It looks like we're 2 ranged 4 melee, and with 2 rogues that means each rogue should get a dance partner for flanking.  Both the rogues and our druid and cleric should feel happy about that, because advantage for ALL the people!

I don't think we can give each other advantage on ranged attacks, Sakr, but I think we'll have fun regardless.

We're just waiting for Goon and Davor to finish up their character sheets and then we should be about ready to begin.

The story will begin with the characters traveling through the countryside toward a larger city. It would be easiest if they are traveling together / have some connection to each other, but it is not absolutely essential. I'll let you work on connections here while we wait to get started. We have a pretty diverse group in terms of backgrounds, though, so we'll see how that goes. If nothing else, they could all be part of a trade caravan or something like that. But you're a creative bunch, so I bet you can come up with something interesting. :)

Lani is likewise a social butterfly (maybe not to Yatari's extent, but she also doesn't rely on business relationships for much!) so she's happy to know almost anybody. Doubly so if they're willing to let her ask some questions about themselves and jot down details while they travel.

She's also a performer of very, very minor renown, but has been in the business since before she had her adult name. Could totally know some people who saw her old troupe when they were younger.

Davor is a relative newcomer to civilized society, but he makes his way as a sort of fortune teller/warrior. It's possible, even likely, that he has spouted off a prophecy about one or more party members and insisted on following them around. Whether that prophecy has any grounding in reality (to the degree that any prophecy does) or is completely made up, who's to say?

Happy to have a background with anyone, or everyone!

Myre is young, naive and new to adventuring. She's pretty socially oblivious and doesn't understand how her fascination with disease and death is considered so taboo. She is a fantastic vegetarian cook (she thinks) so there's one reason to keep her around.

I could see her falling in with Davor (whether he wants it or not) due to the obvious connection. Otherwise, while not far travelled, she may still have interesting stories for Lani.

Yatari is interesting enough that Myre may approach her. Or, as you mentioned, Yatari could have ran into Davor (and a tag along Myre) at some time.

Myre's affinity with the outdoors could have led her to run into Sakr at some stage as well.

If Lani's troupe traveled, then there's a chance Yatari saw them perform and happened upon the Antic after Lani left the act.  Then those two met up with Myre and Davor--a death cleric and a druid fascinated by death seems like a natural pairing there, while the social birds could flock together.  Depending on Sakr's interests, he might be part of the Death Gang, while depending on his interests, Goon might've fallen in with Lani as thieves of a feather flocking together.

And then a prophecy gets told, and suddenly six merry travelers come together!

I think the death connection with Myre makes a lot of sense. Davor is unlikely to be put off by any lack of social graces. If anything, another person who eschews civilized niceties would be very welcome.

Depending on how far abroad Sakr has roamed, it's possible that he and Davor encountered each other quite awhile ago. Davor is at home in the wilds and would have happily traveled with a ranger.

Hah! I like it. We all end up together based on the insane ramblings of a death worshipping cleric.

Davor and Myre travelling together seems to be arranged then. With neither of them having any social skills a couple of pretty faces would be welcome companions so they're not chased out of every town they try to shelter in.

Sorry for being the slow one, folks. Just now sitting at my computer and will wrap up in an hourish or two.

I left Goon's background pretty open. His past reputation is much like his namesake, but though he is somber, he is certainly amicable.

I always enjoy a good collective background. I think it would be interesting for Goon to have seen Lani's troupe in the past, as he served as muscle for nobles, and what noble didn't like their entertainment?

Being that he is also relatively new to adventuring (gets pretty boring standing around and cracking heads all day), he would also be apt to fall into company with others. He's smart enough to not be a lone wolf.

Re: OOC

You know folks, w/o being too meta, there may be room to justify Goon going point, which is something that I as a player rarely do.

He's a beefy dude, unhindered by darkness isn't a complete buffoon on his feet (though not stealthy), and has moonlights at times as a repossessor, granting him some skills with Thieves tools. The characters may have also noticed how easy it was for him to have run off after the horsemen, relatively unrestrained.

It would volunteer Goon for the cause XD

Also, rest of you should know I've been a little slowed up as my lovely one is going through some medical recovery right now :)

Is there any bridge across the river? How far across is the river?

Are the bandits directly across from the party?

Does it seem the other tunnels lead to here?

Is there any cover between the party and the bandits?

So if we go out of the tunnel we were at originally, we might have a chance at surprise--if we use the secret sidepath, we're gonna get introduced to some prickly pals ASAP.  Is that accurate?

(My character once drowned because I assumed I understood what the elven temple's layout was.  Worst part: she drowned in about 4 inches of water, face down, because a bunch of archers rendered her very unconscious with their readied actions.  I am leery both of puddles and archers as a result.)

I think a pincer attack might be good.  Goon can charge forth, and Yatari can swoop to hex+eldritch blast our friends on the other side of the ford.  From there, our intrepid team can follow in Goon's stead while he tanks, and some of them are liable to switch directions to try and shoot at the evil batlass.

Them's my two cents.

I think Davor makes sense to lead the charge and potentially take the brunt of the archer fire. With False Life, I have almost double standard level 1 character hit points. Between that, Relentless Endurance, and potentially saving my last spell slot for Cure Wounds I think I'm the closest thing we have to a tank. My AC is still only 15 though.

Since it sounds like the bigger group might be in and around the secret tunnel when we decide to attack, I could alternatively use my last spell slot on Bless.

I'm also pretty effective at range though because I can target two enemies who are next to each other with a single casting of my Chill Touch cantrip.

My last thing is, if any of our other casters have a way to distract those bandits with an illusion or something, drawing their fire would be awesome.

Sorry for the double post!

Okay, so theater of the mind can be fun, but at times it can be dangerous.  (Looking at you, hidden elves shooting me full of drowning!)

https://imgur.com/ZHwktLI

This is atrocious, but nobody ever said I was an artist.  This is my understanding of the cave network right now.

We start with the entrance with the horses, through bear trap water junction, into the sand palm.  There we have five branching paths, one of which has a secret hidden spicy spot (that's the black dotted line).  This spicy side path leads to the zipline (the brown dotted line) which fords the water that otherwise cuts off the five fingers from reaching across to the frowny face bandits.  The frowny face bandits are also not looking at the ring finger, the fourth tunnel from the sand palm, so Yatari is able to emerge like a bat out of hell and poorly execute an eldritch blast with the element of surprise.

With any luck, that means Davor can then zipline down and hit 'em with a "scythe to meet you!"

And I actually think that Goon will be taking the water way. The less of us that zip down (as fun as it sounds), the faster we'll get over there. It'll also give them someone else to shoot at besides Yatari.

That's a pretty good approximation, Yatari.

Note that all of the tunnels exit the cliff about 50 feet above the river, so, like I mentioned earlier, you'll have to have a way to get down to the ground/water level, and the river is 60 feet across (and you don't know how deep it is).

Re: OOC

Initial post or not, that's still not an effective answer to Lani's question, DM.

If there is a handle every 10 ft or so, and surmised that the cable is 50-60ish ft down, that means there are 5-6 handles.

My assumption is that this pulley system just has the handles rotate; i.e. as a person slides down, the handles that were "ahead" on the cable rotate back to the top. Which would mean that there would be enough handles for everyone, since every 10 ft they could hop on a handle and go. Fortunately, we have a flymaggedon.

Or, it could mean there are 5-6 handles on the cable waiting to be grabbed (5ft above rock ledge, which could suggest they are lined up 50-60feet back inside our rocky outcropping) but because of the sloping angle, they would be increasingly harder to reach overhead at once anyway due to the 25 degree slope.

But due to a lack of description, this is all anyone can surmise.

What am I missing from this understanding? Should our characters make some sort of roll to ascertain how this would work? A more thorough description would be helpful.

Your initial assumption is correct, Goon. It is a pulley system that rotates the cable and handles. As long as the cable is moving, a new handle will be available after every 10 feet.

Just a question; Are we generally posting in present tense, past, or does it matter?

I read back a few posts before my last one and saw mostly present tense, but I've dug in a bit more and seen some past tense as well. I'm generally more comfortable writing in past tense, so if that's okay, I'll probably stick to that. If not, I can happily adapt.

I post in the present tense, but it doesn't really matter to me which you choose, as long as it's third-person.

If I have an issue with a post, I'll let you know. So far, everyone's posts look great, though.

Also, that reward should be divided six ways, not five.

Also, I've become fairly good friends with some of the people from the other games from the chats on Discord more so than the OOC threads. We tend to stick primarily to game-related topics on rpol, but then we're freer to just chat and be friendly on Discord.

Re: OOC

Question.

This won't come up until level 2 but I was wondering if taking the Whip as my Bladesinger melee weapon might be an interesting idea. Rapier is the more obvious choice at first glance because of damage. I would consider taking the Poisoner feat for some added damage but not sure about that yet.

But the whip adds 5 feet reach.
If I then take the Sentinel feat at level 4 does that increase the reach that feat mentions for the reaction and opportunity provocation?

Do I need to read this sentence from Sentinel as: Creatures within 5 feet (10 with whip reach) of you provoke opportunity attacks from you. Even if they take the Disengage action before leaving your reach. OR Creatures within 5 feet (10 with whip reach) of you provoke opportunity attacks from you before leaving your reach. Even if they take the Disengage action. Notice the difference?

Does it also add that reach to a spell like Green Flame Blade?
That would make the lower damage for a whip worth considering.

I could use Green Flame Blade to offset the lower damage, stop attackers in their tracks and use my increased movement from Bladesinger to stay out of their reach, while also helping out anyone within my 10 feet reach by making the reaction attack.

Just wondering. The idea of a green flame whipping wizard sounds kind of fun.

Re: OOC

Nothing in the feat or spell descriptions says that reach weapons extend the reach of the feat or spell.

Yes, the weapon (Whip, Pike, Lance, etc) lets you attack farther away than normal, even for an AoO, but that doesn't mean it extends specials, such as the 2nd and 3rd features of Sentinel, nor spell effects of any spell.

However, the DM may disagree with me.

Re: OOC

Sure but the special weapon trait Reach does specifically extend the reach of a weapon by 5 feet, and if a weapon is what delivers the special circumstance it makes sense to me a weapon with Reach has a longer reach than say a dagger for delivering a special circumstance as well.
An opportunity attack is an attack and Reach says: This weapon adds 5 feet to your reach when you attack with it. Likewise a reaction attack is still an attack so reach should add 5 feet.

Green Flame Blade is a little different as it is the flame that leaps 5 feet rather than it being an additional attack (which would have reach). But then since the whip has an additional reach of 5 feet what is the source from which the Green Flame leaps an additional 5 feet? If I hit a target 5 feet from me the spell then says it causes green fire to leap from the target to a different creature of your choice that you can see within 5 feet of it. So technically up to 10 feet away from me provided the original target is within 5 feet from the second target.

In reply to Aeowin (msg # 273):

Yes, it extends the reach of the WEAPON. Not the spell, not the special ability of the feat. The spell is leaping 5' from the caster. The special abilities of the feat have to do with the user's ability to react to things that are close to him. More than weapon reach is involved in each presumably. Especially the spell.

Re: OOC

They clarified this and Jeremy Crawford has explicitly stated: the first and second abilities of the Sentinel feat are affected by the reach of the weapon, but the third ability is not.

This is the corrected and deliberate wording of the feat on D&D Beyond:
  • When you hit a creature with an opportunity attack, the creature's speed becomes 0 for the rest of the turn.
  • Creatures provoke opportunity attacks from you even if they take the Disengage action before leaving your reach.
  • When a creature within 5 feet of you makes an attack against a target other than you (and that target doesn't have this feat), you can use your reaction to make a melee weapon attack against the attacking creature.

Green Flame Blade only works within 5ft unless you also have the Spell Sniper feat.

Thanks for the input.

I'm probably better off taking Mobile for what I want to use it for: stay out of the way after attacking. No opportunity attack on me + 20ft extra movement (mobile + bladesinging) would do a good job staying out of an attacker's way. Also fits better with the Bladesinger concept.

Still somewhat getting used to some of the 5e mechanics.

Re: OOC

Hrm .. so Booming Blade says "if a target willfully moves", what if a creature is in a carriage moving away from a crime scene after I Booming Blade him through the window? Obviously he -wants- to get away and he uses the carriage, he is a willing participant in the moving away by carriage. Right? Or is he an unwilling moving target because the horses, or the driver, determines the moving and therefore the spell doesn't work? But if that is so, then anyone mounting an animal or carried otherwise could not be affected by Booming Blade either.

Also I guess it cannot affect non-living targets because they lack a will to move ..

Also Green Flame Blade says: "against one creature within 5 feet of you. On a hit, the target suffers the weapon attack's normal effects, and you can cause green fire to leap from the target to a different creature of your choice". Again what if the target is not a creature? Is the Green Fire making a distinction between living and non-living targets? "Oh no honey, I don't burn non-living targets".

In reply to Aeowin (msg # 347):

Re: Green fire. Your answer your own question:
If the target isn't a creature, then it isn't a target. The definition of a target IS a creature, after all.

Nor are all creatures living. which implies a different criteria for how the spell works.

As to who is willing the movement in the case of the Booming Blade, it's whoever is directly the horse/mount. A rider in control is willfully moving. a passenger is moving at the whims of the driver, and a rider on an uncontrolled mount is moving at the whims of the mount.

None of these are existenial questions. The answers seem quite clear cut.

Re: OOC

Booming Blade says nothing about needing to do the moving oneself. Just willful and moving.
Technically it doesn't even have direction as a criteria. One could argue as long as someone wants to move it doesn't matter whereto or by whom they are moved: Desiring to move and moving.
Passengers move willfully, not on their own, but there can be no denying they are willfully moving in a direction they chose when complying with the direction the carriage travels.
I could say everyone using the carriage is willfully moving.
You could argue the horses are not willfully moving since they are directed but then they aren't forced, they comply with the driver. I agree with the rider on an uncontrolled horse but then that would also apply to a carriage, as long as the horses are controlled everyone is willfully moving in the direction they chose, including the horses.
If the driver of a carriage is not moving in the direction the passenger wants then I guess the willful part is in question. The question doesn't seem quite as clear cut to me, hence me asking the DM.

The party is fighting the Vipers at the third door (of four) on the right. Aeowin opened the door to the latrine, which is the first door on the left. There is a door at the far end of the hallway, across from the one through which you entered. Doors #2 and #4 on the right are equidistant from the door where the party and the Vipers are.

This is the main reason not to do it though :).

I was waiting to see if Aeowin's idea was viable. Since it's not, let's head back. We should have enough magic to look after ourselves.

Only other idea I have is to set up an ambush when the winners come looking for us.

Yep. Mostly because we tend to talk things to death. But Alfie can do anything without his gear.

And I must have missed something, but I thought the consensus yesterday was to follow, or, at worst, head to cut them off, and now, suddenly, it isn't (from one post0), so...Yes, Alfie is getting a bit frustrated.

Possibly I missed something, as I've been busy for the last couple weeks, but I thought I was following along.

No he means that when we got jumped, they took all our stuff and that the goblins that took our stuff separated from the goblins escorting us.

So going back to the battle won't help us find our stuff because it isn't there.

My understanding of the consensus is that we're going to try to get away from the battle, backtrack to where we were jumped, and then follow the trail of the group with our stuff.

Both locations are in the same relative direction, which is opposite to retreating, yes?  So we can go around the battle, as has been mentioned m (more or less) a few times, or we can go farther away from everything.

I'm for going around, and have been. I see no reason to change that simply because someone declared we're going the other way. Nor do I seem to be alone in that opinion.

I agree. And it didn't make sense to have abilities he couldn't use, either.

We'll get where we're going eventually with or without horses. Not so much with Artificer's abilities and a lack of tools.

Horses are a luxury. I got necessities. Now I can actually use all my class abilities, and I'm ready to use my next level abilities also. This includes Identifying Magic Items.

The downside of an Artificer: the need to have the right tools for all you might need to do. Right Tool For The Job is surprisingly limited in that regard.

Arra can easily sell her two sets of leather armor and purchase a set of studded leather armor. It will cost her 40 gold pieces (net).

And Davor can purchase a vendor tent for 5 gold pieces or rent one for the entirety of the festival for 1 gold piece.

Let me know if anyone wants to take part in any of the contests, as well as anything else you want to do at the festival. I do have things planned for later, but I want to give you all a chance to explore.

Re: OOC

well, in the post Mayflower days of the colonization of America, everything manufactured had to be imported. While Europe had forks, forks and spoons were just too expensive to import. Luxury items. Knives, however, were essential universal tools. They could be used for much more than just eating...like carving wooden spoons.

So to keep your hands clean at meals, you used your knife and spoon to eat. Knives were referred to as Spikes. "Spic and Span" is just linguistic evolution for Spike and Spoon. Presumably this would be before the Earl of Sandwich.

Arra, fair tokens are handed out by the judges at the various contests taking place at the fair: dancing, drinking, dueling, epic poetry, kite-fighting, storytelling, and wrestling.

Just a silly idiosyncrasy, I like space round my text and can leave a blank line at the top but RPoL won’t let me leave one at the bottom, in the first game I run I started forcing the space with the full stop and chose blue just because I like blue.

I’ll stop doing it if asked but it’s become a bit like a signature for me. Mostly though it’s just to force a space at the bottom of the post.

It can let you become very thin (presumably minimum weight and height for the species you select) but you're still Medium.

Just a note for the DM to help him answer the question.

There is room for one additional character to enter with Davor right now.

Ren is the first to act in the round. She will need to make a Dexterity check to enter.

One per round. Each heals 1 point. Each also provides a full day's food and water.  Per the PHB.

So you can eat all 10, although you may not need them. It will just take awhile (well, it's a while in combat, it's only a minute otherwise).

One of my favorite in person exchanges, and I know I'm not the only person to have this (or something similar to this) happen to them was:

Player 1:  "Hey, how many hit points are you down?"

DM: "Hey, no metagaming."

Player 1: "On a scale of say...... 1 to 34, how beat up do you look?"
