Caves of Chaos - Part 1

The party moves among the clumps of trees with the menacing birds towards the lowest cave that is close to the entrance.  The cave mouth is small, about five and half feet high and only three feet wide.  Inside is darkness.  However, the passage beyond quickly doubles in height and breadth allowing everyone to stand up and move two abreast if desired.  In the flickering light of the torch it is clear the walls and ceiling are natural or cut from the rock, the surfaces are rough.

With his lit torch in hand Gyp took a position in the middle of the band of adventurers. There was something fearful about entering the caves of chaos which made the fool go silent and walk with a careful stillness. His face was serious and all his earlier cheeriness was gone.

Falco slowly and cautiously moves into the cave entrance, taking a moment to look above and around before passing though the threshold just in case there is something lurking there by chance, or a trap, alarm, or natural danger present. He looks for the glint of trip wires, the seams of concealed pits, or anything suggesting a possible concealed passageway. He keeps quite and alert, listening to his surroundings for any sounds that might suggest nearby creatures or natural dangers.

The group moves into the gloom of the cave system cautiously, Falco and Reea in lead.  Falco carefully searches for any danger or concealed traps as Reea covers him, and it is a good thing he is careful, stopping her before she steps on a suspicious-looking patch of ground.  The area in question is almost the width of the passage and nearly 10 feet across, and begins roughly 10 feet into the tunnel.  It covers the intersection area where another passage crosses the end of the entrance passage, forming a T.

From the edge of the (still covered) pit to the right there is a nook of sorts where six humanoid creatures are lounging about.  They are small, dog-like men with scaly rust-brown skin and no hair.  They are wearing rude clothing and have spears.  They look disturbed by the light of the torch and seem unprepared.

They rolled a 1 for initiative.  Unless you guys also roll a 1 you have the initiative.  They are not surprised, largely because of the torch light.

He waved his hands and gave a courteous bow "greetings and salutations may the fortunes bless our meeting" he introduced himself as he straightened his back and spread his empty hands wide "myself and my companions come in peace. May we parlay?" he asked.

As Gyp starts his speech Leozaren casts the spell and the six creatures lay themselves down to sleep.  With the immediate threat subdued, the party has time to step around the pit trap either to the right (towards the creatures) or to the left.  The left has a strong, foul odor, by the light of the torch the passage opens into a chamber of some kind and there is refuse visible.  To the right the passage banks to the right and continues out of sight.  The creatures are in an alcove about 10 feet square to the right.

The sleeping creatures are at 1 on Game map 2.

With the sleeping kobolds dispatched, the party moves to the left, walking carefully lest any more traps or pits present themselves.  The corridors have remarkably high-ceilings considering how short the kobolds are, but the work generally is low quality.  Clearly these caves were enlarged by the inhabitants.

After a turn of careful walk they come to an intersection.  One way turn left (north) and the other goes on straight east.  To the east the light of the torch does not reach any chamber, but the sounds of chatter carries down the stone corridors from that direction.  To the left is all quiet.

The party moves cautiously north from the intersection to the next intersection they could see, another "T."  To the left (west) as far as the torchlight can see there looks to be a messy storage area.  In the dim light you can see boxes, barrels, sacks and other things lying about.  To the right (east) you don't see anything beyond the torchlight, but arrows come flying from that direction!

Three arrows come flying at the first two rows of the parry (Falco, Reea and Leozaren), but fortunately all three of you are well-armored and the arrows miss or glance off armor.

The range of the light is 30 feet, the arrows came from the darkness beyond.  Leozaren, the torchlight messes up your infravision.

Unencubmered move is 40 feet/round
Leather armor is 30 feet/round
Metal armor is 20 feet/round

Running is 3x normal movement.  Map 2 updated.  Actions?

Perhaps we could get a healer to patch up our Elf too. Then we could make another trip tomorrow or the day after when we are all good and rested," Falco replies to Faldal.

"Or we could leave the caves, retreat back into the woods a good distance away and make camp. Of course, a creature could wander into our camp...dealing more harm than we recover. And we will not have a healer to patch anyone up."

"Riskier would be to try to clear this cave and shelter here...but we don't know much more there is to go...is the problem. With some luck, there might not be much more to go...but if we run into trouble, it could mean someone's life and we will not have a healer to patch anyone up that gets wounded."

Caves of Chaos - Part 1

Falco puts all his strength into a swift kick at the door and shatters the locking mechanism, sending the door swinging inward.  The room beyond is littered with heaps of cloth, old and battered furniture, and there is an old blanket hanging on the wall in the form of a tapestry.  When the door flies open a rather large specimen of the same creature jumps up from a three-legged divan where he was lounging, surrounded by five females.  He picks up a battle-axe that was leaning by his side, and though they are momentarily surprised, the six seem ready, though not necessarily willing, for battle.

The battle-axe wielding one also wears a gold necklace with a rather large red gem on it.

You guys have initiative, map 2 is updated, only two of you can get through the door in one round, and only two creatures can fit in any one 10-foot square.  They are in the bottom-right three squares.

The assault begins rapidly and the creatures lose their greatest advantage almost immediately.  Gyp puts an arrow into the abdomen of the obvious leader and as he raises his battle axe to respond Falco rushes in and thrusts his spear into his chest.  With stomach and heart pierced he drops the axe weakly and falls onto his knees, releasing one dying breath before falling over.

Leozaren meanwhile slashes at one of the females and gashes her on the arm.  The five of them screech and wail with emotion as they fling themselves onto the party members.  Despite sufficient sophistication to wear armor (the lot of them are in chainmail) they go at the party with tooth and claw.  The uncoordinated and unskilled attacks are not very effective, but the scratches and bites add up...

The large male with the battle axe has a large gem on a great golden chain about his neck.  Hidden in an old blanket hanging on the wall are 50 gold pieces (sewn into the hem).  Between them the five females (including the one still alive) had 17 gold pieces.  There is also a locked chest among the battered furniture.

The party leaves the cave of the kobold chief with the treasure piled into the chest  Kyr seems eager to lead the way, but stays where directed by Simon.  After a turn of careful movement you reach the intersection where the guards first fired arrows at you.  Jori and Reea seem to have departed, there is no sign of them or of any struggle.  Ahead is a chamber Kyr refers to as "refuse."

Turning right you reach another intersection.  To you left (West) is the direction you came and the cave entrance.  To the East Kyr turns to go, hesitating before rushing off into the darkness.  From that point to the pit trap and cave entrance there is no further obstacle.

You exit the cave in the late afternoon.  If you take the road you can be half way to the keep by nightfall.
