Chapter 3: Ghouls & Groves!

Azatch saw Cela’s peril and acted boldly. His lower fangs jutted out as he grinned and jumped off the wall! The Half-Orc’s powerful legs carried him away from the platform, and he landed squarely on the shoulders of one of the five ghouls surrounding the Monk. The ghoul’s collarbone snapped as Azatch’s weight knocked him to the ground!

OOC:

01:20, Today: The Dungeonmaster, on behalf of Azatch, rolled 13 using 2d6+4.  Damage from jump.
01:16, Today: The Dungeonmaster rolled 13 using 1d20+1.  Strength check for ghoul.
01:15, Today: The Dungeonmaster, on behalf of Azatch, rolled 21 using 1d20+6.  Athletics check, Jump on Ghoul.

Chapter 3: Ghouls & Groves!

Mercion cried out, “PELOR! PROTECT YOUR DEVOTED SONS AND THE WOMAN WHO AIDED THEM!” The Priestess shuddered, her eyelids fluttering as she called down divine power to protect them. The ground between Sundos and Joshua was lit as if the midday sun shone over them, A large celestial creature in shining armor hovered over them, as she unfurled wings of blinding light! No one could look directly at the angelic being, especially those ghouls who hadn’t fled Sundos. The angel’s light burned the undead...

OOC:

Mercion cast Guardian of Faith. Any ghouls who fail a DEX save take 20 radiant damage.

Chapter 3: Ghouls & Groves!

A flurry of activity ensued, as locals and adventurers scrambled to aid the pair facing a large pack of ghouls! “Hey! Hey, Hey, HEY!!! YOU LEAVE THE CAT-LADY ALONE!” Pockets sighted the ghoul who threatened Cela with a hand crossbow. The bolt flew unerringly, hitting the undead fiend’s throat! Faster than the eye could follow, he’d reloaded and hit the ghoul again!

The ghouls shuffled closer toward Cela. Their fetid breath filled her sensitive nostrils, making the gorge rise in her throat. Five ghouls surrounded Cela, the rest pressing on them from behind so they, too, could eat. A ghoul with limp dark hair and bolts jutting from his throat raked at the brave Tabaxi. His claws tore her flesh, nearly shredding her side!

The scent of freshly spilled blood agitated the other four ghouls. They all pressed forward, slashing at her, but the nimble Monk swayed side-to-side, dodging the remaining attacks!

Cela spat several choice curses in Goblin-tongue after the ghoul slashed her side. She smoothly dodged the rest, before she repaid the one who’d hurt her. She threw the flask of holy water hard enough to shatter the glass against the ghoul, hitting him squarely in the chest! The rotting gray flesh sizzled as the holy water burned like acid. The ghoul shrieked in agony, dying the True Death.

Staying behind, Grog tried to help another way. He threw down his rope for Josh & Cela. A pity that Cela was preoccupied, and Josh couldn’t tie a knot with one good arm.

However, the gesture wasn’t a loss. Sundos ran over and slid down the silk rope. In the confusion, he didn’t know who threw it, but he was able to reach the ground quickly enough to help. He raised his arms and called out in a loud voice, "Flee, you unholy ghouls! The Power of Pelor compels you to flee from me!" A chill ran through the living who heard Sundos’ bold rebuke, as the undead hesitated before the Power of Pelor! Eight ghouls howled and ran away from Sundos as fast as their legs would carry them. Still, Sundos felt a force permeating the area that bolstered the resistance of the remaining twelve.

“Damn,” Skye muttered as she took several arrows and stuck them in the wood in front of her. That’s when she saw the numbers of undead. Loading her bow with two arrows, she sighted up the closest ghoul, firing. The arrows hit his back and the back of his head. His legs twitched three times, then stopped, as her arrows finished off the ghoul underneath Azatch’s feet.

Simon summoned an Eldritch Blast, but missed the ghoul. He shared another parable to the chagrin of Georg. If he’d looked, though, the Warlock would have seen the corners of Connor’s mouth twitch in the beginning of a smile. The story distracted him from his fear, and the youth’s face showed the promise of admiration of the flashy newcomer. (OOC: Simon will get a +1 on Charisma checks with Connor.)

Up above, Lenelle held her hand to her face as she watched the ghouls threaten Josh, Cela, and Azatch. Sundos’ miracle stirred Lenelle, though, snapping her out of her distraction. She silently chided herself, then remembered her own connection with Celestial power. The sorceress channeled her innate power, looking inhumanly beautiful as her skin softly glowed like pale amber! Lenelle held out her hands, and twin bolts of radiant light flew! They hit the two ghouls near Cela who hadn’t been turned. The first ghoul exploded in a bright burst of glowing embers and ashes! Although the second ghoul remained on its feet, it looked badly wounded.

Three ghouls disintegrated before the awesome light of the Guardian of Faith! Then, the angelic guardian faded from the Material plane.

OOC:

Sundos turned 8 ghouls.

Of the 12 who remained, our heroes (& Mercion) destroyed 6 more ghouls.

Cela smashes the other flask into a ghoul and seems to move even faster when dodging their strikes

"Get Joshua inside!  Hurry."

Action: Throw flask
Bonus Action: 1 Ki point for patient defense (dodge action, attacks against Cela are at disadvantage)

If it's safe to move closer to the wall (next to Sundos) without provoking AoO, I will.

With either feline agility or a dash action Cela can move 40 ft + climb the wall in one round, but being surrounded/out of range of allies is the bigger concern.

08:55, Today: Cela rolled 22,2 using d20+5,2d6.  throw flask.
Oof that damage roll
08:51, Today: Cela rolled 22 using 1d20+3.  initiative.

Lenelle couldn't help but gasp at the angelic avatar, come at the behest of Deadwater's priestess.   She had heard plenty of priests talk, never seen anything like that before.   Roughly as impressive was Sundos' turning -- which sent nearly half their number fleeing back into the bog.

Victory suddenly seemed more than attainable.  She quickly cast again;  aiming the divine light for one of the ghouls menacing Cela and Sundos.    Her aim was off, initially; yet once again something - someone - served to correct it...

Lenelle Toreth rolled 21 using 1d20+2.
Bonus action- Favored by the gods - Lenelle Toreth rolled 5 using 2d4.  +5 to hit

Chapter 3: Ghouls & Groves!

Grog exhales through his nostrils,  a concerned look on his face... plus squinting as things were a bit hard to see for a while.  Grog leans over the wall enough to be visible as he reaches his arms forward with his side of the rope.
"Joshua!"  Assuming he glances up, Grog will point to the rope, wrap it quickly over his chest and shoulder one-handed, pulls it snug, then around his (same) arm and grips tightly.  With his other arm, he points at Joshua himself, Grog's wrapped up arm, then offers a thumbs up as he gestures pulling the rope upwards.  "Hold tight.  Hurts."

((OOC: With an excess of slack, a knot may not be needed.  Was trying to avoid making an injured person make a strength check though.  If it wasn't obvious, Grog was making an assist action help Joshua make a one-armed rope check.))

The first Ghoul to end their turn close enough to trigger it will have Grog's Stone Rune triggered against them.  At the bottom of the wall though, that range is reduced to 24' from Grog assuming my basic trig holds true.

((EDIT: Grog rolled 3 using 1d20+1.  Initiative .

Edit 2: Are Ghouls even Charm-able?  May auto-fail that Stone Rune.))

GRRAAAWRRR!” If the ghouls had minds, they may have felt the fear that seized the watchmen of Deadwater as Azatch howled!

The Barbarian rushed at one of the few remaining ghouls that still threatened Cela. His powerful hand swiped, but the claws missed. However, his spiked tail speared the ghoul in the back!

Chapter 3: Ghouls & Groves!

Cela smashed her second flask of holy water into the ghoul in front of her. The undead horror’s skin bubbled as the blessed water burned, and the ghoul shrieked in a high-pitched keen! Inspired by Mercion’s miracle, Lenelle felt victory at hand. She knew that Divine Magic would ensure victory and summoned two extra Guiding Bolts! She should have missed, but a power greater than herself seemed to guide the bolts back on course. They obliterated the ghoul that Cela wounded with the holy water, leaving smoking cinders at the Tabaxi’s feet!

Simon intended to help, but the remnants of the fog obscured his shot and he missed.

Skye, the Ranger also known as Traill, proved more efficient in her attack. She calmly drew her bowstring, and another arrow flew straight into the ghoul’s spine! It shuffled a little more slowly. She ignored Pockets gawking at her archery skills.

Nearby, Mercion wasn’t prepared to summon another Guardian of Faith. Instead, she cast the same spell as Lenelle, but with none of the Half-Elf’s aim. Two gleaming bolts of divine light flew into the trees, illuminating the fog-cloaked woods, before fizzling out.

Sundos risked his own safety by laying hands on Cela. He called upon Pelor, who heard him and healed his companion’s injuries. The Monk moved in an even faster blur as she dodged ghoul attacks.

Pockets complimented Traill’s skill, before displaying his own with his hand crossbow. The bolt hit the monster’s right eye. Like Magic, he’d reloaded quickly and sank another bolt into the thing’s arm. How did he do that?!

Azatch summoned his primal rage and lashed out at the ghoul wounded by the Halflings. His claws missed, but the spiked tail lashed like a whip, hitting the injured ghoul hard enough to finish him off!

The ghouls snarled at Cela, an all-consuming hunger compelling them to maintain their attack. Their moans would almost be pitiable if they didn’t intend to eat her and her companions. They lashed at the Monk, but she calmly parried their weak attacks.

Two of the ghouls were engaged with Azatch. Their claws bounced off his hide without drawing blood. He was too far into his rage to even notice!

Grog readied a Stone Rune for any ghoul that closed on Joshua and Sundos. He also coaxed the injured man into grasping the rope with his good hand. Joshua nodded and gripped it tightly. Grog could pull him up as needed.

Chapter 3: Ghouls & Groves!

Cela unleashed a flurry of blows with a burst of inhuman speed! Her claws slashed once, twice at the ghoul in front of her! A ghoul on her right grasped at her, but she sensed his movement and hit him hard in the chest. The blow knocked the ghoul flat on his back in the soft swamp soil!

Up above, Simon finally fixed a ghoul in his sights. The Warlock unleashed an Eldritch Blast that torero one of the ghoul’s shoulders! The undead creature shuffled limply, only barely managing to remain upright. Connor gasped in wide-eyed wonder at the casual display of power.

Sundos swung at the ghoul with his mace, but it shuffled out of reach at the last second.

Grog pulled Joshua up with the rope as easily as Simon or Sundos would draw a bucket of water from a well! The Minotaur hauled him over the gate, while fellow watchmen set him on the catwalk.

Spurred by their pending victory, Lenelle reached into her reserves of magic and  summoned two additional bolts of radiant light. The first guiding bolt missed. That didn’t matter, as the second bolt decimated the ghoul just hit by Simon, completely destroying his upper body in a spray of rancid guts. Two legs no longer connected by a lower torso flopped to the ground!

Pockets hit the ghoul still engaged by Cela with an unerring shot from his hand crossbow. The bolt sank into the back of the monster’s skull. Combined with the deadly blows from Cela, the ghoul couldn’t sustain any further damage. It fell to the ground, at last truly dead. Another bolt hit the ghoul knocked to the ground.

Azatch raged, caught empty air with his claws, and stomped on the prone ghoul. The lashing of a spiked tail finished the undead thing off, as the spikes bashed in the ghoul’s brains!

At last, the remaining ghouls were vanquished! Joshua and Deadwater were safe once more.

Until the remaining ghouls returned.

OOC:

That’s the end of combat!

What do you all do now?
