Re: Vol 2, Chapter 1: “Elegies & Arrivals”

Beijor's relief at the song of his life was visible, even if it was expressed as him taking note of the rhythm and meter of the singing while tapping his foot. But he stayed quiet; this was not his place.

When Cela suggested the party retire to the Sulphur's Spit, he smiled. He had a few ideas for lyrics he'd like to try out, particularly the one about all the surprising things that popped out of the pimples on hags' noses. This crowd would enjoy the humor, he thought.

He moved to leave the funeral first and get everything set up at the Spit, when suddenly --*

The talk of going for food and drinks in honor of the fallen warrior made the genasi's stomach grumble, as she hadn't eaten since the morning. She got closer to the tabaxi and dread haired human and, trying to calm her belly, she told them.

Can I join you? The idea of eating sounds wonderful now.

She looked towards Tempest and signaled her to come. She knew her sibling and was sure she was as famished as she was, despite her current emotions.

I don't think we were introduced, I am Sprinkle, and the brooding one over there is Tempest. We arrived in Deadwater this morning.

Smiling to the two women, she didn't see the attack coming at all...

Today: Sprinkle rolled 7 using 1d20+2.  Sprinkle dex save.

Re: Vol 2, Chapter 1: “Elegies & Arrivals”

Lenelle wasn't especially hungry, but thought the company sounded entirely pleasant, especially in the wake of Azatch's heartbreaking passage from this life.

And Cela was right, as usual;  he would approve.

Oops, and not to leave out, since he was standing there: "Sir Seth?  Do you want to come visit the sort of place many scaless spend all their copper & silver at?"

She wasn't sure if Skye felt physically well enough to attend; but if not, she'd offer to bring her back anything she might like.   First she had to collect her fellow --

"C'mon, let's go join them," she said, approaching Joshua, smiling as positively as she could manage. "I think Simon just got a familiar, like Tara.  Let's learn the name, hear the story, and reminisce about Azatch."

All of which impacted her (slow) reaction to whatever occurred next...

Lenelle Toreth rolled 5 using 1d20+2.  dex save.

Tempest stood by as the fire burnt the body of the warrior. From all tales going around, she would have liked him - quiet, to the point, a lot like her.

When the suggestion came to eat, tempest nodded, and seeing her sister indicate, walked over to her side. Before she could say anything, her natural battle instincts felt something was off, and turned as quickly as a cat.

Re: Vol 2, Chapter 1: “Elegies & Arrivals”

Suddenly, an enormous black shape swooped from the night sky with a beating of leathery wings! Before Simon could warn his friends, the Black Dragon opened its mouth and spewed a line of acid that splashed toward Azatch’s pyre. Joshua saw the Dragon and tackled Lenelle out of the way. Unfortunately, they collided with Cela and Sheila, bringing them down in a tangle of limbs on the ground. Urged by Nimbus, Simon ran for his life, avoiding the Dragon’s vicious attack.

Sprinkle, Tempest, & Telric were caught directly in the acid stream! Tempest’s instincts kicked in and she jumped out of the caustic spew, avoiding the full onslaught. Her sister and the new Artificer were not so fortunate. The acid drenched them, and even with Sprinkle’s natural resistance, her nerves burned in searing agony! The acid also enveloped Grog, whose pained bellow echoed through the swamp.

Only Luck saved Beijor, though the Bard would have questioned his luck as acid scored his back!  Sundos grabbed Mercion and tugged her out of the Dragon’s path, but they stepped a second too late. Acid hit their sides, making the Clerics scream. Tara jumped in time to avoid the full attack, but it still hit her legs, ripping pained screams from the young Witch.

The Black Dragon descended near Azatch’s pyre, which now sizzled from his foul spittle. The beast stood  nearly sixteen feet tall when he reared his wiry body up on his hind legs. The fearsome creature stretched nearly 80 feet long with an 80 foot wingspan. Dull black scales seemingly absorbed any remnants of the torchlight. A thin face appeared almost bony, even more so with the curved horns that framed an equine muzzle.

As screams filled the night air, the Dragon spoke. I came to pay my ressspectsss to your Orchish comrade.”.

OOC:

Sprinkle & Grog take full acid damage for 58 points.

Sprinkle has Resistance, cutting that down to 29 points.

Tara & Tempest take 29 points Acid damage. Tempest’s Resistance cuts that down to 14 points damage.

Beijor will also take 14 points—along with Sundos & Mercion—because of the “near miss”

1:47, Today: The Dungeonmaster rolled 58 using 11d8.  Acid breath .

Grog dies on the spot.

Re: Vol 2, Chapter 1: “Elegies & Arrivals”

Simon took great gasping breaths, trying to offset the sprint and the fear. The sounds of the injured and the screams of fear overwhelmed his senses for a moment.

He peered around the corner of building and saw the fearsome dragon, sitting next to the remains of the pyre, and then it spoke; and the warlock's fear swirled into rage.

[Telepathy: Nimbus, hide yourself.] He didn't know where the little spirit was, but it seemed the right thing to do since she saved his life...for a moment.

Peering around the corner again, Simon spoke a simple spell, Maledictum.

Using his staff to steady himself, he stepped out and walked slowly toward the dragon His eyes remained focussed on the dragon, ignoring his friends, but hoping they would be able to move to safety.

The warlock stopped about 20 paces away from it; hoping he was far enough away to not have his head bit off. Scared as he was, Simon took a moment to admire the awful beauty of the creature.

~I can now say I have seen a dragon up close...I wonder if I will get the chance to do so before I die?~ the warlock thought to himself.

"You must be Baleful Blackfang...Murky told me that's what Irma named her pet...but I guess Grimfiddle holds your leash now.

Azatch has gone to see his ancestors...thanks to your cowardly attack from ambush. No doubt Azatch would have dealt with you in a fair fight."

Bonus action: Cast Hex, disadvantage on STR ability checks.
(PHB p 204: if spell has no perceptible effect, a creature might not know it was targeted).

20 paces = 60 feet

Corrected dragon's name to Baleful Blackfang as per DM. Don't want to be impolite to a dragon after all!

With barely a warning, acid splashed on the Genasi, biting into her skin with a fury that left her breathless. Falling to a knee from the shock, she took a shuddering breath.

Umberlee's curse! That's worse than swimming naked in a swarm of man-o-war's tentacles! Tempest, are you all right?

The cleric looked around at the carnage, the beating of the great wyrm's wings lifting dust that stuck to her burned skin, stinging her. She felt some relief when she saw that everybody was still moving... except the huge creature with horns, the acid having burned him almost to the bone. Frowning, she ran to Grog, having understood what happened.

She would not give that easy a victory to the dragon, as glowing water seemed to flow from her hands to the Minotaur.

Today: Sprinkle rolled 4 using 1d20+2.  Sprinkle initiative (fitting, as she's badly injured)

In reply to The Dungeonmaster (msg # 276):

Even as the acid blast shoots towards Telric, he raises his staff and spins it in front of him. It forms a green disc of force as the weapon moves, cutting down the deadly spray  to a minimal effect.

"Oi, bloody hells!" He growls, some acid still biting his flesh. He reaches into his bag, and drops a clockwork spider-like thing on the ground. It only has 4 legs, and is the size of a dog. Its head is a crystal orb, which seems to rotate.

"Higgins! Get to the wounded!" Telric shouts at the thing, and he runs towards the the largest group of survivors. Reaching into his bag, he pulls out one of the potions he just made with the help of Tara and Sprinkle.

The multi limbed cannon, Higgins, follows along with its maker. As soon as it gets close to a group of wounded, it emits an aura of glowing white force in a 10 foot radius. Shielding and healing itself, Telric, and any wounded within range.

OOC-reaction-absorb element. Gets resistance to acid until the end of my next action and made dex save. Total damage=14 acid damage.

Action-create protector cannon. Moves toward largest group I can with the Cannon following.

I want to give out my anti acid potions to as many PCs as I can.

Beijor saw his comrades-of-opportunity needed moments to recover and escape... he had to hold the dragon's attention.

Re: Vol 2, Chapter 1: “Elegies & Arrivals”

One minute, life had been brightening with friendship and increased hope.

And then it was like the world went dark, turned upside down, and spewed forth a nightmare.

Tumbling to the ground safe -- saved by Joshua -- Lenelle gave a short, high cry upon realizing the nature of the enemy.   The same caustic fluids that had taken Azatch's life and grievously hurt Skye streamed into the midst of her friends and allies.  And each cry of pain drove into her heart like an icy nail.

Falling with the other three, she strove to untangle as swiftly as she could.  She was scared. This ebon scaled terror that loomed and taunted them was the creature they had thought to hunt?

Pulling free, getting to her feet, she took rapid stock.  Sickened by what she beheld, blanching and gasping at the sight...  No time for that!

She spun to Joshua, put a hand on his cheek:  "I love you! Get out of here! Don't wait!" And then imploringly to Sheila Blackmoor: "I beg you!  See that he does! Please!"

And with that, Lenelle was off and moving, quickly.  Her mind registered what awful risk both Simon and Beijor were taking, as her eyes caught sight.   She gave silent prayer for protection.  As usual in times of stress, with no idea who she prayed to...

It was all the thought she could spare, making a direct line to where one ally lay horribly injured, while another, suffering her own injury, was doing whatever she could for him.

Arriving near Sprinke, Lenelle looked for a place on the woman's body which wasn't burned.  And touched her there.

The spell was rapidly cast -- she uttered just a pair of syllables, in what sounded like some Celestial dialect.  And the rose and gold hues of dawn flared about her fingers, as healing magic began its work on a healer, mending and revitalizing...

Re: Vol 2, Chapter 1: “Elegies & Arrivals”

Tempest managed to roll out of the main spray of the acid, some hitting her on the ribs through her armor, though thankfully the bite wasn't as potent due to her heritage. She heard her sister scream in pain, and was moving, her sword in hand as she reached her. "Get up Sprinkle....you've got work to do."

With that she started walking towards the dragon. She didn't have her shield - like with her gear, it was still in the temple, but like all good warriors, she had her main weapon on hand - frostbyte.

She went to attack, the left, then swung back, both hands on her sword as she sliced viciously with the longsword, a trailing arc of white mist. Where it hit the dragon, the wound showed blanching of the skin and scales as the cold edge bit and froze the area. She immediately slashed back, the sword skipping off scales.

She then pushed further, into her warrior training, turning as the sword slashed the dragoon again.

Re: Vol 2, Chapter 1: “Elegies & Arrivals”

Tara screamed in pain, and dismissed Gwyll to move far and fast away, her senses reeling.  How had the creature done so much harm so quickly?  How perfectly they'd unknowingly lined themselves up as targets for its treacherous attack!  She was glad Sprinkle still moved, but oh, the horror of those burns on that perfect, lovely skin...

She herself was badly hurt, and certainly couldn't take another attack from that thing.  She stumbled out of a line with the others as best she could, trying to think of what else she remembered about dragons.  Weaknesses...

...It might not be able to use its breath weapon again.  That was good.  It also only hit a fairly narrow area.  But it was agile as well as tough, liable to break free of webs, a dangerously mobile combatant, not vulnerable to anything she could think of...

...well, there were choices.  And one obvious one was to give the dragon another enemy to fight, and thus reduce the danger to her friends.  She drew forth a gilded flower she'd acquired, and spoke words of power.  (Words learned from that book, which might alarm the others, but no time for that now, and power was a knife, where what you cut was much more important than that you cut...)

And a being appeared next to the dragon, a humanoid figure made of twisting thorns with bright, shining eyes deep within the thorn-crowned head.  The eyes shone red, for it was fuming with anger, and vanished, reappearing in flank to the dragon and stabbing with its sword!

Init: Tara Inkfingers rolled 3 using 1d20+2 ((1)).  Well, I'm not going to change the outcome of the fight, but I may as well do what I can.

Move:  Tara moves out of the line we're in, ideally under some kind of cover.  Action:
Summon Fey!  A Fuming spirit, so it has Advantage when it teleports.  The spirit takes its turn to Fey Step next to the dragon, and attacks!

Damage is
22:17, Today: Tara Inkfingers rolled 10 using 2d6+6 ((1,3)).

And more to the point, it gives the dragon another foe to worry about, hopefully sparing Tempest from some of its wrath.

Re: Vol 2, Chapter 1: “Elegies & Arrivals”

Sskith had been lost in quiet contemplation, considering the sight before him, when his reverie was disrupted by a tickle at the back of his mind. Drums? He looked about, his red eyes searching for the sourcing of the drumming noise. Within him, ancestral memories rose from the depths of his mind, and as the sound grew louder his body moved to instincts he had not known he possessed. The blood knew though, and it called to him now. It remembered what it was to live under the weight of shadowed wings. It knew what to do now.

He was already running for cover when the bellowing roar filled the air.

As the spawn of the Divine unleashed its Breath upon the others, he and the Divine's echo ran for the cover of nearby buildings. He unslung the heavy bow from where it had rested at his back as he ran, scaled fingers finding his goose feathered arrows with practiced efficiency. He was swift, his long limbs carrying him far faster than most Scaleless could run, the Echo easily keeping pace at his side. When he had gotten well clear of the others, he turned to face this new Avatar. Already the others harried the Vutha Darastrix, blades and magic flashing as they struck back. He notched an arrow, and sighting it drew back the string. His Echo roared, the sound a paltry imitation of the Black Dragon's bellow, and yet there was power there too. Lightning crackled within his Echo's jaws, and its sister danced along the broad head of Sskith's arrow.

With a whispered word to the Matriarchs, he loosed.

The arrow flew like an angry wasp, catching the Dragon low in the belly where the armor was weakest. It had barely struck home when he followed it up with another, though this one did not dance with the lightning that his Echo had called to the first.

Matriarchs forgive him, Sskith had made his choice.

The pain alone was enough to snap his focus into place on where he was and what was going on, and it was enough for him to realize he was not up to this particular task. “A beautiful throw, Joshua, but this is the moment for the man to obey his woman! Get your ass out of here!” Sheila swatted Joshua on his back in a tone that brooked no tolerance for any back talk. The old woman saw Tara reeling from the visceral ambush, and ran to her former protĂ©gĂ©e’s side. “I’m here, Tara.”

When she saw Tara preparing a spell, Sheila nodded in understanding. She stepped in front of the younger Witch, facing the Dragon. Sheila felt a strange giddiness in her action. The old Hedgewitch saw much suffering and destruction in her life, and understood that she may very well be staring Death in the eye. Sheila thought of Tara, Joshua, and Lenelle, thought of the heroes who’d earned her respect and trust. Her thoughts went to the people of Deadwater who she’d only recently renewed ties with again. She couldn’t bear the painful notion that she’d reconciled with them just for the town to fall to an unexpected Dragon attack.

Sheila pushed down her fears and defiantly stared the Dragon in the eye. With fists clenched, Sheila summoned her own power. Kumdhuru joka.” A breeze stirred as she invoked the words of Magic. Kumdhuru joka! The sound of her words echoed with the sensation of insects crawling in the ears of everyone who could hear. KUMDHURU JOKA!!!

With the final utterance, Sheila lashed out at Baleful Blackfang with a Necromantic attack!

The Black Dragon surprised the mourners with his vicious surprise attack. However, the malicious taunt galvanized them out of their pained shock. Rage ignited within the heroes for the cruel disrespect shown by Azatch’s killer. They scrambled into action, either helping the most injured or preparing their attacks. The few townsfolk still nearby ran downhill, screaming with a fear that visibly delighted Baleful Blackfang. The Dragon laughed at the chaos he’d incited. Simon and Beijor moved as one to draw the monster’s attention, which bought precious time for their comrades.

Lenelle acted first, begging her sweetheart to flee. She barely heard his refusal as she ran toward Sprinkle with no thought of her own safety. Lenelle saw a stretch of unburned flesh on the Genasi’s ribs and touched her there. The Sun met the Sea as Celestial healing power coursed through Sprinkle in rose gold light! The divine touch spoke to the Divine within the Great-Granddaughter of Nahlazan, who felt strength return with the surety of Dawn’s first light.

While his lover healed the fallen newcomer, Joshua selflessly placed himself between the women and the Dragon. A frantic concern for Lenelle overwhelmed the sheer terror that screamed in his mind. He’d grabbed one of Cela’s enchanted Darts, and played to one of his strengths: expertise with dart throwing. Perhaps it was Lenelle’s own Celestial lineage that favored her man, as Joshua’s dart found it’s mark in the Dragon’s belly alongside a first arrow fired by an unseen sniper (OOC: Seth)!

Undaunted by the acid, Tempest encouraged her twin to help where she was most needed. Then, the Genasi moved toward Baleful with the sinuous grace of the ocean waves! She drew her favored weapon, Frostbyte, and bit deep into the Dragon’s leg! Ice bit into the leg, bringing a roar from a creature unaccustomed to such cold. Then, Tempest whirled on her feet, feinting with Frostbyte, before flowing into her next sword stroke that hit the Dragon’s wing!

Unseen by Baleful, Seth had fired an arrow that helped Joshua find an easy mark. The Lizardman defied the faith of his tribal elders, siding with the Scaleless against the Draconic descendant of the creature worshiped by his people. Seth knew he acted with a higher purpose in this fight. His faith was rewarded when the arrows laced with Echo’s lightning flew with the swiftness of the energy empowering them, finding a mark in the beast’s belly!

Like Lenelle & Sprinkle, Telric concerned himself with the welfare of the wounded. First, the eccentric Mage pulled out a bizarre construct that moved with a semi-sentience that would have impressed all present under less harrowing circumstances. Next, he withdrew a multi-pronged cannon that also obeyed his commands. The device fired blasts of bright light that hit the injured with startling accuracy! Instead of wounding then, though, the blasts reinvigorated them! Everyone hit by the Dragon’s acid felt strength flow into their limbs.

Simon coordinated a distraction with the new Bard. Deeply offended by the desecration of his friend’s funeral, Simon taunted Baleful Blackfang, Hexing the Dragon as he attempted to wound its ego. The Warlock’s Hex subtly sapped a portion of the Dragon’s physical strength.

When Lenelle healed Sprinkle, the Cleric passed the good deed forward. She answered her own Divine calling and ran toward the fallen Grog. Laying hands upon the dead Minotaur, water glistened and flowed from her hands, washing over his body. Elemental magic opened the floodgates of Life within Grog, halting his journey to the afterlife. Grog opened his eyes and hastily positioned himself where he could assess the battle.

Acting in concert with Simon, Beijor taunted Baleful! He mocked the Dragon with magically laced words. The Bard attempted to goad the monster with a magical compulsion. The magical pull danced within the Dragon’s mind, but unfortunately, Baleful proved far more resistant than the Hag Connie.

Baleful Blackfang endured effective strikes and loaded words alike from his new enemies. Then, the Dragon retaliated with stunning force! Baleful glared at Simon and roared with force that sounded as if it would shake the very trees off their roots! Simon felt the primal Dragonfear of Baleful’s Frightful Presence clutch at his heart like a Stone Giant’s fist!

Baleful glared at the Genasi who’d hurt him with her sword. His head darted at Tempest with stunning speed! The enormous maw closed on Tempest and bit deeply. The pain was like nothing Tempest had ever felt! Baleful threw her aside contemptuously, slamming her seven feet away to a painful landing!

The Dragon reared its head in Beijor’s direction. ”I hate when my sssupper talksss!” The Dragon swiped his claws at the Bard, ripping open his upper torso! His heavy claws slammed down again on the Bard and tore open his back!

Before the Dragon could finish Beijor off, though, Sheila Blackmoor stepped forward. At first, the Dragon snorted in amusement at the old woman. Any amusement vanished quickly when she invoked her own power. Baleful snapped his head back as she repeated the spell. Sheila invoked her Witchcraft, lashing out in a manner that demonstrated why Deadwater and Coven alike might have feared her. With the final utterance of her spell, the Dragon shrieked as a dark power ripped at him, causing wounds to appear across his scaled body!

Tara found the extra time she needed to attempt a spell that she’d recently studied from the Hag’s Grimoire. Although she cringed at the source, she understood that their peril overshadowed any ethical concerns. Tara cast a spell that echoed across the Planes. The breeze stirred by Sheila’s spell quickly grew in power with Tara’s spell! The wind whipped hair and loose capes alike, as a funnel drew loose leaves, forming them into a terrifying construct of thorns that stared at the Dragon with burning orbs of Faerie Fire! The Fey defender vanished, reappearing at Baleful’s side! It struck with a Sword of Thorns, raking several scales as it drew blood!

”No!” Baleful ascended forty feet into the air with a powerful flap of his wings. “I underessstimated you, but I will learn from thisss fight!” With that vow, Baleful Blackfang flew from into the night air, seemingly vanishing in the darkness. The Dragon left misery and pain in his wake.

OOC:

What a showing from you all! Baleful retreated so he could live to fight another day. Ranged fighters can try AOO at Disadvantage.

Tempest took 23 points of damage.
Beijor suffered 22 points of damage.

Simon, make a WIS save to not run off into the night from sheer terror.

Re: Vol 2, Chapter 1: “Elegies & Arrivals”

In reply to The Dungeonmaster (msg # 290):

Telric turned his staff on the dragon as the creature took to the air. "Bloody Coward!" He growled. The end of the staff glowed, and a blast of force came from the weapon. Slamming into the beast even as it tired to escape.

"Higgins, the wounded!" He called out, and the construct moved its spider limbs closer to the dragon's latest victim. Once again the crystal orb on top of Higgins pulsed, and send healing and protection to all around the mechanical being.

OOC-casting Shatter on dragon as it flies off. As a bonus action, Higgins will attempt to give more temp HP. Tempest and Beijore will have taken 10 less damage due to the 10 temp hp they had before the dragon clawed and bit them, now they will gain some more. Anyone else who already had temp hp does not gain any new ones.

21:03, Today: Telric Televentor rolled 3 using 1d8+2.  Temp Hp from cannon.

21:03, Today: Telric Televentor rolled 21 using 4d8.  Shatter with arcane firearm bonus. DC 14 con save for half damage.

Re: Vol 2, Chapter 1: “Elegies & Arrivals”

Sskith could not believe his eyes, to see one of the Vutha take to the skies in retreat. Could it truly be so, or was it merely gaining height so that it could rain the Breath of Sesskrith upon them from on high? He had listened well to the stories and songs of the Dirgesingers, and did not think that the fight was so easily won. Surely the one who named itself Baleful would return, to strike down upon them as it already had. He reached into his quiver, and drew forth another grey fletched arrow, notching it and drawing in one smooth motion. At his side, his Echo hissed, and the force of the Dragon's will crackled and sizzled upon the arrow's tip. Sskith loosed, and watched as the sparking arrow flew straight and true into the the Vutha's wing. Quick as thought, he drew and loosed again, but the second arrow found only darkness.

"Eyessss to the sky!"

He growled, his voice almost too bestial to be understood as the battle fervor took him.

"We need light, or elssssse it will ssstrike from darknesssss!"

He had been raised on his people's lore and stories, and knew well the mind of what they now faced. Of course, knowing a tale and facing it were two very different things.

OOC: 1st attack hits on a 20 for 6 piercing and 3 lightning, 2nd misses

Sskith finds an alleyway to hide in, or a door.
