The Setting

487 - Merlin gives Excalibur, the Sword of Victory, to King Uther of Logres, making him the High King, like his brother and father before him.

489 - Uther and his army march on his vassal Duke Gorlois of Corwall.  Uther is badly outnumbered but approaches Gorlois in parlay with Merlin and shows him Excalibur.  In return for his surrender, Duke Gorlois is given all the land to the sea.

490 - Duke Gorlois brings Duchess Ygraine to Court, Uther attacks and defeats the huge Saxon army at the Battle of Lindsey.  Saxon Kings Eosa and Octa captured.  Uther lusts after Ygraine and the Cornish party flee Uther's hospitality without leave.

491 - Uther sends his army to siege Duke Gorlois at Castle Terrabil.  In a surprise attack at night, Duke Gorlois kills Uther's son, Prince Madoc before being killed himself.  Terrabil falls to Uther's forces and later Castle Tintagel and Duchess Ygraine surrender.  Uther marries Ygraine.

492 - Ygraine is pregnant, claiming Gorlois lay with her the night he died even though he was in a different castle besieged by Uther's forces.  Merlin steals 'Gorlois' and Ygraine's child.  Several knights are put on trial for treason but found innocent.  Merlin sentenced to death and exiled in absentia.

493 - Kings Octa and Eosa escape.  Uther is sick.

494 - The Saxons attack unopposed, the Lords hiding in their castles and Uther unwell.

495 - Uther remains sick, is rumored to be dying.  Uther decides to fight the Saxons at the Battle of St. Albans.  Uther is victorious.  At the victory feast someone uses a magical substance to poison the food and drink, killing off Uther and the mass of Logres leaders.

496 - The Sword in the Stone appears in London, proclaiming whosoever can pull it forth will be the next King of Briton.  Queen Ygraine and her youngest daughter Morgan retreat to the Nunnery at Amesbury.

497-499 - King Idres and Prince Mark of Cornwall conquer many neighboring castles and territories.  The Saxons accept tribute from Salisbury and fight each other.  The Irish invading Gales.

500-504 - King Idres and Prince Mark of Cornwall conquer many neighboring castles and territories, threatening Salisbury from the West.  King Nanteleod and of Escavalon and his sons conquer Estragales and other areas in the West, loosely allying with Salisbury and Silchester, the remains of Logres.  The Saxons invade from the South and East, moving up the Thames valley and threatening Salisbury.

505 - The player knights are knighted.

The PCs

You will be playing Cornish knights, opposed to Merlin's puppet King, Arthur.  You will have about 5 years prior to when he historically pulled the sword from the stone and became King of Logres, in 510.  During that time and after, your actions could easily affect Arthur's success or lack thereof.

Your fathers played a role during Uther's reign and the early Anarchy Period that followed.  Between the events in which they were involved and the animosity between Cornwall and Salisbury/Logres/Uther/Arthur, there will be plenty of reasons to be opposed to this upstart Merlin plans to use to take control of Britain.

Everyone starts with a small manor sufficient for providing for your upkeep . . . when the harvests are good.  If you live through the battles that are coming, you could easily do quite well financially.

Chivalry (as opposed to Honor) is at least five years in the future and Romance may never take hold.  So concentrate your starting points on things that will be useful in staying alive and gathering information (intrigue, courtesy, recognize, heraldry, and awareness).  You are unlikely in this period to successfully woo any socially-significant women.  Honor and Glory are more likely to win their hearts or the hearts of those who arrange their marriages.
