We have three player characters.

If you click the The Cast list, you'll see two characters in the NPC section which will be played by me.  Brittany Foster and Edward Hudson.

With three player characters and two NPCs, I think we have enough characters to get the game going soon.

*Edward Hudson is the Watcher.  Like Giles, he's the librarian of the school.  He's just started at Sunnydale High at the start of the 2006-2007 school year.  Remember the game will start in January 2007, halfway through the school year as the students return after new year.  As the game begins, he has yet to identify the new Slayer, that will come soon.

The three of you should at least be vaguely familiar with him, maybe more so if you spend a lot of time in the library.

*Brittany Foster is going to be the Cordelia of the group but less abrasive.  She's also a brand new student, the first day of the game will be her first day of school.  So of course none of you will know her.  She doesn't know anyone and has no social standing or position at all at Sunnydale High.

Esperanza, Billy, and Liam all have a class together: 6th period gym class (last class of the day)so you will all know each other from that class.

Does Esperanza have any idea what a Slayer is or that vampires are real? Or she blissfully unaware of it all?

Not vampires as such but...

WIKIPEDIA:
The legend of La Llorona is deeply rooted in Mexican popular culture, her story told to children to encourage them not to wander off in the dark, and her spirit often evoked in artwork. "La Cihuacoatle, Leyenda de la Llorona" is a yearly waterfront theatrical performance of the legend of La Llorona set in the Xochimilco borough of Mexico City, established in 1993 to coincide with the Day of the Dead.

The earliest documentation of La Llorona is traced back to 1550 in Mexico City. But there are theories about her story being connected to specific Aztec mythological creation stories. "The Hungry Woman" includes a wailing woman constantly crying for food, which has been compared to La Llorona's signature nocturnal wailing for her children. The motherly nature of La Llorona's tragedy has been compared to Chihuacoatl, an Aztec goddess deity of motherhood. Her seeking of children to keep for herself is significantly compared to Coatlicue, known as "Our Lady Mother" or Tonantsi (whose also comparable to the Virgen de Guadalupe, another significant mother figure in Mexican-culture), also a monster that devours filth or sin.

She believes in La Llorona, the hungry woman, who weeps for the children she drowned.

Remember the game takes place in 2007, so keep that in mind for your real world and pop culture references.

*George W. Bush is the president.

*If your character has a cell phone, it will be a flip phone.

*If your character likes super hero movies, you can't talk about the Marvel Cinematic Universe because it doesn't exist yet.  Iron Man 1 is still more than a year away from relase.

And so on.

Liam will be fine.  Probably.

The cemetery scenes in our series will have a lot of scope and atmosphere.

If we were an actual TV show, we would go out on location to real cemeteries to film the cemetery scenes.

Something they did during Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season One.  Then beginning with Season Two, they built a cemetery set which was used for the rest of the series.

Next time you watch a Buffy episode in Season One, pay attention to the cemetery scenes.  Then compare it to any cemetery scene in Season Two to Seven.  I'm sure you'll notice the difference.

Boss, may I ask a question about combat, please?

It's this.  If I make two offensive actions and want to use a drama point for the second, can I mae the drama point dependent on the success of the first action?  For example, if I want to grab hold of a vampire and then toss him, the second action can't happen unless I grapple him on the first action - so if I fail to grapple on the first action, do I still lose the drama point for the toss on the second?

When you make multiple attacks, the proper way to do it is make one roll for both attacks. The second attack would suffer the -2 penalty plus be modified if your doing a different attack for the second move (which is what your describing here).

The drama point would apply to both the first and second attacks, so you would get the +10 benefit to both moves.

The Drama Point rule section is not 100% clear on this, but I'm sure I read that's how it works somewhere else in the book, so that's how we'll handle it until further notice.

While we're on the subject of the Grapple move, make sure you read my house rule on how a grapple attack is now Dexterity plus Kung Fu - 2 and d10.  Not +2 like it says in the book.

I had a player in a previous game that used the grapple move a lot, which called to my attention to the fact that's it's way too easy to hit.  So I made it tougher.

This applies to villains too, so a vampire who wants to grapple you by the neck and then bite you will now find it harder to do.

Some fight commentary:

*The Multiple Opponent bonus was the White Hat's best friend.  Most of the White Hat attack and defend rolls would have been a fail in a one on one situation, but the multiple opponent bonuses I added when resolving the round made a big difference. Strength in numbers matters.

*You guys had a good night escaping the fight unscathed.  It's a rare occasion where all the good guys make it through a fight without getting hit and taking some damage.

If you read the section in the core rule book about crosses in holy water, it describes using a physical cross to repel a vampire.  And the vamp can defend from that by knocking the cross from your hand.  Touching a vampire with a cross causes two points of damage.

No mention of wearing pictures of crosses repelling vamps or holding up two sticks in cross shape, etc.

That's consistent with the show as I recall.

So that's the rule in effect here.  You can only repel a vamp with a Christian cross you can hold in your hand or wear around your neck that you obtain in a church, religious store, etc.  Pictures of crosses on clothes or holding two stick in cross shape won't work.  If it did, vamps would be way to easy to repel.

On lighting on the cemetery:

Between moonlight, residual light from nearby buildings, and a few exterior lights in the cemeteries, there will always be enough light to move around and fight without penalty.  Buffy and the characters never seemed to have a problem with enough light in the cemetery and neither will we.

Is the effect of injecting Holy Water the same as ingesting holy water?

Re: OCC Thread

Say for example, you had a syringe filled with holy water.  You stabbed a vamp with it, then injected it, that would count as internal ingestion of holy water.

Of course, keep in mind a minor can't just buy a syringe on demand, so this option would be very limited.

If you're thinking of dipping crossbow arrows in holy water, and then shooting a vamp, that wouldn't do it.  Not enough holy water.  A splash of holy water does two points of damage.  The amount of holy water on the tip of an arrow would be negligible.

Anyone have anything else to add to this discussion?

Sounds like the characters have a plan.  Brittany, Billy, and Hopie show up early and hide.

Liam and Tori show up with Tori disguised so the vampires think she's the slayer.

Good guys attack.  Epic battle ensues.

If you're done planning, we will move ahead to later tonight.

I’ve heard nothing from Billy.  I assumed he would be up close as well.  If he has a flash, that is probably best used in close.  Plus, only two people showing up for a group event seems like a poor showing.

Is Tori comfortable with them thinking she might be the Slayer?

Re: OCC Thread

Esperanza won't be rejoining us. That leaves us without a Slayer.

And that's absolutely no problem and won't keep us from restarting.

I've decided to change the cast structure of the game.  This will now be an all White Hat game.  Billy, Tori, and Liam are all White Hats.  As are Brittany and Edward.  No impact on any of you.  Any future players recruited will be White Hats as well.

I was inspired by watching some Buffy reruns. Remember at the end of Season 2, Buffy left Sunnydale.  At the start of Season 3 we learn she's working as a waitress in Los Angeles.  So who was taking care of the vampire problem in Sunnydale?  We learned that Cordelia, Willow, Xander, and Oz were fighting the vamps in Buffy's absence.  Just normal teenagers fighting vamps with no Slayer in town.

The first BTVS game I ever played on RPOL was an all White Hat game.  We had a lot of fun.  I think we can do it here too.

Re: OCC Thread

My plan is to pick up where we left off at the end of Episode 2.

You may want to read the last four pages of Episode 2 to refresh your memory on where we left off.

Here's the quick version:

*Edward was kidnapped by vampires.
*They left a note for the teens saying meet them at midnight at the Robinson Family Mausoleum or Edward dies.  The note was signed The Order of Raven.
*The teens made plans.  Brittany and Esperanza would show up early and get into ambush position. Billy, Liam, and Tori would show up at midnight to meet with the vampires in cosplay costumes Liam would provide.

That's about where we left things.  The difference now is Esperanza will never show up.  The White Hats will have to defeat the vampires with no Slayer.  Don't worry, it will be a winnable fight.

Now for the really good news!

Originally I said I wouldn't award Experience points until after Episode 5 where I would give you a lump sum for Eps 1 to 5. Changed my mind.  After we finish Ep 2 I will give you Ex points for Eps 1 and 2, then award Ex points at the end of each Episode onward.

Re: OCC Thread

Reminder to everybody who's carrying swords to use against the vampires:

House rule from the Game rules thread-

*Slash/stab attacks against vampires will be divided by five, just like with bullets, unless the slash/stab attack is a wooden weapon to the heart or decapitation attack which will work normally as explained in the rules.

This rule has been there since the start of the game, nobody noticed in the first fight since no one had a sword.

The point of this rule is to more in line with the show.  I can't think of an episode where Buffy used a sword to slice and dice a vamp before finishing them off, but yet she pounded a vamp with punches and kicks before staking them nearly every episode.

Unless you're going for a decapitation move, swords won't damage vamps much.

Example 1- Billy with his strength of 3 slashes a vamp with a sword to the midsection and gets three success levels.  That's 3 points of damage.

Example 2-Billy with his strength of 3 punches a vamp with his bare fist and gets three success levels.  That's 9 points of damage.

Decapitation is a tough move to hit.  Dex plus Get Med -5.  Liam with a his Getting Medieval skill of 5 will likely hit a Decapitation move if he spends a DP.  But everyone else could fail a Decapitation attack even when they spend a DP.

Re: OCC Thread

Here's a fun Brittany fact that will be relevant when the fighting starts.

Brittany's Getting Medieval skill is zero.

She has Archery as a Wildcard skill at level 3.

What does that mean?

If you read the rules for the Bow Shot maneuver in the Core book, it's Dex + Get Medieval - 2.
The Through the heart maneuver is a -3 penalty, meaning a Bow Shot Through the Heart has a total of -5.

Archery is a specialty skill that applies to the Bow Shot only, but since it's a specific skill the -2 penalty doesn't apply.  I didn't invent it, one of the Archtypes in the Corebook has it.

Brittany is good with the bow, not so good with other weapons.

If you want to borrow her bow in the fight, you'll have the -2 penalty on top of everything else.

You have two options on how to proceed after that.

*Head straight for the Mausoleum and wait for the vamps to arrive.

*Hide behind some trees and let the vamps arrive first at the Mausoleum before you show yourselves.

When you update your Drama Point total, don't forget to deduct the Drama points you spent during the battle.

*Experience points- Everybody gets 10 points.  5 for episode 1 and 5 for episode 2. I didn't award any at the end of Ep 1.  So here's a lump sum for Eps 1 and 2.

Re: OCC Thread

If you don't have the Corebook handy, here's a quick summary of Attribute and Skill improvement cost through Experience points.

Raising an Attribute costs two times XPs of the new level.  So for example, raising an attribute from 2 to 3 would cost 6 experience points.  (3 X 2 = 6)

Raising a skill is the same two times XPs of the new level.

Buying a skill you don't have (going from zero to 1) cost a flat five points.

*You CAN'T buy a new language skill unless you spend a month learning the new language before you spend the points.

*Normal human characters (which is the whole cast) healing rate will be constitution level per day.

Corebook says humans heal 1 point per day, constitution level per day if under medical care. Under this rule, you'll get back constitution level per day whether under medical care or not.

Since 8 days will pass between episode 2 and 3, everyone will be back to full life points when episode 3 begins.
