Backgrounds, I prefer, have a free gain and loss. This, however, requires a great deal of trust. Trust I know I haven't earned yet. If you'd all prefer, you can ask for XP cost and refunds. Know this, however, most backgrounds work out better to have them be freely gained, and so freely lost. It's, after all, up to you all, but I'd advise against strictly banking on me robbing your character of backgrounds without good reason. Good reason can be error, but I, as a participant, new to you all, will not do so without discussion during and afterward.

A great example of how this rule comes up, is Resources. When you spend your resources you lose a dot. This is allowed, by me, to be "refreshed" if you make even small effort to. It, will not, however, prevent a domino effect if you find yourself in that position. So if you have resources 3 and use that, you are highly advised not to spend resources 2; unless you really understand it will effectively cripple your income and budget, both, and that combination is very unwise.

That said, I'll also be introducing tone and genre and all that. ST session 0 type stuff. Just not ATM.
