of the car, noticing Morrigan sitting on the porch. “Hey, beautiful. It’s been a while. What’s the party looking like inside?” he asked. He stood before her, well dressed in a sharp charcoal colored suit with a red tie, although he appears to have not slept for days. “I took care of that thing for you, by the way.”

Morrigan eyes the limo as it pulls into the yard from inside Silver Ladder, I'll put tass on it >

She'll quickly open the door once Isis rings the doorbell and greet her, "Hi, I'm Morrigan. Welcome, come inside, please. There are cookies, water, and beer on the table. I'm still waiting for everyone to arrive. The young woman inside is a mage named Marlo. I'll go over introductions once everyone arrives."

To Virgil she'll simply reply "The party looks like a party silly. Go join the fun."

Morrigan escorts Isis and Virgil to the living room, showing both where the bathroom, kitchen and back door are located as well.

Sparrow's arrival was understated by comparison. A rideshars dropped her off just down the road and she strolled up. The pale woman was wearing black leather in quantity, and had multiple vivid tattoos showing that made her look younger than her years.

She rapped on the door exactly twice, waited for it to open, and beamed at her host. "Hello there, dear. Such a pleasure. May I come in? Thank you, thank you."

Morrigan's Sanctum

Vagrant arrived by foot, walking barefoot along the beach towards the house with his ratty old boots dangling from one hand. In truth he probably could have finagled a ride, but it was a nice day out and it seemed a shame not to take the scenic route. Arriving with him was Aegis, a younger mage who Vagrant had been traveling with for the past several months as he helped introduce him to awakened society. Though Vagrant sometimes felt like he was learning just as much from Aegis as he taught, the kid was a natural.

“Looks like this is the place,” Vagrant said to his companion as they stepped off the sand and he paused to slip his boots back on.

Compared to what he was used to Morrigan’s house was practically a mansion. Even after almost a decade as an awakened he still felt out of place at most Sanctums he visited, being able to perform miracles had a way of letting people accumulate wealth after all. Perhaps that was why he had kept on the move for so long. Still, whatever it was that had caused the Quincy mages to call so many awakened here must be important, he’d stick around at least until the job was done.

A woman walks south, unhurried, following the shoreline. She is wearing a practical hiking outfit and a large backpack with a bow and quiver strapped to it. In her right hand, she carries a pair of hiking boots, with the brown woollen socks socks carefully stuffed in. Her bare feed move gracefully on the sand, and from time to time she stops, to look out at the waves, the seagulls or the beach.

She stops on the beach below Morrigan's house, mutters a few words to herself and ascends.

Aegis had simply nodded in agreement when Vagrant announced their arrival at their destination, and waited patiently for his mentor to put his shoes back on. Aegis had kept his own, but now was regretting that decision as sand had seeped into well-worn sneakers that had at one time been white; yet another lesson the old man had taught him without saying a word.

He had nodded politely to Morrigan when she greeted them, but his attention was fully focused on the grandeur of the magus' house. He'd never been to the beach before, and now to be staying at such an amazing house right on the beach; he honestly couldn't even process it. He instinctively slid his hands down his faded, by wear not a factory, blue jeans in an attempt to make himself more presentable, and pushed the sleeves of his red hoodie up before sliding his hands into his pockets.

For a moment he just stared as he walked around the room and then finally walked over to the table, grabbed a chocolate chip cookie, and began to nibble as he continued perusing the room, seemingly ignorant of the request that came from the kitchen.

She'll welcome everyone into the house before she proceeds to gather everyone in the living room.

"I'll keep this short. Welcome to Quincy, I'm Morrigan, Moros of the Mysterium. I offer you all sanctum, passage, and hospitality here. There are few other mages in Quincy, honestly, you lot outnumber them by 5 easily. Do not attract Seer attention here and do not attract the Boston consilium's attention here. The perk of Quincy is it's close enough you can drive into town but far enough away no one's looking. Change that and you can deal w/ the seers and hierarchs 'subtle' ministrations."

"There are keys in the kitchen that open spacial doors in this house, pick a key and it will always open a door to "your" room and your room only. If you just open the door normally minus the key, you'll probably get a closet or whatever is normally there. "

"Lastly, don't drain the hallow. It produces 4 tass daily, just take the seashells. Oh, I trap and keep ghosts in the basement. They're mean, go down shielded if you need something down there."

"Questions?"

"We have been asked to come together, different paths and orders. This could be a huge coincidene, but it seems like someone mighty enough to steer the fates of so many magi has called us here. I doubt that this is the work of Morrigan, who would be a fool to fill her house with mages and then tell them not to draw the attention of the Hierarch."

She looks at Morrigan and her gaze implies that despite her words she respects her host.

"We could of course try to find out who has brought us together, or we could simply set ourselves an agenda, or several agendas, and use the synergies of our meeting here for our own purposes. So tell me, do any of you know why you have been called here?"

Hunter stiffened, power flowing at the edge of his vision in the Supernal Vision that he kept permanently active. “Morrigan, dear,” exclaimed Virgil, his smile somewhat fading, as he placed his black leather briefcase on the table. Her unclasped the front of it. “Have you any idea what’s going on?” He reached into the case and withdrew an ornamental designed katana that clearly should not have fit. The sheathe appears to be black and red snake skin, with a serpent devouring its own tail for the cross guard. He looked upon the blade as if he forgot where he was momentarily, enamored in its beauty before his eyes snapped back to the situation at hand.

The sound of a helicopter, the smell of napalm, the taste of blood in his mouth. Sensations from a time he barely remembered flashed through his mind as something tried to encase his consciousness in an illusory cage.

But those times were long behind him, and the illusion was ripped apart with a exertion of will before it could take root. Whatever was doing this would have to do a lot better than that.

performing the mudra taught to him by his order, Vagrant finished casting his protective spell. He could only cover ten people with it, and there were twelve of them in the house, so he excluded himself and Aegis. It was an Arrow's calling to take on the risks in these situations after all.

"Throwing up wards" he yelled out as an after thought, probably not smart to cast spells on stranger out of the blue when tensions were already high.

Morrigan's Sanctum

Something about what's happening, and being in a strange house...

Konkretus is a kid of 15, standing stock still on top of a table, in the house of a friend who's away with his parents on vacation.  He'd thought the dog would be being boarded, or if not he'd thought it would remember him, and be cool, but there it was, pacing around the dining room, looking up at him hungrily, a growl like a hellhound grinding in its throat and actual drool hanging from toothy jaws.  He knew how to get out of this... a leap onto springy legs, bouncing him onto the couch in the living room, another bounce and back-somersault taking him through the big window, hoping the leather jacket on his back would be enough protection, then a short sprint to the butternut tree before Janus, the rottweiler that weighed more than he did, realized what was going on.  But he was frozen, running through the sequence in his mind over and over again, but aware of all the things that could go wrong, and how much it would hurt if it did.

But, wait a minute... that had already happened.  He still had the scar on his back, but it went fine...

The young mage focused again, mentally shaking off the memory, again focusing on his mage sight.  But as the scary old Arrow summoned wards, he realized something dangerous might be happening, realized he shouldn't have had his guard down here, even if it was rude to pry... and he used his will to expand his senses.

The memory encased him once again, somehow more complete this time. He was fully back in the jungles of Vietnam this time, towards the end of the war when Uncle Sam was losing patience. His platoon had been assigned to a rearguard action, which was pretty much as shitty as it sounded. It was nostalgic in a way, there were details in this recreation that he had long forgotten. Oddly he was aware that this was a recreation, or at least not reality, perhaps because he had already shrugged off the memory once before. Which was why he knew he didn't want to spend another second in this particular memory, they hadn't been moving fast enough and things were about to go sideways in a bad way. Ignoring the sounds of bullets whizzing by and the screams of his platoon that he get his ass moving, Vagrant closed his eyes and cleared his mind as he sought a meditative calm. With an immense effort of will he once again dispelled the illusion.

Strawberry, Vagrant and Aegis are able to clear their minds and escape from the memory.

As they return to their senses they find themselves standing in front of Morrigan's sanctum's front door surrounded by some of the other mages gathered as well as Virgil with his sword drawn.

They too now stand before mirror images of themselves, Strawberry's reflection wears an impatient scowl, Vagrant's towering clone radiates poise and resolve while Aegis's copy wears an expression of doubt, its body language speaking of hesitancy.

As the three mages return to their senses, their copies reach out and embrace them, draining a single point of mana.

Strawberry's copy whispers to her, "Please don't send me back, I'm finally free."

Vagrant's copy speaks in a gravelly whisper, asking him, "Help me."

Aegis's copy quietly cries as it embraces him, "Thank you, I am free."

Of course Vagrant's first instinct with regards to the copy was to lash out. All signs pointed to this being some kind of attack, except for the words whispered by his doppelgänger.

If he was still the person he was in the memories this thing had showed him, then he probably still would have lashed out. He was not okay with people invading his personal space. On the street that kind of behavior never led to anything good and needed to be shut down right away.

But, he had also met people who acted out in ways that would seem offensive to most that were really just cries for help. Some people just lacked the ability to communicate any other way.

So, repressing his violent urges, he activated his Mage Sight aligned with his Prime arcana and focused on the copy that was embracing him, hoping to glean something from him.

As Aegis pushes away his copy it bumps into the door knocking it open. As the door opens it flees out of the door knocking Brownie over in its haste.

Brownie stands on the porch staring in at quite a strange scene on the other side of Morrigan's door as he's barreled into by one of the many pairs of twins in this house.

Virgil stands there surrounded by the others and their twins with his sword drawn.

Strawberry and her twin embrace in the foyer near the door. "Thank you, this is more than I ever dreamed"

Konkretus stands before his twin as it too embraces him while whispering "Thank you, Thank you." (-1 point of mana)

Vagrant and his twin watch each other

Sharvara returns to the present and is greeted by a tight hug from a man wearing his appearance. As this man grips Sharvara he whispers to Sharvara "Don't worry Dev, with me here they'll feel your wrath" (-1 point of Mana)

Morrigan also snaps out her confusion and immediately pushes off her twin just as she reaches to grab her, "Don't fucking touch me" she screams.

Isis snaps to her senses too gathered in the foyer with the other mages and is embraced by her twin. During the embrace, her twin whispers to her "Come with me, join me. They are powerless before your beauty, wracked with yearning. They ache for your guidance."

Kairos too recovers his wits and comes to his senses hugging himself in Morrigan's foyer. (-1 point of Mana) The twin users Kairos's sleeper name, his true name as he addresses Kairos, asking if he can stay like this, stating this condition is addictive.

Hunter too recovers his wits having been lost in the emotional memories(-1 WP, -1 Mana). He's situated further back in the house, in the living room. As he comes back around he see's a copy of himself gripping his wrist. The copy whispers "You don't deserve any of it, not the way you lie to them. I'll tell them the truth and then see if they still accept you."

Sparrow too recovers her wits having been lost in the emotional memories (-1 WP, - 1 Mana).
She awakes to find a copy of her calmly laying down with it's head in her lap. As she stares down at herself, the copy whispers "What are you really trying to do here? No one needs you. Just run away again like always."

Morrigan's Sanctum

Still unsure how her other self can be a spirit, she attempts to command it. She utters powerful words in the language that predates times:

"Spirit, I command thee: Stop draining my mana and stay here so I can fugure out a way to help you."
The last bit is not strictly necessary, as she knows, but she hates the business of commanding spirits and prefers finding mutually agreeable solution. If the white man had spent more time listening to the spirits, America wouldn't be the sad toxic landscape of today. She tries to justify her spell by telling herself that you can't negotiate with someone attacking you.

Carefully, she eyes the form before her, hoping it will heed her command, her face an inscrutable mask hiding her discomfort and her insecurity.

Vagrant's eyes widened in surprise at what his mage sight revealed. Whatever this thing was, it wasn't an illusion. From what he had heard from other mages the magic involved in creating a living, apparently sentient, being was not beyond the realm of possibility for masters of prime magic. Yet, this didn't feel like something conjured up by an awakened.

"You asked for help... help with what?" he asked cautiously.

She could of course go the polite way and speak with it, but her impatience gets the better of her and she decides to rip the knowledge out of the spirit without asking. She brushes aside the shame of being discourteous to a spirit, but taking the direct route feels good, damn good.

Konkretus, high speech unravels itself within your mind as you become aware of the answers you seek. You lose another point of mana (-1) and the copy of you glows slightly. Your mage sight registers something.

Vagrant, your double whispers back to you "I am free now, that is all I need." He steps back away from you before he turns a walks out the door. As he crosses the threshold he shimmers before fading from sight. (This pings everyone's mage sigh)

Sharvara your double moves back quickly after you shove it away. You yet again feel the pull on your mana (-1) and see the double glow slightly. It quickly runs for a nearby window where it jumps through and before hitting the glass it shimmers. (this pings everyone's mage sight)

Strawberry your twin stands before fixated by your commend. It cries out in a strange tongue and you feel a wave of power wash over the area (This pings your mage sight). You can hear a strange, quiet scratching noise and start to see a few cockroaches in the house.  "Free me from your command, mother witch. I am new to this world and wish to see more of it. I grow impatient."

Hunter, you gain no mana from the spell. You can feel it grip the creature only to find nothing it can hold, the pattern for mana that it seeks not found in your double. "Thief, you steal their future and seal their doom with your lies. I will show you their true beliefs" Hunter, as your double says this it slowly backs away to the nearest window, you feel a familiar pull on your mana (-1 mana), and like Sharvara's double it leaps towards the window before shimmering and disappearing (This triggers everyone's mage sight) A hazy outline can be seen running further away from the house by those with twilight sight attended to death/mind.

Aegis you see your copy in the front yard next to Morrigan. Your mage sight sings of various phenomena as you close in on the pair. You feel a familiar pull on your mana (-1 mana). Morrigan grabs your copy and both shimmer before fading from sight. (This triggers your mage sight as well)

Isis, as you turn the corner you only catch the fading image of your twin. You too feel a familiar pull on your mana (-1 mana). It is long enough for you to scrutinize it with your active mage sight - You learn it not awakened magic, it is mere minutes old and most resembles a practice you are unfamiliar with (Gnosis+Int to make sense of this)

Kairos, you learn of the spirit as you plumb its memory. All are fresh to you, the newest you have ever seen memories. You feel a familiar pull on your mana (-3 mana) As you study your copy you see it slowly fade from sight. (This triggers your mage sight) You continue to see a hazy outline run through a nearby wall and out of the house.

Virgil, you continue to feel a strong pull on your mana into your sword which glows slightly (-3 mana)

After several seconds he feels he has made some headway, but senses that pushing any further would risk contaminating the anomaly with his own magical signature.

Taking a step back he dons a thoughtful expression as he considers the best way to approach the next step of his investigation.

20:00, Sat 10 July: Vagrant rolled 1 success using 4d10 with the World of Darkness nWoD system with a target of 8, rerolling 10s with rolls of 1,6,10(+3),6.  Scrutiny roll #2.

05:54, Today: Vagrant failed (no successes) using 4d10 with the World of Darkness nWoD system with a target of 8, rerolling 10s with rolls of 7,1,5,4.  Scrutiny roll #3.

05:54, Today: Vagrant rolled 3 successes using 4d10 with the World of Darkness nWoD system with a target of 8, rerolling 10s with rolls of 8,7,10(+9),5.  Scrutiny roll #4.

With the earlier roll that is 6 successes total, which I believe lowers the opacity to 3.

Morrigan's Sanctum

Sharvara looks around at those few people left in the house, "Well, anyone with Prime please follow Morrigan. "

"I'm going to try and work some Fate and point us in the right direction." He then begins moving his hands in the motion of the rote his mentor taught him as the sound of High Speech hits everyone ear's.

OOC: Serendipity [MtA 135] (Rote, Fate 1/1) - Casting Time 1, No additional Factors. Rote Mudras (+3), High Speech (+2)
Die Pool = Gnosis 1 + Fate 1 + Yantra 5 = 7 die, no mana due to Rote casting
Effect: Upon casting, the mage receives a clear omen that suggests a course of action that will lead her closer to their goal. Stated goal for this casting "Discover source of attack".

16:03, Today: Sharvara rolled 2 successes using 7d10 with the World of Darkness nWoD system with a target of 8, rerolling 10s ((6,4,10(+8),1,6,6,6)).

In reply to Sharvara (msg # 134):

Hunter nodded, happy to have something that he could do, following Morrigan to the Hallow. Once there, he studied it.

Prime sight already active. Shall I roll Perception?

Hunter, you join Morrigan at the hallow. It's a quiet place on a hill overlooking the beach and the ocean beyond. Your mage sight highlights this hallow can be used as a yantra for related casting and while this may be a hallow there is something off about it. You can both reveal what you see and begin to scrutinize it - opacity 3.

Morrigan says to you "Do you know what they did to it?"

Sharvara, you get a random notice on your phone about a youtube video on tracking elusive wild game through dangerous environments.

"It's sneaky, but I am on it." Hunter replied.
"Got it. they have..." (to be edited)
"Hang on, I will do a detailed scan"
he went on. "Hang on, nearly, nope, too well concealed."

Morrigan's Sanctum

Aegis patrols around the yard, feeling a bit out of his element. Solving puzzles wasn't exactly his forte, so he figured the least he could do was try and find out where the copies may have disappeared to and making sure nothing gets back in from the yard.

Morrigan's Sanctum

After having poked and prodded the mystery with his mana as much as he was willing to risk, Vagrant decided it was time to try and reveal its secrets.

Spending a Willpower and Mana for +4 on revelation, that gives me a dice pool of 8 - 3 opacity = 5:

20:57, Today: Vagrant rolled 2 successes using 5d10 with the World of Darkness nWoD system with a target of 8, rerolling 10s with rolls of 8,3,8,4,7.  Revelation on mystery.

Morrigan's Sanctum

Sharvara smirks at the omen from the threads of Fate. "Subtle." he says quietly to himself.

He yells in the direction Hunter and Morrigan left, "Getting an Omen we need to hunt these things down to find the source, come follow us after, yeah?"

He makes a gesture to Virgil to follow him and goes outside, making a beeline for Vagrant and the others following the trail.

Morrigan's Sanctum

A soft breeze can be felt blowing out to sea.

Vagrant you see a mix of mysteries scattered upon the house and yard, all fresh, mere minutes old. None of them are awakened magic, and most resemble the practices of weaving or perfecting.

You see a mystery lingering on the house itself, a mystery lingering on the doorway, and a mystery lingering near you in the yard.

Sharvara, you're able to join Vagrant, Aegis, and Konkretus in the yard.

Virgil do you remain in the house with Strawberry? There are alot of insects crawling and flying around the house.

Aegis as you patrol around the yard Sharvara joins you, while Vagrant paces and Konkretus. As you process Konkretus's words, "It was a spirit.  It's form seemed to be related to my nimbus" did you want to make a gnosis+arcana roll to see what your options are?

Konkretus, Sharvara joins you while Aegis and Vagrant pace around the yard.

Isis, you cast your sight back to the past. Which moments do you want to review? You can see everything in the scene again and apply mage sight/perception checks.

Morrigan's Sanctum

Vagrant explains to the others everything that he has learned from his observations and then falls in with Sharvara.

He's still not sure about this whole 'hunting down' sentient beings plan, no matter whether they're spirits or anything else. But Sharavara seems to know more about what's going on than he does and examining the mysteries around the house hasn't really cleared things up for him so he's willing to follow the other's lead, for now.
