Welcome!  I am still working on setup, but figured I would add people in so they can start to look around.  Ask any questions you have.  I will be putting up more background material and character creation stuff.

Feel free to pick a name, either from the list in the notices or elsewhere.

Nice to be here and see you all again - and to meet all you new players.

I used to play Sir Gracian but will now be playing Sir Abloc. Who he is and what kind of man he is I am not quite sure of but I am planning on keeping him alive and find him a wife!

If he one day end up with any surviving sons then they will probarbly soft and sing songs about Romance instead of chopping off people's heads like their old dad used to.

And I never really learned the rules so I am just glad our Storyteller roll the dice. I am not sure though if character generation will be as in Core Book or if he has something special in mind.

OK, I posted the character creation rules.  Statistics and Skills are very important, especially early on.  Sword, Lance, and Horsemanship will help keep you alive in battle, as will your Damage rate, which should be 5d6 for melee weapons.

Tournament is a useless skill until at least the first tournament is help in 510.  Faerie Lore will be useful, but not everyone necessarily needs it.  If people can specialize a little it might help.  Maybe one or two people are good at Intrigue, others at Faerie Lore, etc.  'Soft' skills will absolutely come into play and can be very useful but prior to the coming of Arthur the mass of your Glory and Wealth will come from Battles.  There will certainly be other adventures but maybe less lethal than fighting.  Battle is useful for leading troops in Battle, not something the PCs will be doing initially.

Please select an Avatar and write up a basic description of your character.  It should include general appearance, obvious attitudes, and MUST include values of all Personality Traits, Passions, Statistics, and Skills 16 and higher.  These are what you are known for.

I still have lots of work to do on figuring out background for everyone and what your fathers did and what they told you.  I also need to create a host of Cornwall NPCs, available ladies, and figure out how to fit everyone into the coming events.  So no big rush right now.  :)

Sir Daron is mostly complete I think. He's the son of Sir Arcol and his squire is Brice. His manor is at Jagent.

Sir Daron has an enigmatic smile and bright green eyes and besides being Valorous (16) his most noteworthy trait is that he leans Selfish (14). His family were once far richer than they are now and it has left Sir Daron with a strong appreciation of the value of money and a determination that the lack of it will not bring his family to the edge of ruin again. He has quite a good head for Stewardship (10), Intrigue (10) and Gaming (12) with the latter a sport he enjoys far more than hunting.

From both family heritage and inheriting a Marvelous Listening Ring Sir Daron has a shrewd streak and is rarely surprised (Awareness 14.)

Sir Abloc rolled a Marvelous Listening Ring as well?

Can I roll again so each family heirloom ends up unique?

And apart from that Sir Abloc, son of Kenyr, is almost done as well. His (only) notable trait is being Valorous (16). His family was never wealthy and his father constantly pushed him to succeed. His father wasnt .. quite .. Christian. Well he was but he hadnt forgotten The Old Ways and tried to teach his son, Abloc, about The Old Ways, but what Abloc was taught never really stuck in his head (Religion: Pagan 4), yet it made hi quite the storyteller (Orate 15).

Still a work in progress. Feel free to comment or make suggestion :)

Sir Aeddan is basically done.  His name is pronounced like "Ethan." The image I have in my head of him is Domhnall Gleason -- tall, sort of gangly, red-haired, with ears that stick out.

Aeddan was the oldest (by a number of years) of the kids in his family, with a father who loved to tell stories about his "glory days" of fighting.  Aeddan could recite any/all of those stories at any time, down to names & heraldry, although oddly he's never met any of his father's valiant fighting buddies.  Mother was an observant Christian, from whom Aeddan got decent knowledge of the religion (as well as the ability to read Latin).  He's 21, though, so his strongest traits are being fairly horny and unreasonably fearless.  He's totally inexperienced in the world, and he's still a little squishy on what exactly he believes in.

Oh, and Aeddan's mom gave him a holy relic: a Finger of St Alban.  It's kind of gross, but he keeps it with him in case it might someday prove useful.

I am going to post some other background information.  Little scenes your fathers talked about.  Mostly to give you a feel for the current situation and give you some fodder for your feelings toward those around you.

As I am going through the background leading up to game start I am also forming the backbone of the campaign itself.  One of the themes will be your fathers' loyalty to Cornwall, and especially to Duchess Ygraine, who became Uther's wife (likely as a means of survival).  This is something likely to translate down to the PCs and it will be a mutual thing.

As I was going through this, I decided that her youngest daughter, Morgan, would be a useful person who could assist in the magical side of things, mainly to counter Merlin to some extent.  I have a potential player who may be interested in playing Morgan, but I wanted to float the idea in case anyone has any issues with having a witch around.  I need to figure out the Pendragon magic system (or create/modify my own), but that is a problem for another day.  That character, whether PC or NPC, may not show up for a while in-game,  haven't figured out that much of the early story yet.  :)

Oof...

As a player I'm definitely not against a witch character but I posted in the trial that young Sir Daron remembered Merlin's treachery and Ygraine's bloodlust in wanting our character's fathers executed and it has left him distrustful towards both magicians and women.

Having a character who is not only a magic using woman but a daughter of the despised Ygraine might make things tricksy!

I am new to Pendragon so I have no idea how the magic system or having a witch with us will affect the campaign. Part of me finds it interesting while another part of me fear it will kill the "magic as a mystery in the background"-vibe that I like about Pendragon.

Having a PC hate/fear/distrust another PC can lead to interesting roleplay and dynamics in a campaign. And it can also do the opposite. I suppose I am trying to say that I will leave that to you guys to decide.

Thanks for asking our input on this, ToT.  I think it'd be weird and interesting to have a witch join up with us.  It'd definitely throw Aeddan for a loop -- women are strange, vaguely dangerous creatures anyway, and one who has magical powers would seem particularly dangerous.  But also, like, GIRL!  I'm totally willing to play that out and see how it goes.

I am not sure yet whether the player will even be able to join, but Morgan herself is likely to play a role regardless.  I will be posting more background, which should give you a fuller picture of your fathers' adventures.  These will all be based on stories they told you as they wouldn't be the sorts of things you would have been old enough to participate in.

OK, all of our knights and fathers now have names.  When you get the chance, go to Character Details and Edit Description and add any basic physical description, things people would know about you, and any Statistics, Passions, Traits, or Skills 16+.  These are what you are known for.  Make sure you have an avatar.

I have a few more stories coming up and then we can start things off.  While you were present at the Trial, you only learn the other stories in pieces over the years.  Now that you are older, and maybe wiser, your characters will have perhaps a better perspective on events past.  Even your fathers were not aware of the Tintagel events until long afterward.

The most recent story is the point at which your fathers reach the high-watermark of their careers.  With the Duke dead, the Duchess about to be married off, and a liege (Uther) for whom their respect is very limited, they start to decline.  The trial for treason, even though they are exonerated, leaves them scarred and does little to improve their opinion of Uther.  They have little choice but to follow Uther, but fortunately he is not long for this world.

Ygraine felt betrayed by her husband's most loyal knights, only to learn that they, like she, were ensorcelled by Merlin (who she figures out turned Uther into the image of her husband).  There is an expression about a woman scorned . . .

Rolling UNDER your score = Success
Rolling EXACTLY your score = Critical
Rolling OVER your score = Failure
Rolling 20 (unless your score is 20+) = Fumble

If your score is greater than 20, you add 1 to the die roll for each point above 20, so a score of 25 means 15-20 criticals, there is no chance of Failure or Fumble.

Starting Glory, right . . .

You inherit 10% of your fathers' Glory.  They were all notable knights with 2000-4000 Glory.  So roll 10d20 and add 200, that is your starting glory.  At the conclusion of the feast, you will get your 1000 for becoming a knight and you can then add 1 point to anything you like.

On the plus side, I (as GM) do not normally bring back NPCs from other (especially unrelated) games.  You may run into new versions of 'historical' figures like Praetor Jonathal of Dorset, he just won't have a daughter Galleria.  And someone like Fiona, who I made up completely, would not be in this game.

Sir Abloc survived the initial charge?? My hero! :)

Question: How does Checks work? Can I gain multiple Checks in a skill (Let's say Awareness) and then during the Winter Phase perhaps end up increasing Awareness by more than one? Or is it more like I just have more chances to roll but can only increase Awareness by one?

(Does my question make sense?)

My fellow knights:  Sir Aeddan's not relishing the idea of killing that running suspect outright, and it seems unlikely we'll get the truth from him if we ask whether he's a spy.  Perhaps we could *ahem* request his company for the next few days?  I thought we'd have our squires keep an eye on him, be sure he doesn't run off, and let him help with tasks if he'd like to.  Our primary goal is to keep him from spreading the word to the good folks of Bristol; assuming he doesn't give us trouble, he can be released once the battle is concluded.  Your thoughts?

That sort of campaigns can be magnificiently fun. I run a Victorian-era GURPS Monster Hunters campaign. They have been to Ceylon (during a rebellion led by a Weretiger), India (searching for a cave long ago sealed by Alexander the Great), Abyssinia (did battle against hordes of natives and found a lost Atlantean Temple) and to an island off the west coast of Scotland to stop a terrible plague. Of course they have been to London as well and done the usual slumming in East End but they havnt been to the US yet.

Re: OOC: The Hearth

Just a quick clarification:

I just gave you the 2-minute version of Gwendolen's tale.  So she told you "Blodeuyn is being held at a manor south of the river, named Barford, and Loorette is being held somewhere north and east of here, although I don't know exactly where."

She can explain that she knows this because all three were brought by the raiders to Sarum, where the knights were gathering to head off to war with the Saxons.  Loorette left with a group heading up the road North-East out of Sarum in the direction of Levcomagus.  So Gwendolen is pretty sure Loorette is east of Codford and probably north.

Gwendolen and Blodeuyn headed west along the good road toward Vagon with a different group and then Blodeuyn and part of the group split off and headed south to Barford, a name Gwendolen learned as they rode.  Gwendolen then continued with the remainder of the group to Vagon and then across the bridge to Codford.

I mentioned the specific location of Blodeuyn because it is not significantly out of your way and is close enough that Gwendolen knew it.  Finding and rescuing Loorette would probably be an adventure in-and-of-itself.  Best guess is that she is probably in a manor along the Bourne River, from Porton up to Kimpton, or possible farther east.

The advantage to trying to find and rescue her now is that there currently aren't many knights around to stop you, something that may not occur again.  Also, rescuing her prior to her being married is probably a good thing.  The disadvantage is that the longer you stay, the higher the chance of discovery and the possibility of the Salibury knights returning from their attack on the Saxons.

You can finish your raid, verifying if Blodeuyn is actually at Barford and if she knows anything more about Loorette's whereabouts.  Once you get the goods passed Vagon and the road is essentially clear until Cornwall, the three of you (or add Sir Rhydwyn to make four), can head back in search of her.

Re: OOC: The Hearth

I clarified the intrigue information in the Chapter 1.3 thread and updated Map 5 to show your current understanding of the situation in Salisbury.  There are 21 manors you would consider to be the most likely places they took Loorette based on the road they took leaving Sarum.  Although the Saxons did not burn and pillage everything in the 'shaded' area, that was the extent of the raiding.

Information on who-is-who can be found in the Setting thread.  Nanteleod is the King of Escavalon, who has been expanding outward, taking Estregales, etc. and is something of a champion for Logres (Salisbury, Dorset, Silchester, Kent, London, etc.).  Countess Ellen is Earl Roderick's [deceased] widow, who is regent of Salisbury pending the ascension of her son Robert (in about 4-5 years).  Kings Cedric, Port, and Ælle are Saxon kings of Wessex, Dorset, and Sussex, respectively.

Sir Daron's idea is absolutely fabulous.  Two notes: A traveling bard is the one most likely to have current information on knights and manors in Salisbury, although King Idres probably has information as well through his spies.  It is quite possible Loorette was set to marry the son of a knight rather than a knight.  So you would need to look at manors with unwed males in the ~15+ range.

Re: OOC: The Hearth

It would be deeply entertaining to hire a bard -- just not as much fun as creating a maiden out of an insecure 21-year-old man  :)  Sir Aeddan declares he's too tall and would therefore convince nobody, but let it be understood that he just feels threatened by emasculation.  He's young.

I am going to be at the beach through Saturday, but should still be able to post.

I was waiting to see if anyone had any issues/suggestions with the current plan before moving on.  I generally wait 2 days after last post to see if anyone has anything else to say if there is no obvious agreement.

So, who wants to be first through the door?  <|:-)

Re: OOC: The Hearth

Excellent discussion, I am just going to wait on Sir Aeddan's response before moving on.

I want to make clear the position as you understand it.  I updated Map 1 to show the events of this year regarding the Saxons.  The Saxons came up from the south from what is labelled as Wessex on Map 1.  King Nanteleod and his Escavalon knights/troops came south-east from Escavalon to Salisbury and joined forces with the Salisbury knights.

There was a semi-battle at Levcomagus in Salisbury before the two armies headed east and fought again at Royston (which is actually listed as Hertford on the Game Map, just above London).  King Nanteleod then headed north to Hertford, which is listed as Royston on the Game Map.  Meanwhile, the Saxons you are after headed back toward Sussex and/or Dorset (I might have said Wessex earlier).

You have no idea what path the Saxons took, but you can assume that they passed through London by now and are heading either straight south overland, along the Royal Road west, back toward Salisbury, or along the Royal Road east toward Kent and then around the coast on foot or in boats.  The Salisbury and Escavalon knights who are returning home after their 40+ day stint are almost certainly going to be heading along the Royal Road going west (which makes it more likely the Saxons are on a different course).

There are probably 2000-2500 Saxon footmen in the army.  Unlike the British knights/footmen, they tend to spread out across the country when marching to scavenge and pillage, but camp together at night.  So you could easily stumble across a band of 10-12 Saxons with many more such groups in the area.

London is ~70 miles from your current position.  As you will be in enemy territory and potentially running into returning Logres/Escavalon knights or a horde of Saxons, you can go carefully and make ~15 miles per day or be reckless and make 20+2d6 miles per day.  Moving carefully greatly reduces your chance of an encounter, moving recklessly almost guarantees an encounter of some kind each day.  In Salisbury there were no knights to speak of so you were able to make much better time relatively safely.

None of you are familiar with the terrain or roads east of Salisbury, other than knowing that the ones on the Game Map exist.  It is probably safe to assume that the Saxons will be back to the Saxon settlements in Sussex/Dorset in 5-7 days, moving at ~5 miles per day through the woods or 10 miles per day on good roads.

As a side note, if you are captured and ransomed, your ransom is £18.  Replacing your charger:  £10.  Replacing your Rouncy:  £1.  Replacing your Sumpter:  100d.  Replacing your armor:  £2.

Re: OOC: The Hearth

Dear Sir Aeddan

Here are a few words of wisdom from players (Daron and I) that has survived ToT's previous Pendragon campaigns. So pay attention?

ToT is a master of portraying Arthurian legends and the dangerous women in the legends. So for the love of God dont let your character speak to Morgana. In fact dont let her know he is even there. Hide. Duck and cover. Cower in fear even. But dont speak to her. Dont let her touch your character. In fact whenever you are told your character see an intelligent maiden with high APP then RUUUN. And I do mean run!

There is a reason to why Sir Daron refused to ride with Morgana (and why he was doomed the moment she touched him - sorry Sir Daron but you know it is true). There is a reason to why Sir Abloc is fearful of being turned into a frog.

I am just saying that while Daron and Abloc will soon be cut down by knights or captured and tortured by Saxons then it is Sir Aeddan that is in trouble. And he doesnt even know it.

Poor guy.

Daron - please tell Aeddan I am right. Please? Let us try and help this poor man.

Jutland?  I read "Jutland" and immediately think "Billund."  I do remember seeing a lot of agricultural land on the way to Billund, though.  I was driving from Copenhagen to Billund (to take my kid to Legoland, naturally) and got started by turning the wrong way out of the Copenhagen airport.  There is a Bridge of No Turning right away.  Thus, I wound up traveling from freakin' SWEDEN to Billund  :)  Anyway, have a good trip and enjoy the milk!

I think Sir Aeddan has made his choice (you might say, "has dug his own grave") and I can't think how Sirs Daron or Abloc will sway him from it.  I'm pretty sure he will try to sway them.  This ought to get interesting!

Hehe ... well I think most people end up accidently crossing over to Sweden after leaving Copenhagen Airport. I have done it once. Even a friend of mine that works in the airport has ended up in Sweden on more than one occassion :)

And actually the part of the missus' family that isnt Irish live near Billund so we will be staying not far from there. Lots of farms and .. well .. not much anything else really. But if you dont mind listening to them talk about cattle then they are actually quite nice people. It is just the trip itself that I fear. You know .. "Are we there yet? How about now? I have to pee! Daddy - she took my apple! Are we there yet? Daddy - he is texting a giiiiiirl!"

I am already bald but my beard is turning greyer every time we take the trip.

For ease of play, at least a couple of the Saxons speak the same tongue as you do.  There isn't really a mechanism in-game for languages, so mostly they will just be for dramatic effect.  :)

Nope, no horses.  Sir Daron is not overly confident of his ability to escape.  One could assume that they would 'raise the alarm' and other Saxons in the area would be on the lookout.  It is also getting dark in the woods and finding his way back out while being pursued could be tricky.

Hi all!  I'm back from my 4th of July weekend.  Many explosions took place...after the end of a baseball game...at which I drank beer.  Well, not beer exactly, but cider.  Oh, and they were giving away little apple pies, so I ate one, fully aware how cartoonishly American the whole scene was  :)

TOT: I've managed to get a tiny bit lost as to the lapse of time, between the two groups.  Sir Aeddan is on board to proceed with Morgana's plan of trickery as soon as she's ready, and it sounds like Sir Rhydwyn is also prepared to go down with this ship.  Ooops, I mean, to succeed gloriously and earn our place in the annals of history!

Re: OOC: The Hearth

Well it does sound very Americana Sir Aeddan but there is nothing wrong with that. The US is still one of the best places to travel as a tourist. At least that is my experience. I admit I have never been to very tourist-y places like Florida or LA (been to NY though and I suppose that is a tourist-magnet). I have mainly been in rented cars driving through small towns and I have always loved it. People are friendly and helpful. Some places you are the most exotic thing that has passed through town for the past 50 years. There are the flags and the fundraisings. The churches. The diners. Some more flags. The yellow school buses (dont know why but I love them). More flags. The soccer moms and the BBQs. Parties tend to end surprisingly early. People always offer the business cards and I never know what to do with them. People ask "How are you today, Sir" when I enter a store and I have learned now that they dont really care or want to know but they are just being polite. And never tell a joke to a police officer or in customs because I have started to wonder if they are trained to have no sense of humour.

So I think your 4th of July sound just lovely. Welcome back Sir Aeddan. Now get your ass moving and kill those Saxons and rescue us. We need it :)

The script I'm writing in my mind...

TOT:  You guys should really hunt a wolf.
Knight1:  Hey look, a unicorn that farts rainbows!
TOT:  That unicorn will kill you.  Hunt a wolf.
Knight2:  OMG, and it farts marshmallows too!  Look at those fartmallows!!
TOT:  *facepalm*

Notes:

1.  You are off by yourselves in the forest, fairly deep.  There is no one else around.  There are no knights in camp because they are all out hunting in different parts of the forest.  The four of you started in the same area, so you can find one another if you so choose.

2.  Capturing an animal just requires you to knock it unconscious and then tie it up.

3.  Just so we are clear, a Griffin, for instance, has two attacks higher than any of your attacks which it can use on one target or two.  On average, one hit from a Griffin is sufficient to knock you to 0 even accounting for armor.  On the other hand, a critical from any of you with doubled max damage would be insufficient to knock a Griffin to 0.  Manticores, however, are a bit tougher.  :D

As Sir Daron notes, these beasts are deep in a forest belonging to the Count.  They do not pose any imminent threat to the populace, who are really the Count's problem anyway.  You are certainly free to try to hunt them.  Just remember that anyone failing their Valorous check will flee, leaving the Valorous to the beasts' mercy.  :)

Re: OOC: The Hearth

Sorry, things have gone a little sideways.  As I mentioned, I am sort of testing out new Hunt procedures and I am a little confused with "Wrong Animal Roll again on Prey Table +5."  I did not really understand it when I first read it and it makes even less sense in practice.  I was thinking that perhaps it meant to roll Hunting @ +5, and if successful, then roll on the Prey table for a new animal.  However, that is not really what it says.

The upshot is that Bear/Boar/Bull are all removed and there is a 30% chance of rolling on the Special table.  Unfortunately, the Special table is full of stuff that will basically kill you.  I had not really looked at the stats of the monsters on the Special Table until two of you rolled on it and then it was rather sobering.  Now it is possible that the animals don't fight back, they just attempt to flee, but other stuff seems to contradict that.

So, for the moment, I am going to largely ignore the Special Table and we will work on finding more manageable game.  Tomorrow is a little bit of a mess but I will try to post something in the morning, getting us, I hope, back on track.

@Sir Abloc:  the front part of the church, where the priest stands, is the "altar."  So if this is a special carved piece that hangs up there, it'd be an "altarpiece," one word.  Misspelling "altar" as "alter," and writing it as a two-word phrase rather than a single word, is totally common because, you know, ENGLISH.  Plus it's a rare term -- I grew up Catholic but certainly haven't used the word in conversation before.

Re: OOC: The Hearth

I went to a Catholic school (despite being Lutheran) so I like to think I know my way around a church. I have always enjoyed sitting there looking at the medieval frescos with tons of devils and sinners and dragons and snakes and what not. I even got a T-shirt that says "You cant scare me. I was taught by nuns" which I find rather amusing.

So ... just to see if I got it right. The Altarpiece is a carved curved "piece" despicting "crosses and fun stories" while an alter piece/altar piece is a smaller part of the altarpiece? Is that the difference?

Re: OOC: The Hearth

Oh riiiiight, I hadn't thought of an "altar piece" simply being a piece of the altar, that table-thing where the priest prays!  Huh.  I went to a fairly progressive church, a very state-of-the-art 1970s building of curved lines and earth-tone decor, so I never saw bloody paintings or sculptures of suffering people until I was a grownup.

In my mind, then, an altarpiece is something glittery and abstract that hangs above the altar and invites quiet contemplation.  I am WAY off, though, I'm sure you're right that the object in question, here in this game, is ornately carved and depicts saints being slaughtered and stuff like that.

Re: OOC: The Hearth

My family and I never went much to church and when we did it was a very plain boring Lutheran church with white walls and a model of a ship hanging from the ceiling as the only fun thing for me as a child to watch while we survived the sermon. You know .. the kind of sermons where your dad is struggling not to fall asleep and your mom has a thousand yard stare and occasionally whispers to you to sit still.

The church we went to in school was an old catholic church from the 14th century that had survived the Reformation due to "someone doing someone a favor because someone's great-great-great grandparent was buried under the floor in the church"-kinda thing. And it had all these old frescos on the walls and two canonballs stuck in the walls as well from one of the times we were invaded by Sweden. So ... a much more fun place for a kid :)

And regards to the spelling then I hope you all spell correctly because I more or less just watch and learn from you guys. So from now on - if I make mistakes I will blame it on you :D

Answering Sir Abloc's query:  The other reason to have a baby is, of course, so that you can make it mow the lawn in about 10 years.  (My plan has crumbled in our house, as our 13-year-old wouldn't know "lawn" from "driveway" and would complain about the wi-fi signal quality outside.)

Re: OOC: The Hearth

Just a note to let you know I am actually here.  :)

I am currently awaiting a decision on where people are going or what they are doing.  There is no real fighting this summer as the army of Somerset comes out from the swamp and joins with King Nanteleod of Escavalon and King Idres refuses to engage.  Many undefended/poorly defended castles/towns are liberated by King Nanteleod, but those fortified by Cornish knights are not . . . historically.

So I have placed you in a city and there will be attempts to oust Cornwall so that you will have something to do.  And of course, it is an actual city, something with which none of you have much experience.  So plenty of potential adventure, both on and off duty.

As with many things in this campaign, outside of the general structure provided by the Great Pendragon Campaign (GPC) scenario (subject to some modifications), I don't really have a specific plan, I am mostly just coming up with things as you do stuff.  So I rolled some Intrigue Rolls and made up some rumors (some true some . . . less so) to chase.  If you go to the tavern or thereabouts, I will create it and some NPCs and run with it.  If you go check out the area around the church, I will do the same.  If you decide to survey defenses, or do a census, or take protection money from local shopkeepers, or whatever, I will come up with stuff as a result of your actions and rolls.  I have made a decision as to which rumors are true or false. However, how (or if) you react and what you roll will sort of decide how things play out.

While I do tend to try to setup things to involve you in events that occur in the GPC (e.g. that was part of the point of the Spring hunt), I find that working up adventures in advance often does not work well when people decide not to participate in them, and I waste a bunch of time.  So there are no wrong answers here.  And of course, as you may have surmised by the Spring Solo Adventures, things are not always the way they are first presented and people do not all tell the truth, or all of it.  :D

So feel free to go as a group of two or four to the Tavern, or check out the Church, do something completely different.  Not being 'involved' in one thread right now does not mean missing it entirely.  If someone goes off and starts roughing up shopkeepers, they can clue the others into this lucrative protection racket so everyone can get involved!

Well, I got the Covid booster vaccine yesterday, and had a pretty bad reaction to it (not enough to go to the hospital, just really achy and almost fever-ish). With that and the holiday this week, it might be a few days before I can post. Just a heads up.

:(

I got the J&J shot back in March and had no ill effects to speak of.  Got Moderna booster when it became available and was mostly just tired for a 12-24 hours.  Meanwhile, got second shingles shot and TDAP a couple of weeks back and I was feeling lousy for a couple of days.

TOT:  Could you give us a clearer idea of the geography of the tunnel entrance?  I caught "small courtyard," which I'd guess is only accessible from one direction, so it'd help me to know what's near the entrance to the courtyard -- any businesses?  Any homes?  Do businesses and/or homes look out on the courtyard?

It is however you imagine it to be.  :)  There are homes and businesses on both streets that run parallel to the walls, which back up to the courtyard.  The courtyard is accessible via alleys going to both streets.  There can be a vacant business or home if you like, there can be windows or doors onto the courtyard.  You could occupy a couple of buildings if you like.  I don't want to constrain your planning with insignificant structural constraints.

Straw just sounded less apocalyptic than flooding the tunnel with oil and cook the invaders. And I doubt TOT would let us build/hide a ballista so we could impale the first man appearing out of the tunnel.

Oh I wasnt thinking about boiling tar. Just cover (some of) the floor of the tunnel with oil. And then shoot a flaming arrow at it as people starts emerging from the tunnel. It could cause some panic and lit up the scene.

A minor problem though is the use of fire in a medieval city mostly made out of wooden houses. It tends to turn into a disaster. But ... it will be fun :)

And I have been isolated in the guest bedroom with a computer and a bunch of books so life is so far rather good.

I'm all excited to see how Abloc & Aeddan do with their fair ladies!  It was fun to read Sir Abloc's dialogue, so I decided to take a totally opposite tack when I posted for Sir Aeddan.  In my head, I was editing the film by intercutting footage of Sir Abloc pouring his heart out with Sir Aeddan standing there, totally stiff, and saying, "um, tell me about your dog."  :)

Re: OOC: The Hearth

Sorry this has taken a while, there was a pile of things to figure out and do and it became a little overwhelming.  The biggest of which is that there are a couple of different systems for manorial improvements.  One of the reasons I choose the current system I am using is that everything fit on one sheet and was easy to just post.  However, most of the improvements net a loss of income or are pretty risky.  So I want to use a different system but I don't want to interfere with what you have already done.  And I need to come up with a new one-page or so guide on it.  I have come up with a plan of such cleverness as to defy rational thought.  I am going to implement a new system in a couple of years Game Time and will have a sheet written out explaining things.

I am now working on the Spring event.  The nut of which is that Prince Mark is heading to Salisbury on a diplomatic mission and is taking the four of you with him.  You will be in Salisbury for a few days, including the Easter Feast.  Rather than just have another feast, you will be tasked with something to do, the details of which I am now working on.  :)

Oh, and congratulations to Sir Rhydwyn's mom on the new son.  Another immaculate conception!!

As to "SIZE," yeah, I've spent all of Aeddan's glory bonuses on size.  He started out tall and skinny, and his size is increasing as he's building muscle from knight-ing.  At least, that's how it plays out in my head  :)

But it is a tiny area so hopefully it wont affect me too much. The two oldest kids are doing better and better. The youngest seems to be recovering as well and if we get a good quiet night tonight then it probarbly means she is out of the woods. Sorry, sort of busy.  Took me a while to conquer jetlag and catch up on things from when I was away.  Struggling a little here because we seem a little caught up in the same sorts of events over and over as I try to move to 510 when Arthur appears and I have a lot more pre-made adventures to work with.  No real battles until next Summer (508).  So I am mostly trying to give you opportunities to improve skills and meet some people.  I have something tentatively planned for Fall and I know the basic contours of Summer, just working on what to do for the feast in Spring.  Should have something out shortly though.  ;)

*Cringe* I have ZERO excuse.  Pendragon dropped off my radar for a while.  I went on a spring vacation, went climbing in the Italian Alps, then got super busy with a huge project when I got back to work.  And suddenly I stopped and thought, oh gosh, I'm forgetting something!  I'm awfully sorry to hear of your illnesses, brothers, and I'm very glad you're recovering well.

So here I am, and Sir Aeddan is back to fumbling around in his usual gangly manner.  He has no idea that somebody named Arthur is fumbling around, too, and his ideal of power is definitely the Lady Morgana, though he realizes how uncomfortable that makes his friends.  He'll do what he can to represent his heroic brethren in interactions with her.

Re: OOC: The Hearth

I face a quandary.

The setting of the game aligns with the Great Pendragon Campaign, except that the players are from Cornwall rather than Salisbury and are generally to be aligned against Arthur rather than for him.  If events pass as they are set to in the GPC, Arthur emerges victorious with the help of Merlin.  To put it in perspective, Arthur has a Battle of 7 and will defeat King Lot (Battle 25) and King Ryons (Battle 22) in battle because Merlin is giving him a +10 in addition to other aid.

To balance Merlin out, I have provided Morgana as a foil to counteract Merlin's influence and to provide things for the players to do that normally Arthur's knights would accomplish.  However, the party's inability to work with Morgana makes all of this impossible.  She has the ability to help the players work with her brothers-in-law in the North, to aid them when needed, and to use her magic to counteract Merlin's.

This campaign is called "Against the Beardless King."  Cornwall would not normally be involved in the Arthurian question for at least a decade.  The game I've conceived of allows the four of you to become involved much sooner, in large part due to Morgana's influence and ties to the Northern Kings through her sisters.  Without her, your four knights aren't on a path to participate at all in the conflict that is central to the game.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this, I am open to suggestions.  Otherwise, I am just going to shutter this as there really isn't any path forward.

I'll need to think on it, but I'd be willing to work with Morgana IC. Either way, I just don't want to see the game go, I've been enjoying it.

Oh, wow I didn't realise I was being so disruptive or that Morgana was so vital. :(

Under the circumstances I think it's best if I leave the game then since it is really only my character that has issues with Morgana.

Re: OOC: The Hearth

@ToT

I dont know much Arthurian lore and I dont know the details of your plans for the campaign. But I will hate to see the campaign end and I will hate for Sir Daron to leave.

Personally I enjoy the campaign. Yes, ToT is a magnificient storyteller and he knows I enjoy his campaigns. I enjoy how the campaign isnt just about the grand scheme but becomes personal with lost siblings and crooked artisans. With marriages, kids and combat that can go so very very wrong. And while I absolutely suck at puzzle-solving and intrigue (mostly because of my lacking when it comes to your language) then I enjoy reading every single post you make and listen to every single crazy plan you guys come up with.

But what I have enjoyed just as much are you guys. Your characters are interesting. I am still wondering in what direction Sir Rhydwyd will go. I am looking forward to see how Sir Daron manage to get married. I predict a great future for Sir Aeddan - and a terrible end when he learns never to trust a witch.

And while your characters are funny then it is you players I have enjoyed the most. There are none of the drama I have experienced in other campaigns. I suspect most of us are of a certain age. I like to see how people can handle a joke when their characters mess things up and cant stay on their horses.

So I will hate for Sir Daron to leave. I will hate for the campaign to end.

And if it does end then I hope you are willing to play again. I will certainly enjoy your company :)

Re: OOC: The Hearth

I've been worried about this for months now, feeling like we were headed toward a dead end.  When ToT asked me to join the game, I definitely had the impression that job #1 was to get on friendly terms with Morgana.

Daron, you're a wonderful player.  Is it possible that your character would have an "epiphany," and change his attitude toward Morgana on his own?  That's what I've been hoping would happen.  But instead, as she's done things for us, it seems like Sir Daron (the character) has taken that as further evidence that she's crafty and therefore NOT trustable.

Sir Aeddan would definitely agree that dealing with Morgana is like dancing with a dragon.  A really pretty and graceful dragon  :)  But she's been generous to us, and her actions (while decidedly witchy) suggest that she's motivated by justice and loyalty.

I did *not* expect Sir Aeddan to become so interested in intrigue and larger politics, but that's how he's turned out.  My last Pendragon character was so different!  (He really liked nuns.)

Also, it's fun for me to write in really lofty English, but would everyone prefer that we write the story in more conversational modern English?  Would that make participating a little easier?

Re: OOC: The Hearth

I am sorry if I didn't communicate that Morgana was becoming central to La Resistance, it is something I thought I made clear but honestly have no idea if I actually communicated.  I know we discussed her a year or so ago when I was thinking of bringing on a PC to play her because I was concerned about having an NPC sort of leading the effort.

I try very hard to create a story that has some sort of logic behind it.  So the Prince of Cornwall does not just invite 4 fresh knights to accompany him to Salisbury.  Instead, the fathers of two of their amors invite them to a hunt, the Count is close with the Prince and they get information on impressing the Count.  The Count invites them to join a private sortie and Sir Daron meets Prince Mark.  Impressed, Prince Mark invites them to another hunt.  And so it goes.  Morgana is someone who can easily make things happen and move the story along logically because of her ties to Britain's nobility and she is willing to do so because the knights' fathers were loyal to her mother even after Merlin's meddling drove a wedge between them.

There is no doubt that Morgana is powerful and vindictive.  Getting on Morgana's bad side is likely a death sentence for most people.  However, she is far more complex than that.  She is extremely loyal and, at least in her mind, an honorable person seeking to thwart the meddling of a power-hungry mage (Merlin) whose plans for Britain are self-centered and destructive.  For the most part, your aims and goals are likely to align.  As things go on and the players become more powerful and wise (ok, maybe not wise) they may run into conflicts with her on how to proceed but should be in a position to negotiate compromise.

My hope was that by getting to know her a little and seeing what she is willing to do for you without ever asking favors in return, that people would be a bit more receptive.  Perhaps feeling like you are making a deal with the devil or being enticed by her beauty.  Ultimately, her designs on the players are benign and perhaps the more the players get to know her the less concerned they would be?

All that said, Sir Daron's departure would sadden me and I don't know that I would be willing to continue.  As was seen in the previous campaign, it starts to get far more difficult to run when there are not enough players and part of the impetus for starting this game was because of how well Sir Gracian (Abloc) and Sir Dalen (Daron) worked together in the previous campaign and seem to work together with Sir Rhydwyn and Sir Aedden.  Trying to recruit new players turned into a disaster and one I have little interest in repeating.  :P

If there is a way to salvage things, I am certainly all for it!

Re: OOC: The Hearth

I honestly had no idea that Morgana was central to the storyline. I was beginning to suspect she was important now but I merely saw her as La Belle Dame sans Merci. The Arthurian idea of a strong woman being the downfall of all good men. As a player I merely enjoyed seeing this campaign's Sorceress shine, like in our previous campaign where another Sorceress quickly became someone to fear.

My character is deeply afraid of her. Not because he sees her as wrong or evil. But because he sense her anger and knows how powerful she is and that makes her a very very dangerous person. But he also knows that right know she is their only hope so an alliance is neccessary. As a player I love her character and cant wait to see how she is going to be our doom :)

And I agree. Recruiting new players has met with little success in the past. It is rare to find players like you and I will hate to see our little merry band of brothers go our seperate ways.

Not at all! It will ruin the fun if you ask me. If my character is challenged by another knight then I want him to speak lofty English and not just say "I am going to cut you up, booooi!". Personally my English is good enough to storm a castle but not really good enough to play the great diplomat and emmissary to foreign courts. I love the quests though and see it as part of the story but I am out of my element so I am just trying to remember the old Ivanhoe and Robin Hood movies and see how you guys write. I love it :)

Re: OOC: The Hearth

Really sorry that I apparently didn't bother to let you all in on this.  :O  I put all of this stuff together in my mind and thought that I communicated it as well but apparently, not so much.  For instance, I thought I spelled this out more when I mentioned possibly bringing on a PC to play Morgana but looking back, nope, not really.  Sigh.

So this is not on you Sir Daron, this was a failure to communicate on my part.

Way to go, Mr. Intrigue, a.k.a. Sir Rhydwyn!!

Except the news we're learning is kinda scary.  Countess Ellen isn't interested in our Prince Mark because of King Idres's "boorish behavior," or whatever she said.  My mind is a blank -- does anybody remember what incident(s) she might be referring to?

It lives?!

Honestly I thought (feared) that this was dead. It may still be the case as I never figured out if we reached an agreement on how to deal with The (Perhaps-Not-So) Evil Witch.

I have been enjoying the Summer though and hope we can continue our game. If the campaign has slowly died then I hope we can stay in touch and play some other time. You have no idea how much I have enjoyed playing with you guys - no drama, no bitching, no "see me, see me". Just pure fun as it is supposed to be.

I'll contact ToT off-game and see if we might move forward.  Wishing everybody a great weekend!
