Re: OOC

Like a some other people here, I first got into Runequest in the 1980s.  I mostly wasn't playing for a long time, until a couple of years ago, when I got into the game The Aggabortas mentions on RPoL, having read about it on the BasicRoleplaying Forums. In the meanwhile, I'd sporadically played a bit of face to face Call of Cthulhu, Pathfinder and home-grown systems.

I liked the sandboxy nature of RQII and worry slightly that RQG aims to be too epic, but maybe I'm just a cold war dinosaur poorly adapted to the present day. It did take too long to get anywhere near rune level in the old rules. I like character generated action and the odd comedic moment, but I'm not averse to a bit of chaos fighting or tribal raiding when the occasion demands.

Re: OOC

Hello All!

I also played Akala in TFR

Amilcar will be very different if I play him right :)

I’ve played for a long time in rl, and online for maybe 6-7 years, though I took a break recently.

I’ll just say from my limited experience- effort. That’s what makes games great.  When everyone makes an effort the fun grows exponentially, and the experience becomes pretty unique and unlike other “games.” A different level of submersion is attainable. Characters are more personal than, say, a video game, and in a way you can’t get from Chess of backgammon, for example.

Looking forward to this game!

Re: OOC

I got a little carried away and started for rolling family background, but I'm stopping there as I understand the GM is mulling over a house-rule for Characteristics (STR CON DEX SIZ INT POW CHA) generation. My character is starting aged 31 if you were wondering about how she got in on the Duckhunt.

I didn't mean to fire the starting gun

In reply to Zyxx (msg # 15):

Hi gang,
I think I've PM'd you each a Google sheet link. If I did it correctly you can edit it with the link without having to log in. The sheet is derivative of a very elegant creation by Phil Hibbs that--in its original state--would do all the calculations (HP, HP per location, damage bonus, you name it).
Because I'm a Luddite though I stripped out all those goodies, but it's serviceable as a place to store information that you (and I) can get at easily. If you need help figuring anything out feel free to ask me and/or we can discuss in the OOC thread.

Re: OOC

In reply to Gargle (msg # 17):

OK I think these are mostly fixed! Please note that default skill values are filled in, you will need to add in: any family history/char gen increases (e.g., increased Battle skill); cultural skill modifiers (e.g., Lunar Tarsh (kopis 10 base plus 10 cultural --> 20); occupation skill modifiers; Cult Skill modifiers, and then you get another +25% to any four skills on the adventurer sheet, and +10% to five more skills.

Wow, how many TFR vets is that? This is the artist formerly known as Salen Dustchaser. ;)

I have the RQG rulebook but haven't played it at all, so this will be interesting.

It's very close to RQII except...
there's a CHA stat for Charisma (which can go up or down between adventures based on a character's achievements
you have % affinity to element, power and (some) form runes
In order to cast a rune spell you first have to roll under the rune affinity of one or more runes that the spell relies on
In order to cast a spirit magic spell you first have to roll under POW*5 %
You get a chance to replenish rune points (used to cast spells) on weekly and seasonal Holy days of your cult (if you worship successfully)
There are some passions that try to kick 'bad' role players in the pants and make them play their roles
Barbeesta Gor, Maran Gor, Argan Argar, Odayla, and Kargzant-as-Yelm get a cult write up

Re: OOC

And sure enough, Amilcar is a polar opposite to Akala :)

Amilcar is a small, skinny scribe. He’s sharp as a tack, but young, and while book smart, inexperienced and far from worldly.

Looking forward to the game

Re: OOC

Hi guys-
Thanks everyone for your progress in character generation, we'll be there soon.

A quick note on Lore-

One of the features of YGWV is that we are all bringing into the game our own ideas of what Glorantha is like, in some cases based on decades of playing and maybe posting extensively on basicroleplaying and the like.
That's great and part of the fun.
That said, I've been a player in games where the other players are constantly coaching the GM or correcting them about something they're doing "wrong" lore-wise.
That's not fun.
It's a bit of a fine line because obviously if I say "Well in My Glorantha, there are no trolls but there are orcs instead, and tehy're invisible, and Argrath is actually an android from the future," this is not why anyone signed up to play a Runequest game.

A vibe I want to bring into the game is the sense of the numinous. There are two reasons for this. One is it's easier for me as the GM is I don't think I need to know every detail and put everything into a mathematical construct that any Runequest player will immediately recognize what's going on. The other is that, yes magic is everywhere and denizens of Glorantha are in touch with the reality and power of the gods... but it's your own gods and your own magic.
The characters know the stories that they were told but they can't crack open the Guide to Glorantha or Wyrm's footnotes from 1986 or something and say, Ok this is how it is.
There will be weird mysteries, spells that the players aren't familiar with, and while I hope that all these things will resonate as being Glorantha-consistent and Glorantha-friendly, they won't necessarily be on page such and such of the guide or entirely consistent with the arguments on BRP.
In terms of lore my priority will be:
Runequest Roleplaying in Glorantha rules + bestiary >
Glorantha Sourcebook >
Cults of Prax >
The Guide to Glorantha >
everything else.

Re: OOC

Out of curiosity...

Anybody a straight up warrior?

I see a cook and a scribe (me!) so far, and the cook is probably more handy in a fight.

Hurtzag is a priestess of Seven Mothers, though having said that, where she can't convert she can kill, so she's handy enough in a fight.

Re: OOC

I know of at least one straight-up warrior on the blocks.

Hawendona is a lover not a fighter, she's pretty deft with her daggers though. Chef's speciality: slice'n'dice

Re: OOC

Is Hurztag an Uz woman?

Because I feel better already if so lol

She MUST have a troll maul so our fights can be filled with our enemies being “smashed around like rag dolls.”

According to Hawendona’s description, Amilcar will have to literally “look up” to her.  But at a skinny, smallish 5’8” that’s probably true of most of the party.  Slice and dice- sandwiches then?  Hawendona’s traveling delicatessen?  Amilcar’s on board- he needs to be fattened up. A roast beef Sando or three will do nicely.

I’d dont want to give the impression Amilcar is helpless in battle- he’s not. He’s just not a Titan or anything. He’s a one trick pony with a decent trick and some spells. As far as the motivation to fight- that can be a different thing- and harder for Amilcar to find :)

Yes she is a female dark troll, but no she doesn't wield a maul. She is one of a significant population of Uz on the Blue Moon Plateau who have fully embraced the Red Moon. Her cultural weapons are curved blades.

Zyxx is a Heavy Warrior. Defender of the Empire, protector of the truth faith of the Seven Mothers. Son of Zelah, Grandson of Zennor.

Zennor died Battle of Alda-Chur
Zelah survived many campaigns for the Empire
Zyxx nearly died defending his unit from monsters gaining animal scars to his arm, he nearly died again fighting the Sartraties, but the helm of Zennor protected him but left him with a distinctive scar that run down his next and into his chest on his left side.

Folks say that death follows Zyxx like his shadow where ever he goes.
