Combat Thread

Whenever we are in combat, all combat moves go here.  A combat post will normally include what are attempting to do, a copy and paste of your offense and defense rolls, and any snappy lines you have.

Then when it's time to resolve the round, I'll post the combat results in the main episode thread with modifications to indicate success or failure.

Please remember to post what you are attempting, not what you are doing since you don't known if you succeed or fail until the round is resolved.

For example; "Player 1 throws a punch towards the vampire's face." would be correct NOT "Player 1 hits the vampire in the face" since we don't know if he hit or not until the round is resolved.

Don't forget to add all relevant details in the dice rolls such as if spending a drama point, and appropriate modifiers such as the -3 through the heart penalty if trying to stake a vampire through the heart.

Some of you may know this system, I've seen it used in several unisystem games.

Posting in this thread will only be required in combat. Other rolls for example  research rolls or picking a lock, etc. can be done right in the normal thread, just remember to paste your roll results.

Time out.

We're about to do our first fight scene.  I want to go over a few things before we start fighting, which I will now do step by step.

First thing:

This is a d10 game so when you make a roll make sure it says d10 when using the dice roller.

I just did a couple of test rolls and the dice roller appears to default to d20, so you have to remember to change it to d10 each time you roll.

If you incorrectly roll using a d20, the roll will have to be done again.

Next thing:

Each character gets to make one offense move and one defense move per round.

(Esperanza can make one additional move due to higher Slayer dexterity, which I'll get to in a minute.)

You should be making two rolls per round, one offense and one defense.

If you don't make a defense roll, you will get hit and take damage.  Not making a defense roll is like wearing a t-shirt that says "Hey bad guys! Free hit!"

Esperanza can make one additional action due to her higher dexterity.  The additional action is at  a -2 penalty.  So she makes either two offense moves and one defense move per round (second offense move with -2 penalty) or one offense move and two defense moves per round (second defense at -2 penalty).

Be sure to go read my house rules in the Game Rules thread.

I want to go over this house rule in more detail since it will come up each round:

*Defense -When you roll your defense, don't specify dodge or parry, just label it defense. I've merged dodge and parry together. For your defense move roll, use Dexterity plus either Kung Fu or Acrobatics or Getting Medieval, whichever is higher.

Forget what the core rulebook says about dodging or parrying.  It's void.  You can take some Wite-Out correction tape and blank it out.

I'm making defense rolls as easy as possible.  Your defense move will apply to all attacks on you equally, whether close combat or ranged.

Hopie tries to defend against any attacks but on top of that, she tries to grab the nearest vampire and then to toss him at the next vampire, or at the Russian if tey are at equal distance.

18:01, Today: Esperanza Glass rolled 28 using 1d10+19.  Offence with Drama point  (a further -5 for the toss). And additional -2 for specific target, total toss score 21.
17:59, Today: Esperanza Glass rolled 18 using 1d10+11.  Defence.

Billy didn't go looking for trouble, but if a vampire approached him (or anyone but Esperanza), he tried to punch it in the nose.  He kept his hands up - now with the hopes of keeping fangs from neck rather than fists from face, but it made little difference in terms of placement, nor of likely efficacy.

Billy Thomson rolled 7 using 1d10+4.  Defense.
Billy Thomson rolled 11 using 1d10+4.  Offense.

Liam was confused.  Either Tori had never seen a movie before or had no clue that stories of vampires came from something that really existed.  His jaw hung open as she stepped forward toward the danger.  How was he supposed to protect someone if she didn’t want to be protected?!?

If the vampire came at him, he used the stylin brown corduroy sport coat like a matador’s red cape to try and confuse and misdirect it.  If Liam was ignored, he stands there dumbfounded at Tori’s actions.

(Defense 6+dex+skill)

14 plus full defense +3 = 17.

Hopie-

The Toss move in the corebook is Strength doubled -4 + d10 roll

And it's described like this:

TOSS: Your basic “pick up victim, then hurl victim
across the room just to prove how badass you are”
move.

Hopie isn't just hurling someone across a room (or cemetery in this case), she's hurling him towards a specific target (another vampire), which would be a little more difficult.

So I'm adding another -2 penalty to the Toss for the increased difficulty.

For future reference:  Toss at no particular target: Strength doubled  -4 + d10 roll
Toss at specific target:      Strength doubled  -6 + d10 roll

Billy -

Your rolls are fine, but in the future could you please copy and paste the roll results with your combat post.

That makes it easier on me to have the results right there instead of having to find them on the dice roller.

Thanks!

Liam-

In the future could you please add your dex plus skill bonus to the roll modifier blank so your full score is displayed.  In this case, it would have been 8.  If you had put an 8 in the blank next to the die choice in the roller, the full score of 14 would have shown rather than just the 6 roll.

Also, since you are only defending this round, you can take the full defense option which is +3.  I presume you want to take it, so I'll edit your defense score to 17.

Edward shouts at the teenagers.

"Hopie!  Stay with me!  I'll guide you thorough this!  The rest of you get out of here!

Billy! Liam!  Tori!  Other girl!  Run!"

Edward then points his crossbow towards the heart of Vinnie, the vamp closed to him and pulls the trigger.

Edward Hudson rolled 10 using 1d10+3.  Crossbow shot to the heart.
Edward Hudson rolled 10 using 1d10+6.  Defense.

"Other girl?!  The name's Brittany Foster old man!"

Brittany is quite annoyed that Edward doesn't know her name.  She glances at Billy who looks nervous, but isn't going to pieces. "You stay here Billy, I'll handle this." She drops her purse and jogs towards Edward.

If he misses the crossbow shot (and probably will because he's old), it will be up to her to stop the vampire.  Or gang member on PCP.  Or whatever it really is.  Brittany rears her fist back ready to punch the guy closest to Edward.

OCC: Brittany rolled a 10 for her punch move!  Victory dance!

Brittany Foster rolled 15 using 1d10+5.  Punch vampire .
Brittany Foster rolled 16 using 1d10+9.  Defense.

Tori isn't looking to start anything, but will defend herself if attacked.

06:46, Today: Tori Hart rolled 12 using 1d10+7.  Defense.
(Should have added 3 for Full Defense, for 15.)

Nice work troops.

Please hold off on posting your next combat move.  I need to talk about a couple of more rules before we proceed and possibly offer some suggestions on how everyone can contribute to the fight.

As you can now see, I copy and paste your combat posts into the main episode thread then edit accordingly to reflect the success or failure of your actions.  It will keep going like this until the fight is over and I'll post a "fight is over, everybody back to the main episode thread message."
