Re: Chapter 1: Battered Down & Run Aground
Simon nods, "Then we travel. Keep an eye out for more border totems. Let's not cross any borders if we can avoid it.
"Now, while we travel, let me tell you about the Bricklayers Three:
"One day, three brothers, masons all, got into an argument on the job site. Being brothers it was a fairly meaningless argument: Which of them was the strongest. They debated, the argued, and they even came to blows, and, trust me, a three-way fist fight is quite humorous to behold. Finally, tired of it all, their foreman came up with a fairly obvious and simple contest: See who could throw a brick the farthest.
"Now, these brothers, as may be apparent already, were not Sage material. In fact, they thought sage was something you cooked with. Well, the bright one did, at least.
"So, they agreed to the contest and stepped out from the wall they were building, each with his brick. And they started their distance contest...as a height contest.
"The first brother threw his brick into the air as hard as he could. It went up, 3, 4, 5 feet before coming back down smack on the head of the brother who had thrown it (and who was watching intently to see how high he'd gotten). A cleric was sent for, of course.
"Rather than wait, the second brother did HIS throw. Up it went 9, 10, 11 feet, almost out of sight (to be fair they WERE facing in the direction of the sun), and then it, too, came down. By the time he could see it, he almost managed to step out of the way. Almost. But the cleric was already on the way, and could surely repair that foot, after the other's head.
"And, finally, the last brother, oldest, largest, and, presumably, strongest. He gave a good wind up and threw his brick. And, sure enough, his brick went past the 12 foot mark, past the 15 foot mark, and well out of sight. The foreman grabbed him by his collar and pulled him back a couple of feet and they waited, but it never came back down.
"The oldest won, of course. And the cleric, when hearing what had happened and why, prayed mightily for the brothers, and, more importantly, for everyone around them...just in case."
