Re: IC 002: New Digs

"Back up, back up!" Sietnyas called to Drake and Tuur. "Don't let them surround you!" The corridor should be narrow enough to hold them. But at least he could cut down on the incoming crossbow fire, and maybe attract their fire on himself. Again he arced his dagger at the wounded crossbowman; it struck true, and the foe screamed and fell.

Sietnyas jumped about to be seen, grinning, waved the bloody dagger at the remaining crossbowman, and pointed it his way. "You're next!"

Re: IC 002: New Digs

Froodle stood, between the enemy and Frug.

He felt a little perturbed by the distinct lack of blood coming from either of the foes looking to encircle him.

He eyed the chestnut strider who had moved in and was clearly looking to gain a positional advantage. “Let him do that at his peril” he thought.

Froodle knew that if he managed to hit the enemy, he could issue a combat challenge that would mean any movement allowed him a further attack, with his inherent combat superiority giving him a better chance to hit and stop any movement to his rear.

All he had to do was hit them.

Froodle swung his not so trusty axe (he must find a better one someday) at the umber strider in a wide swing, looking to follow through into the flesh of the chestnut foe.
With a little surprise he hit with precision, following through as planned on the chestnut strider too.
“Let’s see what you’ve got now” he called to them

Standard: Froodle used cleave on the umber strider rolling 27 on d20+8 vs AC16 HIT!
Froodle rolled 11 on d10+4 vs the umber strider and caused 4 damage (str mod) to the chestnut strider.

Free: Combat challenge (mark) issued to both Umber and Chestnut striders

EDIT
Froodle marks the Umber strider and shift alongside him, away from the Chestnut strider, blocking the passageway (I read it as 2 squares wide). This would mean they could still flank me but they would both need to shift (or move if they prefer) to do so (opening up an opportunity attack on at least the Umber instead of the Chestnut).

Only the Umber striker is marked

Re: IC 002: New Digs

In reply to Froodle (msg # 204):

Frug, seeing the striders moving to flank makes the choice to call upon the divine energy he has grown to know. Protecting Froodle is the key to winning our way through this battle. Slacking about with his staff, Frug continues that focus on Froodle and divine radiant energy shield his ally. That shield lashes out at the Striders. The Umber Strider is able to reflexively avoid the divine energy, but the Chestnut Strider gets hit hard.

Moving in a bit, Frug tosses the curative infusion he had readied at their last break. Froodle needs the energy Frug thinks, as he knows that he can fade away if he’s hit and that Froodle will not be going anywhere.

Standard Blades of Astral Fire (burst 1 within 10): 17 using 1d20+6.  Blades of astral fire vs 15 reflex Chestnut Strider, 9 using 1d20+6 Blades of astral fire vs 15 reflex Umber Strider, and 14 using 1d10+5  Radiant damage chestnut strider. All ally’s in burst, Froodle, gain +4AC bonus until end of Frugs next turn.
Move: get close to Froodle to give curative infusion, as the minor action.

Re: IC 002: New Digs

Drake feels faint, woozy, unsteady from the blood loss. He’s taken aback at the ferocity of the attacks He’s endured in such a brief time. A rare sentence for Drake to formulate comes from the Dragonborn ‘I need some healing help here’.

Drake notices the smile on the Buff and Walnut striders faces as they smell victory over their enemy.

But Drake isn’t out of the game yet. He senses his protection from Bahamut fade and decides attack is the best defence.

Due to his blood loss … it makes the Dragonborn angry … no not  angry furious and he feels energy surging down his sword arm.

Drake strikes at the Walnut strider which hits its mark. The blade bites deeply opening a huge rend in the Walnut strider who crumples and dies at Drakes feet. Bahamut rewards Drake for his endeavor. The Buff striders smile fades.

Teamwork is key and Drake can see Tuur is injured he reaches out and touches Tuur allowing Bahamut to flow through him healing his wounds.

Drake knows he is hanging on by a thread and digs deep to try and stem the bleeding that will be his downfall. Bahamut again rewards the Dragonborn for his self preservation.

Re: IC 002: New Digs

Re: IC 002: New Digs

The umber strider looks a bit desperate, but still determined. He gives voice to a sound that's a cross between a bird whistle and a cricket chirp, and the other Karrnathi woodspeople seem to take notice. Then he lunges at Froodle with both of his blades, and both skitter off of the artifice that Frug has erected.

The chestnut strider snaps a salute to the umber one with his blade then moves away from the melee toward the fern-colored hunter. He reaches that intersection and repeats the odd signal, so that those in the other intersection can hear.

The buff strider sees Drake's divine defenses and decides not to both. He backs away, spits a foul epithet condemning all of the more wholesome divine forces, and then legs it down the same hall as the moss-dressed hunter.

The hunters targeting Froodle take his improved defenses as a test of their skill and let fly. One hits for effect, and gives off an exultant hoot, before both of them disappear down one of the two halls at their respective intersections.

The moss hunter also moves around a corner, but seems ready to target anyone that comes after him.

Re: IC 002: New Digs

The situation had certainly turned, though Drake looked worse for wear. Rather than retreat, it seemed now they would have to advance.

The enemy were making signals to each other, planning something... Sietnyas shrugged, and decided to go with the flow for now. He loped along the hall toward the retreating swordsman, moving to the side to stay out of sight of the crossbowman around the corner, and again let fly with his dagger, wounding him so he staggered slightly.  "Let's finish them!" he encouraged Tuur and Drake, and crouched, ready to edash into the fray in the wake of his allies.

Re: IC 002: New Digs

Froodle watched as the archers slinked off around the corners and the Chestnut strider retreated. “I’ll deal with you later” he muttered in the direction of the retreating foe, then called “Coward” in a much louder voice, hoping to tempt him back into the fight by challenging his honour – it meant something to him as a dragonborn at least.

With the Umber strider still in front of him, he decided now was not the time for precision. Though there was no-one else near, he still favoured the power of the cleave as he swung his battleaxe.

Standard: Froodle rolled 10 on d20+8 using cleave vs Umber strider AC 16  MISS!

As he watched his axe swing wildly, Froodle decided he had a decent position so did not move, challenging the Umber strider to forget others and just focus on him.

Re: IC 002: New Digs

Drake realises that the weakness is splitting the party, strength is unity. His wounds slowly leak and he knows that he is in a bad way.

‘Back to join the others’

Drake wants to pursue the buff strider knowing he is equally injured, but is concerned that he is simply leading the party further apart. He moves along the corridor back towards where Frug and Froodle are located fighting the Umber strider further down the corridor. He is unable to reach them just yet

Move: moves 5 squares back along the corridor to the junction.

Tuur took haste and moved alongside Drake to re-establish distance.
While doing so he sheathed his swords and drew out his bow, preparing for a new onslaught.
He bit his tongue as the foes were quite mobile and moved around too much for his liking.

Re: IC 002: New Digs

As the Umber strider steps away, Froodle is wise to the move, he has been anticipating it

He swings his axe, connecting with the foe but it is only a nick, not enough to take down the badly injured strider. Holding his side, the Karrnathi woodsman flees from the adventurers, and toward his allies. Froodle calls after him, reminding him that he is the one to face.

Despite their number and likely pace of escape, the warriors' footsteps are surprisingly quiet. The silence of the vast interior of a Sharn tower settles in, marred only slightly by echoes of activity somewhere in this maze of corridors.

There's also a shuffling sound back the way you came: the half-elf girl appears to be walking in her sleep.

Rolls 22 on d20+8 vs AC 16  HIT!
Froodle rolls 5 for damage on a d10+4

"Let's get the girl. She'll be safer with us if she's going to wander around when she's left on her own," Sietnyas said to Tuur. When he collects her, he tried to let her stay asleep, guiding her if he can - bad luck waking sleepwalkers - but wakes her from a distance if necessary. Then tried to find the others again.

"This place is bigger than I thought. How do we find the rest?" he asked.

“I agree let’s get the girl and see where she leads us maybe?” Drake nods … but winces from his wounds ‘can anyone patch me up? I appear to be leaking’ looking at the other adventurers and leaning against the nearest wall in a very unDragonborn like way.

If there’s an opportunity for a short rest Drake will use his healing surges to get back to full hp.

Re: IC 002: New Digs

The girl continues to sleepwalk, one hand trailing lightly on the nearest wall. She's murmuring a what sounds like a nursery rhyme or lullaby made up of nonsense words. It seems to have a call-and-response element, but there's no one to say the other part, whatever nonsense it might consist of.

Avoiding the Karrnathi mercenary guards is relatively easy. They are not rushing to engage the party, nor are they concealing their presence. Their steps and bird calls echo through the corridors, and they can be seen peeking out from distant intersections. They never seem to be waiting in the direction in which the girl wanders.

In short order it becomes apparent that both direct offensive or avoidant tactics will play into the mercs' hands. They're clearly leading the party away from certain paths within the tower. They also appear to shy away from the sleepwalking girl.

To take the momentum, the adventurers need to manipulate or fool the Karrns right back.

Re: IC 002: New Digs

Sietnyas wasn't sure what exactly it was the mercenaries were trying to keep them away from.  It might not be the other kids - perhaps there was other stuff they cared about more. Labs or storerooms or something? perhaps they could just ignore them if they weren't going to interfere. But at least he could surreptitiously mark some signs at the intersections so they could find their way back. He tries to stay unobserved while doing so.

"Let's see where she ends up, and plan from there?" he suggested to the others while the girl was stopped and calling for an answer. "Or do we want to try to lure the guards into a trap? Can't dig a pit or anything, but maybe put some oil down and try to get them to go into it, then light it up?"

Good thinking Sietnyas, Frug thinks to himself. “It’s good to know if we end up going back through where we have been too. I like the idea of getting to where this young girl is going, which hopefully is near the others who were kidnapped too. I’m going to try to see if there’s anything that I can fashion into some makeshift artifice that can help us loose our watchers if we’re in need of it.”

Re: IC 002: New Digs

The path the girl follows is free from obstruction. In fact, for a moment, the mercenaries seem to lose track of the group, as if they can't believe that's the direction they would go.

Most of the corridors have been somewhat cleaned from the typical abandoned, neglected, animals-and-worse-have-lived-multiplied-and-died-here state of most Sharn corridors (including some in active use by people), such that there's nothing much for Frug to make use of or repurpose. However, he does come across one magical light fixture that is fluctuating oddly. Its minor magic might be able to be used in an unintended way.

The girl finally stumbles into a chamber with several other smaller chambers off of it. One has had metal bars fitted over the opening, turning into a prison cell. Inside the cell is an adult human woman with a tear-stained face. She sees the girl and gasps, then emits a stream of nonsense syllables as she reaches through the bars to the girl. A jagged, purple stain wraps around one forearm.

The girl walks into the woman's arms and the two sit together, joined awkwardly, but still joined. The woman's nonsense turns into the response to the girl's babbled lullaby. The woman looks at the party and she holds the girl a bit tighter, protectively. She narrows her eyes at you, but then seems to relax into the girls aura of fatigue.

It takes effort to remain alert around the girl now, and remaining still around her is likely to lead to one drifting off, if not falling to sleep entirely.

The woman also has an aberrant dragonmark. While near her one can only speak or write nonsense and cannot read.

Tuur felt a growing uneasiness in his body.
Bow still in his hand, he contemplated to simply put it away, as he could not find it in himself to fire nor risk anything to a mother and daughter regardless of the circumstances. They appeared as victims..of something to him.

He eyed the others.
"What now? I have a bad feeling about all this..."
He turned his gaze around, to ensure they were not watched from afar.

"I agree with Frug, we need to free them"
he continues
"The bars, turning the exit into a cell will be problematic. If your lockpicking skills don't work we can always try to use brute strength to maybe bend them?"

In saying this he outwardly gives an impression of immense strength, bravado and honour being his way, but inwardly he suspects that even two dragonborn may struggle to make an impact.

"I like the idea of a rope for anyone getting close to them. Maybe we can communicate in some way that they would move away while we tackle the lock?"

"Do you think they could be hungry?", food always being in the forefront of Froodle's mind, we could put some food by the lamp a little distance away perhaps."

If time allows, Frug goes and collects some of the magic lights and rigs some tripwires in the halls that lead to this place. The idea being that if anyone comes down the hall the flickering light gets covered and alerts us to others approaching us.
