Sorry all, I'll be catching up on my PMs tomorrow. Just finishing a project for an art class I'm taking, and its taken more time than expected. That is what I get for taking college courses for fun. But I'll be working until midnight to punch this out, so gaming will take a back seat tonight.

Bear with me all while I go through the 20 questions and set up character sheets.

I believe I'll cap things about 10-12 characters initially and see where I'm at in terms of time dedications.

If you are interested in Coteries, let the other players know. Some of you may be only a couple as you enter Toronto, and that is fine. As your stories cross you may pick up more, merge, divide, and what have you.

I have some Loresheets in mind that I will introduce as they are "discovered". I've still not made up my mind on what I'm going to do with players that already have a Loresheet should they wish to enter these Loresheets, so I'm open to taking your opinions on that case.

Hey folks...

A couple of questions for you all:

Chronicle Convictions - what are some guidelines overall that we can all adhere to/aim for?

How are you each sort of falling when it comes to Anarch/Camarilla?

What kinds of Coteries are folks thinking of? Since a number of them are written as if they are integrated into local politics, I'd imagine that some are out of reach or impractical.

As far as Derek goes, Camarilla here as far as that goes.

For Coteries, sounds like there is one sort of based on 'justice/judgement', but that's it so far. Though I'm sure there could be additional ones formed in-game (or if anyone else has some proposals).

Chronicle convictions are up.

Chronicle Convictions
• Courage is the highest value.
• My sect, right or wrong.
• Always keep your sworn word.

We are going with a new frontier sort of motif, and Toronto is similar to the wild west, but in kindred terms.

Give me a shout when you are done your sheet. I'm still processing a few more characters.

Just to be clear, I'm not balancing this game on Camarilla/Anarch lines. How things fall in that regard is up to you all.

I'm hoping by Wednesday/Thursday we can have the first RP threads kicking off.

I'll be going over the threads today and getting a feel for what's out there already, but I wanted to say hi. Zofia (and her business partner Julian, who you'll meet later) are going to be a little bastion of safety and stability in an otherwise unfriendly world. Assuming they can get Asylum's newest franchise up and running despite being roughly 2,519 miles away from their Patrons, of course.

Considering their Patrons are Jeanette and Therese Voerman? Maybe a little separation is for the best.

In reply to Zofia Kaminski (msg # 30):

From the character description:

"Hugo Dupuis was once a man of finance; controlled, brilliant, exacting, he read the markets as well as anyone alive.

Now he is a dead man.  And mad.

Driven insane by the Embrace, Hugo has become a genius, an artist, a whisper at the edge of the collectors' world.  His paintings emerge from time to time; sought after, fought over, they reveal the world as it actually is.  Stories circulate among the well to do, the in-the-know, of a disheveled figure on the fringes of high-society parties, in the shadows of bohemian cafes.  The ignorant seek him out; it never ends well.

Seemingly abandoned by his Sire, Hugo struggled with his new-found madness, and threw himself into his art.  His paintings reveal more than just his vision; they reveal the truth, even truths best unknown.  He finally painted the wrong thing, saw what was not meant to be seen, and has been driven from the home and solace he found into a new world in the North.  His life was bought at the cost of his Sire's protection, a shield he never saw held over him until it was gone.

Now the madman stalks new streets, breaks new ground, his Eye opened to new sights.

You have been warned."

Alright gang, I seem to be caught in a waffle.  Does my Malk, Hugo, spend his xp on a third rank of Aupex (which makes his second level Domination power mesmerize), or does he spend it on two dots of obfuscation, making his second level domination power Dementation?  I love obfuscate, and given I'm playing him as bonkers, Dementation works.  I also like the idea of him being really strong in Auspex.

Heh, hate to join the bandwagon, but I tend to agree with the others. Dementation is a neat Discipline and all, but 'when' to use it tends to be a bit situational than not. Auspex, however, especially at rank three, would have a ton of potential uses depending on which powers you took. And nothing says he can't be crazy without Dementation. Hehe.

Re: OoC

In PMs let me know if you want your first thread to be solo affairs or as a couple or group.

I'll be putting down a system for downtime, the first thread will try and capture mood, and give us a thought on your characters, as well as planning if it includes more than one character.  Then we will enter a downtime (weeks to a month of sped up time, while your characters go about getting things done) which will lead to story.

Downtime will allow you to grab contacts, shore up domain, bring resources to bear on a haven, while story will be encounters you will have with PC, NPCs and events happening in night as opposed to weeks or a month.

Time in our game will be pretty fluid. At times you may be in more than one thread, which may create paradoxes but I need you guys overlook, and justify them. For example if you are having a long conversation with a PC or NPC, and in another event a PC calls on you, it is unlikely it happened at that exact time you were talking. This will mean you can jump into the event.  Depending how things go, you can decide one took place before or after the other just to make sense of things.

I will be plopping you around Toronto if you don't have an idea of where you would settle, and don't want to do the research.

Re: OoC

As I get out the Contacts, Domain/Haven, and Status threads, I just want people to realize that they don't have to get involved in those things if it doesn't make sense for the character.  These are just story avenues for some characters that players may wish to take.

Not every vampire cares about controlling human society, or furthering their hunting grounds, and position in vampire society. There may be a time however they may feel they need those and seek out people that have those contacts as they make contact with other vampires around the city.

Also the reason these things are not bought with xp is because I want these things to feel dynamic. Losing and gaining them will be like health and willpower in a story, happening due to some climatic fight that has story implications. I don't want players feeling that they lost something they paid for with xp.  Rather they should look at it like they got punched, in a conflict other than a fight. If you get Contacts due to your Predator type, they are untouchable, and remain outside of the Contact pyramid.

So if someone floods your sewer haven that you have been building for six months, don't look at it like a lose, but rather a fun story of survival and revenge. This goes the same for status loss due to someone trash talking you, and spreading a rumour that the harpies of the city believe. Or someone focusing the police on your underworld influences. All stories devices for us to expand and explore your characters, and city.

Also starting to think of themes and stories.  If we're going "Wild West", we've got some tropes to play with:

1) the wild vs. civilization (anarchs trying to live free of the Camarilla and start a new society, the Camarilla slowly encroaching and imposing order)

2) the fall-out from war (veterans of the Camarilla / Sabat conflicts, damaged by the experience, drift in, having not found a place in "normal society")

3) range wars and other resource conflicts (in an open city, Kindred stake out huge "ranches" as hunting grounds, inevitably coming into competition and conflict; conflict emerges between "ranchers" who feed widely across a large population to distribute it, vs. those who "homestead", staking out dense populations they groom; some Kindred "strike a claim", discovering a pocket of particularly rich feeding, while "claim jumpers" move in to try and take it from them

I mean, there's actually a lot to play with here.  It's especially funny given that we're in a city once described as "New York run by the Swiss" ;)

As they never state a date of when the Second Inquisition, the Beckoning and the Gehenna War calls the Sabbat to the Middle East, let's say it is around 2014, two years before all hell broke loose in 2012 (Mayans got it right, just not for humans), and these events are still recent. Anarchs have been coming to Toronto on and off, some disappearing, some fights against Sabbat, but recent rumours were that it was empty by wandering Gangrel and Anarchs, pushing a migration of ambitious, hungry and exiled vampires looking to resettle.

Hahaha. Yeah, it would be a mistake to think you alone are in the city. I just didn't want people creating characters expecting elders/princes to give them orders. And I wanted them the PCs to not be passive players in any story, as that bores me, and you guys have to keep me entertained :)

Between your Sire, merits, flaws, other PCs you might have history with, and Touchstones there is plenty to work with.

Re: OoC

I'll try and get some posts up tomorrow. Just adjusting to the kids doing home school again with the lock down, a wife swamped with work, and an exam for some university courses I take online for fun. Next day or two will be slow in terms of posts.  I have 4 character sheets to approve, a player in the wings I need to do 20 questions and all 5 to get rolling into threads. Then hopefully things will start to flow better.

Please bear with as things are a bit chaotic, but I'm hoping to get into the groove of things this week.

I hear CNN is crapping on us for the shit show we have going on here, and dumping on our premier (governor). Might have to start finding time to watch CNN :) I'm out in farmland, so we are good, I think 1 case in our community, and my wife is a healthcare worker so she is vaccinated. So nothing to worry about here beyond some time constraints.

Re: OoC

My character could be considered almost hyper rational because of his grounded work in psychiatry and neurology. He has a therapeutic technique called Narrative Reorientation Therapy that he uses with clients to help them get over traumas. It doesn't pay attention to the right or wrong of a given solution so long as the conflicted feelings that have arisen are resolved so even though Iris would contend otherwise, there's very little in the way of morality guiding his practice. And now that he's a Kindred, his thoughts have really changed on what it is to exist. I've been reading books on pessimism and the thoughts have dovetailed for this character into an almost eager nilihism with the vampiric condition and humanity. Think of an exuberant Rust from True Detective rather than his somber depiction in that show.

Uh.. Lessee.

If you're planning on keeping bees, you should take a class or get a mentor (we got a mentor) and we ordered our first box of bees.  This year, when all is said and done we should have 2 hives, and hopefully we'll be able to rob them next late spring.

We have friends who did it a few years ago as well. Though for them, they were free bees.

The way it works around here is you can join an emailing list after you take the classes, and when someone calls an exterminator saying "help, I've got bees swarming in my yard" the exterminator puts them in touch with the list.

Then the first person who responds gets to come pick them up. They got 3 hives that way.

If your thread ends, you will see a downtime thread up with your name on it. Jump in there and we can talk.  I know the first few downtimes you'll have questions, so don't hesitate to ask as we work through them.

I believe you also all have coterie threads. If you feel you belong to a coterie that doesn't have a thread, or I forgot to add you to it let me know.

Current Coteries:

Bird and Moon (Anarch - Native American Coterie)
Zofia and Julian (Camarilla & Anarch - Asylum/Elsyium Coterie)
Bassel, Derek, and Malcolm (Camarilla - Crucible, heavy ties to the underworld)
Eve, Hugo, Jack, and Sebastian (Camarilla - Respectable front to darker activities)

Current Solo Members:

Iris (Anarch - University professor and psychologist)
Kevin (Anarch - Loner and survivor running away from a dark past)
Lily (Anarch - A champion of the oppressed, and community organizer)

If its the Moderna shot, word of advice for you Sebastian: Take the next day off. Second shot was much like the first for me (and a lot of others I've heard) - sore arm for a couple days after. But the biggest 'new' thing is the day after your shot, you're going to be exhausted. "Tired" is putting it mildly. Sleep all day and you'll still feel tired. So take that day off if possible. On the bright side, by the next day, you'll feel like a million bucks and be wide awake!

I don't want you guys feeling you have to pursue these plots either, you are free to go do your own thing for now, and maybe return to them at a later point in time or never bother with them. I'm here to tell a story with you, so don't feel bad telling me, "my character is not interested in that," and start telling me what your character is doing.

Re: OoC

I'm writing to let everyone know that the ST seems to have contracted Covid before the vaccine could fully take effect.  He's fine.  He'll be out of the hospital tomorrow, they took him in today, but everything seems to be going well.  We thought it was the side effects of the vaccine, but when it continued, and my checks would sometimes result in lower blood oxygen levels, we went to get to get him tested and it turns out he had contracted it.

I'll keep you updated :/

Defiantly a plus.  Just came out feeling a bit weak, and winded.  Still not 100% but for the most part I'm feeling good.  Did some light weights, dog walk, and 15mins on my row machine this morning.  I can feel that I'm not all there, but I figure I'll take it easy this week and maybe the next, and slowly work myself to where I was.

Helps that the wife is a RN and is checking my blood oxygen levels, pulse and heart.  I would have continued thinking it was the vaccine otherwise.

This just means more sitting at home, so rpol is entertainment.

Re: OoC

To avoid having to repeat myself in multiple threads, your character is the only vampire in the city that you know of, unless you came in with a coterie, then it is you and them as far as your character will know.

Events may bring characters together. Character may call out to other vampires through various means. As your characters establish domains you may spot those that enter into your domain, or if you marked your domain, they can try and contact you if they recognize the markings.

I will assume that characters are trying to be as discreet as possible unless stated otherwise in all other cases.

Page 323 gives some ways you can contact, leave, and find marks.

Edit:  Anarch and Camarilla signals are nearly indistinguishable from one another. If you happen to be in the same area and pick up a signal, you will not know what you get.  Sabbat signals are foreign to you unless you have certain loresheets.

I think I'm over it Sebastian.  Sweating a lot in work out, but that is about it.

Middle of next week I will be starting an event as something big happens in the domain. If you are not done with your private, downtime, coterie threads, or other event threads you may have initiated, don't worry, you can jump into it anyways.

I'll be active every day except for Mother's day, which is this Sunday.

I've posted Chapter 1, it is currently close.  Let me know where your character will be, ie in the coterie haven, in personal haven, out in the streets, ect.  This will allow me to start separate threads, and we will see where that will lead us.

Re: OoC

So here is how I am going to attempt to run Chapter 1:

1) Each player will post in the thread with your character's name in the title.

2) You can state where you are starting when the fires erupt, or when you hear the sirens.

3) At some point I may ask you you to move Wake Up (Chapter 1) without a name, and this may be due to your characters having bumped into one another.  It will also be where I post something that most of the characters can see, to avoid me having to make the same post in multiple threads.

The reasons why I am doing it this way is because I don't want people to have to scroll through everyone's posts to find out if I replied to them, as well as for my own sanity. Though a cluster fuck may erupt anyways later on, I want to try and avoid it as long as possible.

Bolded red just so people don't miss this.

Edit:  I believe Iris has left us, but just in case they return they have a thread. In the mean time the character is an NPC.

True story. One time, in an Orpheus Chronicle, Moon's Player did not spend her XP. Like... ever. The other 2 to 3 Players spent it almost as soon as we got it, or saved it for specific purchases.

Finally, towards the end of the story or maybe near the mid-point... some time well into the game (which lasted something like 3 years)... the ST finally was looking over sheets and asked why her character didn't have X ... or Y... or something. And then realized that she'd banked up somewhere over 150 XP.

Why?

"I didn't know what to spend it on."

So... the GM took her sheet home and spent all (or at least most of) the XP. The character didn't really change a whole lot. Moon's Player kept doing the same things she'd been doing because she was used to it, but she at least had the option of doing more.

Moose riding Gangrel in Canada is expected.

An insectoid looking Nosferatu floating in a swarm of wasps, less expected. Though I don't want to bother finding out if a coordinated swarm of insects can generate enough lift in a certain part in them to lift a feather.

I'll say that a single honeybee can easily carry off other dead bees, wasps, and when flying over the ground (within an inch or so) there's definite disturbance on the ground similar to what you see in movies from helicopter down-draft.

A swarm of honeybees can regulate temperature throughout a hive (either a commercial box or a natural construction) to maintain an internal temperature of around 95F and control humidity (much less effectively) by vibrating their bodies and beating their wings.

So expect to see a vampire that weighs as much as a feather floating on the updraft current created in the centre of a swarm of flying insects. This will likely be accompanied by their hands stretched out, laughter, and proclamations of your end, though not guaranteed.

And yes, Moon is the crazy bee woman.

Nope. Just be careful with them.

Bumblebees can sometimes be held, but they can also be a bit skittish and territorial. If you ever find a bumblebee "hive" (they tend to grab spots relatively low to the ground with some cover) you'll probably have to make some space between you and them pretty rapidly.

Honey bees vary kind of widely. We've currently got one hive that's fairly chill and one hive that's very defensive. We can typically hold the honey bees - or rather get them to crawl on our hands. Especially if we've got sugar water or the like on our fingers (or honey or just water).

Bumblebees can sting multiple times. Honey bees only sting once (each).

Nope, just honey bees have that problem.  Females at that.  The queen can sting multiple times, and our adorable lil drone boys can't sting at all!

One thing you can do to attract bees to your home (other than pollinator friendly plants) is to make a bee-watering station.  Take a shallow bowl and fill it with marbles, river stones, or even the plastic shower loofah things and add water.  Bees are very good at drowning themselves, so places to perch to drink is super helpful.

Another thing is to mix up some 1:1 (water:sugar) mix - NOT FOR HUMMINGBIRDS, THAT WILL GIVE THEM DIABETES - and you can put it on your fingertip and the bees might come and sip/lick it off.  Keep it in the fridge until you need it. A little goes a long way (unless you have my hives, then they consume like 15lbs of sugar a week. YIKES!)

In other news, yes, Bird and I are crazy bee people both in and out of the game.

In reply to Hugo Dupuis (msg # 253):

That's honey bees.

Bumblebees (most? there's a few varieties) can sting multiple times.

Bumblebee removal is a smidge below wasp removal. No one really likes doing it because the chances of getting stung are so high.
Honey bee swarm or hive removal does carry a risk, but you can at least get something out of it - a new hive of bees, a chunk of wax and honey, etc. But wasps and bumblebees don't give you any of that stuff; so removing wasp nests or bumblebee "hives" (they're not really hives, more like a hidden collection of eggs and food stores) is generally a "if you can find someone who will actually do it" kind of deal.

Now, all of that said... there's something like 20,000 different species of bees (4000 different ones in the US alone). So, these big sweeping generalizations about honey bees and bumblebees and all that are just that.

If you see a swarm or a nest in the wild, find someone local and knowledgeable to give it a look to identify it and determine how much of a 'threat' it might be.

Anyone know if the book has rules on spotting a vampire.  I see some disciplines, but if you aren't using disciplines?

I've been using my own judgement call these days, like if a vampire is running 4 blocks and isn't tired, he's easier to spot (diff 2 or 3), but standing around doing nothing he is very hard to spot (diff 4 or 5).

To both the Anarchs, Camarilla, Clans if you find someone that is deserving of status through play over time, you can suggest. Use a word to describe what that status is, feared, respected, wise, knowledgeable, effective, deadly ect.

I will seek consensus from those in those organizations, and judge before giving out the status.

So if you see leaders forming in your organizations these are good times to tell me.

This also goes for negative status.

We are one scene away from having all the PCs attend the first domain gather at Nav.

This Friday to Monday I'm taking the family up to the cottage, so don't expect much from me. I'll put up the large gather thread up however before then if the scene seems to be going well. This should give everyone a chance to RP and get to know each other during the four days I'll be semi inactive.

Re: OoC

Well, I had hoped that the offer Derek put forward would have been taken for more than one reason, but it wasn't to be I guess. The scene speaks for itself, with the ending bit more oriented towards whether insults were being aimed at his Clan or him personally - which the way it went looks like the insults were indeed intended for 'the Clan as a whole' given the exit chosen.

In that event, Derek was originally going to use a Sabbat trap that was set up at the very beginning of the scene. With the expressed concern that Andrew may have been a Sabbat (turned or captured) and the cause of Darian's coterie being attacked, Derek and his coterie set up a death trap in the first warehouse (hence the tunnel and actual meeting in the second one). The whole place was rigged to become an instant, thermite fueled inferno that would kill anyone in the warehouse when it was triggered. Of course, it was intended originally in the event the meeting was attacked by the Sabbat rather than used against another player, but here we are. And with his whole Clan now under a clearly expressed insult, his response would be swift and final - he'd blow the first warehouse when the offender was there. Justification? Someone willing to insult an entire clan while the city is under attack by the Sabbat is too great a disruption to be allowed to remain.

Of course, that plan was also pending the idea that everyone ELSE would be taking the cars back to safety (as they had been told to do earlier in the scene). With everyone having been nudged to join Eve, it would now result in an entire coterie (and thus all the other players in the scene) being incinerated in the trap. Since the game JUST got restarted, I don't want to be the cause of either killing 4 players (or seriously injuring them to the point of delaying story development for months while they heal). I also can't see Derek letting such insults slide in part or in whole either. With both the other players of his coterie having left long before this scene, it just doesn't make sense to ruin the game for 4 players on behalf of 1 with no other PC support. So probably the best end would be for he and his coterie to decide 'If the others want to insult us to such extremes, they can deal with things on their own' and just leave Toronto completely. Or, if the GM deems it, he can have them go ahead and blow the warehouse I suppose and end the game with a bang. :)

Personally, I just don't want to ruin the game for four players under these conditions. But I also can't see him sticking around and NOT blowing the offender of so many insults to hell and back - he's a Brujah after all; one that was insulted on multiple levels. It was fun while it lasted though! Hopefully the rest of the game continues well for everyone else!

So the Crucible will be leaving Toronto and letting everyone deal with matters in their own way, blacklisting the entire area through their respective Clans. Or, alternatively, blowing the warehouse anyway. Which route is picked I'll leave to the GM to decide. Good luck all!

I honestly don't know what happened.  Out of character, I only read the parts that were not speech Derek.  I imagined Eve ignores the rest, doing her pouty Toreador walk out, after he had threatened to hit her, and kicked her out of his domain.

She figured if he had anything to say to her, he could say it in the neutral grounds of Elysium.

I don't want to argue OoC about our IC actions, as I said in private, but I don't mind explaining them.

With that said I wish you the best.

I'm intentionally not reading any of the IC threads so I don't accidentally metagame. My character is new to town and probably just announced his presence to the local Baron/Prince. Maybe not even that.

That means he knows almost nothing about the local kindred except what he experiences firsthand.

Edibles are tricky and I would not recommend them to someone who's been away for a while. I have recommendations I'd be happy to share with those who live in a state with legalized recreational use and interest.

Would people be interested in a Discord day, that can try and push out more RP scenes? We would still do it over type as I try to manage several different channels with different players doing their thing. It can allow us rush some scenes.

In all cases I will push on to the first Asylum/Elysium gather next week as the domain comes together.

Edit:  I've set it up. When you join, change your names to your character name, and I'll set you up with a private channel and one for your coterie.

Is your plan that we hang out for the day on Discord, all day?  That would be tough for me, because family and work, but could carve out a few hours for an "intensive session" on a given day, most likely.

If it's a day for designated check-ins, that works more or less.  I work from home these days, so it's usually easy to have something open in the background.

Hello all.  My apologies for the disappearance, but I was under the impression that my wife had made you aware of my situation.

I'm fine, but following covid I couldn't sit on a phone, computer, or tv for longer than 30mins before I would be hit by a horrible headache.  I pretty much kept it to work, and pulled away from tech for about 4 months, as that's what the doc prescribed.  Following that I kinda got used to avoiding tech and was/am happy with my minimal use of tech.

I miss this game, and this great troupe of players, however kick starting it a year later has too many problems that I don't want to deal with.  I won't be on rpol much in any, but I just want to say thanks for the fun experience, and to apologize for how this ended, I feel bad at how this ended.
