Caves of Chaos Part 2

Following the Fool's advice, the party follows the road to the former spider nest where the forest, road and river meet, a journey of one hour. There they rest a few minutes before striking out North into the forest.  From there it's another three hours to the clearing, arriving some 300 yards SSW of the small cave in the hill.

Pause here if anyone wants to do or say anything.

Their journey was undisturbed by giant spiders or any other threat which Gyp took as a good omen. When they reached the small cave Gyp was keen to carry on “there was much more to the kobold caves that we did not see. I say we continue there rather than upset the goblins” he reasoned with Falco.

The fool pointed to the small cave “we can rest here a moment before we continued to the caves of chaos” he suggested.

”If we do plan to go to the goblin cave let us parlay with them to join forces, us and goblins to go kill the kobold’s dragon” he suggested in an accord with part of Falco’s plan.

After a brief rest at the edge of the clearing, using the forest for cover, the party moves on through it, past the small cave (empty as they pass) and into the rougher woods beyond that lead to the Caves of Chaos.  It is another hour to move through the thicker woods and underbrush, the ground rising steeply on the left (North) as they move, until finally rounding a bend and coming into the entrance of the defile or bowl that is largely barren of trees and has the cave mouths.

On the lowest level to the right is the kobold cave.  On the left there are two other cave entrances, one directly across from the kobold cave partially concealed under the eaves of a gnarled tree, the other much closer to where you are standing.

The party cautiously approaches the first cave on the left as you enter the ravine, the closest cave entrance to where you were, and within ten feet of entering the tunnel becomes more regular, clearly worked and shaped.  At the 20 foot mark it divides into three tunnels, West, South and East.  There are no torches or other light, though for the moment the light entering the cave entrance illuminates the tunnel.  Joop and Wort have their weapons ready, for the moment bringing up the rear.

If they want battle I will flee to you, set an ambush” he urged. Gyp took a leaning position at the mouth of the dead end tunnel. Torch in hand and dressed in his motley Gyp hoped to convey a peaceful posture and waited to see what emerged from the darkness. He would try parleying and if that failed he would flee, hopefully leading any enemies into a well laid trap!

The party is admitted into the Keep without delay and heads directly to the Chapel.  Thei former companion, Thorona opens the door when they knock and looks at Gyp gravely.  "Well, bring him through and to the back, we'll see what we can do," she says and leads the way into the back rooms.  The other acolytes clear a small cot for Gyp and retrieve some water in a basin and bandages.  "Best leave him with us tonight," Thorona says.  "I will speak with Abercrombie."

It takes most of the day to travel back to the ravine of the Caves of Chaos; the party arrives in the late afternoon.  The place is just as dismal and foreboding as it was a few days earlier, but the party reinforced and twice as large, prepares to enter the goblin cave again.

We can pick up again here.

Map 1 shows the progress mapped before, the short dead-end on the right side is where you battled the goblins before.

The party enters the cave with Dorn in the lead and Wort and Joop close behind.  The natural cave quickly turns into worked stone.  Within 20 feet of entering the party reaches the intersection they saw previously.  Looking to his right Dorn can see that the passage turns left and right in a T-intersection.  Looking to his left the passage proceeds at an angle to the right-hand passage and shortly splits.  At the split, the right hand passage is the dead end where the party fought the goblins a few days ago; left at that split it opens into a chamber just at the edge of his darkvision.

Going left or right?  From your perspective coming down into the caves on the map, you previously went right on the map (the characters turned left).

The goblins' curses take a turn from derision to alarm as the oil hits the barricade and takes, with a small fire starting there.  There is also a fair amount of smoke in the passage as the first two flasks are burning on the ground and on the wall where Dorn landed them before.

The fires from the first two flasks will burn for three rounds each.  The first one has already burned for two rounds, the second one for one round.  The first one goes out in the next round.  Dorn, roll damage for the splash as the goblins manning the barricade were in the area of effect.

To manage the oil I will say Round 1 was when the first was thrown.  Then another on Round 2 and the last on Round 3.  We are now moving to Round 4, roll initiative.

Using the smoke for cover, the party retreats out of the goblin cave and move East along the ravine to the next cave entrance.  Immediately upon entering they notice a strong, sour odor and then notice what appears to be a huge bear sprawled asleep in the southwestern part of the cave.  On the eastern side of the cave sits the likely source of the foul odor, an ogre; he is sitting on a collection of sacks and there is a heap of old bones in the southern end of the cave.

Round 2

The ogre roars in rage as both Dorn and Gyp inflict wounds on him despite his tough hide.  He forms his meaty hand into another fist and swings again trying to smash the dwarf, but his arm passes over Dorn's head with an alarming gust of wind, missing him.

Joop, knees shaking at the ferocity of the beast, haphazardly stabs with his spear but is way off, and in any case his 'fighting withdrawal' puts him out of reach.  Wort meanwhile recovers some of his senses, and though badly wounded, valiantly tries to stab from where he lies on the round.  Unfortunately, he also missed with his spear.

The ogre was sitting when you entered the cave on a giant-sized leather bag.  Inside the leather bag, Gyp finds:  287 silver pieces; a hard cheese; 485 copper pieces; 91 electrum pieces; 503 gold pieces; and a keg of brandy (value 80 gold pieces).

As he is doing that Wort pokes the bear with his spear only to discover it is a bear skin, already dead.  Lifting it to scare Joop he finds hidden under it six pristine arrows with peacock feathers, a small vial with a white, misty liquid and a a scroll case.

495 xp + 80 for the Brandy if you don't keep it.  XP shares:  Joop and Wort get 1/4 each.  Gyp, Dorn, Faldal, and Leozaren 1 full share each.  That is 110 without the brandy, or 128 if you sell the brandy.

Father Abercrombie welcomes Faldal to the chapel and invites him to sit for some tea.  He examines the potion with some skepticism, and with permission, opens it up and smells, feels it on his fingers, but doesn't taste it.  "I will hazard an educated guess that this is a potion of invisibility; see how light the color is and the consistency," he says.

In five days Dorn is fully healed and healthy again (likely sooner).  Any other plans for those five days for everyone else?  Remember to tally the living expenses.

Whilst the others rested Gyp offered entertainment and the telling of tales for all in the common room of the Green Man Inn.

When he saw Dorn looking fit and healthy he bowed to his audience, where they be real or in his imagination, then danced a jog around the dwarf “let us go once more to the caves of chaos” he clapped his hands “have we got enough oil?” he japed.

OOC 18sp deducted for common room, food and drink for the 6 days.

Given his recent experiences, he decides to stay in chapel at night, praying for the soul of Dynlor when appropriate and eating with the other clerics.

As the party moves down the chosen passage the walls become damp the farther they go; clearly this part of the cave is very wet.  Rounding a bend towards the North they come upon what looks like a large pool of shallow water with a few white fish swimming there.  The only light, of course is the torches you are carrying.

Round 1

The ooze was moving slowly, almost like water lapping up on the edge of the pool, but pseudopod moves surprisingly fast and latches onto Joop as he moved forward with his spear.  He screams in agony as the ooze melts through his boots and then into his legs.  Wort threw his javelin, but is clearly shaken by his comrade's demise and missed.

Dorn then throw the oil onto the creature, the oil splashing on top of it and lighting up, incidentally illuminating the room.  The group now sees a second ooze coming from across the pool, though it is moving quite slow.  In the light of the burning oil a jewel-encrusted goblet of gold can be seen at the bottom of the pool.  Dorn begins his retreat after throwing the oil.

Faldal and Leozaren begin a retreat back the way they came.

Joop is in negative HP.  The oozes have AC 8, relatively easy to hit.  From the book: "Gray ooze cannot be harmed by cold or fire, but can be harmed by weapons and lightning."

End of Round 1

Hjild catches Joop before he hits the ground and pulls him back a few feet to where Faldal can cast the healing scroll.  Meanwhile, Dorn slams the ooze with his battle axe while Leozaren slashes with his sword.  Gyp's arrow finishes the loathsome creature and it begins to dissolve on the ground.  The second one is approaching, moving its way along the bottom of the water to come up on the shore.

Round 2
Seeing the second one moving in Wort throws his javelin at it, but it misses and spalshes into the pool of water.

The second ooze will arrive on round 3.  Reach or ranged weapons can attack it.  Faldal, you may roll 1d6+1 to heal Joop.  Hjild, you declared going to help Joop as your round 1 action, you cannot also attack.  But you may save the 20 attack roll until round 3 when the second one approaches.  Also roll damage for that.  In round two narrating putting Joop down and drawing a weapon for the attack is a good idea.  For everyone, please remember details: what weapon, what sort of attack (slash, bash, etc.) when is it drawn, and some other flourishes.  Thank you.

Caves of Chaos Part 2

The look of the jewels sparkled in Gyp's eyes then a look of fear overcame him. The fool's hands shook and his words were shaky as he warned the others "it's awake!" he then rushed to exit the cave.

Caves of Chaos Part 2

The party stows the goblet away, gathers themselves and turns to head out of the cave system.  As they reach the cave entrance, only 10 feet away from it, there is a large looming shape across the way, about 20 feet away.  It growls in a strange, unnatural way.  Wort holds up the torch to reveal a large creature, mostly bear, but with an owl's face.  The creature opens its beak and shrieks at you.

Wort immediately throws a javelin in its direction, though it misses and Joop advances and jabs at it with his spear, ineffectually as the beast bats his spear aside.

You guys will have initiative since it rolled a 1.  Joop and Wort attacked and missed, your turn.  It starts 20 feet away, 10 feet from the cave mouth.  You are also 10 feet from the cave mouth.  Joop advanced to the cave mouth and thrust with his spear, a reach weapon.

Hjild's heart sinks into his stomach as he approaches the scene. "Bigger n'meaner than an ox, this thing looks! Don't provoke'r!"

Hjild halts his retreat as his path reaches those who are in combat with the beast. "Hya! Hya! Git!" Hjild shouts, holding up his shield and clanging his hammer against it while trying to shift the weight of his backpack back onto his shoulder. Positioning himself so as to secure the escape route for the party if possible.

"We should follow your friends out!" he warns his peers.

The sight of the owlbear had Gyp running for the exit. He was not so churlish to abandon his companions including Joop and Wort. The fool ran out of the cave but spun around to loose an arrow at the giant beast. Perhaps it would be enough to deter the creature from following them.

OOC Moving 30’, so Gyp should end his round 20’ outside of the cave. Then fire an arrow back into the cave if the owlbear is near the entrance. Hit AC 0 for 6 damage!

15:36, Today: Gyp Toogood rolled 19,6 using d20,d6 ((19,6)).

Caves of Chaos Part 2

Round 2 Summary

Correctly fearing the beast's wrath, the group moves to escape the cave.  Gyp's arrow hits the beast, causing it to roar//shriek in rage.  With one claw strike it knocks Leozaren out of the cave; the second misses the lucky Joop; unfortunately, it bites down with its beak on Wort, dealing a fatal blow to the stout man-at-arms.

After swinging at it, Faldal, Dorn and Joop retreat outside as Hjild covers from the cave entrance.

Leozaren is outside at 0 HP.  Wort took 8 points of damage.

The loss of Wort had a morose Gyp running for his life. When the owlbear did not give chase the fool slowed down and dropped to his knees, his head in his hands “woe” he called out “alas poor Wort” he looked to his companions and saw too that they had lost heart with such adventures, at least for this day “aye I need a drink” he agreed when Dorn called for them all to return to town.

When they finally reach town, Dorn ensures that Leozaren has room and board long enough to heal. Once that's arranged, he settles in at the tavern to drink while he plots revenge against the owlbear.

He barely swallows his first mouthful when in rushes a dwarf, a young one, judging from his barely grown-in beard.

"Dorn! Dorn! I found you at last! A message from your father!"

Dorn looks up first in alarm, then in trepidation as he takes the scrollcase from the young dwarf. He gestures at the pitcher of ale for the dwarf to drink while he opens the scrollcase to read its contents. In a heartbeat, the colour drains from his face and his hands tremble.

"I must go home! My poor brother's dead and the goblin hoards threaten to overrun our home. Here, Hjild, take the cup we got from the lake, and get whatever you can for it. I must leave at once!"

Dorn rushes to gather his belongings and heads out with the dwarf pausing just long enough to bade farewell to his compatriots and bid them good luck.

And then he is gone.
