So we've got 2 people who want to look around first, and 2 people wanting to check a sarcophagi first. I need a decision on one or the other, or I need confirmation that you want to split the party to do both.

I know what Akyra wants to do, but not which direction she wants to go when she climbs out, so I'm going to give her a chance to post before I make an update.

What I will tell you, is that all three of the attacks this turn hit, and all three of them seem to be less effective than they should be. Having seen one creature with resistance before, you realize this creature has resistance (takes half damage) to all three damage types you've used on it so far (fire, piercing, slashing). It is still taking damage, and the damage is not insignificant, it's just more durable than a tiny ball would seem to be.

My dog got sprayed by a skunk tonight. I didn't realize it had happened, I just knew she had barked at something after I let her out. When she came in, she dove into the carpet to wipe it off, then jumped up onto the couch to wipe it off there too. Now my entire house smells absolutely horrendous, and the smell is a trigger for both my wife's post-covid condition and my own, so the smell is amplified. I may be going to a hotel tonight if I can't get through it, but I get to spend tomorrow trying to deskunk my house. We're going through every home remedy Google has to offer right now, to do what we can tonight, but relief can't come soon enough.

The tunnel is only 5 ft wide. You can move through ally squares without any penalty, you just can't end in the same square. So far we're 2:2 on triggering traps and then fighting right where we were, making it hard for everyone to fight the way they'd like. There are options there, but I'd personally lean toward getting everyone involved rather than leaving some straggling.

Yeah that light kills ;-)

Bonthot, mind sliver is a Int saving throw, you don't roll that one, Psynister does. What you have to give him is your spell DC (8 + proficiency bonus + ability bonus + any item bonus, most likely 13 now) the damage roll (1d6) and the next save reduction (1d4) for him to calculate if the critter fails his saving throw

Pavel and Akyra, I need an OA from each of you, at advantage. Pavel's would be triggered first, so if he can land a hit and deal enough damage, he can potentially kill W1. Akyra can either kill or finish it off, if not.

Whether or not you kill it will effect one other action this round. I'm going to give you two a few hours to post the OA yourselves, otherwise I will roll it on your behalf in order to not hold things up, and well just move on to round 3.

Spoiler alert: W1 dies this round either way, it's just a matter of who gets the killing blow.

Who is going to take the sword?

Pavel and Akyra are the two best suited to wielding it.

It is a +1 Longsword that deals an extra 3d6 damage to actual dragons (not dragonborn). There's one dragon in this adventure, so for the most part it's just a +1 sword until you face the white dragon.

I've only been working with au pairs for about 9 months, but with travel bans in place the whole time I've only had to welcome one every couple of months, and now I've got six more all at once, and some don't understand English very well so they're asking each other questions because they didn't understand me, and now there's all kinds of misinformation out there. It's a mess.

I've dealt with 27 high school exchange students arriving at the same time and had fewer issues and less of my time taken up than I do with these 6 college girls.

It's been 3 weeks since I last heard from Pavel, so we may be down a ranger as well. If he doesn't come back soon, I'll go ahead and remove him and BonThot both and then find 1-2 replacements. If he does come back, I think we'll just push on with the group as-is.

I know things are slow right now with the holidays, and I got sick just before Christmas which also kept me down. I finally got my test results back this week, and I'm glad it's not Covid again.

How do you all feel about bringing in replacement players? I've got one person who has already applied, and I know we've got more who could step in from the other games that I share with Akyra/Khorth. I don't have any worries about being able to find more players, the question is whether or not you want more characters to be in the story. There is a good place coming up to introduce people mid-dungeon, if we're going to do it. There are things I like about small groups, and things I like about large groups, so I'm fine either way.

I have a work conference coming up in the 2nd week of January, the first I've been involved in with this company, so I don't know yet whether my evenings are going to be free for posting, or if my boss and coworkers are going to try to rope me into other activities in the evening, so that week might be really quiet, or I may have all kinds of free time. I won't know until I get there.

Those of you with spells or other limited use abilities, make sure you're tracking those on your character sheets so that you and I both know what you have available. I do sometimes scale the encounters up or down a bit, or move a monster or two from one encounter to another, based on your resources, so keeping those updated is part of keeping your character alive as much as it is keeping things in balance.

Some information about the dreams, since questions have come up.

There is one thing that the dream directs you toward for the immediate very near future, and it is tied to the storm.

Of the other information that you received in the dreams, timing is different for each of you. One of you got flashes of the past, another of the present, and another of the future. In addition to the immediate thing I mentioned above.

A lot of what I put in the dreams is foreshadowing of things you are likely to experience (and some things you may not), but some of that foreshadowing is intentionally very vague.

You are free to ask clarifying questions. If it's something I didn't explain very well, I'll clear it up. If it's something I meant to be vague, I'll give you a non-answer or one that steers your thinking a different direction (which may also be vague).

If I need to drop from the game, I understandably will, but hopefully I can find my work/life/rpol equilibrium very soon.

Re: OOC: Umberage Hill

Thanks. If any of you could read it, then all of you should be able to. It's a feature of the language groups that I think I new about, way back when they first implemented them, but then never really used it and ended up forgetting about it all together.

Known words, like names of people or places, you can put in curly brackets in a language line and it will keep those words the same instead of translating them to gibberish.

Disadvantage is gone now that the storm has blown through. You can't see him right this second, but you know where he is and one move action gets you to where you can see him.

Sakamoto certainly can't catch up with him, though I could move and dash and still get a range attack once I got in range, I think...

Still, it's a stretch for the halfling to catch up to him. Plus, a couple of near-death experiences have wiped the little guy out!

Ariadne, what all do you want to accomplish?

Every square on the map that isn't light green is Difficult Terrain, taking twice as much movement. So if you want to move closer to the darkness and cast a spell, you can do that, but you'll be 15-20 feet away from the darkness.

If you want to move right up against the darkness, then you would have to Move and Dash, which would put you right next to it but you would have no action left to do anything else.

Twice, bro. Twice. Another five feet, and you'd have had him!

For future iterations of this battle, I think I'm going to hold off on the difficult terrain bit until after the 10th round or so. The bad rolls let the minions last too long, giving the necro too much time to get to a position that favored him much more than all of you. Especially with so many melee people.

It's good practice for what's to come, though.

I'll be taking away the darkness on his next turn if you don't break concentration on it before then.

It's given you a taste of what's to come later, and that should suffice. This will not be the last time you fight an enemy you cannot see, but it will be the last time it's due to the Darkness spell.

All of the boss fights here are meant to be difficult, but the dice have made this one especially brutal. Still, there are a number of things I will change about this encounter when I run it again. The storm's actions, the skeletal soldier's...everything, and removing Darkness from the necromancer's spell list to start.

As I've said before, the enemies in this game will fight intelligently, which will sometimes include killing players rather than leaving them unconscious. I've reached out to Sakamoto to see how he wishes to continue. It should be obvious at this point, but just in case it's not, don't hold anything back on this fight.

Feel free to discuss. Do you want me to roll his save, or let one of you tempt fate by rolling it for him instead?

The dice roller has loved him more than you this fight, but will you rolling his saving throw be the one roll where your luck finally changes?

I don't like either option. I haven't really rolled anything above an 8 for the last....I don't know how many rounds (other than a random 10 and a a random 17 I think during the disadvantage rounds) but like you said...if I rolled it now would be the time I roll high. I also don't like how well the die roller has been rolling for you either though. THERE IS NO GOOD OPTION!

Under the message window when you post, there's a dropdown for "Insert a private line:" Once I add you to your language groups, you'll see options there for each language that you speak down at the bottom of that list. The DM assigns you to your groups, but once you use it the people who are also in that group will see what you actually write and everyone else will see (somewhat readable) gibberish.

Yeah, I think most of you still have the majority of the gold you've received throughout the adventure. The initial payment for coming here to start with, loot from Cragmaw Castle, payment from the Druid, loot from the Thayan's hideout.

You've definitely got the 100g you need to make up the difference.

I've liquidated the gear that you collected from the Thayan armory and from Pavel/BonThot's inventory, which more than covers the extra 100g for Sakamoto's resurrection.

I've also cleaned up the Item Rewards thread. In doing so, I also found some items that had been claimed by people but never added to their character sheets, so that has been addressed as well.

The items that the clutch sisters have are things that were planned to plug holes in the current party. We have a battle druid and a war cleric, but no healer, for example.

The necromancer's items were purely things that fit him, and all things that he used against you, so they were there because he would have them and use them. Their reward had no one specific in mind at all.

Only two of the items in this batch are designed for specific characters, and both are fairly obvious - the gloves for Sakamoto, and the bow for Ariadne (a hunter by trade, but playing a class w/o proficiency). Others have received custom enhancements to class features or spells, or will receive such soon.

For the three new players, I generally build custom items myself to fit your characters, once I get to know them and see what you've built them to do. Our first round of magic items were custom, this is round 2 and is more generic. Round 3 will be back to custom.

OOC: Umberage Hill

I am so sorry for my absences. I typically only post big messages from my competitors and I just haven't been at my computer much. Things might change in a couple weeks, and I hope to resume semi-regular posting, but I'm sorry that I've not been able to. I work 10 hour days now so when I get home, it's dinner, relax a bit, then go to bed.

Mea culpa, everyone!

I was hoping to get a post out last night, but I was told my niece's graduation was rescheduled from Monday (because someone thought it was a great idea to have graduation on Memorial Day), to today (Thursday). The family nominated me for all tech-related projects several years ago, and that means I get to make video compilations of pictures and video clips for such special occasions. I thought I had the weekend to work on it and drive up there, but instead I got to spend 9 hours on it tonight, now I get to wait for it to render, and once that's done I get to start the process of uploading it to YouTube, get a few hours of sleep, drive 400 miles, and have everything magically appear perfect at the party in 12 hours.

Compared to last time, with a 27-hour drive to California for "Surprise! We're getting married on Saturday! In California!", this is nothing. But, it does mean I've not had any time or attention to direct your way. I might have time after the party tomorrow to post, or it might have to wait until late Friday evening. I'll be with family, so there's always a chance I'll get volunteered for things I have no desire to do, taking up all of my free time, in which case it will be Saturday evening when I get back home.

Re: OOC: Umberage Hill

From the PHB

quote:
Grappling

When you want to grab a creature or wrestle with it, you can use the Attack action to make a special melee attack, a grapple. If you’re able to make multiple attacks with the Attack action, this attack replaces one of them.

The target of your grapple must be no more than one size larger than you and must be within your reach. Using at least one free hand, you try to seize the target by making a grapple check instead of an attack roll: a Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target’s Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (the target chooses the ability to use). You succeed automatically if the target is incapacitated. If you succeed, you subject the target to the grappled condition. The condition specifies the things that end it, and you can release the target whenever you like (no action required).

Escaping a Grapple. A grappled creature can use its action to escape. To do so, it must succeed on a Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check contested by your Strength (Athletics) check.

Moving a Grappled Creature. When you move, you can drag or carry the grappled creature with you, but your speed is halved, unless the creature is two or more sizes smaller than you.

Which basically means that you have advantage on your athletic check since you are raging, and that the boar can't move at all, it's speed is 0, as it is grappled. It can still attack, but then stays grappled, it needs to use its action to try to escape you.

quote:
Grappled

A grappled creature’s speed becomes 0, and it can’t benefit from any bonus to its speed.
The condition ends if the grappler is incapacitated (see the condition).
The condition also ends if an effect removes the grappled creature from the reach of the grappler or grappling effect, such as when a creature is hurled away by the thunderwave spell.

Thoughts?

You can attack it, but you don't have advantage because nothing is granting you advantage. The only thing a grapple does is reduce the creature's speed to 0, so it can't move from where it is without spending an action to break the grapple.

You can only pin it to the ground if you have the Grappler feat, which is also how you would grant advantage on attack rolls against it. You could try to trip it to give people advantage, but creatures with more than 2 legs get a pretty hefty bonus against being tripped.

The rules that give a thing disadvantage when attacking someone else are tied to other Barbarian Subclasses. Taking the Dodge action can give him disadvantage on attacks against you, but I would allow you to essentially dodge for someone else. It wouldn't affect all allies, but if you wanted to try to protect Khorth this turn, for example, I would let you take the Dodge action on behalf of Khorth as you try to incentivize him to attack only you.

He does get advantage to keep the grapple, as it's an athletic check, and his strength skills checks get advantage while raging. That's how I read it anyway.

Theatrically, you could do it, but mechanically, you cannot. Since you can't actually do it, you would get no bonuses or benefits at all. It would sound cool when you wrote it, though?

Oh!  well shit.  that means I lose my grapple.

Oh it seems I do get Advantage on my Grapple checks since I'm enlarged.

Enlarge. The target's size doubles in all dimensions, and its weight is multiplied by eight. This growth increases its size by one category-- from Medium to Large, for example. If there isn't enough room for the target to double its size, the creature or object attains the maximum possible size in the space available. Until the spell ends, the target also has advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws. The target's weapons also grow to match its new size. While these weapons are enlarged, the target's attacks with them deal 1d4 extra damage.

No, once a grapple has been established, it stays in effect until someone breaks it, a forced movement effect is used, or you decide to let go. It takes an Action for the person being grappled to try to break out of it, but if no one tries to break it then it just stays in effect.

You've got more than enough time on Rage. There's no way it runs out before combat is over.

He is grappling the last one. No special rules apply since it's only a grapple, it just means the orc can't move without spending an action and beating Brillik's roll.

Re: OOC: Umberage Hill

Hey all. So, I've been thinking about this for a while and it's been a tough decision to reach, but I think I'm going to have to drop out of the game. I just simply don't have the time to fully (or even partly) dedicate to RPOL like I used to. Work has been considerably busier, when I'm on break or lunch I do things away from my desk, and when I'm off work (I work a 10 hour day), I don't want to spend any more time at my computer, and on my days off, I just tend to be super busy or otherwise distracted by other things.

You all have been great fun to roleplay with all of you, I TRULY mean that. Some of my favorite roleplaying experiences have been with you all, and I can honestly say, many of the scenes surrounding Sakamoto's death genuinely brought tears to my eyes. I'll miss all of you deeply!

Good luck to you all!

OOC: Umberage Hill

Most of you I'm in constant contact with on Discord, but for those that aren't, let me apologize for the slowness.

In addition to my normal job, I volunteer for a foreign au pair program. Normally, neither one of those impact my free time all that much. My work usually ends at 6, and the au pair stuff usually takes about 2 hours worth of phone calls and text conversations in a given month, freeing up the rest of my time for RPOL. Au pair stuff started going nuts in May/June, and then work exploded in June/July when they put me in charge of a forgotten project that hasn't been touched by a developer in six years, that they now realize has cast the company tens of millions of dollars worth of services we sold/provided but never charged anyone for.

So now I'm doing my development work during my normal 9-6 shift, then meeting, training, or coordinating with the Korean development team for 1-8 hours after my normal shift, every day. I can handle it, it both is and isn't as bad as it sounds, but it's a lot of work, a lot of stress/expectations, and a lot of extra hours. Some days I straight up don't have the hours in the day for posting, and sometimes I have the time but I just don't have the mental oomph or creative energy left to make a post that doesn't just...suck.

I've been active on this site for over 20 years. I'm not going anywhere, and I'm not shutting the game down. I just want to make sure everyone knows the situation so that you're not left wondering about what's going on. I've always been big on having a daily posting schedule. As others here can attest, my normal mode of operation is to be playing in 20+ games at a time, running 1-2 of my own, and being so caught up on posts in all of them that I'm bored out of my mind and spamming F5 hoping for somebody, somewhere, to post something that I can respond to.

Things are going to be slow for a bit longer, though, as I work on this project. My deadline for it is mid-December, but my personal goal is to have it wrapped up no later than mid-October. There has been some talk about letting me hire 1-2 developers to work under me, which would take a lot of the stress off. It won't help much with the hours, since I'll still have to be the one meeting with the Korean team, but hopefully it will leave me with the cognitive resources to post even on the harder days, and maybe free up some of my time in the 9-6 stretch to post while I'm at work during the longer days. They started talking about having me hire people back in February, and it hasn't happened yet, so I'm not holding my breath on that one, but there's still a chance.

They're talking about putting me in charge of another huge project too, because of the progress they've seen me make with this one. I won't have to work with the Korean team for that one though, and it will require me to hire help, so if that goes through then we might be back on track sooner than expected. Taking on the second project would also include a promotion and a raise, so I won't complain too much if that one does go through. We'll see.

In the meantime, I'll post when I can. Once I get this first projected wrapped up, we'll get back to the steady posting rate that this game was used to

Akyra, the item you ordered via the bag of holding would have arrived on the same day as the fight on the tower. Not in time for you to attune to it before the fight, so I didn't mention it then, and then we had more important things to talk about, and then I forgot about it.

I'm pretty sure you have enough to cover the potions. There is about 160 gp in the party fund, plus what you all have on your characters individually. With Sakamoto leaving the game, I can add some of the value of his items to the party fund as well, as he received some valuable things just before he left.

I haven't had a chance to dig through all the threads to find gold totals for everyone, but I might just swap to using a Wealth Level, and whatever your wealth level is can cover the costs of things up to certain gold amounts. Your wealth level right now, for example, would cover everything up to 100g, so any items you want to buy up to that amount we just assume the group has the funds to cover it and you add it to your sheets.

It cuts down on the book keeping, but not everyone likes that since wealth is one of D&D's forms of reward, and that kind of goes away with this change. Let me know what you think.

Who wants to carry which potions? Lets get things divided up and recorded on character sheets.

You can also add to your sheets anything your character wants from the PHB. All forms of consumables are in short supply here, so there are limited quantities of those available.

I know some of our number are already in the midst of holiday travels and celebrations, and I will personally be doing that after Christmas, but leading up to the new year. I don't anticipate a whole lot of movement in the game between now and the end of the year, so we'll stick mostly to RP at the current camp, and perhaps the rest of the travel to Axeholm itself in this year, but the actual exploration of that dungeon will likely start early in the new year.

What happened with Sakamoto's set of eyes of the night? Could we say that Khorth inherited them? He certainly could use them, carrying a torch while scouting and needeing his 2 hands to fight is not very efficient.

Also the helmet that you created is not in Khorth's inventory, GM. I don't even remember what it did

Yeah, you can inherit the Goggles.

Skull helmet -  You have a +1 bonus to AC while you wear this helmet. In addition, if you move at least 20 feet towards a target and then attack them with a melee weapon attack on the same turn, you can choose to make a special attack using the helmet instead of the weapon. The helmet deals 3d4 piercing damage and uses Strength for its attack and damage rolls, and you are proficient with it. If you hit and the target is no more than one size larger than you, it must also succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

FYI - these two descriptions were brought to you by the use of AI.

quote:
Giant Spider 1 raced toward the cluster of targets nearest to it. Khorth had managed to move himself before it closed in, leaving elf and dwarf on its menu. As the giant spider closes in on Ariadne, its many legs scrabble across the ground, making a loud skittering noise. Its massive jaws snap hungrily, revealing rows of razor-sharp teeth. Its eyes are black and gleam hungrily in the dim light of the dungeon. The spider's body is covered in mottled brown hair, and its legs are long and spindly. As it approaches, it raises its forelegs, ready to strike, and its venomous fangs glisten with toxic saliva.

Giant Spider 4 stops its reflexive flailing, and retaliates against Khorth. Jaws close in and sharp pain follows as Khorth feels the giant spider's venom trying to take root as well. The preservation of life was a natural instinct for beasts of all sizes, and it sought to remove itself via the same strand of webbing it had used to attack. But Khorth was a hunter, not keen on letting his pray slip through his fingers. Dragon-fang sword pierced carapace once more, and with a warbling thump, the spider fell dead to the floor, legs curled up against its abdomen.

It's a cool little tool to use for certain things. It's been all over youtube lately for either aiding or replacing your GM. I don't think it's anywhere near good enough to replace a DM, but it's pretty decent for coming up with ideas and prompts, and for giving you a description of something. It does tend to over describe some things, but it gives really good details for others. I'm going to keep messing around with it off and on to see where it goes. I would totally use it to run one-shots or solo games now and then. It's certainly not ready to run a campaign in any capacity, though.

Ariadne let her fiery sphere lapse, then looked at her Traveling Companions.
"Everyone who was wounded, gather around. I can summon a healing spirit of nature, which should help everyone. "

If the three wounded people are willing, Ariadne has them stand around her in a tight circle, no more than a foot or so away, and begins concentrating.  She soon begins glowing with a green aura that smelled of new blossoms and fresh grass, and a magic emanated that started healing everyone.

OOC: Healing Spirit cast, healing 1d6 a round for three rounds, for a total of 17 points.

12:23, Today: Ariadne Greenthorn rolled 17 using 3d6 with rolls of 5,6,6.  healing spirit.

The spirit heals 1+Wis times, so you get 4d6, but each d6 applies to only 1 person, so you'll need to decide who you want to hand those d6s out to.

I'll get us moving again soon. My wife and I have our home back to ourselves again, but now I'm working 18 hour shifts to prepare for a massive software release. There's a fair amount of downtime here and there depending on how the servers react, but it's a minute or two here, another there, and so on.

I think I've got time to post here tonight, after this update finishes installing. It's been running now for 15 hours, and was estimated to take only about 4, but if I stop it to troubleshoot then I have to restart the whole thing, and 15 hours is a lot to lose if the estimation was just inaccurate.

As always, this is just an update to keep you somewhat in the loop. You never have to worry about me ghosting, this site has been a favored hobby of mine for over 20 years, and that's not changing any time soon. The long shifts are going to continue until the second half of July, so anticipate some slowness for the next few weeks.

Re: OOC: Umberage Hill

I've got the work schedule mostly under control, so I'm getting ready to start this one rolling again.

I can't access the map while I'm plugged into the office network, so I'll try to get it done tonight after I get home.

Sorry, I thought I was still waiting for a post.

I have most of the round wrapped up, but I need some saves from people who I messaged. I could roll them for you, but with this being a boss fight I would rather let you roll your own. I'll post the round recap after I get those rolls.

With a series of bad saving throws, a chain of unfortunate events has occurred, and now I need even more.

Ariadne and Chlora, I need a Con save from each of you, please. You can post it here instead of the IC thread.

That's not the ending I had intended for us to have, but the dice fall how the dice fall.

Technically, the four of you who failed saves against the banshee's wail are unconscious at 0 HP rather than immediately dead, but with no way to heal or return to consciousness, the banshee and the three ghouls who saved against the turn undead will kill the rest of you in the next 1-2 turns as well.

I hope you were able to enjoy the game up to the that point in the story. I haven't had a TPK in one of my games in over a decade. There's always a chance, especially with monsters who can zero your HP in a single round, like the banshee, but the dice were absolutely not in our favor for that crucial round.

So, that leaves us with a decision of where to go from here. The story of these characters is over, but in the wide world of D&D, there's always another story to tell. If you need to take some time to think things over, feel free to do so.

We can start this adventure over from the beginning with new characters. We can start a new campaign, and a different story all together. There is no obligation to do anything, of course, so walking away is also an acceptable option. If you have a suggestion or desire to play something in particular, now is a perfect time to bring it up.

If you're interested in a new game, lets talk about what everyone would like to do.

For this one, I really enjoyed it and don't regret joining it after it started. It has been a blast and Khorth was fun to play with his wierd ways

Thanks for game, all of you!

In reply to Ariadne Greenthorn (msg # 658):

While somewhat true, Akyra was going to get paralyzed this turn either way because of her saving throws, which also would have turned off the silence. At best, you would have gotten one more round of actions before the wail took place. It might have been enough, it might not. That's the way it goes, sometimes, and getting ghouls off the healers was just as logical a move as anything else, and probably the right play overall.

"Firehairs", don't feel bad, that was an epic TPK, and my first one in 30+ years of playing RPGs. I had fun and enjoyed playing with you all, that's all that count. Ultimately, its not GM Vs Players, the goal of those games is to build a story all together and have fun doing it, we will still be talking about that ending in years... and that means it was a success ;)

The current lean seems to be toward Curse of Strahd (of those who've voiced any opinion).

Does anyone not want to play CoS, but does want to play in a new campaign?

I'll leave this game open for a little while for those who like to save their writing and such, but I will delete the game after a while. That will move it to a new heading for Deleted Games, and it will stay there for about a year (I think) before RPOL actually deletes the game, so you'll have a fair amount of time to gather anything you want from it before it's totally gone.
