Re: ( IC) Nusa Kutam.

quote:
"Thank you, Karash-kun and thank you for the wisdom shown in naming me Just Lady."
"Understood, my Lady," he bows his head. Makes good sense. It might be best not to make her identity known, in certain situations, he thinks admiring her forward-thinking.

He then suggests politely, "Perhaps my Lady would want to lay down some ground rules for us, so we may arrange the best defence and accommodate her wishes?" he glances at the others.

Tan replies,‘I hope we find much booze along the way and forge lasting friendship!”

To Karash’s words, Tan says,” Yes, it will help if we have clear rules of engagement.”

Re: ( IC) Nusa Kutam.

Hanako:
"Thank you, Karash-kun and thank you for the wisdom shown in naming me Just Lady."

Karash:
"Understood, my Lady," he bows his head.

Hanako nods, glad she is understood, even in a language whose seeming simplicity still confounds her tongue at the most awkward moments as she offers an apposite proverb in answer of "Discretion and loyalty are two walls of Trust's house."
Her distracted air suggests Hanako is still considering the task before them and how best to carry it out...

Tan:
"I hope we find much booze along the way and forge lasting friendship!"

...Which fortunately prevents her from noting Tan's order of priorities.

Karash:
"Perhaps my Lady would want to lay down some ground rules for us, so we may arrange the best defence and accommodate her wishes?" he glances at the others.

Nafu:
Nafu waits quietly and calmly...

Tan:
"Yes it will help if we have clear rules of engagement."

Hanako:
"And this is why I need bodyguards."

She looks to the monkey as she murmurs "And a guide wise in forest lore." with a flicker of a smile so swift that it may have been a trick of the light.

She composes herself a moment, seeks the right words in Garudan and simply explains "There is a village to the north, on the ox cart road. I am told the inhabitants make fine silver beads, and likely fine baskets too. They also have some interesting local customs concerning men not of the village that may complicate your duty in guarding me from harm while I am within their walls."

Hanako adds "I am a healer of sorts, as well as a trader in training of House Akari, and a collector of rare plants, among other things, but that scholarly pursuit may not be respected where I am not well-known, so I will seek further knowledge of the place and it's inhabitants before we depart."

She looks sternly to each man as she concludes "I do not wish to give offense to anyone out of ignorance when a little time spent in study may prevent it, nor do I wish harm done to anyone out of ignorance either. That is all I can tell you of the matter at this time. Do you three have any further questions? I will answer them if I can."

Re: ( IC) Nusa Kutam.

"Your words are wise, my Lady. I do not have any questions. We will wait wait for you to be ready, and will use this time for combat training, so each of us may know the strength of their companions to better escort you in your travels."

He bows to Lady Hanako and addresses his companions. "Let's find out if Captain Akari has left word to the House hands about our lodgings, and let us find a quiet spot for our practice."

OOC - Assuming we will be staying in House Akari until departure, near the Lady? And presumably this is a safe house for her, not needing our constant guarding

Re: ( IC) Nusa Kutam.

"I am ready to follow you, Fūrén Hanako!" Tan says. Then turning to Karash, he says," Exactly what I have in mind. I think if Captain Akari agrees, he could perhaps assign some guards or men to spar with us using sticks. This will allow us to train as a fighting group. Of course, if that is not possible, we can train amongst ourselves,"Tan says.

"Sparring partners are a splendid idea, Tan" Karash nods in agreement. Bowing to the Lady again, he walks away and starts looking for the Captain or one of his men in the House courtyard.

Re: ( IC) Nusa Kutam.

Bidding fairwell to her father Hanako led the three men up the winding cart trail to the market square in Ganyar town, the whole place was crowded with people selling food and other items. She looked across at the uniforms worn by the gate guards on the royal road leading north east out of town.

The markets thenselves were surrounded by a maze of small streets and alleys with the compounds of merchants and officials making up much of the western portion.

It is to this area that the three foreigners were led by a fourth.

The Akari compound stood out from the others for one simple reason, the huge bronze Akari Mondokoro affixed to the gates and displayed on banners at each corner of the wall.

The two gate guards snapped to attention as Hanako approached and they opened the gates into the Akari compound.

Like all the other compounds the interior consisted of the home for the family in one area composed of separate small buildings merged with the fence that surrounds them. Separate buildings within each area of the compound consist of servants houses, temples, meeting and feast halls and a number of areas for ablutions.

Hanako indicated one of the empty servants quarters where the men could place their things and the open area in the middle of the copound where they could practice their arts either alone or with the house guards.

Re: ( IC) Nusa Kutam.

As he enters the compound, Tan could not help but think to himself that money is certainly as useful if not more than political patronage as he takes in the opulence of the manor. He thinks that it is almost as grand as the palace of his adopted father in Temasek.

Entering the quarters, he carefully places his belongings before speaking to his newfound frends.

"Shall we do some practice and talk about our styles of fighting? Personally, I like to engage my foes as quickly as I can and overcome them with brute force. Much like a  buffalo charging," he chuckles. "I guess maybe I can charge headon while some of us may try to flank or strike from the rear?" he asks, looking at Nafu.

Karash secures his items in the living quarters too.

"Ha! A buffalo and a trickster, excellent." He nods in response."I like to start on the defensive, and study the enemy's technique while saving strength. If I see a weak point I strike, trying to make each blow count. But often the fog of battle changes the best laid plans. Let us gain the courtyard, friends, practicing among us with the house guards will teach us more than a thousand words..."

Selecting his weapons from his equipment, he beckons the others to the indicated practice grounds. He will try to enlist 3 or more guards to train with them, introducing himself and the others as the hired escort to Lady Hanako.

In reply to Karash (msg # 67):

The next few hours are spent dueling and at practise in the open areas of the compound, Hanako watched a little but spent most of her time reading only setting her books aside as evening approached.

The Captain returned home grinning at the sweating men before calling for the evening meal to be set out once the combatants had washed and dressed.

Ablutions attended to great wooden trays of steamed rice were placed on the low table and along with it a selection of Yamatese dishes with a local bent due to ingredient substitution and additional condiments.

Nafu eats quickly and hungrily only late in the meal remembering to try to show some decorum. He finds it hard to forget that he is no longer a street urchin never sure of where his next meal might come from with the only sure way to avoid having his meal stolen to cram it into his Luther as quickly as possible.

Tan sits at his assigned seat and before the meal starts, he will greet and the thank the host for the excellent fare. Before he digs into his meal, he asks the hosts to eat first, following the tradition of asking the seniors to eat first before starting. If the hosts eat with their fingers following the culture of the region, he will follow suit. If they use traditional cutlery of their homeland, he will also do so, having been trained to do both equally well. He will comment on the dishes taste as he eats and compliment the host.

Captain Akari nods in recognition, he eats with a pair of laquered nuribashi with mother of pearl inlays, Tan finds them rather thin, tapered and shorter than those at use among his birth family.

Captain Akari makes it clear that those unused to their use may use their fingers or the small wooden spoons laid out for them.

" So, Daughter. You will depart tomorrow morning or do you require more time for preparations?"

Datuk Tan sees the exquisite chopsticks and compliments the lord on the quality of the chopsticls. He notes that it is probably a gift from the Khitanese emperor or some powerful lord.

He continues to eat, taking care to toast the lord of the manor when needed.

Captain Akari thanks him and mentions that the utensils are a family heirloom from his estate back in Sagami Province, Yamato.

He invites all present to ask anything they wish in regards to their mission tomorrow.
