What do we have in the way of group equipment? I see we have two vehicles to start and they're both armed and have radios. Do we need to purchase some man portable anti-armor weapons with our character funds? Claymores? WP grenades?

Private Vernon "Vern" Jackson checking in!

Vern is a former Staff Sergeant (E6) in the battalion scout platoon and graduate of the army sniper school. Received an Article 15 Non-Judicial Punishment in 1998, reduction in rank by one grade to Sergeant (E5). Another NJP in 1999, reduction in rank by one grade to Specialist (E4). Another NJP in 2000, reduction in rank to Private (E1). Recent advancement to Private (E2).

In the words of the battalion commander, "Jackson is a good soldier in the field, but a pain in the ass when he's out of the line. I'd trust the sonofabitch with my life, but not my daughter's chastity."

Booted out of the scout platoon for his surliness and drinking, Vern has been reassigned to a rifle company. He brought his M21 with him and serves as a designated marksman. He has a Iranian ZOAF pistol (SIG P226 copy) in a locally tooled leather holster. He has a Gerber Mk II fighting knife strapped to his leg and goes nowhere without his scratched-up brass Zippo lighter. He wears 3-color Desert Camouflage Uniform with repaired (canvas reinforced) elbows, knees, and seat. He wears a boonie hat with an unruly mop of non-regulation hair poking out. He typically has a week's worth of facial hair that has keeps trimmed.

Bob McCoy, Bob was born on the outskirts of Philidelphia. Bob learned early that school was probably not his thing. After graduation, he joined the Army as an Airborne trooper.

His dream was of a Ranger tab and a green beret to go with it but the war came between him and his dream.

Hi fellow players!  I'll be running SGT Rafael Ortiz.

Rafael Ortiz was an anchor baby, born in the U.S.A to illegal Mexican immigrants who, under the cover of darkness, crossed the U.S. border between Laredo and McAllen, Texas.  His parents worked as farm labor, paid under the table, to gather crops in east Texas and west Louisiana farms.  A citizen by birth, Rafael attended school in Texas, where his coursework focused on blue collar classes, like auto mechanics.  He joined the U.S. Army when he turned 18, enlisting as an 11 Hotel - Heavy Anti-armor Weapons Crewman.  After a stint in the 3rd ID in Germany, he was assigned to 9th shortly before the war.

I'm still working on gear, but it'll probably center on an M16A2 with a spare bolt carrier group.  That Iranian G3 is tempting, but the ammo is heavy and Inshallah, Raf will be dealing more with ATGM firing and reloads than engaging targets with a rifle anyway.

Cpl. William "Bill" Clay enlisted prior to being drafted.   He had gone to San Diego State a party school, as a psychology major.

He enlisted for Legal Specialist when he still had visions of going to Law School.   And he did attend the legal clerk school.   Everyone knew they were assigned to the bases and never left CONUS.  A sure thing.  Or so he thought.  HOWEVER!

Clay had done exceptionally well on the DLAB and was sent to language school.  And just like that, he found himself assigned to a Civil Affairs unit.   He avoided joining various CAT teams and SF patrols.  Instead, he spent most of his time at HQ processing claims for damage against allied forces or reviewing contracts with locals hired for services.

The need for troops caught up with Clay and he was sent to fill the desperate need.   And here he is.

William "Bill" Clay has sandy blond hair, light brown eyes, stands about 5-10 and is of a light but muscular build.  He was considered handsome in college and he still is.  He surely cares about how he looks.  That is shown by his equipment is clean and ahem, new.  The same can be said for his uniform.   Of course its new.  He has almost never gone to the field.

Clay carries a standard issue M9 in a shoulder holster.   He also has a issue Mossberg 590 that he is apathetic in having to carry.  Clay is definitely not a career soldier.  As he often says, "I'm no John Wayne.  I'm a clerk."

Groups vehicles (obviously), each with vehicle mounted weapons systems, some ammunition (TBD), vehicle mounted radios, full tanks of gas, an 20-liter jerrycans of potable water.

If you want to dump character funds into group equipment for the vehicles - spare tires, pioneer kits, cammo nets, jerrycans for fuel, etc. - then go ahead.

Just my 2 cents. Please add your own ideas.

Spare tire for each vehicle on the swing out mount.

I don't think we should mount jerrycans of fuel on the exterior of the vehicle. That makes me nervous.

Camo netting (inc. poles and tie downs) for each vehicle.

The BII tool kit for each vehicle.

The BII jack for each vehicle.

Ditto fire extinguisher.

Chemical agent alarm on each vehicle.

2x 5 gallon plastic jerrycans for water mounted on brackets for each vehicle.

A block and tackle kin in at least one of the vehicles.

A towing chain for each vehicle.

A pioneer kit for at least one of the vehicles.

I would go with multiple pioneer kits, E-tools suck and take forever.   Real shovels and picks will help go faster if we need to dig in for ourselves, or worse, dig in our vehicles.

Water, since David is mentioning it, water may be a problem. I would also do the math of how many people and figure that out.   How many days.

I would think, maybe we set up a cache depending on the mission.   Maybe some supplies at a rally point.

  Camo netting for sure.

  Other items IF Possible:

Runway planking for soft sand and maybe as improvised armor on the sides of the vehicles.
Rope
2 Tow Bars much better and more control than tow chain.
Ammo
Food
Med Supplies

Also basic items as a shovel and a bundle of empty sandbags.

In addition, two field-telephones per vehicle and 2 500m rolls of wire with three sets of extra batteries.

The only reason my PC will have an e-tool is to dig cat holes for his shit. If we can get a pioneer kit for each vehicle then that would be excellent.

It looks like 9 total PCs & NPCs right now. My own PC will be carrying 2 canteens - a 1-quart and a 2-quart. I would encourage everybody to start with at least 2 canteens each.

As soon as we get a mission brief we should request a shit ton of ammunition, rations, fuel, etc. and arrange to setup a couple of caches. Drop the caches on our way out and use them on our way back.

Is there a unit medic? I feel like we need to either recruit a medic for the game or designate whoever has the highest Medical skill.

Currently we have a total of 9 PCs and NPCs with 3 vehicles. That breaks down neatly as 3 people per vehicle. All of the vehicles are combat capable: one with a TOW launcher, one with a MK 19, and one with a M60. If we luck out and get a few more players in the game and the GM is willing to give us a 4th vehicle maybe we could get a M998 as a logistics and support vehicle. We could even think about a trailer for that vehicle. We could haul a lot of fuel and water with that.

That makes 2 of us with M21 rifles. I think we've got a good scouting team here.

Re: OOC Chat

In reply to Vernon Jackson (msg # 18):

The campaign will start at the forward operating base for 2-60 Infantry. Your team will receive vehicles, vehicle weapons, ammunition, fuel, water, and rations for the mission. The S4 is unlikely to provide you with supplies to cache (i.e. the GM isn't going to provide you with a surplus). If your group wants additional food etc. then it will need to come from character funds/equipment allowance. Just shout out with something like "my PC has $2000 remaining in equipment allowance and I'd like to donate that to group funds for food and ammunition." Then your lovely GM will allocate that money to black market purchases on top of what the S4 will officially issue.

Re: OOC Chat

In honor of our RDF game, I'm ordering Iranian food tonight from Talabat:

Khoresht-E-Bamia (1) 2.500
Keshek-E-Bademjan (1) 1.250
Dolma (3) 4.500
Shirazi (1) 1.250
Chelo Kabab-E-Joojeh (1) 3.250
Ash-E-Adas (1) 1.000
1 piece Iranian bread (6) 1.200
Khoresht-E-Ghormeh Patate (1) 3.000
Masta Khiar Salad (1) 0.000

Though honestly, I have no idea what half of that means.  I do know that the Khoresht-E-Bamia is okra and lamb stew..  and being a southern boy, I love me some okra.

PS: Persian Food Coma now!

Captain Jack Quaid here.

A bit of a loner at college, an early adopter of computers but with a love of the outdoors. Always wanted to join the military and do his part.

As he had a gift with electronics and was pretty good at puzzles he soon was spotted and guided into Military Intelligence.  As he rose through the ranks he specialised in the Middle East, concentrating on Iran.  This has lead him to where we are now....
