Sunnydale High School

2nd day back at school after new year.

Sunnydale students show up for school waiting for the first bell to ring as they hang out and talk outside.

For five students in particular, things have changed drastically in the last 24 hours.  They learned vampires were real and did battle with them.  Later today at lunch period they will meet with the school librarian who will try to explain it all to them.


OCC: It's the next morning.  Show up for school as you did at the start of the last episode and talk among yourselves.

It was the morning after the most unique night he had ever had.  He had been criticized for living in a fantasy world before.  Now he had proof vampires were real.  Who was the one not living in reality now?  He woke up eager to go back to school.

Liam had found Jimmy and Harry at their usual spot.  He was trying to to fill them in on the events of last night before the bell.  Unfortunately Liam was speaking so fast it was hard to follow.  “I had a date.  Met at the Bronze.  Run for President.  Went to the cemetery.  Some bullies were there.  Threatened to kill us.  Turns out they were real vampires!  Turned to dust and everything!”

Harry was doubtful.  “Vampires?  Really?  The rule book doesn’t say anything about dust.  That can’t be right.”

Jimmy was more practical.  “You were on a date?!?  I’d believe vampires before that!”

Hopie still hangs with the Hispanic kids, of course she does but now she also says hello to Tori and Brittany and Billy and Liam, sharing high fives and speaking respectfully.  She also finds the time to ask the coach whether Sunnydale High has ever had an archery team.

Coach Keel is on his way to the gym when Hopie Glass stops to ask him about a school archery team.

"Good morning Hopie.  There's never been an archery team as long as I've been here.  If you want one badly enough, you'll need to start a petition.  Go to the office and tell them you want a petition to start a new club or team.  Then you'll need 10 signatures, yours plus 9 more of kids who are genuinely interested in joining an archery team. After that it still might not happen due to funding problems, but if you can get 10 signatures there will at least be a chance.  I'll see in P.E. class later."

The coach heads off to the gym.

School librarian Edward Hudson grabs his briefcase, locks his car, then heads across the faculty/admin parking lot on the way to the library.

On the way through the lawn, he passes Hopie Glass.

"Good morning Hopie."

And Liam Roeker.

"Good morning Liam."

Edward doesn't stop to talk.  Best not to mention the meeting occurring at lunch period in the library. If he did, Hopie's friends or Liam's friends might want to know what it's about and can they attend.  That wouldn't do at all.  The meeting at lunch time was very private for a select group.

Hopie made her way to the office and asked for a petition to start a new team or club.  Once she has it, she begins to make her rounds around her fellow students.

To the Hispanic students she said, "Hola Holmes, I had this idea to start teams at this school that could also teach us a thing or two when vatos from the Valley try to muscle in on our turf.  I'm trying to start an archery team but if others wanna try boxing or karate or that Japanese thing with the swords, that might be cool as well."

To 'Weasel' and 'her' entourage, she merely asked, hinting that she was unsure how to vote in the upcoming election but she'd be much happier if someone could make this happen.

To the famous five she said, "If we can hit a target from 90 meters, we can take out a vampire without danger."

To the unpopular kids she said, "Have you ever thought of becoming a jock?  You could you know, I'm trying to set up an archery team so we can beat them at their own game and later on take an Olympic gold." She would pause and add, "Of course, shooting would be easier but I doubt they'd let us have a shooting team."

Billy performed his regular ritual at the car before his father drove off for his stop at the middle school.

He did his normal pass through greetings, but when Esperanza stopped to bring up archery, he talked with her for a few minutes.  "That sounds pretty nice.  I'll give you a signature and show up, of course... but I'll probably be working on some alternate ideas as well."

Whenever he concluded talking with Esperanza, he approached Liam's group.  "Any of you guys done any work with lasers or light amplification?"

For all that she'd been convinced she'd have a sleepless night, Tori slept better than she expected and woke early. She cycled in, less hectically than the day before.

After a quick hello with the others from the night before, she slipped inside and headed for the school office.

"Hi. I'd like to sign up to run for class president."

In the school office:

The middle aged lady at the front desk asked Tori for some personal information and then looked up her records in the computer.  She asked Tori to fill out and sign a form.

"Alright Tori, you are now on the ballot for Sophomore class president.  Good luck to you dear."

Just then two other students walk into the office.  Malvina West and Weasel West.

Malvina speaks first.  "Tori! Sweetie!  Hello!  Remember last night we told you I was running for class president?  Well, we've decided Weasel should run for vice president.  Once we're both elected we'll be quite a team.  Sunnydale's dynamic duo. She's going to sign up right now."

Malvina gives Weasel an encouraging pat on the shoulder then turns back to Tori.

"So, what brings you here this morning?"

Esperanza's high five created a momentary break in the conversation.  Jimmy and Harry raised their hands too.  When they were left hanging, they just high fived each other.  "What was that?"  Jimmy asked wondering if it had anything to do with the date comment.  Liam shrugged.

He wasn't too surprised they didn't believe him right away.  "No really!  It was nuts!  Others saw it too.  Look... come to the library at lunch today and they can tell you.  She saw it."  He pointed to Esperanza as she disappeared into the school.

Liam gave a sort of wave to acknowledge Mr. Hudson when he mentioned his name.

The trio turned to Billy when he approached and blurted out his question.  There was a general negative shake of the heads.

"I had a character that was into lasers in a Paranoia game once.  Saw some movement down a dark hall and fired away.  Turns out it was just a mirror and I killed my clone.  It was awesome."  Harry commented.

"There was that Star Trek game with phasers.  Although those are different than lasers."  Liam added.

"No."  Jimmy flat out stated.

Once Billy moved on, the trio started to head into the school.

"I can't do lunch.  Got that ortho follow up today.  Mom's picking me up."

"I've got that meeting with Ms. Harvester and my parents.  She didn't like my answers on that last test we took."  Jimmy rolled his eyes.  "Another time perhaps."

In the school office:

Tori smiled. Malvina would know soon enough anyway.

"Just signing up to run for class president. Have you signed up yet?"

In the school office:

Malvina was speechless for a moment.

But she regains her composure quickly.

"Why yes.  I signed up yesterday.  I thought I would be running unopposed. Oh, wait!  I get it!  Somebody dared you to run against me.  And you can't refuse a dare can you Tori? Well, you're a brave girl."

Malvina says all this with a smile on her face and without a hint of malice in her voice.

"Well, I"m glad your running.  After I win, it will give my presidency more legitimacy since I defeated another candidate.  And I'm sure you'll get some votes.  Maybe 15 to 20% of the vote.  As hard as it is to believe, some people in our class don't like me."

As Malvina talks to Tori, Weasel completed the necessary process to enter the election just as Tori just did.

"Okay Malvina, I'm signed up to run for vice president.  Nobody has signed up yet for VP, so I'm uncontested so far." Weasel says to her cousin.

"Fabulous!  Well, we're done here.  Have a good Tori." Malvina says as she and Weasel exit the office.

Outside on the lawn:

Hopie has three signatures on her petition.  Her own, Billy's and one other student.

Most students she asked were annoyed she was bugging them about it first thing in the morning.

Some said "What!  You can start a new team or club with a petition?! I'm going to start my own petition!" Some prefer a cooking club or a croquet team to an archery team.

But only ten mintues have passed since she got the petition, so there are still plenty of people she hasn't talked to yet.

Then the bell rings.  Time to get to class.

Hopie is still smiling as she enters the class.  The last young man even though he didn't sign suggested that he might consider starting an alchemy club, to which Hopie said, "well if you sign mine, I'll sign yours."

She sat down in her usual seat, at the far left edge of the third row.

Billy shook his head in disappointment.  "Not what I meant, sorry."  He commented before leaving them to imaginary science while he pondered the real thing.

Billy didn't mind sci-fi - in fact, he quite enjoyed it.  It was a wonderful resource for ideas - harnessing the imaginations of hundreds or thousands of minds every year.  What bothered him was when people left it as fiction and didn't move it from theoretical to practical.  Or at least to experimental.

He doodled ideas for a short-beam light projector during his classes that morning.  When called on, he looked up, surprised.  He thought briefly over what was said when he was not truly listening and gave what he estimated to be a B-scoring response before returning to his doodles.

The day started and Liam settled into the routine.  Class, class, class, the occasional joke at his expense, then lunch.  He wished his friends had been able to come.  It would have been cool to have all three of them in on it together.  Scheduling...  At least he could fill them in later.

Pan the camera low to the ground.  A car pulls up to the curb at Sunnydale High. The passenger door opens.  A pair of feet touch the ground wearing  almost brand new expensive sneakers.

You hear the sleepy voice of a teenage girl say "Bye mom." with noticeably less enthusiasm than yesterday at this time.

As the camera pans up, you see Brittany Foster on her second day as a student at Sunnydale High.  Her outfit is as stylish as it was yesterday.  Her backpack is slung over her shoulder, her purse is in her left hand.  In her right hand is the Starbucks iced coffee she convinced her mom to stop and get for her on the way.

Brittany didn't have a good night.  She only got about 3 hours of sleep.  As her mom drives off the bell rings.  "Nuts." Brittany said as she jogged towards the school building and headed to her first class.
