Ahoy all (once people start joining)!

Currently I haven't got a specific character in mind, as I'm filled with a variety of ideas in my head.
As such, I'm happy to build around what others want to be.
I wouldn't want to pick a huckster when someone else is desperate to play one, for example, when I would be just as happy doing something else.

I'd most like to play an arcane background or be harrowed, as that way I am more tapped into the weird from the weird west.

As for what story/campaign to play, I'd be equally happy with Blood Drive or Showdown at Sundown, as I haven't done either, and I've started playing in a Horror at Headstone Hill.

Howdy everyone!

I went ahead and closed the Requesting New Players since I already got double what I can support.  So many great submissions, I wish I could run 2 groups.

Going to start trying to pair this down for remaining slots.

Honestly I've learned to take 2 more players than I want, because the attrition is incredible.  Some people just fall off, others just don't fit the game and bow out.

I'm very indifferent to whatever source material/adventure you want to use.

I've played virtually all of the archetypes at one point or another in one edition or the other (though some much less because games give out early), I don't mind picking "around" everyone else rather than get all worked up and have to switch.

Hello everyone! When it comes to the adventure, all three options are fine with me. I have a few character concepts in mind and I am flexible so can work around others. Looking forward to the game and exploring the Weird West with everyone.

Evenin' all, glad to be ridin' with this outfit!

I'd like to play either some sort of gray-hat lawman or some fashion of old-timer prospector that got "touched" by something he dug up...

Any scenario is fine by me. I have the material but have been "saving myself" for an opportunity like this! ;-)

Difficult decisions are done, welcome everyone.  I had no idea there was such an interest in Deadlands; wish there were more games on rpol as there's definitely support for them.

On to the next decision: which of the published adventures to run.  Your choices are:

Horror at Headstone Hill
The Twilight Legion needs a group to investigate the disappearance of Agent George J.A. Reeg, last seen in the town of Heaton Hill, Wyoming.  Agent Reeg was investigating a series of strange happenings and disappearances in the town and may have fallen victim to whatever is responsible for those events.  Will the posse be able to put a stop to it and bring peace to Wyoming or become another in a long list of missing persons?

Showdown at Sundown
Both the Territorial Rangers and the Agency have caught wind of strange happenings in Sundown, Wyoming, and dispatched personnel to investigate.  The Legion recognizes that this may involve the Reckoners and sends a group of their own.  Surely there's nothing that the Rangers, Agency and Twilight Legion together can't handle.....is there?

Blood Drive
Saddle up, pardner!  There's famine threatening out in the Great Maze and that can only cause outbreaks of fear, riots and other violence that gives power to the Reckoners.  The Legion plans to keep that in check by ensuring some of the ranchers in Texas are able to get their steers to the stockyards in Kansas, New Mexico or Colorado for the rail ride West.  A few weeks minding the herd, how hard could it be?

Those are your choices.  Feel free to lobby for any if you've a preference.  Any character type could potentially work for all 3 adventures.

When you're ready post your vote here in the thread

Hey all!

I'd personally love to play Blood Drive, since I'm currently running Horror at Headstone Hill for a group.

I would be interested in Showdown at Sundown, as well, but probably less so than Blood Drive.

Vote for either Blood or Showdown from me.

And now that we are all here (waves), it seems several of us are happy to be flexible when it comes to choosing a concept, but means none of us might do anything and end up with some sort of Mexican standoff.

Hello all!

Well, perhaps if no one is really interested in Horror at Headstone Hill, we take it off the table as someone in the group is already running it?

Yeah, I think there's some merit to giving everyone a little space at first in case someone's particularly motivated, but eventually you have to start making decisions or it goes nowhere.  Since everyone seems to have multiple ideas, I'll put up some posse ideas later.

As a tie breaker vote I'll say Blood Drive.  I don't think any of them are bad or whatever but if I had to pick one I'd say that one.

Okay, three ideas I have.  I have more but this is probably enough:

Insane Skull Faced Holy Wanderer:
I have long had a concept for a Blessed who comes off like an insane, scary looking person, who wears what looks like (and may be) Catholic vestments or maybe a habit, but with skull face paint (at least sometimes) who is constantly wailing about the inevitability of death and final judgment.  A sort of walking Momento Mori style figure.

But when you talk to him or her (honestly the gender doesn't matter, it will depend on what pictures I Can find lol), he/she is actually really chill and if you actually listen it's actually really benign/positive stuff like "You could die today so be a good person" etc.  This character nearly died while doing something evil, turned him/herself in after having an epiphany of guilt, found God in jail and kind of turned into a beneficent whackjob.

Wanders around the West making impromptu sermons, chastising outlaws, greedy land/rail/cattlebarons, and other do-badders for their sins, aids others as able.  Absolute lunatic, but he/she is not "wrong" per se.

Doesn't own very much, doesn't want very much, should have starved to death in the wilderness long ago but somehow hasn't.  Isn't actually a trained or educated priest/monk/religious official of any kind, has memorized the entire Bible but quotes it in weird ways and sometimes out of context, but clearly means well.

Vengeful Pretty Poker Player:
Another is a huckster based loosely off of the real life rough and tumble Alive Ivers, better known as "Poker Alice", the infamous gambler who was known for getting into shootouts.

A little girl's father becomes addicted to gambling and bets the family farm and loses (in his defense, he does so at gunpoint, though he certainly had a gambling problem).  When he reneges on the bet (made at gunpoint), ruthless gangsters, after bribing the corrupt sheriff, raid the homestead, kill the father and drive off the mother and children.

Mom and the kids have to go live in a mining town in poverty doing whatever odd jobs they can, eventually mom and siblings all get sick and die.  My character is the survivor.

She learns to survive by gambling and becomes very, very good at it, cultivating a persona while doing so.  However, it's the means to an end.  She becomes obsessed with ridding the world of people like the men who ruined her life.

Basically, a character who is at first glance all charm and loveliness, but who is also ruthlessly bloodthirsty and has a preoccupation with vengeance that's never going to be satisfied.

Half Breed Exile:
The third isn't really an archetype just an idea I have.  This character is a big strapping lad, a mountain of a man who is half white half Native.  He grew up on an isolated farmstead where his mother's original husband died of the fever and she married into the local tribe.

He's spent his whole life divided between the two cultures, and sort of like Worf, he tries to honor his heritage, but it seems that the two halves of his ancestry will never reconcile.

He has to flee home after he warns his father's people of some U.S. soldiers who are intent on attacking them after having been hired by the military officers initially to find the very people he warned.  He becomes a railroad worker, buffalo hunter, porter, guide, scout, stagecoach driver, anything just to put some distance out.

He's actually a hand to hand combat build (despite the lack of arcane background) because he's spent his whole life being tested by his father's people and being persecuted by his mother's people.  Uses a mixture of native and European weaponry.

Despite this, he's actually a very positive guy, he wishes people would stop fighting and start listening to each other, but it seems nobody ever does and it frustrates him sometimes.  He feels like he's spent his whole life watching people hurt each other for no good reason.

Probably a character with the Heroic hindrance.

I've been batting around ideas, and I'm thinking of a Harrowed Pugilist, who uses his new unlife to charge into fights, beating people to death with his hands, and he swears he hits harder now than he used to.

So it would clash with your exile Posse Member 4, though the idea of the skull faced wanderer is different and would be fun to see in action.

Personally - I used to love the idea of if I was going to play one, a Harrowed that's fresh and doesn't realize what they are yet, the journey that takes you on.

A concept I have come up with is a gunslinger. He grew up in the swamps of Louisiana. He was exposed to voodoo and the Catholic faith. While he leaned more towards Catholicism, his family was brutally murdered by something unnatural. He began to wonder if voodoo was real and set out to find answers. While he struggles with his faith and sometimes lack of faith, he knows there are unnatural beings in this world and he must do what he can to protect those he can.

Well currently Blood Drive is in the lead and since we're moving on to discussing characters (and Posse Member 1 said they were good with either) I think we can call this settled.  Speak up if any concerns, otherwise plan on long days in the saddle and nights sleeping under the stars....all with the odor of fresh manure.

I'll unlock the Character Creation thread now so we can see who the posse will really be

In reply to Posse Member 6 (msg # 20):

OK, but actually? A party full or almost full of Harrowed would be pretty fun.

My main concept thus far does have a bit of overlap with Posse Members 1 and 4, but only insofar as hand-to-hand combat (and it looks like the overlap is slightly more with PM1), and I think it could be interesting to have them as counterpoints to each other.

The concept relies on some basic tropes from wuxia fiction, since the character is effectively a wandering martial artist helping people out (a la Caine from Kung Fu, I guess). He studied heterodox techniques under a villainous martial artist, and will have defected from his master's tutelage to travel the Weird West (probably after some disaster caused by his master which he was involved in and feels some guilt for).

I imagine him as someone who wants to stop killing, because it was taught to him as a way of life (monsters are, of course, fair game).

(...if he's Harrowed, though, maybe he also died in that disaster, and maybe the heterodox techniques are useful for preserving his body. :) But this character character doesn't need to be Harrowed.)

And if he's coexisting with either of the other two posse members, I've got some ideas:

PM1: He probably would think the pugilist can be better than he is, and would eventually get around to trying to convince him not to go into fights so much, and not to kill people when he does.

PM2: He probably would see the exile as a model to follow, and might try to offer a persuasive voice in support on occasion.

Harrowed - Decay
quote:
Animals can always tell.  Any Riding or other rolls involving the cooperation of animals suffer a −2 penalty when attempted by Harrowed.

Hehe, I'm just picturing the rancher now:

"What in the wide, wide world of sports is a-goin' on here?  Lard h'mercy, I never seen a more sorry bunch a drovers in my life!  Git'on after them doggies and join'n up with the herd again.  We'll be lucky to make Kansas City by Christmas at this rate!  It's like they're terrified just bein' near ya.  Maybe it's the pallor y'all got, you sure you're not feelin' poorly....cause ya damn sure look like you're ail'n."

I'm not saying don't do it but think about the headaches to deal with too and how to make it fun :)
