Chapter 3: Ghouls & Groves!
A flurry of activity ensued, as locals and adventurers scrambled to aid the pair facing a large pack of ghouls! “Hey! Hey, Hey, HEY!!! YOU LEAVE THE CAT-LADY ALONE!” Pockets sighted the ghoul who threatened Cela with a hand crossbow. The bolt flew unerringly, hitting the undead fiend’s throat! Faster than the eye could follow, he’d reloaded and hit the ghoul again!
The ghouls shuffled closer toward Cela. Their fetid breath filled her sensitive nostrils, making the gorge rise in her throat. Five ghouls surrounded Cela, the rest pressing on them from behind so they, too, could eat. A ghoul with limp dark hair and bolts jutting from his throat raked at the brave Tabaxi. His claws tore her flesh, nearly shredding her side!
The scent of freshly spilled blood agitated the other four ghouls. They all pressed forward, slashing at her, but the nimble Monk swayed side-to-side, dodging the remaining attacks!
Azatch saw Cela’s peril and acted boldly. His lower fangs jutted out as he grinned and jumped off the wall! The Half-Orc’s powerful legs carried him away from the platform, and he landed squarely on the shoulders of one of the five ghouls surrounding the Monk. The ghoul’s collarbone snapped as Azatch’s weight knocked him to the ground!
Cela spat several choice curses in Goblin-tongue after the ghoul slashed her side. She smoothly dodged the rest, before she repaid the one who’d hurt her. She threw the flask of holy water hard enough to shatter the glass against the ghoul, hitting him squarely in the chest! The rotting gray flesh sizzled as the holy water burned like acid. The ghoul shrieked in agony, dying the True Death.
Staying behind, Grog tried to help another way. He threw down his rope for Josh & Cela. A pity that Cela was preoccupied, and Josh couldn’t tie a knot with one good arm.
However, the gesture wasn’t a loss. Sundos ran over and slid down the silk rope. In the confusion, he didn’t know who threw it, but he was able to reach the ground quickly enough to help. He raised his arms and called out in a loud voice, "Flee, you unholy ghouls! The Power of Pelor compels you to flee from me!" A chill ran through the living who heard Sundos’ bold rebuke, as the undead hesitated before the Power of Pelor! Eight ghouls howled and ran away from Sundos as fast as their legs would carry them. Still, Sundos felt a force permeating the area that bolstered the resistance of the remaining twelve.
“Damn,” Skye muttered as she took several arrows and stuck them in the wood in front of her. That’s when she saw the numbers of undead. Loading her bow with two arrows, she sighted up the closest ghoul, firing. The arrows hit his back and the back of his head. His legs twitched three times, then stopped, as her arrows finished off the ghoul underneath Azatch’s feet.
Simon summoned an Eldritch Blast, but missed the ghoul. He shared another parable to the chagrin of Georg. If he’d looked, though, the Warlock would have seen the corners of Connor’s mouth twitch in the beginning of a smile. The story distracted him from his fear, and the youth’s face showed the promise of admiration of the flashy newcomer. (OOC: Simon will get a +1 on Charisma checks with Connor.)
Up above, Lenelle held her hand to her face as she watched the ghouls threaten Josh, Cela, and Azatch. Sundos’ miracle stirred Lenelle, though, snapping her out of her distraction. She silently chided herself, then remembered her own connection with Celestial power. The sorceress channeled her innate power, looking inhumanly beautiful as her skin softly glowed like pale amber! Lenelle held out her hands, and twin bolts of radiant light flew! They hit the two ghouls near Cela who hadn’t been turned. The first ghoul exploded in a bright burst of glowing embers and ashes! Although the second ghoul remained on its feet, it looked badly wounded.
Mercion cried out, “PELOR! PROTECT YOUR DEVOTED SONS AND THE WOMAN WHO AIDED THEM!” The Priestess shuddered, her eyelids fluttering as she called down divine power to protect them. The ground between Sundos and Joshua was lit as if the midday sun shone over them, A large celestial creature in shining armor hovered over them, as she unfurled wings of blinding light! No one could look directly at the angelic being, especially those ghouls who hadn’t fled Sundos. The angel’s light burned the undead...
Three ghouls disintegrated before the awesome light of the Guardian of Faith! Then, the angelic guardian faded from the Material plane.
OOC:
Sundos turned 8 ghouls.
Of the 12 who remained, our heroes (& Mercion) destroyed 6 more ghouls.
