Re: Boss Fight - The King of Cragmaw Castle

Sakamoto catches King Grol with his kama, drawing a reaction that opens the bugbear to a two-handed strike to either ear. Grol reals back, blood gushing from his wounds as well as his nose. (King Grol takes 10 damage and is near death)

Legendary Action (Counter Attack) Grol takes a wild swing at Sakamoto in response, catching the monk on the chin. (Sakamoto takes 3 bludgeoning damage)
20:18, Today: King Grol rolled 18 using 2d20+4, dropping the lowest dice only.  Counter Attack, 3 damage.

King Grol roars with fury as he swings the morningstar at Bharkel. The spikes impale flesh, digging deep. (Bharkel takes 11 piercing, reduced to 5)
20:21, Today: King Grol rolled 18 using 1d20+4.  Reckless.
20:21, Today: King Grol rolled 15,11 using d20+4,2d8+2.  Morning Star.

Bharkel made a powerful slashing attack, that Grol parried with both arms, to ensure it didn't connect. Effective, but poorly conceived, as it left him open to a follow-on attack. Swiftly, Bharkel came in close, pushing the blade of her second axe directly into the hideous fat of his neck, and furiously pulling across. The sharp edge tore through flesh, fat, and veins, causing his hot blood to spurt out onto Bharkel, who seemed enthralled and encouraged by it. (King Grol is dead)

Akyra lies unconscious and bleeding, though not as badly as she could be. (1 success, 0 failure)

BonThot sends another blast of frost magic at the Grick, causing another terrible scream to be released. (Grick takes 4 damage and is slowed)

Ariadne lies unconscious and bleeding, looking somewhat pale. (0 success, 1 failure)

Goblin 4 sees King Grol fall, and shouts to the grick, [Language unknown: "Tra, mi! Ei!"] He then takes off running away from the group.

The Grick crawls away as quickly as it can, struggling against the frost magic. (Grick has fled the battlefield)

Pavel lies unconscious and bleeding, holding on for the moment. (1 success, 1 failure)

The Owlbear finally free from his prison, cares not one bit about the creatures within those stone walls. It returns to the wood, more than content to have found freedom. (owlbear has left combat)

Round 9 - Combat is over

BonThot shows off some mad medicine man skills coming out of no where. "I need some help here!" he calls out. Ariadne is stabilized.

Re: Boss Fight - The King of Cragmaw Castle

"Bharkel, the Goblin, if you will." Sakamoto called to the raging Elf, knowing her rage would only remain while she remained in battle. "The monsters will likely pose no further threat to us."

He then went to the Dragonborn cleric, kneeling by her side and retrieving some poultices and wrappings from the pack worn across his body. "Remain calm, Akyra." he whispered. Seeing his initial efforts fail, though, he takes a moment to center his mind before trying again. "It has been some time since my last lessons in wound tending, I'm afraid ... "

Today: Sakamoto rolled 7 using 1d20+3, rerolling all ones ((Medicine Check)).
Dammit, I needed to ROLL a 7, not GET a 7. :(

This'll likely be my last post for the weekend. Sakamoto will keep trying to stabilize the injured for his actions while I'm gone.

Re: Boss Fight - The King of Cragmaw Castle

Sakamoto calls for Bharkel to go finish off the goblin and grick, and the raging elf woman complies. The monk attempts to stabilize Akyra, but the blood continues to flow. (failure)

Bharkel chases down the grick next turn, killing the beast. Some thirty seconds later, the goblin falls to her hand axes as well.

Akyra's breathing becomes a bit hoarse. (failed save, 1:1)

BonThot goes to assist the newest member of the group, the elven druid. He applies pressure to the wounds, and elevates what parts he can that are actively loosing blood, trying to keep it flowing into the safe parts of her body. After only a few moments, her breathing calms ands BonThot can see that the bleeding has successfully been stopped. (Ariadne is stable and does not need to make any more Death saves)

Ariadne experiences the closest state to actual sleep that she will ever experience in her life, as her body reaches a state of stability and the healing process begins.

Pavel is still bleeding, but not quite as much as he was a moment ago. His breathing is still dangerously shallow, but his odds seem good. (success, 2:1)

Round 10 - Akyra & Pavel, another Death Save from you both, please.

Re: Boss Fight - The King of Cragmaw Castle

The King of Cragmaw Castle had been defeated, along with all of those who served him. Only a captured owlbear and a mysterious drow who had been trying to work some kind of deal had managed to escape, and neither of those seemed to want any part in facing this group.

All three of the companions who had taken serious injury to the point of being near death had been saved through the efforts of the those who remained. Pavel makes his 3rd save and stabilizes. Akyra passes her second and BonThot stabilizes her.)

The goblins were vanquished, darkness was setting in, and the wounded were in need of time to heal. Castle ruins may not be the prettiest place to catch some rest, but there were filthy goblin beds, dirty kitchen tables, and plenty of floor space available in some of the best shelter you could find for a number of miles (not to mention carrying 3 unconscious allies would be beyond you all).

Gundren was still yet to be found, half the castle had yet to be explored, but all of these heroes had survived odds that, coins to carrots, should have claimed all of their lives.

Welcome to level 3, everyone.

"We need rest and now. I almost met Bahamut in person, all because we were reckless - not again. We need time to heal and regain magic"

She looked around. "There will be more here, and we need to search for gundren or clues. But first, rest"

Sakamoto looks to BonThot with gratitude followed by confusion. He's not quite sure what the Human means by his comments about speaking similarly, but Sakamoto chalks it up to his not speaking this dialect of Common fluently, and decides it would be rude to inquire further. Instead, he just thanks the man for his kind words. "Your words bolster my spirits, BonThot. Thank you. I am glad our companions will all live."

Re: Boss Fight - The King of Cragmaw Castle

Those who had more energy than the rest helped to clear away bodies of the fallen goblinoids to make room for a comfortable recovery. As comfortable as you could get in a crumbling ruin, at least. Though the work of clearing a space took no more than five or ten minutes, full darkness had set in by the time they were finished.

Throughout the night, the group did their best to rest and recover in the ruins of Cragmaw Castle. Watches were set for those who had the energy to do so, with Bharkel filling in for more than half of them thanks to her elven heritage gifting her with no need for sleep. More than once, she got up to go an investigate sounds, but each time it was revealed to be nothing of importance. Things shifted here as time and weather continued to take its toll.

In the early morning hours a light rain blew through the area, lasting only a few short minutes and doing barely more than a sprinkle, but it brought a welcome coolness to the air and helped to clean away some of the dusty air. It wasn't much, but it actually helped things to tangibly feel renewed and provided a little elevating boost to the overall mood as well.

When morning's light came, everyone was back in working order. Wounds had healed well enough through a combination of medicinal tending, natural healing, and even a touch of prayer. (full rest achieved)

Then it was time to find Gundren and Don-Jon. The group pushed on through the remainder of the castle, looking for signs of their friends and employers.

Pavel calls a halt when the group goes near the door where the grick had entered the kitchen, noting odd markings in the dirt and rocks. When the grick had come through, it had skirted around a section of flooring and then up the walls to come through the door from above. Testing the floor in that area, the stones crumble away to reveal a pit trap.

In the northwest portion of the castle, the group found the goblin's storeroom. The food was beyond what any of you would be willing to eat under normal circumstances, but there was a small cask of dwarven brandy that seemed to be intact. You also found the weapons and armor that you know belonged to Gundren and Don-Jon. You can tell from looking at the armor that they had definitely taken some arrows during the ambush, but nothing stood out as particularly life-threatening, giving you hope.

In another room you find what was likely the hobgoblins' barracks, with larger beds than those of the goblins you'd found during your initial clash with the goblins. Brackets on the walls of the room held a number of weapons. The floors were kept clean despite obvious damage to the walls, showing that the hobgoblins were much more disciplined than their smaller cousins.
Contents: 5 spears, 4 longswords, 3 morningstars, and 2 greatswords all as listed in the PHB. BonThot finds a staff made out of glass. Ariadne finds a lantern.

The northern section reveals a high, narrow hall that looks as if it might have once been part of a chapel or shrine. Angelic figures are sculpted along the room's upper reaches, looking down on the floor below. To the north, heavy curtains block a matching pair of archways, and between them is a cracked but ornately carved stone brazier. Akyra notes that carvings on the doors and walls depict images of human gods; Oghma, god of knowledge, Mystra, goddess of magic, Lathandar, god of the dawn, and Tymora, goddess of luck.

Sakamoto's short stature allows him to notice a glint of something buried beneath coal in the brazier. Moving the coal aside reveals a golden statue of a sun elf, wrapped in a crimson cloth.

Pavel notices more of the grick's markings now that he's seen what kind the creature leaves, and is able to determine that this is the room the Grick had called its lair. There are signs that it would climb the walls and then nestle into the crevices of the carvings up above. It seemed a perfect spot for a grick and goblin ambush if someone were to wander into this room. Pavel finds a small rod embedded in one of the images, pressing a button makes it come away in his hand.

On the other side of those twin curtains, you see that goblins had no use for humanoid gods, so here they had erected a shrine to their own. A stone alter stood in the middle of the room, covered with bloodstained black cloth. Golden ritual implements - a chalice, knife, and censer - are carefully arranged on top of the alter. Bharkel and Akyra are both able to determine the shrine as being dedicated to Maglubiyet, the patron deity of goblins and hobgoblins. The cloth covered the entire alter, but moving it to have a look, you see that it too was covered with images of the human's gods before the goblins chose to defile it.

In the southeast portion, you find the corpse of a hobgoblin with injuries from large claws and a beak. It doesn't take long to figure out this is where the owlbear had been kept prisoner, and once King Grul had called for its release, hoping it would attack all of you, the beast had killed the hobgoblin who set it free on its way to finding you. Near the door is a broken section of stone and wood that you can see is fresh. Inside is a small alcove with a wooden chest. The chest had no lock and the sounds of coin were heard within as BonThot pulled it out. Inside the chest are a number of coins, a potion, and a pair of scrolls.
Contents: 90 electrum pieces (2 ep = 1 gp), 120 gp, a potion of healing, a scroll of silence, and a scroll of revivify. Sakamoto finds a dull gray cloak.

At last, in the northeastern section of Cragmaw Castle, you find a chamber set up as a crude living space with thick furs thrown on the floor to serve as carpets, old trophies hanging on the walls, a large bed to the north, and a brazier of coal ash giving off the faintest remains of heat from having burned last night. A round table of chairs stands to the south near the door. Near the table, on the floor, are Gundren and Don-Jon. They are bound and badly beaten, but alive.

Sitting on the table is a map and three more potions of healing.

Re: Boss Fight - The King of Cragmaw Castle

Though feeling shaky at first,  Ariadne was able to be up and about fairly quickly,  and helped explore the rest of the castle.   With some amusement, she was weirdly disappointed with how easy the rest of the rescue was, though she had to admit that the initial battle had had enough drama to last her a lifetime (and, technically speaking,  it almost DID last the rest of her life).
Finding her old friend Gundren and his companion was a joyful moment, which was a rare thing in life.  She greeted them both with enthusiasm.
The spoils of the battle,  while secondary,  were also a lovely touch.   Money,  salable goods, and a lantern which radiated strong magic, and which would be fun to play with later.

She helped BotThot with his cleanup of the shrines.  Normally Ariadne was a "live and let live" kind of girl,  in regards to religion.    These goblins could worship a slice of lemon pudding, for all she cared.  But, she was feeling a bit vindictive after almost dying,  and didn't mind taking out her frustrations on their shrine.
