0003 - Sughd, Yitri Chrysanthemum Grove (Day 1)

It is day in the valleys of Sughd, and the Chrysanthemum Grove of Yitri where you live is filled with the humming and sounds of cicadas flexing their tymbals, and occasional buzzing of bees swooping past the forest air through which bright rays of light pierce the leaf covered ground to form puddles of sunlight.

You find yourself at the bar counter of Klusklus' tavern, where much of the other pixies, not busy gathering berries or hunting stray aphid-men who wander unknowingly into the territory of the tree-homes, make their repast and partake Klusklus' popular brew of mead.

One patron you realise is an unfamiliar sight particularly this early in the morning is Stablemaster Tylfi who slouches sadly at a darker corner of the bar counter drinking mead. Judging from the two empty crystal mugs on the table, it seems that he's been drinking quite a lot.

Klusklus stands beyond the counter stealing glances at Tylfi, looking visibly awkward while he polishes his crystal mugs with a piece of silk cloth. When he notices your presence he makes a sigh of relief and greets you.

"Morning Myll, what will it be for you? A bowl of Jujubes? Dried Hawthorn?"

In reply to Myll (msg # 2):

"What? Me too? But I own..." Klusklus falters for a second before waving his hand and turning about to his cabinets. "Wait... never mind. Alright, three plates of dried hawthorne it is. That'll be a silver piece. Thank you very much...."

While Klusklus prepares the dried hawthorne, Tylfi on the other hand just nods to himself a few times, mumbling, while taking another sip from his mug. It seems that he doesn't even notice that he's being spoken to.

Eventually Klusklus returns with three plates, he places them in front of Tylfir and beckons you to the darker part of the tavern counter.

"Pretty generous today aren't you Myll... did you meet with a windfall recently?" Klusklus asks you, trying to stir up conversation perhaps to cheer up the nearby Tylfi.

In reply to Myll (msg # 4):

Klusklus nods after your speech.

"But as you see there is no cheering up this stableman. Especially one who's lost all his work overnight! Oy! Tylfi are you with us?"

Tylfi looks up at Klusklus for a few moments, blinks twice, and then looks back down again making a sigh.

"He's been like since dawn. Though I doubt he'll be better anytime soon. Beetle herding be difficult and I guess one builds a closeness with them beetles with time. Still, it escapes me why the Rhino Beetles would all disappear like that. And what's even stranger is that all the eggs were destroyed too!"

Tylfi shudders and a tear rolls down his fat red cheeks as he hears about the eggs.

"Another mead... please..." Tylfi mumbles after which Klusklus almost immediately places a new mug of mead on the counter as though he had prepared for it in advance.

"Surely you don't intend on going there Myll? It's a lost cause I say... Even if you do find them I doubt they'd even want to return if they have lost their mind so much as to go to such a rocky place..."

Klusklus speaks, to which Tylfi sobs again and weakly places rests his empty mug on the counter.

"Myll... You don't have to do it for me... God knows what lurks out in those rocky parts...!" Tyfli exclaims.

"Well I hope you haven't gone as insane as those Rhino Beetles!" Klusklus too expresses his surprise.

There is suddenly a lot of muttering amongst the tavern crowd following your remark. You notice especially some of younger tavern goers stealing glances at you, their fiery glittering eyes overflowing with interest and excitement at perhaps the mention of adventure that would free them from the day to day idyll of the Yitri treehomes.

As you look towards the crowd with an inviting expression, you notice 4 fellow young pixies approaching with great interest:

Bram, a pixie with missing teeth, he employs the use of a tiny Bang Nakh

Oski, a pixie half the height of others, she uses a tiny kukri and a shield fashioned from a dried scarab beetle's shell

Runa, a tanned very healthy strong looking pixie, she uses a large pixie's dagger as a large sword.

Dridi, a very thin pixie, he uses a pixie's dagger.

Looking at the gear of these pixies, it is likely that two of them spent their idle time wandering or sneaking outside the treehomes to explore, as much of their equipment does not seem to be common in Yitri.

"If you're looking to navigate the Rocky parts down south, count on us, me and Oski found these in the ruins there, very neat, right?" the toothless pixie named Bram boasts with a proud expression while pointing at his chest with his right thumb.

In reply to Myll (msg # 12):

"Uh, you mean the Rhino Beetles right? Oh no I seem to be hearing things now..." Tylfi hiccups as he scratches his head.

"I am glad that you want to aid me... and it does seem that Bram here knows the way mre or less... Alright, I'll tell you some things about my Rhino beetles..."

You learn that Rhino beetles often prefer to stay in shaded areas such as inside logs, under trees or sometimes in caves, and are more active at night. They make hiss-like squeaks when in distress, which might help track them.

They usually feed on rotting wood, fruits and nectar, but Tylfi usually feeds them crushed fruits and berries.

Normally males Rhino beetles are attracted by the bug musk of the female beetles - Tylfi hands you a bottle of this. Just removing the crystal stopper is enough to draw the attention of male Rhino beetles. They are also attracted by the hissing squeaks of female beetles.

As for the female beetles, they are more attracted by food - in particular fragrant wood. Tylfi hands you a small bag containing piece of sandalwood that creates a very distinctive and strong scent.

As for the handling of the beetles, it is the easiest to tie two cords of rope on their horns to steer them while flying by using the rope as reins, or just use one rope to lead them. It is advised not to use the reins if they are agitated which can be discerned from their hiss-like squeaks. Otherwise, especially during the day, they are quite obedient.

"I hope you succeed... but don't force yourself to confront great danger for my sake!"

"I can," the healthy pixie Runa interjects. She bares her tiny pixie teeth and blows air through them making a slightly snake-like "Chih!" hissing sound that sound somewhat similar to the squeaks of the Rhino Beetles.

The other young pixies willing to join you try to do so, and all make reasonably similar sounds with the exception of Bram due to him missing a large number of teeth - the rest of the pixies laugh at this as does Bram himself. The hissing squeaks of a Rhino beetle seems reasonably easy to imitate.

"Yes... that's certainly the sound the Rhino Beetle makes when they are disturbed, often to tell others to keep their distance. I'm not sure if it will be of much help to you though... The females' mating call is quite similar though it is at intervals and is quite different from the hisses of the males, though the nuance is very subtle and I am not sure if I can even explain the difference to you..." Tylfi follows up.

Tylfi blows a few puffs of hair throw his teeth every 1 second, making the hissing "Chih!" sound. It sounds almost as similar to the rest of the young pixies' imitations, and you can hardly tell the difference.

Tylfi explains that the hisses have to be slightly shorter in duration, though despite many attempts by the other pixies to imitate, they can't seem to get it right.

"You have to put your tongue on the roof of your mouth, and then flick it down the the bottom quickly while blowing air out of your teeth, I think..." Tylfi tries to explain, "It is quite nuanced, and it took me a few months to get right..."

The pixies try to imitate the sound again with this new advice, and Tylfi nods at some sounds. It seems that you and the pixies will be able to get it right once every 3 hisses, according to Tylfi's judgement, and to go any further would require length experience working with Rhino Beetles. (When any of the pixies willing to join your or you yourself try imitate a mating call, you will succeed on a 5-6 on a roll of 1d6)

"Need any DRINKS on your journey, Myll? I imagine it will be a LONG one... I will FILL your WINESKINS..." Klusklus suddenly interrupts with a loud voice while making slightly annoyed expression, likely because his tavern suddenly appears to be becoming a makeshift seminar about Rhino Beetles, as more and more pixies begin to surround Tylfi and your party, trying to imitate the sound of Rhino Beetles.

In reply to Myll (msg # 20):

With your wineskins filled with fresh water, you head out of the tavern to make arrangements for your adventure.

According to Bram and Oski, who are familiar with the regions to the south more untraveled by the pixies of the treehomes of Yitri, it would take around 3 days to fly to the Dwarven ruin where they found some old treasures.

Normally with the help of Rhino beetles it would take half the time, but seeing how they are all gone, it would mean they would have to haul all their supplies instead. The young pixies agree to pay for their own food supplies.

Pertaining to the dangers south of the Treehomes, Oski says that there are some lost, solitary Aphid-men who do make it there, but most will be almost half-dead as there are not many flowers there to feed from.

Bram mentions that travelling at night in the south is probably not a good idea because he's seen groups of dark creatures with eight red eyes wandering the area at night, similarly he has heard creepy voices which he thinks are the ghosts of ancient dwarves inhabiting the ruins, though Oski says that its just his imagination.

Making a jolly cheer together, the pixies take their positions too in the marching order suggested, and Bram takes the lead in pointing towards the south following the edge of the Yitri grove woods.

You spend much of the day flying from tree to tree, enjoying the sight of the vast fields of chrysanthemum beside the trees you skirt in your travel. Eventually as the sun begins to set, your party discovers at the base of the tree you are on, a nest of many small centipedes feeding on numerous worms burrowing near the edge of the chrysanthemum fields. There appears to be a strange get of moist vapour coming out from this nest at regular intervals.

Further towards the south-west, you catch sight of the distant lights of what you know as the Thekchen Plantation where humans growing large fields of opium live.

"Should we rest for today, or press on?" Bram asks.

"I don't know about that, those centipedes down there, you sure they won't climb up and eat us while we're asleep?" Dridi mutters.

"Don't worry Dridi, you don't have much meat on you, they'll just think you're a twig!" Oski teases as Dridi pinches her playfully causig her to laugh

"Or perhaps we should go on further to the humans' plantation? No doubt it will be safer there. They cannot see us," Runa remarks.

Oski then whips out her shovel and begins digging out the object. After a few minutes of digging, it is revealed to the party that it is some strange metallic orb the size of pixie's head from which fog perpetually billows out of. The fog feels like raw moisture which condenses easily on your skin leaving it slightly wet.

"Not sure how this is useful, but certainly a strange thing I must say!" Dridi speaks.

0003 - Sughd, Yitri Chrysanthemum Grove (Day 1)

In reply to Myll (msg # 48):

Thankfully, unlike what Dridi or Runa expected, the night was rather peaceful. The only thing that seemed to be slightly of a threat stayed a safe distance down from the top of the tree you slept in. It appears that there was a solitary wandering grouse, which might have fed on you if you had slept on the forest floor.

Waking at dawn, you set off again following Bram's lead towards your destination to the barren rocky lands where the rhino beetles were thought to have moved to. (It is now Day 2)

You travel for a few hours, before you hear the loud voices of humans. There is a lot of laughing and gleeful voices followed by the sounds of the rustling of leaves - likely the sound of footsteps upon fallen leaves on the forest floor.

In the distance you see planly dressed small children - 3 in number - wielding large bug nets and a large wicker basket slung around their shoulders. Some of them are bent over towards the ground digging in the dirt with small spades, while others are looking at the trunks of trees, occasionally slapping their nets against those trunks.

After a few moments you notice one exclaim, "Hey! Look I caught a big one!"

With a large toothy grin, a girl with a ponytail retrieves a large fist-sized rhino beetle from her net and shows it off to the other two children who exclaim in excitement and glee.

"Thats astounding! I want to catch one too!"

"Where did you find it? Where did you find it?"

The children chatter as the ponytailed girl shows off her catch smugly.

"Looks like we are nearing our destination...." Runa remarks at the scene.

Soon in the distance you see a strange circle of dried up trees at the center of which stands a tall pole-like rock weathered by wind and rain.
And to your surprise, you hear a single hissing squeak of a Rhino beetle, which appears to be coming from the ground.

Reflecting the reddening evening sun is the glossy chitinous back of a giant rhino beetle, which appears to be surrounded by three large vinegaroons. The giant rhino beetle is still very much larger but appears to be quite weakened.

"There it is! Looks like they really went in this direction!"

As you have seen the Rhino beetles ridden by pixies before, you have come to expect them to fly at least twice the speed as pixies. But strangely, it appears that the beetle is moving at a slower and steadier pace as though it were flying about leisurely. You can just about keep up to it without exhausting yourselves too much.

After flying past a few sparse ruins of thoroughly worn columns, you eventually arrive at a strange open entrance that leads into a dimly lit corridor.

From deep inside the corridor you hear the faint sounds of hissing squeaks, in consecutive and rapid rhythms as though there are numerous Rhino Beetles giving off those sounds.

The same Rhino beetle that you follow seems to fly into the dimly lit corridor...

"Eeek... I remember this place... Its where I saw that eight eyed ghost..." Bram says while shivering.

"Man up Bram! It was just your imagination!" Oski slaps him on the back.

Following the beetle deeper into the corridor, you begin to notice the engraved walls are fitted with small alcoves bearing strange plant-like candles that dimly light up the area with a strange red hue. The air smells stuffy and concentrated with an odd intoxicating scent.

After a few moments, of following you notice on the ground a robed skeleton whose skeletal arm rests on a small booklet. The Rhino beetle lands on a nearby wall and rests, as the pixies look at the skeleton. You notice that the sounds of hissing squeaks seem to grow louder and more rapid from deeper inside the corridor.

"That doesn't look like a good sign...." Runa mutters.

As you reach the entrance again, you notice that the sky has turned dark, but thankfully the skies are clear and the moon rising from the horizon appears quite large and bright, and the moonlight illuminates much of the area you stand in.

The booklet appears to be indeed some kind of journal, bound in leather and it is fashioned in a way that protects much of its pages from getting damaged.

Peering inside, you find that it is rather dark. The streaks of light from outside only illuminate a part of the dusty masonry flooring and engraved walls. Looking deeper reveals only pitch black darkness.

As you light your torch and proceed further with the rest of the party, you find that the tunnel goes on further and further, and seems to be rather quiet.

After about a minute of heading deeper, you eventually come to another large stone door which is kept ever so slightly ajar. A faint streak of bluish light escapes from slightly opened gap of the stone door.

In reply to Myll (msg # 84):

Indeed, the opening is more than enough, and can probably fit the size of your body and allows room for even more.

You peek into the room ahead past the ajar door.

Beyond the door is a large circular room with a domed ceiling, with rhino beetles positioned along almost every inch of the wall, their glossy backs reflecting light from the centre of the room giving the appearance of terrifying eyes of black sclera with pupils of blue staring at you.

Even the floor is covered with rhino beetles, with some appearing to be dead - their feet pointing up in the air.

At the centre of the room appears to be a crumbling throne of some sort, and seated on it seems to be a small Tiger-Beetle man, just slightly larger than two pixies standing on top of each other.

The Tiger Beetle man appears to be asleep, and carries in one of its thin stick like arms a strange staff made of wood with a fragment of bluish amber held by gnarly branches emerging from the top of the staff.

The room is awfully quiet, and it appears that there are more rhino beetles in this room than you've ever seen in Tylfi's ranch.

Dridi stays back to keep a look out, clearly terrified by this bizarre sight of almost a hundred over rhino beetles inside this room.

The room is completely silent, and you can literally hear your own heartbeat accompanying the sounds of your rapid wing fluttering as you hover with the other 3 pixies to carry out your plan.

You first tie the Tiger Beetle Man on his throne, and extend the long rope further, tying his hands together.

Meanwhile, Oski and Bram try to pry the staff from the Tiger Beetle Man's grip, but they both struggle.

"This fellow's grip is really strong...! Is he really asleep...?" Bram Whispers.

"Need some help here...!" Oski whispers.

As Runa finishes tying the knot of the bind with your help, she also goes to help the two pixies, and all three pixies appear to struggle.

The answer to your question is soon answered, as the ride continues and everyone latches onto the staff as it continues to hurtle forward ocassionally striking and snapping some of the protruding branches of smaller trees.

As the vegetation around you grows thicker after a while of travelling, you notice the sky becoming darker as night falls - with only a little of your vision lit up by the waxing gibbous moon above.

Though fortunately, the Rhino beetles seem undeterred by the change in time of day, and continue hurtling forward.

"Nor... normally it takes around one and a half days to to get there on Rhino beetle... but seeing how they're flying forwards without stopping to rest... maybe it will take slightly shorter!?" Bram shouts as the wind causes his slightly chubby face to ripple.

As it appears that it is quite late at night and everyone is very much asleep, you decide to rest for the day before heading to collect your rewards. (It is now Day 4)

At centre of the treehomes early the next day, Bram, Oski, Dridi and Runa soon meet with you and you decide to go together to find Herbalist Selly.

As she is the one whom most people go to to find remedies for their various ailments, you quickly manage to navigate your way to her home and medicine hall which is the tree covered in bluish moss on which a large sign bearing her name is placed. Inside is a rather dry aired room with a very tall medicine shelf and a counter on which various scales, weights, and paper to wrap medicines with can be seen. The air in here smells of oddly sweet and bitter herbs.

There, upon giving her the letter written by the Grove Elder, she speaks.

"Ah...! So you were the ones who brough Tylfi's beetles back! Of course! I am more than willing to part with a few useful draughts - perhaps some Carrot Moss Juice and Moongrass poultices might suffice...? If there is anything else that you might be interested in, I will also be willing to share!"

She brings to the table 10 small crystal phials of bright orange liquid, and 10 faintly glowing poutlices to the counter.

It should be able to completely recover any of such wounds in 1 hour at most, after which it should be removed, and replaced with another if not completely healed," Herbalist Selly explains as she points to a small cut on the edge of the poultice which is probably where the healing ingredients inside would be exposed and placed upon wounds.

"I hope my explanation was easy enough to understand...?"

She gives everyone a poultice and vial each. "I suppose I will hold on to the rest for now, and provide it when anyone needs more..."

Before you prepare to go, you hear herbalist Selly speak.

"By the way... if you are not currently in a hurry somewhere, would you mind if you help me with a small errand...? I will provide some renumeration for it of course... Seeing how you've managed to travel quite a distance to bring back Tylfi's beetles... I was wondering if you could take a trip of some distance for me... there are some herbs that was ordered from me, but I am much... uh... too busy to deliver them personally..." she looks away awkwardly to the left for a moment as she speaks the last sentence.

The next person closest to the Herbalists is Quartermaster Matis who makes various equipment inside the large ironwood tree to the east of the grove.
Inside you can smell the scent of faintly burnt wood as the many Ironwood workers temper the metal-like wood to make a wide variety of tools and equipment - from hooks and chains, to pauldrons and blades.

At the counter near the storage room lies, you find the topknotted Matis in an apron looking through the ledger.
After reading your letter, he says the following,

"Ah, good thing that the Rhinos are back, means we can get back to transporting more of them ironwood back here. Really appreciate what you've done!

"I can offer you vests of ironwood chainmail, and one of any weapon you wish to have. I imagine with the Rhinos back it would be useful to get a good old lance - they work really well with the beetles and many riders have taken down swathes of Aphid men.

"And if good old fighting close up isn't your thing, then I suppose I can also offer a bow and a set of 40 arrows instead of a weapon,

"Also if you need other stuffs made of ironwood, like a tankard, a length of chain or something else, I will try my best to offer them within reason of course."

Assuming that you have nothing more to ask of from Matis, you will head to Sage Fibi's hermitage.

As Sage Fibi's hermitage is quite a distance from the Treehomes, you begin to move southwards towards the Flaky Tree.

During your travel there, you can't help but notice that there are quite a lot of Birds flying near the treetops, and it seems that some of them seem to be staring at you and the party suspiciously.

"Hey... is it me or are those birds constantly looking over at us...?" Bram mutters as you continue forwards.

The birds are are quite large, and are easily twice the size of a pixie. Though you have heard of some instances where larger birds like Ospreys having eaten some pixies, you seem to recall that the Yellow Jays in the forest have never preyed of pixies as far as you can recall.

Somehow, the tension from the earlier encounter seemed to lessen.

As you hurriedly turn your backs to return to the Treehomes, the birds surprisingly no longer seem to gather at the treetops closer to the treehomes.

Early next day (Day 5), you go to Yurt's, explaining to him the case of the Mugwort Wine to be delivered to Sage Fibi.

While you are there you hear from the patrons of the brewery's small tavern that there seems to be an odd rise in the number of Yellow Jays around the treehomes. And much to the fortune of the Treehome Guard, many of these Jays have thankfully dispatched many of the Aphid men at the frontier borders of the Treehomes.

Your companions pause for a moment as they look towards a window from which you can clearly see the bright rays of the morning sun shining through.

Oski bursts into laughter as Bram speaks, "what are you talking about Myll? Its early in the morning right now - we have plenty of time to reach there. We'll most likely arrive by midday!"

Cheerfully, the five of you make your way to the Flaky tree, taking the route you took previously.

Much like before, you notice that there are quite a number of Yellow Jays on the Trees - but they seem to not really be eyeing you as much.

After a few hours of flying, you eventually come to a tall, large tree with dull beige bark. At the bottom of the tree you clearly see flakes of old bark covering the floor like piles of snow - which is likely the reason why this treehome of Sage Fibi was called as such. The door at a tree hollow appears to be tightly closed shut.

As you approach the tree - you notice a great deal of sound coming from the top of the Flaky tree! Perched in rows, chirping away loudly are a large number of Yellow Jays in a cacophonous chorus of chirping, which is exceedingly noisy...!

Bram too flashes a mischievous grin to you. Imitating you, the rest of the pixies too playfully add to the noise, shouting in strange voices "MASTER FIBI OPEN UP!!" in unison with whatever arcane rhythm the Yellow Jays are chirping at.

After a few seconds of further cacophony, the cantankerous caterwauling by all the creatures around the flaky tree is abruptly punctuated by a booming voice - so loud, that new flakes of the flaky tree begin to fall from above onto you. The Yellow Jays perched atop too, all scatter - clearly surprised by the sudden explosion of sound...!

"WILL ALL OF YOU SHUT UP ALREADY!!! I'M TRYING TO CONCENTRATE HERE...!!!"

In conjunction with the booming voice, you notice the door to the Flaky Treehome burst open to its fullest extent, rattling vigorously with every syllable enunciated by the voice.

As you look to the source of the voice, you notice a large mouth on the flaky tree has appeared with lips bearing the texture of the flaky tree's bark shaped in clearly stiff lipped frown.

The lips remain on the tree for a few moments before melding back into the tree as the vicinity plunges into silence - with not even the cries of insects present.

Everyone looks towards you with a rather embarrassed expression.

The interior of the flaky tree is quite dark occasionally lit by faint azure glowing potted mushrooms.

Each floor seems to be messily furnished with old furniture upon which all sorts of pots, flasks, sacks, sculptures - seemingly random paraphernalia sometimes stacked up in very tall mounds.

It seems that Sage Fibi is quite the hoarder.

As you fly along the spiral staircase, you eventually reach a more brightly lit floor at which you see numerous lecterns with open books upon them, and in the sea of lecterns with opened up books, there seems to be a large red couch upon which the dishevelled Sage Fibi dressed in a dark red robe, with his spiky grayish hair worn above his scowling face, squats. He seems to be smoking from some sort of pipe while looking at a book on the floor, occasionally waving his hand, causing the book's page to turn.

"My other materials are at the first floor, just use them as you wish."

According to the scroll, the Wand of Darkvision requires:
- A hollow stick as thick as two fingers
- A clump of Mothmoss
- Crushed Dogsberry
- A Flintgem fragment

The ingredients are to be inserted into the hollow part of the stick and sealed with magical wax (found at the first floor of Fibi's Flaky Tree)

Based on your looking through Fibi's storage, it seems that there is no sign of any Flintgem fragments. Based on your knowledge, Mothmoss are found at trees where moths lives, Dogsberry can be found in bushes in the Yitri grove. While Flintgems are sometimes found in brooks.

Apparently other than a recipe for a Wand of Darkvision, there seems to be a recipe for the Wand of Bubbles, Wand of Grass Trimming, and Wand of Stench Erasing.

In reply to Myll (msg # 162):

You head towards Herbalist Selly's shop - and by the time you arrive, it is near sunset.

Inside her shop, you see her sorting a few of the herbs that were just gathered by her staff into various shelves built around the core of her treehome.

Noticing your arrival she greets you and soon provides you information about the task she wanted you to complete.

"Actually, you won't have to ccollect any of the herbs, as I already have them. The issue mainly is that Sage Patpa whom I have to deliver these herbs to lives rather far towards the west, which is rather dangerous for me to send my inexperienced boys to."

"I couldn't deliver them either as Master Tylfi's Rhino beetles were missing. But now the problem is solved by all of you, I think that you will be the best for this job! But do be careful. Sage Patpa likes to live near the territory of the Aphid Men, but considering how the Yellow Jays have been dispatching a large number of them, I think now is the opportunity to make this delivery."

Selly brings you to her depot where you see around 20 huge sacks of herbs that give off thick, bitter aromas. The sacks seem to be made out of shedded snakeskin and looks quite high quality - probably used to prevent leaching of water and other environmental damage.

"You should borrow a few Rhino Beetles from Tylfi tomorrow morning and get them to haul these herbs. No doubt Sage Patpa will reward you, and I will also share more of my remedies with you when you return!"

While explaining about the task, Selly hands you a rough map detailing the location of Sage Patpa's Stony Tree. Froom the looks of it, it is indeed quite far away and would take almost a week on Rhino beetle to get there.

0003 - Sughd, Yitri Chrysanthemum Grove (Day 1)

In reply to Myll (msg # 164):

After resting for the rest of the day, you eventually find yourself early next morning with the Rhino beetles prepared and saddled, with the sacks of herbs loaded up won the backs of the Rhino Beetles.

You also see your fellow companions loading up more luggage - filled with various supplies and tools. It is going to be quite a long journey after all. Almost half a week to get to the Stony Tree and back! Based on a quick tally of supplies, you have enough rations to last for 3 weeks, preparing in the case of unexpected events.

"Hmmm... should we hire more to come along with us?" Bram suggests while preparations are being made to set off for the Stony Tree.

0003 - Sughd, Yitri Chrysanthemum Grove (Day 1)

In reply to Myll (msg # 166):

Based on what you've observed in the Grove, you've seen a few regiments of hunter pixies headed to the frontiers to hold the line against the Aphid-men, to cease incursions into the Chrysanthemum grove.

Just as you are finishing packing, you notice a number of hunters numbering around 10 too packing rhino beetles with rations. Noticing your presence what you recognize to be the captain of the hunters - Cinth approaches you.

"Could it be you are too setting off towards the Aphid Dam? I'd wager that is the case considering the amount of supplies you have packed!" Cinth greets you with his confident powerful voice.

Captain Cinths enquiry is welcomed by lessening Myll's concerns about heading into potentially hazardous location. Indeed we are headed towards Sage Patpa's who lives near the Aphid men's territory. Would it be possible for us to accompany your hunting group? asks Myll glancing at her companions hoping they approve her enquiry.

0003 - Sughd, Yitri Chrysanthemum Grove (Day 1)

In reply to Myll (msg # 168):

Your companions look quite pleased to accept this proposition as they no doubt understand that it would truly be helpful to have a well armed troop of hunters accompany them on this long journey.

After a few introductions and pleasantries, the party soon sets off towards the west.

The first day of the journey ends with an encounter with humans. While travelling, the party discovers what appears to be a Garnet Mine where a few humans seem to be working to extract garnet from a cave along a cliff face. But as the party has a clear destination in mind, they remains hidden, staying a small distance from them to take advantage of the safety afforded by these large creatures.

But it is on the second day where you encounter large creatures that would not listen to reason. As night falls on the second day, one of the hunters spots a group of 12 humanoids approaching the small camp of pixies. As they approached it was discovered that they were actually the risen dead - known as bgegs ro-langs!

They approach in a strange stiff manner, waggling their half rotten tongues emerging from their hardened cracked bodies wearing what appears to be rather fancy robes... Their eyes appear to be rotting, and somehow they are able to sense the presence of the pixies!

In reply to Myll (msg # 170):

"We have pots of oil, we never employed that strategy before, but you can try - if you know how to!" a pixie Minique the leader of the hunters' archers say as they point towards some of the small pots near the campsite.

In the meantime, Cinth orders 5 pixies armed with lances to form a line in front of the party while riding a few of the unloaded Rhino beetles, while Minique orders his 5 pixie archers to fire a volley at the approaching ro-langs.

The volley showers upon the ro-langs, managing to subdue 2 of them causing them to fall to the ground motionless!

There is still some distance between the slow ro-langs and the campsite and Cinth is likely waiting for the opportunity for the archers to do more damage before sending in his Rhino Beetle lancers to sweep through them.

"I heard these creatures will turn you into one of them should they manage to lick you... try to avoid touching them if you can...!" Cinth warns as he observes the battle seriously.

In reply to Myll (msg # 172):
Unfortunately, as the pot is meant for pixie use, you only manage to douse 2 of the ro-langs effectively.

Quickly setting arrows alight by dipping an arrow in another pot of oil and lighting it with a torch, the 5 archers fire a volley of arrows, managing this time to strike 3 ro-langs! The volley manages to slay two of them, setting one on fire, and wound another!

As the dying ro-lang set on fire is somewhere in the front, it falls and a ro-lang behind steps on it, causing it to burn from the flames and collapse into a flaming heap!

With the ro-langs now about to reach the front line, Cinth orders the Rhino lancers to charge in two diagonal columns avoiding the burning heap and striking the advancing ro-langs in a swift joust! The Rhino lances decapitate the heads of 3 ro-langs in the process, charging further ahead up in the air near you to get out of their reach!

Only two ro-langs approach, and make their attacks on the Bram and the rest of the companions who rush to defend the archers!

One of the ro-langs manage to land a hit injuring one of the archers, while another lands both hits, licking a pixie archer in the process!

You can only stare in horror as you see the pixie archer shudder and suddenly a greenish glow emerges from his eyes!!

You hear an angry yell as you notice Runa chopping down at the Ro-lang nearby with her large dagger - by only manages to slightly scratch it!

Dridi too attacks and chops at the same Ro-lang, slaying it!

But you notice everyone flee at the sight of their companion having turned into a strange undead horror!

But with a solemn face, Cinth himself charges towards the pixie turned Ro-lang, and beheads it before it manages to lick anyone else with its infernal tongue.

In the meantime, the Rhino lancers charge towards the last two Ro-langs approaching, dispatching them before returning to the camp where everyone stands some distance from their fellow fallen pixie archer with sombre expressions.

"Let's hope this is the last of these terrible creatures... We should probably make haste to the Aphid Dam early in dawn tomorrow..." Cinth says as the other pixies begin to dig a grave for their fallen comrade.

0003 - Sughd, Yitri Chrysanthemum Grove (Day 1)

In reply to Myll (msg # 168):

The rest of 2 days of the trip to the Aphid Dam were quiet, but thankfully uneventful.

It seems that it was truly bad luck that had led to the previous encounter with those infernal ro-langs.

As the terrain of the surround area gradually turns more rocky with vegetation being less frequent, you eventually come to the sight of a rather large dam-like construction made of stony textured trunks of wood in the middle of what appears to be a ravine.

Beyond the ravine ahead by some distance appears to be strange wax-like mounds that pierce the deep blue sky.

Towards the east you can just barely make out the foggy silhouette of a gnarly tree growing along a cliff beyond which are those wax-like mounds as well.

Around this dam along the walls of the ravines appear to be a number of cave openings, and you occasionally see the armored pixie patrolling the area.

Cinth leads you and his men towards a cave where you see a number of rhino beetles being stabled as well.

"Well, here we are. Feel free to rest in the barracks if you wish, they're at the caves near to the dam itself. We're quite short of fellows over here, so most of the bunks are empty."

"As for the Sage Patpa's tree, you can find it at the cliff towards the east. You should have seen it while we were approaching the Dam."

"It should take around a quarter of a day to reach the tree. As you'd expect from the Aphid Dam, you might find a lot of aphids on your way there, but it seems that the birds have been pecking at them recently and you might be lucky to not encounter many this time," the Guards advise you as they give a faint smile.

"I guess we owe it to the Yellow Jays that we've held out until Captain Cinth arrived..!"

"Uh... Myll, we were supposed to deliver stuff to Sage Patpa, right?" Bram says as you arrive at the tall stony tree.

"Could it be you thought that the tree was a Sage tree? Well you're not wrong but its not that kind of Sage! Its more like the Sage Fibi kind of Sage!!" Oski laughs.

Unlike Sage Fibi's tree, Sage Patpa's tree is considerably taller and seems to be very vertical and parallel on all sides, as though it had been meticulously crafted.

Around the trees are numerous toad-sized stumpy trees wrapped with white rope and as you cross them you feel at ease as though you had returned to the treehomes.

Near the bottom of the tree, you find a small stable made of grown wood at which a rather strange beetle with iridscent chitin rests.

As you haul your delivery to the stable, you eventually see the rather tall door to the stony tree open and see a toad-faced pixie dressed in rather fine robes appear.

"Welcome, visitors. Ah you must be here to deliver to Sage Patpa?" the pixie greets you.
