Combat Thread

Whenever we are in combat, all combat moves go here.  A combat post will normally include what are attempting to do, a copy and paste of your offense and defense rolls, and any snappy lines you have.

Then when it's time to resolve the round, I'll post the combat results in the main episode thread with modifications to indicate success or failure.

Please remember to post what you are attempting, not what you are doing since you don't known if you succeed or fail until the round is resolved.

For example; "Player 1 throws a punch towards the vampire's face." would be correct NOT "Player 1 hits the vampire in the face" since we don't know if he hit or not until the round is resolved.

Don't forget to add all relevant details in the dice rolls such as if spending a drama point, and appropriate modifiers such as the -3 through the heart penalty if trying to stake a vampire through the heart.

Some of you may know this system, I've seen it used in several unisystem games.

Posting in this thread will only be required in combat. Other rolls for example  research rolls or picking a lock, etc. can be done right in the normal thread, just remember to paste your roll results.

Time out.

We're about to do our first fight scene.  I want to go over a few things before we start fighting, which I will now do step by step.

First thing:

This is a d10 game so when you make a roll make sure it says d10 when using the dice roller.

I just did a couple of test rolls and the dice roller appears to default to d20, so you have to remember to change it to d10 each time you roll.

If you incorrectly roll using a d20, the roll will have to be done again.

Next thing:

Each character gets to make one offense move and one defense move per round.

(Esperanza can make one additional move due to higher Slayer dexterity, which I'll get to in a minute.)

You should be making two rolls per round, one offense and one defense.

If you don't make a defense roll, you will get hit and take damage.  Not making a defense roll is like wearing a t-shirt that says "Hey bad guys! Free hit!"

Esperanza can make one additional action due to her higher dexterity.  The additional action is at  a -2 penalty.  So she makes either two offense moves and one defense move per round (second offense move with -2 penalty) or one offense move and two defense moves per round (second defense at -2 penalty).

Be sure to go read my house rules in the Game Rules thread.

I want to go over this house rule in more detail since it will come up each round:

*Defense -When you roll your defense, don't specify dodge or parry, just label it defense. I've merged dodge and parry together. For your defense move roll, use Dexterity plus either Kung Fu or Acrobatics or Getting Medieval, whichever is higher.

Forget what the core rulebook says about dodging or parrying.  It's void.  You can take some Wite-Out correction tape and blank it out.

I'm making defense rolls as easy as possible.  Your defense move will apply to all attacks on you equally, whether close combat or ranged.

Billy didn't go looking for trouble, but if a vampire approached him (or anyone but Esperanza), he tried to punch it in the nose.  He kept his hands up - now with the hopes of keeping fangs from neck rather than fists from face, but it made little difference in terms of placement, nor of likely efficacy.

Liam was confused.  Either Tori had never seen a movie before or had no clue that stories of vampires came from something that really existed.  His jaw hung open as she stepped forward toward the danger.  How was he supposed to protect someone if she didn’t want to be protected?!?

If the vampire came at him, he used the stylin brown corduroy sport coat like a matador’s red cape to try and confuse and misdirect it.  If Liam was ignored, he stands there dumbfounded at Tori’s actions.

(Defense 6+dex+skill)

14 plus full defense +3 = 17.

Hopie-

The Toss move in the corebook is Strength doubled -4 + d10 roll

And it's described like this:

TOSS: Your basic “pick up victim, then hurl victim
across the room just to prove how badass you are”
move.

Hopie isn't just hurling someone across a room (or cemetery in this case), she's hurling him towards a specific target (another vampire), which would be a little more difficult.

So I'm adding another -2 penalty to the Toss for the increased difficulty.

For future reference:  Toss at no particular target: Strength doubled  -4 + d10 roll
Toss at specific target:      Strength doubled  -6 + d10 roll

Your rolls are fine, but in the future could you please copy and paste the roll results with your combat post.

That makes it easier on me to have the results right there instead of having to find them on the dice roller.

Liam-

In the future could you please add your dex plus skill bonus to the roll modifier blank so your full score is displayed.  In this case, it would have been 8.  If you had put an 8 in the blank next to the die choice in the roller, the full score of 14 would have shown rather than just the 6 roll.

Also, since you are only defending this round, you can take the full defense option which is +3.  I presume you want to take it, so I'll edit your defense score to 17.

Please hold off on posting your next combat move.  I need to talk about a couple of more rules before we proceed and possibly offer some suggestions on how everyone can contribute to the fight.

As you can now see, I copy and paste your combat posts into the main episode thread then edit accordingly to reflect the success or failure of your actions.  It will keep going like this until the fight is over and I'll post a "fight is over, everybody back to the main episode thread message."

Combat Thread

As I indicated in the OCC notes at the end of the first combat round, Peter and Guy Guy are knocked down and were unable to attack for the rest of the round.

When a character is knocked down, they are at -4 to their actions until they can get up. All attacks against them are rolled normally, but they have a -4 to defend while down.

At the start of the next round, the good guys will have Initiative.

That means the start of next round would be a good time to attack Peter and Guy Guy since they will be at -4 to defend.

You don't have to of course.  If you prefer to go on full defense and not attack anyone, that is fine.  Whatever you think works for your character.

Advice for White Hats (In other words, everybody here but Esperanza):

Strength in numbers is good.  When two or more characters team-up against a vamp, you get the multiple attacker bonus to both your attacks and defense.

When you make your rolls, do not add a multiple attacker bonus.  We don't know for certain what the bonus is until everybody posts their move.  I'll take care of adding it when I resolve the round.

Which is what I did when Edward, Brittany, and Billy went after Vinnie 3 against 1.

End of speech.

You may now post your combat moves for next round.

Time for refresher course on combat.

You may want to read some of your old combat posts for reference.

More reminders:

This is a d10 game.  Don't forget to change the dice roller to d10.  It seems to default to d20 most of the time.

Each character gets one offense move and one defense move per round, so you should have two rolls.

Remember Defense is Dexterity plus Kung Fu or Acrobatics or Getting Medieval plus d10.

Use whichever of the 3 skills is your highest.

For example:

Liam's defense roll would be Dexterity plus Getting Medieval plus d10 since his Getting Medieval skill is higher than his Kung Fu or Acrobatics.

And so on.

You may post your combat moves now.  Any questions, just ask.

Liam readied his sword and slid the padding off.  The tape that had held it in place easily came free. The wooden blade had a sharpened tip.  He absolutely couldn’t use it for Larping anymore.  He would have to make a new one before the next meeting.

The vamp faces made it obvious that any hope of something else was out of the question.  He moved in on the one Billy had aggravated and swung at the vampires leg.  Maybe he could crack it one good and it wouldn’t be able to walk well after that.

Liam swung the blade up in a defensive parry.

Billy fumble with his sword in the general direction of the vampire he had "photographed"... from the feel of it twisting in his hand, he was very concerned that he might harm someone living rather than a vampire.

He prepared to defend himself with his hands rather than risking impaling someone with his slab of scrap metal.

15:19, Today: Billy Thomson rolled 10 using 1d10+4.  Defense without the sword!

The good guys had intiative this past round and will again thanks to Liam's fast reaction time.

Based on Liam's description, I read his move as hitting the vamp with the flat part of his sword rather than the sharp part (which was good, hitting him with the flat part did more damage.)

Tori would have taken 13 points of damage, but the costumes the trio is wearing give 3 points of body armor reducing it to 10.

Director:
The vamp looked in Billy's direction.  "You're useless with a sword kid.  You should stick to the James Bond gadgets."

Billy frowned deeply to see Tori hurt badly.  To the back of the vampire, he retorted: "And you're useless with that face, dope.  You should stick to paper bags."

He did think the vamp was right about his sword, though, so he dropped it and swung his fist for all he was worth for the vamp's right kidney.

15:53, Today: Billy Thomson rolled 5 using 1d10+4.  Defensing!
15:57, Today: Billy Thomson rolled 13 using 1d10+3.  Damage, if it comes to that.

Also, I'm away from book but if we can add a drama point after the roll to ensure a hit, I'd be doing that with Tori down.

Tori, since you're only defending this round, you can go on Full Defense which gives you a +3 to your defense which raises it to 15.

Billy, spending a drama point on your attack gives it a +10 bonus to your attack score making it 18.

I've made a slight edit to each of your posts to reflect the adjusted numbers.

Brittany saw the vampire climbing the tree to come after her.  She really should get ready for him.

But Tori needed help now.  Brittany loaded up another arrow and aimed at the heart of the blonde female vamp that hit Tori.

Then she'd turn to defend against her coming attacker.

I envision Liam using his LARP sword which is just wood with padding.  Not a metal blade.  I was treating it more like a bat once he removed the padding.  If you let me sharpen the tip, then that is what he would have done.

The real sword is still sheathed on his person.  He's not sure about that yet.  It's all kind of surreal.

Liam was worried about Tori.  It looked like she got punched hard and suddenly she was trying to back away.  "Tori?"

He had wanted to believe this wasn't real.  That this was all a dream or better yet, just a game.  A heated sparring session.  Tori didn't look like she wanted any more of it and one was headed for Brittany too.  They didn't look like they were playing around.  Liam wanted to give as good as they had gotten.

Liam raised his stick and brought it down on the vampire's collar bone.  He hoped to drop this one so he could help Tori.  His stick came up to parry any attack on himself.

Brittany recoils from the vamp's punch to her eye area.

Her rage overcomes the pain.

"OWWWWW!!!!!  You mother ******!!!!!  That's going to be a black eye!  I've got cheerleader tryouts tomorrow!!!!" Brittany screams loud enough for everyone in the cemetery to hear.

Standing close to the edge of the roof, Brittany attemps a judo flip on the vampire which will hopefully send him off the roof and crashing to the ground below.

He once again clubbed at Billy’s vampire aiming at it’s head.  Liam then readied his stick to defend against any counter attack.

Re: Combat Thread

Billy stumbled back from the body shot from the vamp, his face looking grave.  He quickly felt around his outsides to make sure none of his insides were out where they shouldn't be.  Everything felt okay... or at least fixable.

His hopeful look returned when Brittany went to toss the vamp off the roof.  He pulled his stake out and attempted to plunge it where the vamp least wanted it - straight into the heart.

Looked like everyone else was done so I wanted to get this in, but I'm away from books and am not sure of staking rolls:
22:46, Today: Billy Thomson rolled 18 using 1d10+10.  Attempted staking of downed vamp (DP, no other bonuses or penalties included - away from books).
22:46, Today: Billy Thomson rolled 8 using 1d10+4.  Defense!

Re: Combat Thread

Billy, let me make sure I understand your move correctly.

Billy is anticipating Brittany will successfully flip her vamp off the roof, and when the vamp hits the ground, Billy will be right there to stake that vamp.  Billy is NOT attacking the vamp that just hit him.

Correct?

Your stake attack is correct.  It's Dex + GM -3 through the heart penalty which is this case is zero.  So it would be just DP plus d10.

Brittany rolls off the table and lands on her feet.

She looks behind her and grabs the mirror hanging on the wall.

No idea why this will work.  But Ms. Mancini said to grab it and I don't have a better plan. Brittany thought.

She holds up the mirror in the direction of Coach Richards.
