Re: Chance Meetings

He'd been worried for a bit, but things were looking up! "Bree-yark!" Sietnyas barked, waving his sunrod in the enemies' faces, causing them to blink. Dodging and jostling all around, positions in the confused melee shifted, and Sietnyas slipped behind one of the soldiers, stabbing him and missing a wide slash at the other. He then rolled sideways to make it harder to trap him again.

Minor action: Stay Back. Enemies in squares illuminated by his sunrod (20 squares) are at -2 to attack until the end of his next turn.
Move action: Shifty Manuever. he and allies in Burst 2 shift 1. Sietnyas is temporarily flanking the gruff knight with Drake.
Standard action: Acrobat's blade trick. Hit Gruff knight for 17, miss stout knight. Then shift 1 to the side, next to Drake, so Stout Knight can't shift to flank him.

Re: Chance Meetings

"Get them!" commands the sergeant. At this the remaining troopers change positions. The one who had been guarding the sergeant moves out into the open shield at the ready, and the other moves up to Tuur. The trooper doesn't attack the avenger, but works to foul any defensive efforts, to give the zombie more of an opening.

Froode is up!

Trooper 3:
Move: Walk adjacent to Tuur and gravehound.
Standard: Aid attack. Gravehound gets a +2 bonus to its next attack on Tuur.

Trooper 4:
Move: Walk to middle of battlefield, where #3 had been standing.
Standard: Total defense.

Sietnyas: (24/30; 17+4/14/17/12) Near a pillar, engaged with gruff knight. Marked by gruff knight.

Re: Chance Meetings

Froodle enjoyed downing the two troopers, but now the immediate battlefield seems to be getting crowded. Barely enough room for his axe to swing, though his shield appears to be moving freely.

He looks into the eyes of the Stout Knight and takes careful aim with his battleaxe. As it slices through the knight’s armour he follows up with a verbal challenge, inviting the knight to keep trying to hit him. He accompanies this with a beckoning gesture in case the knight does not understand through the distraction of pain.

Standard: Froodle rolled 25 on d20+10 using sure strike vs stout knight AC19  HIT!
Froodle rolled 7 for damage using d10
Free: Issue combat challenge to Stought knight

Re: Chance Meetings

The leader appears to dislike Frug's influence on the fight and so draws a bead on him again. Frug's day gets worse.

The zombie dog circles around Tuur and attacks again, while the trooper makes things easier for it. This has little effect, though.

The two knights are in a tough spot, but they seem to relish it. Despite little hope of success, between being dazzled with light and Frug's divine protection, the stouter of the two knights lays into Froodle. The gruff one continues to pick on Sietnyas. Both are ineffective.

Drake may have something to say about this!

Sergeant:
Standard: 12:30, Today: DM Paul, for the NPC Sergeant, rolled 18 using 1d20+5.  Crossbow (with -2) +5 vs. AC 18 of Frug. Hit.

Stout knight:
Standard: 12:43, Today: DM Paul, for the NPC Stout knight, rolled 20 using 1d20+7.  Smashing strike (with -2) +7 vs. AC 25 of Froodle. Miss.

Gruff knight:
Move: Shift adjacent to Sietnyas, so the two knights aren't the only two in any upcoming blasts.
Standard: 12:54, Today: DM Paul, for the NPC Gruff knight, rolled 13 using 1d20+7.  Smashing flail (with -2) +7 vs. AC 21 of Sietnyas. Miss.

Re: Chance Meetings

The melee with Drake, Sietnyas and Froodle is a bit of a mess, but the knights should be positioned so that there's no way to hit both with a burst without targeting Froodle (unless he moves) and no way for Froodle to target both with a blast (unless he moves). Basically, one is on one side of him, and one is on another, non-flanking side.

Re: Chance Meetings

Drake decides that there are too many of the enemies still standing  and they need thinning out.

He shouts “You will ALL face me by Bahamut” as he strikes with the Frost sword at the Gruff knight. All Enemies within 3 square’s of Drake hears the shout and they feel the Divine sanction and know that they are marked by Drake.

The Frost sword cuts through the knights armour and bites deeply into his flesh underneath. A gaping wound to the abdomen opens up as the Frost sword passes through. The gruff knight is barely standing after Drakes blow.

Drake whispers a virtuous prayer to Bahamut to protect him for the oncoming onslaught and steels himself in readiness.

Standard Action: Valorous Strike Encounter power CHA v AC

1D20+9 = 19 V 19 AC = HIT

Damage 2 W + CHA damage = 20

All enemies within 3 squares of Drake are marked by Drakes Divine Sanction

Minor Action: Utility power Virtue - Drake expends a healing surge but gains no hit points he gains 8 Temporary Hit points. Due to spending a healing surge it triggers Drakes Feat Virtuous Recovery which again enabled Resist All for 2 points till end of my next turn.

Frug gets hit again with another crossbow bolt and returns a radiant blast without taking the time to focus his invocation and it flies wild. He realizes how hurt he is and that he’s not going to do his companions any good going down in this fight, so he tasked out the curative infusion that he made at the start of the day, just in case. Re: Chance Meetings

That big fellow looked hurt, but his allies outside the nearby tussle seemed in need of help. Sietnyas decided to disengage. He backed away from his foe and flipped his dagger toward a weak spot in his armor - it sliced deep behind his knee as it arced back to Sietnyas, and the knight staggered. He raised himself for one last blow at Drake, but it clanged against his armor, and the knight sagged to the ground.

Move - Shift one away from gruff knight.
Standard - ranged basic vs gruff knight. Hit. Didn't roll for damage - only 1 hit point left! Knight's fantaic attack vs Drake missed.

Re: Chance Meetings

The trooper near Tuur tosses a cloth bundle to the other, then moves to a better position on Tuur. "For the Queen of Death!" he shouts, and holy radiance envelops him as he brings down his flail on the avenger. The blow connects but the divine retribution had taken too much out of the trooper for it to cause harm.

The remaining trooper defiantly unfurls the battle standard he had been tossed. It is a shimmering blue fabric, with the faint design of a green claw in the center of it. Then he walks up to Drake, fire in his eyes.

Now is Froodle's chance!

Trooper #3:
Minor: Toss battle standard to Trooper #4.
Move: Shift to flanking Tuur with gravehound.

Re: Chance Meetings

Froodle eyes the stout knight, then the banner holding trooper that has advanced to Drake. He moves around the knight, positioning himself so that he can still swing his axe at the knight, while at the same time giving himself a clear path for his dragon breath of fire to consume the trooper without scorching Drake.

As he moves, however, he leaves an opening for the knight to swing his flail, taking advantage of Froodle’s guard being down for a moment to devastating effect. Froodle, his concentration faltering from the strength of the knight’s blow returns a swing, but his battleaxe misses the mark by some way.

He turns on the spot, and breaths with fury towards the trooper that has just placed the banner in the ground, only to see that in his efforts to avoid any scorching of his ally he has overcompensated and also misses the trooper.

Move: Froodle moves around the stout knight remaining adjacent but opening an effective line to hit the trooper with the banner while not hitting Drake with dragon breath.

Stout knight makes a basic flail opportunity attack prompted by the move at d20+9 rolling 29 vs AC 21 for a critical hit doing 14 points of damage. HIT!

Standard: Froodle uses sure strike (d20+10) swinging his axe against the stout knight rolling 13 vs AC19 MISS!

Minor: Froodle uses dragon breath (d20+6) rolling 11 vs Trooper 4 RF13 MISS!

Froodle leaves Drake’s divine sanction in place and does not combat challenge either the stout knight or Trooper 4.

Re: Chance Meetings

Heedless of the wrath of the gods, the zombie hound snaps at Tuur. Spiritual energy vaporizes the monster from within, but not before its filthy jaws latch onto the holy man and pull him down.

The sergeant clearly sees an opening here. He drops his crossbow, takes out his flail and barrels toward the fallen human. "The Emerald Claw repays!" he shouts as he brings his weapon down. It's a cruel, cowardly blow and Tuur suffers grievously.

This assault is shocking enough that the trooper is able to take advantage of it to slip behind Drake. The knight also sidesteps and makes his own flail maneuver against the flanked paladin. The terrorist's flail strikes true, but caroms harmlessly, rebuffed by holy agency. Still, it's enough to impinge upon the dragonborn's honor.

Is Drake going to stand there and take that?

Re: Chance Meetings

Drake observes Tuur crumple with multiple injuries after the dying attack of the Gravehound and the flail attack by the Sergeant.

This will not do. Drake is aware of the proximity of the trooper and Stout Knight but needs to get to Tuur to help him. Time is of the essence as it’s clear that Tuurs lifeblood is draining away as Drake looks on.

Drake moves away from the trooper and stout knight towards the Sergeant. As he does so he allows the stout knight and trooper to attack him. The trooper mistimes his flail attack as it wasn’t what he’d expected Drake to do. The knight however is more experienced and times his attack to Drakes open back well, denting Drakes armour and causing crush injuries to his back.

Drake continues moving away and attacks the Sergeant using a Glorious charge invoking Bahamuts name. The Frost sword swing is timed well and it cuts deep into the body of the Sergeant. Bahamut creates a bright green healing wave for all Drakes allies that radiates 2 squares in every direction.

Tuurs chest begins to raise and lower again and the bleeding stops although he is still badly injured.

Drake leans down and touches Tuur invoking Bahamuts name to channel healing power through Drake to help Tuur recover.

Opportunity attack : Stout knight 1D20+ 11 = 27 V 21 AC  HIT

Damage 1D10+4 =11 damage

Opportunity attack Trooper : 1D20+8= 14 V 21 AC MISS

Move: Close with Tuur and Sergeant adjacent to both provoking opportunity attacks

Standard: Glorious charge (no requirement to actually charge) Effect heal allies 3HP within 2 squares of Drake healing Tuur and Froodle

1D20 + 9 Glorious Charge = 21 V 16 AC HIT

Damage 2 D8 +5 -1 = 15

Minor Action: Lay on hands ( 2nd use) Drake expends a healing surge to heal Tuur with Feats Healing hands and Virtuous recovery triggered

Tuur further healed a further 11 points

It’s so busy in all that melee, Frug thinks to himself. He had kept the sergeant in his sights, while that enemy ran into the fray. He let loose the divine energy, but again it went without getting the sergeant in any significant way.
Frug decides that it’s time to return to his arcane creativity and changes how he’s going to power up his staff as he moves to a different pillar. Hoping that the changes in perspective and tactics will be able to help his friends inside that mess.

Tuur shook his head. He had been blessed with a second chance, and would have to learn from this. He had been reckless and stationary and it cost him. He nodded at Drake, and trying to shake the pain from the hound but was still to weak to prevent it. He dug deep and found resolve to keep standing. he raised his defenses and focused on being of aid to Drake.

Re: Chance Meetings

The trooper redoubles his efforts and moves back to get a running start against Sietnyas. He slams his flail down again and again in a fanatical rage, but he's not terribly skilled at it and the rogue is only somewhat inconvenienced.

Trooper:
Move: Walk to where he can charge Sietnyas.
Standard: Charge Sietnyas. 17:26, Today: DM Paul, for the NPC Trooper, rolled 28 using 1d20+9.  Flail (with charge) +9 vs. AC 17 of Sietnyas. Hit. 4 damage.

Re: Chance Meetings

Froodle sees the trooper land his flail on Sietnyas and the sergeant ready his next swing. While he thinks the sergeant is the more prepared of the two enemies and likely to strike first, he also knows that Drake is wearing some tough armour.

So Froodle moves to behind the trooper, using the position of Sietnyas to give him an advantage as the trooper can’t adequately defend against attacks from opposite directions.

He takes careful aim with his battleaxe and swings a neat blow that slices through the armour and lays the trooper out, dead on the floor. The fanaticism of this trooper is something to admire though as he swings his flail wildly at Froodle on the way down, but hits nothing but air.

Move: Move to a position adjacent to the trooper that gives combat advantage with Sietnyas
Standard: Sure strike with battleaxe rolling 22 on d20+12 against trooper AC 18 HIT!
Damage rolled 3 on d10 (2 if the -1 for the standard is still in play), enough to kill the trooper
Trooper rolled 15 on d20+8 using a flail vs Froodle AC21 MISS!

The sergeant seems determined to finish his work on Tuur. But before he takes another swing, he looks at Drake and says - almost apologetically - "You can't stop the Emerald Claw. The Blood is rising." His weapon blow seems to reveal the soldier's fatigue.

Finish it off, Drake.

Standard: 11:51, Today: DM Paul, for the NPC Sergeant, rolled 8 using 1d20+7.  Flail +7 vs. AC 18 of Tuur. Miss.

Re: Chance Meetings

Drake is filled with the pleasure of seeing all the enemies vanquished but one. The Sergeant facing Tuur is on his last legs, weak, staggering uncoordinated and bloody. But Drake admires his stoicism.

“By Bahamut you will face me” speaks Drake commanding the Sergeant to focus on him and not Tuur.

Drake arcs his Frost Longsword at the Sergeant …. The Sergeant’s eyes widen as he sees the impending doom artfully glittering towards him. The sword hits causing a gout of blood to run down his thigh and the Sergeant to start to collapse like a puppet with its strings cut.

However, yet again the stoicism of the Sergeant shines through,  as he flicks out his flail towards the less armoured Tuur.

The arc looks to be on target, but just before it connects the compulsion of Drake’s divine challenge causes the Sergeant to glance at Drake, the Flails arc changes ever so slightly and to swing wide  a hairs breadth from striking Tuur.
The enemies dead bodies lay around, Drake nods his head at the honour of a battle won, and his eyes rest on the crimson battle standard of honour as it flutters gently in the breeze.

Minor action: Divine Challenge Sergeant

Standard Acton: Bolstering Strike CHA v AC
Drake gains 3 THP
1D20+9 23 V 16 AC = HIT

Damage 1D8 +5 -1 standard of Honor = 11 DEAD

Frug walks over to the party softly muttering, “Wow that got nasty quickly. It’s amazing what you all can do with those blades. I’m not sure what’s going on with my invocations, but I will be working on it.” He is looking at the remains of the enemies and not really talking directly to anyone specific.

Re: Chance Meetings

As the last of the Emerald Claw team drops, the area falls quiet. Well, as quiet as it can, with the nearby building spewing smoke and cries of [/b]alarm and confusion[/b] echoing throughout this level of the tower. By the time the party has picked themselves up, though, a bucket brigade has been started from the nearest fountain and a magewright has been found who has begun some sort of suppressing ritual to help with the fire. This gives the heroes of the moment time to deal with other things.

Such as, for one thing, assessing the fallen foes. The terrorists don't have much on them, apart from their weapons, armor and overcoats. They did leave behind their battle standard, though. While it might seem inappropriate to carry the standard of an enemy, it looks rather like this was something not made for the Emerald Claw, but repurposed by them. The faint image of a claw seems to overlay older, fainter images that hint at ownership by other, and likely more honorable, groups.

For another thing, other parties start to show up at the scene. The first is a contingent of the City Watch that must have been in the area. This group takes some steps to establish order on the scene, and then to ascertain what's going on. To this end, they request that the adventurers remain where they are for now, and then give witness as to the recent events. But they themselves don't ask many questions.

Shortly after the Watch arrives, a bit of a crowd starts to gather around the scene. Not long thereafter, another figure pops in. Literally, out of thin air. The fellow is an eladrin who must have not wanted to squeeze through the crowd. He has pink hair in a short style, and wears relatively mundane clothing for an eladrin: a decent suit and boots, with a long and voluminous coat. He seems to know the Watchmen, who allow him to look around the scene. He approaches the party after a time.

"Greetings," he says, peering at them with grey, pupilless eyes. "I'm Crivens, licensed inquisitive. I work with the Watch now and then, but most importantly now. Quite a scene here. I gather you lot more or less stumbled upon it and were caught up. Lucky, but as they say, chance favors the prepared, and you appear to have been prepared. Adventurers, are you? Come to Sharn to work for the Houses? Or maybe the University? Not for one of the gangs, though, I'm sure! No, no. But come, let's have your names, and your business here."

Crivens commands the group's attention for the moment, but it's hard not to notice a half-elven woman with tablet and stylus who is trying to get past the guards as she takes notes, and a cluster of people in the crowd who can't seem to take their eyes off of Frug.

As mentioned, the battle standard is a battle standard of honor, useful in a group with two defenders.

After you interact with Crivens for a bit, I'll go into who the woman and the Frug fans are.

At that Frug notices that there’s a crowd and that there’s some attention on him.

Re: Chance Meetings

Why did the watch have to show up so fast? He hadn't properly searched the Emerald Claw soldiers yet. Sietnyas chittered in frustration. That flag, at least he could take that flag...  he quickly rolled it up and pretended it was a staff, and loped over to join Frug and the others talking with Crivens.

"They came out of the building on fire," he piped up. "And they attacked us right away. Like they thought someone would try to stop them! They were up to something in there. Maybe they set the fire? Oh. I'm Sietnyas."
